So the problem apparently doesn't occur with bmp files but does with tif files. Sorry for the confusion. I mixed this up with another font issue that was fixed somewhere between 0.9.50 and GIT. The fonts look a lot better in GIT (was very hard readable before), but the black background issue persists.
