It seems to be aborting because it can't stop the msiserver service?
Which is strange, since it probably wasn't running...
I wonder if a conformance test for ControlService would be informative.

Summary: docs incorrectly claim that unc paths work
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: documentation
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: codeslinger(a)compsalot.com
The docs for unc path are wrong they do not reflect reality.
According to the docs
http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-guide/misc-things-to-configure#AEN4…
and also according to this rather odious comment
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-users/2007-August/027715.html
unc paths, should work, all you do is create a symlink and you are done.
Well, I am under intense deadline pressure and I just spent two days of effort
trying to get a client/server app to run that requires unc paths. And finally
after a lot of study and banging of head against brick wall, finally I find
this bug #425 which makes it pretty darn clear that not only does unc path not
work, but it never actually has worked!!!!
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=425
So I ask that you kindly please fix the docs so that others are not subjected
to the same levels of tribulations which I have just needlessly gone through.
That bug has been open since 2002, I see no indication that it is going to get
fixed any time soon.
I have the highest respect and admiration for the winehq project and the people
who created it, but this sort of thing is a major black mark against wine. I
will be very reluctant to attempt to use wine in the future.

Summary: Mask of eternity crashes at startup with wine version
0.9.36 and newer
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.45.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux

Component: wine-directx-ddraw
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: deadlock(a)start.no
Kings Quest 8 - Mask of Eternity crashes on startup with an exception error.
The specific error has been attached. Version 0.9.36 didn't have this problem,
and after doing a lot of debugging and regression I located that the problem is
located in a change between version 0.9.36 and 0.9.37. The specific code is
shown below.
wine version 0.9.36, file wine/dlls/ddraw/direct3d.c:
324 d1 = dref;
325 d2 = dref;
326 hr = Callback( (LPIID) &IID_IDirect3DRefDevice,
reference_description, device_name, &d1, &d2, Context);
wine version 0.9.37(and up to version 0.9.45 at least):
327 d1 = dref;
328 d2 = dref;
329 /* The rgb device has the pow2 flag set in the hel caps, but not in
the hal caps */
330 d1.dpcLineCaps.dwTextureCaps &= ~(D3DPTEXTURECAPS_POW2 |
D3DPTEXTURECAPS_NONPOW2CONDITIONAL | D3DPTEXTURECAPS_PERSPECTIVE);
331 d1.dpcTriCaps.dwTextureCaps &= ~(D3DPTEXTURECAPS_POW2 |
D3DPTEXTURECAPS_NONPOW2CONDITIONAL | D3DPTEXTURECAPS_PERSPECTIVE);
332 hr = Callback( (LPIID) &IID_IDirect3DRGBDevice,
reference_description, device_name, &d1, &d2, Context);
I tried commenting out line 330 and 331 in version 0.9.44 and the game ran
without crashing at startup, but there has to be a better way to solve this.

Tab behavior differs from Windows while using Word Viewer 2003's installer.
While this is a trivial matter, I was attempting to write a script using
AutoHotKey to automate testing of the program in Wine/Windows. Since screen
resolution/windows placement can differ very easily, using the keyboard is the
easiest way to make sure the script does what I want. The main difference is
that under Windows, one tab takes me from the license agreement's text to the
checkbox to accept the agreement. Under Wine, it takes me to the cancel button.
Using tab twice under Wine brings me to the checkbox.

Hello,
just a small showcase bug.
Someone emailed me a link to a .NET test app to check its "usefulness".
That app isn't sophisticated nor particularly useful at all (despite its name).
Just a small GUI app with month calendar and hyperlink control.
Its only purpose seems to be to show Wine month calendar control insufficiency
;-)
Steps to reproduce:
1. clean WINEPREFIX
2. sh winetricks dotnet20
3. download from: ftp://ftp.pindersoft.com/DotNetTestDNF2.zip

