Anastasius, have I told you lately how much you rock? :-)
The patch works for me. (I see
fixme:module:LdrGetDllHandle Unknown behavior, please report
in the log, guess I'll file another bug...)
And ps7 tryout text tool can't find a default system font,
I'll file that one, too. But it runs!

I can confirm this.
There's a workaround though: enabling the "Allow pixel shader" option under
Direct3d configuration (in winecfg) solves it, but the game becomes a lot slower..

I'll just have to come back to this app after
safedisc support is merged in Wine, then.

Summary: Msi error during Call of Duty 2 Install
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.35.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: stfan4cjk(a)gmail.com
About 2 percent through the Call of Duty 2 install with the 6 cd set, a "Feature
Transfer Error" pops up saying
Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation
Consult Windows installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information.
I am not able to install Call of Duty 2 because of this error. The installer
just hangs there after I exit the error and I have to restart the X server to
get rid of it. I have attached a msi.log so that someone can try to fix this error.
The log was zipped with rzip to make it smaller in case anyone is wondering how
to unzip it.

Yeah, that should be ok. I wonder why I got more play out of it than you did?
Some time tonight I'll try again to confirm my results and come up with a +font
trace. I'm starting to think that this might be some kind of stack/memory
corruption problem. But that's just a preliminary guess. Just an off thing: how
much RAM do you have?

Hello,
--- quote ---
I reproduced this today with the Photoshop 7 trial downloaded from
fileplanet (name adobeps7tryout.exe, size 170250439, md5sum
cb61d85fceb56e212b89db4502c34ce8).
--- quote ---
I downloaded and verified this too for sake of completeness.
With my proposed fix for advapi32.SetEntriesInAclA() (comment #10) the trial
version installs and runs cleanly.

FWIW, Wine version 0.9.36 out-of-the-box shows this problem the same as 0.9.35,
and the patch in attachment id 5954 from comment #17 solves it in 0.9.36, at
least from what I could see with PAF 5. Thanks.

Hello,
i might shed some light on this issue :)
While hunting down another bug, i downloaded Framemaker 7.1 from Adobe.
This application is protected by vbox 2.4.x so probably same issue as here.
Well, the error messages popping up at startup of adobe applications result from
an incomplete/corrupted vbox installation.
The vbox installer is called "VSetupT.exe" and contained within main app setup.
It gets executed as post install step.
Due to a failure, only license files get generated and copied (usually into
"c:\program files\common files\vbox\Licenses").
Most of vbox supplementary directories there are empty, vbox client/agent dlls
missing.
The following trace extract nails the problem down:
--- snip post-setup installation step ---

...
--- snip post-setup installation step ---
Due to advapi32.SetEntriesInAclA() returning ERROR_CALL_NOT_IMPLEMENTED the
installer silently fails install and exits without error.
I tested this on the fly in while running the installer in debugger by patching
SetEntriesInAclA() returning ERROR_SUCCESS in every case.
All following setup steps were executed successfully and the vbox client/agent
dlls get copied too.
These files are necessary for vbox to work (in c:\Program Files\Common
Files\Vbox\Common\):
vboxat.dll vboxm.dll vboxr.dll vboxtb.dll vboxten-us.vboxlm
The application successfully starts up and displays 30-day trial dialog.
Looking at advapi32.SetEntriesInAclW() I see someone already "fixed" it to
return "OK" in all cases - but missed the ANSI version.
To get adobe vbox installations right, apply the following patch:
--- snip dlls/advapi32/security.c ---
DWORD WINAPI SetEntriesInAclA( ULONG count, PEXPLICIT_ACCESSA pEntries,
PACL OldAcl, PACL* NewAcl )
{
FIXME("%d %p %p %p\n",count,pEntries,OldAcl,NewAcl);
*NewAcl = NULL;
return ERROR_SUCCESS;
}
--- snip dlls/advapi32/security.c ---
This recipe applies to all adobe vbox protected installations.
Be aware that newer installation/demos from adobe DO NOT use vbox software
protection anymore (SafeCast 3.x now)
Regards

That's not a bug in Wine, because as the console says, ICMP requires root in
Linux. We can't fix that ourselves. We don't recommend you run as root, however!

I've turned on +msg, and captured log output at the moment I mouse-left-click

Here is a fragment from 'good behaviour' just before the offending patch is applied:

and here is output just after the patch is applied:

Not really any different, except the lp value in the WM_PARENTNOTIFY msg
is different. I'm not clear on what the lp value is, so I can't comment.
Looking at the offending patch, I can't see anything jumping out - we seem to
get the same basic messages before and after.
Any experiments you would like me to try and I'll happily give them a go.

Thanks for the tips.
I tried again, this time replacing HL2DM with CSD, CS, CSTRIKE and CSLOGO (the
names of all the .ttf files in the counter-strike source resource folder).
Sadly this didn't make any difference (a crash in the second round twice), so I
didn't seem to get the extended play that you did.
By the way - I added those four by just repeating the entire bit of code that
Phil posted four times - is this correct?

Luke: I tried the fix last night, and it did seem to have a very noticeable
effect on HL2DM, but not on CS:S. I was able to play for a good half-hour (no
crashes, I just stopped playing.) I think these problems are slightly different,
but closely related. If you look in your steam folder, you'll find the fonts in
question in conunter-strike: source/cstrike/resource and for HL2DM half-life 2
deathmatch/hl2mp/resource. CS uses a whole set of different fonts for its
decals, such as cs.ttf, csd.ttf, and cslogo.ttf, to name a few. I tried adding
these font families (they're the same as the filename without the .ttf) to the
if statement in the patch, and while it seemed to last longer (I could get a
solid 10 rounds out of de_dust2) it didn't totally fix the issue.
On a related note, I did notice that when CS crashes, it complains about the
fonts I mentioned above before the debugger tries to start (it never does, don't
know what's up with that.) I'll reproduce and see if I can post these errors and
maybe even a trace to help us nail this one.
