I was fiddling with them quite a bit to nail down the issue for bug 8122 and I never noticed any performance loss. I did notice that memory usage seemed to rise steadily (starting out around 26% and topping out around 42%), but I don't particularly suspect a memory leak, I think it was simply caching things.