WINEDEBUG=+loaddll,warn+all wine FL.exe
FL Studio 7 is professional software for creating music. It works *almost*
perfectly but because of this bug it isn't actually usable: most of its WAV
files do not work and this makes the program useless!
As I have said FL Studio make use of WAV files. Some WAV files are in standard
PCM uncompressed audio format and they plays fine. Others use non-standard WAV
format and fails to play at all. Because of that a lot of effects and sounds
cannot be used.
If I run the program with WINEDEBUG=+loaddll, warn+all I get the following
output when I try to play a "non-standard" WAV file: (see attachment). When I
play standard PCM-encoded WAV file there is no such output. I think this output
gives some useful clues but unfortunately I have almost no knowledge about
Widnows sound API so I cannot fix this myself.
Feel free to ask any additional questions. The program has a demo and it is
almost fully functional (see the URL field).
How to reproduce (instruction by Travis Forghani, with minor changes and
comments for better readability):
1) Click on "Packs" to expand it. Then click on "Basses" to expand it. Next,
click on the "BASS_EfEm_C2"; when you click on the BASS_EfEm_C2 effect, the
sound that is supposed to be created is created. This works because
"BASS_EfEm_C2" is standard PCM encoded WAV file.
2) Click on "RealDrumkits" to expand it. Next, click on "RD_Crash". When you
click on the "RD_Crash" effect, the sound that is supposed to be created is not
created and there is no output via the speakers. This doesn't work because
"RD_Crash" is non-standard WAV. But on clean Windows this works out-of-the-box.

While testing out bug 14536 on a computer with dual monitors, I started
FLSynthmaker and its window opened on the right screen, but when I click on the
menu, the menu popped up on the left screen. This made mouse navigation
impossible, so I had to use the arrow keys to move around the menu.

patch to handle null-rootpath equivalent in GetVolumeInformationW
wine-1.1.10
I installed the Ford 1993-1994 truck service manual viewer from CD. The viewer
application requires that the CD be present in a drive before it will show
service data.
The viewer application c:/FORD/PUBS/programs/VIEW16.EXE complains that there is
no CD present, even though there is. (yes, links for d: and d:: were made
correctly in .wine/dosdevices).
It turns out that the application calls GetVolumeInformationW with a "root"
argument of "\\:". In this case, GetCurrentDirectoryW returns the desired root
path, but since root is not null, the code in GetVolumeInformationW uses "\\"
as the drive letter instead (and fails).
Patching GetVolumeInformationW to treat root == "\\:" the same as the null case
results in the application successfully detecting the CD and operating
properly.
Documentation of GetVolumeInformationW on MSDN seems to indicate that there is
a broader range of possible formats for the root parameter than the wine
implementation currently handles, so perhaps a more extensive fix is needed for
the general case.

I was only able to solve the problem by reverting to 0.9.50 AND purging my

Summary: MSI SQL joins on tables with many rows are extremely
slow
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.57.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: msi
AssignedTo: truiken(a)gmail.com
ReportedBy: truiken(a)gmail.com
CC: ead1234(a)hotmail.com
With the current implementation of MSI SQL joins, we perform a Cartesian
product on the tables joined together. In the case where there is no WHERE
clause, this is the correct output, but if there is a WHERE clause, we still
perform the Cartesian product and then filter on the WHERE clause. Though it's
uncommon, there are a few installers (Visual Studio, Nero Express 7) that join
tables with thousands of rows. For example, say we have tables A, B, and C
s.t.
colA colB colC
----- ----- -----
1 1 1
2 2 2
... ... ...
1000 1000 1000
and we have the query
SELECT * FROM A, B, C WHERE `colA`=1 AND `colB`=1 AND `colC`=1
then the current implementation will create a new table with those columns
containing 1000*1000*1000=1 billion rows. Then we check each of the 1 billion
rows for any matches. There are several algorithms for optimizing joins:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Join_(SQL)#Join_algorithms
The solution I'll be working on is the merge join. This solution parses the
WHERE clause, starting with the two tables that the columns of the clause
belong to (colA -> A, colB -> B, etc) and joins those together, making sure to
eliminate rows based on the WHERE clause. Then the next table in the clause is
merged into the previously created table, eliminating rows. This continues
until there are no tables left. One optimization of this solution is to start
with parts of the WHERE clause that compare against literals. For example, the
query:
SELECT * FROM A, B, C WHERE `colA` = `colB` AND `colB` = 1 AND `colC` = 1
We'd start with "`colB` = 1" since the comparison is against a literal. We
perform 1000 comparisons on the rows of table B (count = 1000). The resulting
table is:
colB
----
1
then we do the same for table C (count = 1000), and the merged table is:
colB colC
---- ----
1 1
next we merge this table with table A:
colA colB colC
---- ---- ----
1 1 1
2 1 1
... ... ...
1000 1 1
and we search through this table for the condition `colA` = `colB` (count =
1000). So we've reduced billions of comparisons to 3000.
Unfortunately, the way our SQL engine is implemented, this will not be an easy
task.

