Summary: Strong Bad's Cool Game: launcher cannot connect to
internet
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.16
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: VincentBeers(a)gmail.com
I haven't played the game Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People in a few
months, but last time I tried playing it the game worked (after getting a
native d3dx9_36.dll). Since then this specific DLL has been implemented into
Wine itself, apparently.
In 1.1.16 I tried rerunning the game and now two new problems (regressions)
appeared (I'm making two bug entries).
This is the second bug I have encountered: the launcher does not seem to be
able to connect to the internet. This is a serious thing, because the launcher
is there to make sure that you can log into your online account and have it
check if you bought the game so you can play the full version.
I have tried two test occasions:
- One where I installed Internet Explorer 6 through Winetricks. The result was
that I saw most of the launch screen now, but it simply wouldn't log in or
register anything so I could only play the demo.
- One where I used a clean wineprefix. The result was that I saw a simple white
page asking me to enter the serial code (normal, was like this in older Wine).
I entered my code. The result was that it just asked me the exact same after I
entered it and clicked the button - nothing changed and I think this is because
it can't connect to the server for some reason.
Neither problem existed a few versions back, I could just register and play the
game no problem.
For testing purposes: if you don't have a serial number you can choose to play
the demo, but only if the launcher screen shows up a bit more correctly (no
white page). This can only be done if you have IE6 installed, however (crashed
when I installed IE7).

Summary: Hardware Cursor does not work with OpenGL(look here for
a workaround)
Product: Wine

Platform: All

Status: UNCONFIRMED

AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: eiffel56(a)gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=19812)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=19812)
A workaround for the non-existing hardware cursor in World of Warcraft
First: This is _not_ a bug of Wine, Blizzard just doesn't implement that
feature. I've created this bugreport to share the workaround.
The workaround is based on the work of
SKLP(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1051483), I just enhanced it a
bit and posted it here as I don't think developing it in a
distribution-specific forum is a good idea.
This workaround implements a "fake" hardware cursor. You still can't tick the
"Hardware Cursor" option in the WoW settings, but thats not necessary. What it
does is to ignore if the game instructs to hide your normal cursor. In addition
it hides your normal cursor if you press the left or right mouse button. You
can also replace your normal cursor(e.g. to look like the WoW cursor). It ships
a blank cursor for WoW, so the ingame cursor doesn't always lag behind your
normale one. All together, it mostly feels like a real hardware cursor. There
is only one exception: If your WoW cursor would change, e.g. if you're pointing
on an attackable mob, the changed icon will be shown below your normal one. I
think its possible to hide them, but I don't know which filename WoW
expects(have to look around).
I've attached the patch together with four files. The first, blank.blp, is a
blank cursor for WoW. Copy it as "Point.blp" to WOWFOLDER/Interface/Cursor.
This is allowed by Blizzard, its the official way of changing the ingame cursor
icon.
The second one, "normal", is an XCursor you can use. It looks exactly like the
usual ingame cursor. The other two ones are the sources for "normal", you can
regenerate it with "xcursorgen config > normal". I've taken the cursor from
http://zanowin.deviantart.com/art/WoW-Cursors-28331812.
Just set the environment variable "WOW_CURSOR" to the XCursor you want to use,
for example
export WOW_CURSOR="$HOME/.winewow/normal"
If you don't set it, it will use your pre-set cursor.
Maybe someone discovers a way of determining which cursor the game is
displaying(for example, the sword if you're pointing on an attackable mob).
This would end up in an illusion of a real hardware cursor(actually, it would
be a real hardware cursor).

Reverses 401e99b0c074af848379b2602df37fb1e6c7536b hunk 1
This bug is a regression and affects only current git, 1.1.26 release is fine.
A regression test turned out that hunk 1 from commit
401e99b0c074af848379b2602df37fb1e6c7536b causes this problem. Manually
reversing it on current git solves it for me. Reversing it via "git revert" or
something similiar won't work as we don't have
IWineD3DDeviceImpl->activeContext anymore. The attached patch applies to latest
git, reversing 401e99b0c074af848379b2602df37fb1e6c7536b hunk 1.
I don't know why the entire code was removed. Is there an equivalent somewhere?
Or should it be impossible to reach that point? I'm not that into the code.
If not, and we decide to add the code again, we should probably also add hunk
2.
How to trigger:
1. Log in(may crash here already as EVE has to render up to 3 avatars).
2. Open the "Help" window on your Neocom, choose "Suppport" Tab and click on
"Show carreer agents".
3. Close and open the carrer agent window a few times until you get a backtrace
;).

OpenAL32.dll.
The OpenAL32.dll and wrap_oal.dll DLLs in wine are different from the DLLs
installed into Windows. When I replaced them with Windows ones Warzone runs OK.
Warzone 2100 installer runs the OpanAL installer which installs the DLLs.
Previously I installed Warzone into wine 1.1.10 or 1.1.13 (do not remember) and
the game started OK.
My best guess is that a bug has been introduced into wine between 1.1.10 and
1.1.18 that makes the OpenAL installer think that it is running on Windows 64
and install wrong DLLs.

Backtrace of two crashes
ASPI (online version) crashes randomly, usually when network connection is bad.
Reproducibility: crash occurs on cca. 15% of all runs
Backtrace is attached. I'm willing to do more testing if needed.

See the labels on top and bottom
Vertical labels of quad-chip package are not aligned to pins, works OK on
Win32. Can provide partial sources for the MFC class displaying this window
(directly to some Wine developer with no public disclosure).

Summary: regression: PAF 5 help window text is blank

stdout/stderr output from Wine when user clicks on a new chapter heading to
view
In application, PAF (Personal Ancestral File) 5, the help window (brought up by
the yellow question mark in the tool bar) right-hand text pane is blank with
the most recent couple of Wine versions. The help window uses Wine Gecko.
This is a regression, as it worked better with several versions up and
including 1.1.11 than it does more recently.
With Wine version 1.1.11, the text would display. With Mandriva 2008.0, it
displayed very well. The same Wine version with Mandriva 2009.0 displays
strangely, but the text can be read if the user really wants to read it. I
have not investigated the issue between the two Mandriva releases.
Wine version 1.1.12 would not install without applying a patch to the Wine
source, so results there are a bit muddy.
With Wine version 1.1.13, the right-hand help window is always blank, even when
there should be text displayed. Wine version 1.1.14 behaves identically to
1.1.13. I'll attach the stdout/stderr output from Wine in case that helps
isolate the problem. This output happens whenever the user clicks on another
chapter of text to view.
David Lee Lambert has logged the blank help text window problem in his test
results using Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 "Etch".
I would be happy to provide debug channel output. However, my work schedule
does not leave me enough spare time to run a regression.
