There was still a small problem in IWineD3DDeviceImpl_GetAvailableTextureMem(), which dereferenced the adapter member which is nil when used over the VNC connection. Fixing that (by simply returning some fixed value) it worked fine over VNC. It did however not work with the onboard graphics card, but I didn't have time to investigate further. This was all 0.9.50. The good app has md5sum 6ff499107e5e5731140a4282a7e2baa1 and size 1209739. The winoldap idea was great, and that should be the subject of another bug report, but it doesn't seem to be the cause of my problem. Even if I unzip the file manually (thus bypassing win16 altogether) and run the setup by hand, it still thinks I have mfc42 installed, and doesn't do anything. I copied tahoma.ttf to all the directories (one of them had to be the right one) and it worked.
