Various games force the installation of DirectX, after this installation a VB6
heavy game utility titled GURPS Chracter Assistant fails to start. The program
will display a splash screen and a window allowing datasets to be chosen, but
afterward crashing displaying an error traced to ole32. The program requires
the use of native riched20 and oleaut32 and is a character creation utility for
a tabletop roleplaying game titled GURPS from Steve Jackson Games.
Clearing the error currently requires erasing the Windows directory, rebuilding
it, replacing the native DLLs and reinstalling the utility.
I do not have a back trace to send yet, however I will reproduce the error and
upload it once I am able.

I tried both manual installation and "winetricks mono19", but nothing changed.

I'm going to attach wine output of both installation with winetricks and the

fine. When clicking, the cursor jumps on the mirrored location symmetrical to

when using comctl32.dll on windows and use for example regedit with it, then
collapsing of treeview items messes up the treeview.
This is due to not using any ClipRegion in ScrollWindowEx when collapsing.
Maybe there's also a bug in ScrollWindowEx.
To fix, simply replace
ScrollWindowEx (infoPtr->hwnd, 0, scrollDist, &scrollRect, NULL,
NULL, NULL, SW_ERASE | SW_INVALIDATE);
with
ScrollWindowEx (infoPtr->hwnd, 0, scrollDist, &scrollRect, &scrollRect,

ReportedBy: liquitsnake(a)gmx.net
When windows/system.ini has more than 20 lines (not counting empty lines), AT1,
a game, gives a dialog box on start complaining about "memory access violation"
and crashes. When I remove system.ini or remove at least 4 random lines in that
file, I don't get this error. It doesn't matter which lines I remove, but
longer lines with more text seem to work better
So I tried to find out if this is related to file size instead, so I filled the
file up with single bytes until it wouldn't work anymore. Indeed, there appears
to be a limit to working file-size, but this limit depends on WHAT you fill the
file up with. Strange.
After additional testing, I also discovered that I get the same phenomena with
win.ini. If i remove it or a few lines in that file, AT1 also starts working
again. Even combinations of removing lines in both win.ini and system.ini work!
I have to say, this is the strangest bug I've ever encountered. But I swear I
can fully reproduce it.

I am new to Ubuntu, and have read so much in the past few weeks in tutorials on
many apps for linux. When I first downloaded Wine program to install some of my
.exe files. It worked well with Macromedia and Photoshop. However just one day
after I rebooted the machine I tried to install another .exe file and I got a
screen that is totaly unreadable! This is the case for the "WINEFILE" THE WINE
REGKEYS AND 'A-N-Y' .EXE APP I TRY TO INSTALL. I installed the Photoshop via
Wine, but it was a blind walk through! Meaning I guessed at the "NExt" and
"Type of Install" buttons.. Once it installed, I saw an icon on the
desktop,..so I assumed it worked.. ONly problem is that the app wont execute
when I click on it. And to get into the Winefile I cant see anything.. I have
tried to uninstall Wine and put it back in as a fresh start, but nothing! I
have read the articles to those that are similar to my problem, and I have
removed the ttf- fonts, but still nothing..
Is anyone else having this issue?????

When I select this resolution (coming from 1280x1024), my second monitor
flickers on momentarily, then goes out. The first monitor shows all of the
text on the main menu screen 2x wider than it normally is. When you mouse-over
the text, it redraws it in the proper aspect ratio. The second monitor stays
off and the game proceeds to fit everything on the first monitor, still running
1280x1024.

console output
Environment:
- Ubuntu Linux 7.10: Gutsy Gibbon
- xfce desktop
- wine-0.9.49, installed form the winehq.org APT repository.
- no windows installation
- trying to run Sid Meier's Pirates! installed from cd with no patches
- nVidia GeForce 6600 GT video card
I was able to install Sid Meier's Pirates without much trouble, and managed to
get past the two animated studio splash screens at startup by pressing Esc
before each one finished. (The screen was blank white instead of showing the
animation, but the familiar splash screen audio played.) The game's title
screen then appeared, and then the process seemed to stop dead. I did not
reach the game's main menu.
Please see the attachment for wine console output.
Wine settings:
- Application Settings -> Windows Version: Windows 98
- Graphics -> Allow DirectX apps to stop the mouse: no
- Graphics -> Allow the window manager to control: yes
- Graphics -> Emulate a virtual desktop: no
- everything else is set at default values
Steps to reproduce:
Delete the .wine directory, and run wine config to create a new one.
Run the Pirates! install program
Try to start the game.
Directory and command line used to start the game:
junk@ocelot:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Pirates!$