* Some installers
I will use WinMerge as the example for the rest of this bug report:
2. Press Ctrl+N to create a new document
3. Enter "A" in the "Untitled left pane"
4. Enter "B" in the "Untitled right pane"
5. Close the application
This will bring up a "Save modified files?" dialog. NOTE: Using tab to navigate
around the dialog sets the focus to the correct items in the correct sequence.
6. Press the left mouse button on one of the "Save changes" radio buttons
7. Press the down arrow key
This should select the "Discard changes" radio button. The button has the
focus, but is not selected. As a workaround, pressing the space key will select
the button.
8. Press the down arrow key
This should select the "Save changes" radio button, cycling the radio button
grouping. This does not work. If you are on the bottom group, it selects the
"Discard All" button. If you are on the top group, no item is selected and
pressing the down arrow key again selects the "Untitled right" edit box.
9. Press the left mouse button on one of the "Discard changes" radio buttons
10. Press the up arrow key
This should select the "Save changes" radio button. The button has the focus,

VC 8.0 one.
"8.0.50727.762" -> Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Pack 8.0.50727.762
At this stage, only .NET Framwork 2.0 redist got installed as prerequisite in
WINEPREFIX.
Because of winetricks' winver 2k hack (missing junction point workaround, bug
12401), VC 8.0.50727.42 runtimes are placed in both: system32 and SxS repo.
This results in errorneous behaviour in case of SxS assembly resolver failure
(app references 8.x CRT assemblies not found in SxS) - a fallback load from
system32 - which causes the CRT error.
I already explained the differences between 2K and XP in several other bug
reports when it comes to loading of SxS assemblies.
In short: prevent any CRT (and ATL/MFC) 8.x+ runtime from being put into
system32!
Such assemblies are never to be loaded from system32 with winver > 2K!
To fix this, 'winetricks dotnet20' step needs to include the removal of these
assemblies from system32 as cleanup procedure.
A second copy is properly installed into SxS as precaution from M$ guys in the
light of win2k -> winxp update which knows about activation contexts/SxS.

..
--- snip .wine/drive_c/windows/system32 ---
The vendor msi installer bug at this stage is that the sub-installer is
executed *before* the VC redist installer which would install all required CRT
dependencies into SxS.
Hence this error is only shown once.
That sub-installer failure seems not critical.
Now one might think: "ok, lets do the usual winetricks vcrun2005 ...
vcrun2005sp1 mess" before install.
If you do this, the error will still remain (assuming you restart with clean
WINEPREFIX).
The reason is the other "old" VC 8.0 CRT version, referenced in dll manifest:
8.0.50608.0
Winetricks dotnet20 installed a VC 8.0.50727.42 CRT version into SxS (after we
removed the ones from system32).
This would ideally work but Wine's loader doesn't support the redirection of
assembly bindings yet.
If you take a look at the policy file from .NET 2.0 installed VC 8 runtime:
"c:\windows\winSxS\policies\x86_policy.8.0.Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_x-ww_77c24773\":
--- snip 8.0.50727.42.policy ---
<bindingRedirect oldVersion="8.0.41204.256-8.0.50608.0"
newVersion="8.0.50727.42"/>
--- snip 8.0.50727.42.policy ---
The policy rule would be satisfied, because the assembly asks for version
8.0.50608.0 and the current "up-to-date" version 8.0.50727.42 can be used for
that.
After VC 8.0 SP1 install (sh winetricks vcrun2005sp1), another policy file is
added:
--- snip 8.0.50727.762.policy ---
<bindingRedirect oldVersion="8.0.41204.256-8.0.50608.0"
newVersion="8.0.50727.762"/>

