Older cards (like my TNT2) do have GL_EXT_pixel_buffer_object, which does almost exaclty the same thing, but according to Roderick, with a little more housekeeping required. This would be the way to go. Perhaps I should open another bug to explicitly state this, and pester Roderick/Stefan some more :) See http://wiki.winehq.org/DirectDraw under 'Direct framebuffer access'. The strange thing it that the "Tab" key still brings up the console thus the program is stll listening for keyboard input but obviously ignores when pressing ENTER to start the game.
