Do you have /emul/ia32-linux/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale directory in your
Linux system as suggested in The Debian GNU/Linux AMD64 HOW-TO:

Similar to bug#4297.
I see the same problem on x86_64 and en_US.UTF-8 locale: when running
notepad.exe and typing one of the German non-ASCII characters (ä, the a-umlaut),
I get
$ LANG=en_US.UTF-8 wine notepad
err:keyboard:X11DRV_ToUnicodeEx Please report: no char for keysym 00E4
(adiaeresis) :
err:keyboard:X11DRV_ToUnicodeEx (virtKey=E9,scanCode=64,keycode=30,state=10)
Same with LANG=C. This is wine-0.9.31 on Kubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft AMD64 (!).
According to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WineForAMD64 I've installed the
32bit version of wine on the amd64 system - which might be a hint as to why this
error occurs.
@Roman: Do you have an AMD64 architecture as well? Or a normal 32bit system?

I noticed a chars.dat file in my home folder. I cat'ed it, and found that it was
a character file saved by Runeword Wizard. At the first startup, it asks for a
character name and level. Since it was saved there, I tested putting the data
files (runes.dat, items.dat and runewords.dat) in my home folder (that is,
/home/snild). It works.
So, for some reason Wine is trying to find these files in my home folder instead
of the directory of the running application. It probably has something to do
with how the app tries to access the files. I've sent a mail to the author of
Runeword Wizard asking for the source code, or at least the snippets concerning
the .dat files.

Finally dug out the disc again and tried it with current git.
It gets further now, but the install still fails
in that it repeatedly puts up a dialog box saying
Run-time error '430':
Class does not support Automation or does not support expected interface
So I'm changing the component to OLE.
You have to fake IE's registry key still,
and you have to install mfc42u.dll.
I'll attach a script that makes that easy,
along with a +msi,+ole,+text log.
I guess the next step is to try this with native DCOM.

Comparing the text output between Windows and Wine shows that wine doesn't send
a WM_ERASEBKGND message which leads to the button not going away when made

Lei's using it to organize his work. He has voluntarily
taken on the job of fixing regedit. Let's let him
go about it however he likes.
Another way to organize it might have been for Lei to assign
all those bugs to himself, but then Lei wouldn't have had
quite such a nice place to upload his regression test.

I seem to recall Alexandre explained this... DISPLAY is
sensed when the first Wine process is started, and
ignored after that. I can demonstrate this easily.
Start a 2nd X server using Xnest:
$ sudo apt-get install xnest
$ Xnest -ac :1
Then start off the first wine process:
$ wineserver -k
$ DISPLAY=:1 notepad
And in another window, try to start a new wine app:
$ winecfg
When I do that, the 2nd app crashes with
X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 1 (X_CreateWindow)
I'd say this bug is still present. We should at least
print out a nice error that explains what's going on.
