There's still no link to wine-patches(a)winehq.org (and the appropriate
instructions) visible in Bugzilla. And adding such a link in the menu is
certainly a trivial task. I'm still confident such a link would encourage
casual developers to sending their patches much more than now.

Just wanted to comment on this, since it seems relevant to this problem.
I've managed to install and play Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds (Full
Version) using Wine 0.9.56.
I've installed the game twice, once with the winecfg "Allow the window manager
to control the windows" setting set to disabled, and the other time with it
enabled.
On the disabled setting, the installer works right up to the end of
installation, and then appears to hang, but after resetting X (using
CTRL-ALT-Backspace), I was then able to play the game using the normal wine
commands.
On the enabled setting, the installer works as it should, but after starting
the game, the screen remained black and was therefore unplayable. Opening
winecfg and disabling the setting again allowed the game to be played.
If it helps at all, I've attached the console output from during the
installation (#10947).

Oops, sorry I never replied to the last query. I'm running the one in Fedora 7
RPM package freetype-2.3.4-3.fc7
While a few components have been updated in Fedora 7 since then, I still have
that problem. The version of wine I'm using now is the one in the RPM package
wine-0.9.42-1.fc7.. Newer versions do not work at all with my software. :(

Game install smoothly and starts as expected. However, at the main menu, the
mouse displays unusual behaviour. The icon clearly reacts to mouse movement,
but it is re-centered several times a second and appears to move in the
opposite direction to the mouse's movement. Buttons still work correctly (can
exit if you can move the icon far enough to the 'exit' button and click it
before it's re-centered) - it seems only the motion is affected.

This is still an issue in wine-0.9.56. After you click past the invisible
splash screen wine starts the debugger and the game hangs. If you uncheck the
audio driver in winecfg and start the game it will run fine without sound.

Please reopen this bug.
It seems that the retail version of this game has problems witch the demo
version doesnt seem to have.
The here reported dmusic crash still occurs. Ofcourse you can use native dm*
dlls which leads to the crash reported in bug 9001.

Alan, this bug was freebsd specific.
I think we should close it, it seems to have been abandoned.
Your problem is probably different.
What version of Wine and Ubuntu are you using?
Does 'rm -rf ~/.wine' help (careful, don't do that if
you have stuff in your fake C: drive you care about)?

Does it really work? DOS applications are MZ executable and don't have NT
headers. The Win32 console applications are PE executables but they don't
require winevdm but run directly.

So I suppose VirtualDubMod[1] is a strange app :(
When DirectX is used, only video panes are visible and the remaining of the
screen is entirely black. I see no difference between 0.9.56 and earlier
versions.
I hoped this bugfix would concern this app.
VirtualDub[2] has the same bug (for DirectX). But it also offers an OpenGL
mode:
* 0.9.54: video panes were black
* 0.9.56: now it works on my desktop (K7, nvidia-5200), but I have strange
things on my laptop (x86_64 smp, nvidia-7300) -- still searching while I get
different results...

The current (2008/02/23) website for WXTide32 is somewhat ambiguous about using
an installer. The recommended course (as per the site) is to simply unzip the
app archive, map archive, and, if desired, the ship's bell .WAV archive into
C:\Program Files\WXTide32\ and run the app (setup.exe is depreciated in this
scenario). As nothing is installed in the windows tree (e.g., no .DLL's are
added to system32) and no icons are added to the Start menu, the value of the
"install" is questionable. Based on personal use of this app under WinXP, it
is highly likely that setup.exe is inherently unstable and any problems
encountered are not at all Wine-related, or of academic interest at best. V4.7
runs well enough under Wine, excluding detail problems discussed elsewhere,
that the assessment "garbage" for "4.x" (sic) should be upgraded.
Finally, attempts to contact the author, after one brief exchange, have failed
repeatedly (two known e-mail addresses now bounce). The forum link on the
app's site remains closed after it was hijacked, on 2008/01/07, by a porn site.
In fact, I discovered the attack (one minute it lead to a low-activity forum,
the next it was "teenage sluts" time...) and was able to advise the author of
the problem. After closing the link, he's basically "fallen off the face of
the Earth".

Present in WXTide32 V4.7 and reported as Bug 11562 under Wine 0.9.55 as
possible comctl32 bug (based on stderr messages). Also present in 0.9.56
although no stderr messages result from the blank popup appearing.