Summary: Ace Online (aka Space Cowboy/Flysis/Air Rivals) does not
load past launcher with WINE
Product: Wine
Version: 1.0-rc3
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: littlegator(a)gmail.com
I'm somewhat new to Linux, so if anyone offers any fixes, I may not be sure how
to do it. Please inform me of the exact procedure of the fix (or anything that
may advance the situation) and I will gladly do what you ask.
Now, on to the problem. I load up Ace Online with WINE 1.0-rc3 and it brings me
to the launcher. I type in my login details, select my resolution (which is
1024 x 768), uncheck the "windowed" check box (which appears to have no effect
on the output), and wait. The game goes full screen and is white for a few
seconds. It switches to black, then, after about 10 or 15 seconds, a white
square appears in the middle of the screen. It disappear within a few frames of
appearing, and I'm stuck here. Same thing happens when windowed, it just isn't
full screen. During this process, it seems to be outputting every single
mission log in the game to the debug window. The output file is extremely long.
Now, my setup:
I'm running WINE 1.0-rc3 with DirectX9.0 installed using WineTricks. I'm
running a 1024x768 virtual desktop with no window decorations and window
manager can not control the windows.
My PC:
Intel Pentium 4 1.6GHz
512MB RAM (not sure on what type >_>)
ATI Radeon 9700 pro 128MB onboard RAM using latest Catalyst drivers
running 3.5.6-9.fc7 Fedora release: 2.6.21-1.3194.fc7
While I await a response, I'm going to attempt updating Fedora since it's
apparently an older version. I've attached the a couple output files and a
dxdiag if it may be useful.

A user's informix-based app refused to install until
the empty files c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/{services,host}
were created, see
http://winehq.org/pipermail/wine-users/2008-March/030256.html
I looked around a bit for other system32/drivers/etc files.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/130024 describes hosts, services, and protocols
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/105997 describes lmhosts
It looks like some apps find that directory by looking at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DataBasePath
and MSN Messenger 7.5 f*cks up by changing that variable's type, see
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6343068
Getting this all right would be a lot of work. Just creating
two empty files might be reasonable, though, since it
allows the user's app to install.

Dungeon Keeper 2 crashes after working just fine for about 10 minutes. I have
experienced this twice now (out of two attempts at playing a game). I was
playing normally, and noticed no apparent trigger that caused the crash. Both
crashes happened at around 10 minutes into the game (although I didn't
accurately time them).
Using native dinput.dll due to bug 13290. Let me know if additional debug
output is required.

This is the next problem after bug 9809.

The file support/user.mlib is in fact in the cabinet, so my guess is
that our setupapi or cabinet library is just tripping over its shoelaces
and forgetting to create the directory support before trying to create
support/user.mlib.
(And if you rerun the installer to retry it, it bombs right after
you finish answering its questions, with
fixme:msi:MsiConfigureProductExW Not implemented for anything other than local
installs
but that's a different bug.)

Output from attempt to run Enterprise Architect
This was reported in an earlier release (bug 11203) but is still present. Last
good version was 0.9.51 but that's not available for Ubuntu 8.04.
Appears to be fixable by adding return depth; or return 24; after line 300 of
x11drv_main.c but I'm reluctant to offer this as a patch as I don't know what
this might break.
I have listed the test results at
http://test.winehq.org/data/4ece5deeeffa22b66e0a5777b6f700251a0fb691/#group…
as igoddard_laptop (original code) and igoddard_lap_amend (amended with a
"return depth;" line).
Program affected for me is Enterprise Architect.
Platform is Advent QT5500 laptop which uses Intel UMA 950 graphics chipset.

