I have copied original windows ntdll.dll over the wine one, and the games still
crashes! (much less, but still does) So it may not be ntdll related... As said
Stephan Wienczny, it might have something to do with other things, maybe sound
dlls.

This means that it can't switch the BPP, so Wine will have to do conversion
manually instead of telling the GPU to just use 8 bpp natively. This results in
slower performance(still fast enough to handle old ddraw games on somewhat
modern hardware(Pentium 3+), but doesn't mean the game won't display

Stefan - if Wine's 8-24 conversion works, why do I get this error when I try to
run the game without using the script/code mention in the previously attached
log file?
abe@swan ~ $ wine Drive-C/Program\ Files/Microsoft\ Games/Pinball\

fixme:x11drv:X11DRV_desktop_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to
8
Is it trying to tell me that it wants to switch the X server itself to 8bpp
mode? The game runs in windowed mode, not full screen so this should NEVER be
necessary.

The problem with this is that none of the developers uses a X server without
GLX. So it breaks regularly.
Wine DOES have a 8->24 bpp conversion. If your game is broken than that is due
to something else, not due to missing bit depth conversion

As of version 0.9.56 this is still broken. However, I have noticed that the
error messages have changed. The last working version is still 0.9.45. I have
attached a log file showing a new batch of errors. Incidentally, if I run this
game within my existing X session, it doesn't crash, presumably because my
existing X session has glx of course. Like previous versions of wine, I can't
actually play the game on my current X session because wine STILL doesn't have
a working 8bpp->24bpp translation functionality (resulting in a black window,
as before).

Hi Dmitry, after updating to current git (that make CS3 crash too, like CS2),
and applying the fix you send to wine-patches, it still crashes exactly the
same way as in comment #42. So no luck yet.

Summary: Tray icons in Gnome's notification area are broken.
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.55.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: shell32
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ohrn+wine(a)opera.com
Tray icons in the Gnome notification area are broken.
Instead of showing the correct tray icon an existing icon from a non-Windows
utility is duplicated. Sometimes this duplicate dissapears and there is just a
blank space in the notification area.
The tray icon does not respond to mouse clicks or other events so pop-up menus
connected to the icon are not accessible.
I've tested this with several different Windows applications and they all
exhibit the same behaviour.
I've also tested this with all Wine versions back to 0.9.52 and all have the
same problem.
I'm using Fedora 8 and the Gnome notification about box shows version 2.20.2.

I think I've found another way to avoid this bug. If you completly disable
sound by using "./Woe.exe -nosound" you don't get lockups. I currently think
that this bug is somewhere in the wines dsound.dll.
I ran the test program yesterday and it did not produce the error as expected
but ran out of resources...

I just want to mention that I've managed to install Visual Studio 2005
completely with latest WINE trunk.
1) installed "vcrun6" (with winetricks)
2) applied 1 patch from http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8439#c3
(Required for overall installation)
3) applied patched from http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=3754
(Required for .NET 2.0 installation)
4) applied "fix for MSI ACTION_RegisterProduct to store all properties also in
InstallProperties registry key"
(Without this patch Visual Studio 2005 will think that MS XML 6.0 and some
others is still uninstalled!)
NOTE: "patch which fixes MSI_GetProductInfo to treat specific properties with
correct type" is no longer needed with latest trunk.
Installation goes without problem, however running "devenv.exe" causes several
problems with .NET 2.0 packages and crashes a lot :( too bad. Most crashes and
errors are because of few missing WINE API functions, and incomplete .NET 2.0
support.
Still I think WINE's close to run Visual Studio! which will be great news for
multi-platform developers.
I'm attaching screenshots :)