Hello,
a bug for James Hawkins ... low priority.
Encountered this when I accidentally forgot the .NET 2.0 prerequisite before
Office 2007 installation.
Setup dies in wine's fusion due to bugs in CLR metadata processing while
installing primary interop assemblies for Office into GAC.

CLR metadata section header is incorrectly processed (offset calculation).
The version length is rounded to DWORD boundary - this needs to be taken into
account (crash on some assemblies).
Also the CLR metadata tables offset calculation is not correct.
A good crash candidate is "Microsoft.mshtml.dll", the primary interop assembly
(PIA) for mshtml.dll
A good source of information about PE CLR data structures is here:
http://www.ntcore.com/Files/dotnetformat.htm
You might also want to have a look at CFF explorer, one of the rare PE tools
which support .NET/CLR metadata: http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php
If you use it on assemblies with large amount of CLR metadata, like
Microsoft.mshtml.dll PIA, it might take lots of time to parse all tables.
It gives you all the info (metadata table offsets/RVA's) for verification of
calculations.
I wrote my own little test which just calls fusion's
IAssemblyCache_InstallAssembly on assemblies to verify my findings/patches.
I'll leave out any patch snippets to give potential patch implementor full
freedom.
For testing purposes you can use the "Office 2003 Update: Redistributable
Primary Interop Assemblies" from Micro$oft support which is available for
download (see URL).
Extract and run 'msiexec -x O2003PIA.msi'.

With attached patch it goes further - to crash again (separate bug report).

Summary: .NET 3.5 Framework installation problems (msi, bits,

Created an attachment (id=9300)

patch which adds msi.MsiSetExternalUIRecord and
msi.MsiDetermineApplicablePatchesW
Hello,
this (showcase) bug id exists to show/track .NET Framework 3.5 install issues,
e.g. what wine needs to implement/work around.
With VS.NET 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5 released, the Framework 3.5 needs to be
installed first.
Used GIT:
wine --version
wine-0.9.49-331-g7a8eb4c
Prerequisites:
1) set OS config to at least "Windows XP"
2) one volume name (dosdevices/<driveletter>:) must contain "harddisk" or
"ramdisk" and write accessible
cd ~/.wine
mv drive_c harddiskvolume1
cd dosdevices
ln -sf ../harddiskvolume1 c:
The installer then stops at unimplemented msi.MsiSetExternalUIRecord, attached
patch adds simple stub which fixes this.
----
If you downloaded the "small" .NET Framework installer, you now run into a
major showstopper: BITS required
The partial installer depends on: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5713
What is the consensus regarding native BITS and builtin BITS?
Builtin bits might take some time until it gets into usable state.
Native BITS is described here: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6194
though I haven't looked at it for some time.
Will native BITS considered abandoned then (needs some nasty workarounds)?
----
If you downloaded the full installer some messages seem to indicate BITS is
used in full installer too, but it doesn't seem to harm now.

Interestingly there is some undocumented "BitsOverride" which might indicate a
possibility to revert their interal download manager to standard download
procedures.
The showstopper for full installer seem to be various hotfix installers which
are spawned by main installer.
As example I start with hotfix "Windows Imaging Component update" which gets
extracted by installer into
"c:\<guid>\wcu\dotNetFramework\dotNetFX30\WIC_x86_enu.exe" and tries to run it.
This fails and lets overall installer fail too.
It seems to make various specific checks for operating system version/build.
I only quote checks which seem to fail:

--- snip ---
The inf/old catalog file problem...
Anyway one can get around by manually copying these 4 files (WindowsCodecs.dll,
WindowsCodecsExt.dll, WMPhoto.dll, PhotoMetadataHandler.dll) before installtion
into system32.
Extract them from the hotfix installer to have version match.
This seems to work around the hotfix issues/catalog problem.
With the files in place before .NET installation this hotfix is skipped and the
installer runs into:
--- snip ---
wine: Call from 0x7b841450 to unimplemented function
msi.dll.MsiDetermineApplicablePatchesW, aborting
--- snip ---
Attached patch fixes this.
After that it gets further only to stop at another hotfix installer "XPSEPSC" -
the catalog install problem.
So I stop for now because it sucks to work around each single hotfix installer.
Should be good enough to give an idea ...

I'm running Fedora Core 8. Kernel is 2.6.24.3-50.
I used Add/Remove Software to install Wine 0.9.56.
I then installed, without issue, Movie Magic Screenwriter 6.0. The program's
start-up icon was copied to my desktop.
When I click on the icon, I get the following message:
Initialization Error: "This software requires installation of device driver
TPkd and a reboot before running. Please reboot or reinstall the software."
The above-mentioned driver is installed at
~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/drivers/TPkd.sys
A reinstall and/or reboot has no affect.
When I run it from the command line, there is error output, which I have
attached as a plain text file named "WineError.txt". The first line of the
file displays the command entered to start the program.

redistributable and thus using native cryptui.dll is not always tenable.

After installing normally, start Acrobat. Give the application some time to
display any notices about pending updates, etc., and clear them. There is no
need to load a file; this bug pertains to the preferences for the application
itself, not a PDF that's been loaded.
By going to the Edit menu and selecting the "Preferences..." option (or via the
shortcut CTRL + K) it's possible to bring up the Preferences window, but only
the "Categories" listbox control and text label are displayed (on the left-hand
side of the Preferences window), along with OK and Cancel buttons. The
right-hand side of the window, which should display a variety of controls that
change for each category the user selects, is completely blank and displays
only as the window's background color.
I am testing with a stock, plain Debian and Wine installation. No tricks or
borrowed DLLs involved.

I tried hard to gather more information about this bug with the command
"WINEDEBUG=+relay wine ./Acrobat.exe" but the only way I had to catch the
information was via the console's history, and that nearly brought my system to
its knees after it accumulated more than 170MB worth of data. Most of that
data was the result of KERNEL32.GetLastError, .FlsGetValue, and .SetLastError
messages repeatedly incessantly. If someone can tell me how I can prevent
those messages from appearing that would drop the size of the output.
One more thing to note: I tested for the same bug with Acrobat Reader V7.0.9
-- which is available for free from adobe.com -- and I see the exact same bug,
with the exact same console output. That may be useful to know if anyone is
interested in confirming this bug.

AutoDesk Revit Architecture 2009 installation fails.
Everything works up to the part where the installer begins copying files. It
manages to install .NET 2.0 and after that reports that installation failed
with a "Call not implemented" -error. The produced log by the installer is very
vague.
This bug is an exact replica of installation failure with Revit Architecture
2008.

Summary: service control manager API problem: name of named

patch which fixes client vs. service SCM API when using named objects
Hello,
there seems to be a misconception in usage of names for named objects in
service control manager API.
Some people might have experienced such situation: wine hangs for several
seconds on startup (when starting services).
I usually disabled autostart type services (except for builtin ones) and the
problems went away.
Lately while fixing Microsoft Visual Studio .NET installers (2002/2003/2005)
this problem became more and more annoying because the installers and VS.NET
depend on some services, namely "debug manager" (service has to be running).
Consider the following snippet with "service_get_event_handle" trace message
added by me to highlight the problem:

--- snip trace ---
When a service is started, named objects are created to internally communicate
data/events from the service process (dispatcher) to client side SCM API and
vice versa.
Unfortunately there exist service proccesses which pass service names to
dispatcher table (StartServiceCtrlDispatcher) not matching the service name on
the client side (registry "Services" key).
--- snip dlls/advapi32/service.c ---
static DWORD WINAPI service_control_dispatcher(LPVOID arg)
{
service_data *service = arg;
LPWSTR name;
HANDLE pipe, event;
TRACE("%p %s\n", service, debugstr_w(service->name));
/* create a pipe to talk to the rest of the world with */
name = service_get_pipe_name(service->name); <--------- *problem*!
pipe = CreateNamedPipeW(name, PIPE_ACCESS_DUPLEX,
PIPE_TYPE_BYTE|PIPE_WAIT, 1, 256, 256, 10000, NULL );
if (pipe==INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE)
ERR("failed to create pipe for %s, error = %d\n",
debugstr_w(service->name), GetLastError());
HeapFree(GetProcessHeap(), 0, name);
/* let the process who started us know we've tried to create a pipe */
event = service_get_event_handle(service->name); <--------- *problem*!
SetEvent(event);
CloseHandle(event);
..
--- snip dlls/advapi32/service.c ---
As result, different named objects are created and signaled so the client side
can't communicate with the service side using named pipe and events.
This leads to infamous timeout problem (30 sec) and service startup failing.
In case of Microsoft Debug Manager the service is called "mdm" (registry).
The service process itself passes "Microsoft Debug Manager" as name to dispatch
table (see first trace).
Problem: how can both sides communicate a "common" name for named objects?
The service dispatcher part on the service side has only dispatch table data
available which doesn't help much.
I thought about this problem and found a feasible solution ... well call it
"hack" whatever.
If the client side API passes the service name in one of the process startup
parameter members before process creation, the service process' dispatcher
routine is able to access this data and create the named objects used for
communication.
I (ab)used startupinfo "title" member because only wine itself make exclusive
use of most service process startup parameters.
If not considered safe, use reserved/undoc fields...
With that patch applied the services in question start fine and can be
controlled using "net" commands.
No more hangs ;-)

Add HideThreadFromDebugger to winternl.h and to NtSetInformationThread
This API exists in the windows NtSetInformationThread for some reason.
The sensible thing to do in wine here seems to be to just ignore this call.
Patch attached is against 0.9.60.

demo illustrating the problem
if CoFreeUnusedLibraries is called by COM server, it will break RPC channcel
and lead to the errors
Attached is client/server code that demonstrates the problem.
If you comment out CoFreeUnusedLibraries call, it will start to work.
Steps:
-comple all 3 projects in the Workspace (Debug target is the only appropriate
for the sake of demo)
-make sure server and proxy are registered by running testserver.exe
-RegServer, regsvr32 testserverPS.dll
-run testproject.exe (the client)
Expected behaviour:
1. it will show server's message "CServer is created", click ok
2. it will show client's message "press OK when ready", click ok
3. it will show server's message passed by the client "Hello world!", click ok
4. it will show client's message "call succeeded" and client will exit
5. after roughly 6sec it will show that the server is unloaded/
Actual behaviour:
1. it will show server's message "CServer is created", click ok
2. it will show client's message "press OK when ready", click ok
3. it will show server's message passed by the client "Hello world!", click ok
4. it will dump out trouble in the console and show client's message "call
failed"
You may call CoFreeUnusedLibraries anywhere in the appartment and it will break
RPC on the server side. In some cases it will crash whole the server, like in
the demo.
Tested environment:
Fedora Core 8, 32bit, x86, wine 1.0 installed through the updates

When running the Visual Studio 2008 installer the setup window appears, and
starts loading installation components, after about 30 seconds full processor
usage, err:seh:setup_exception_record stack overflow appears in the terminal
output (see attachment) the progress bar increases slightly, and then it seems
to hang.
Checking with strace on the setup.exe process (the main one, the other one
gives me 'Operation not permitted', even when sudo'ing it) shows it is waiting
to read from a pipe, which is red when doing 'ls -l', I assume that means the
pipe doesn't exist any more?

To get the installer to even try, you have to do "winetricks volnum".
The next problem is while copying file 41 of 41, $shtdwn$.req,
it gets a sharing violation. The file it's trying to copy
is there, but can't be opened, possibly because it has
never been closed.

Interestingly, even on Windows this file can't be opened sometimes

It's an interesting mystery. What triggers that file to be closed on Windows?

I get the following error:
wine: Call from 0x7b840fc8 to unimplemented function
hal.dll.ExAcquireFastMutex, aborting
It would be great if that function were implemented :)
(I'm running epoc.exe, an emulator for Symbian development)

As reported at
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=5781&iTestingI…,
the Text Tool, Callout Tool, and Option menu items do not function properly in
SnagIt 8.2.3, in spite of nearly flawless performance otherwise. This may be
related to the Gecko-rendering engine.
