Summary: Music in Age of Wonders 2 demo causes buzzing sound in
left stereo channel
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.50.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: wine-multimedia
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: sharparrow1(a)yahoo.com
(Demo available at http://www.triumphstudios.com/ageofwonders2/files.html; it
installs quite painlessly.)
When the music in enabled and playing, there is a buzzing sound in the left
stereo channel (I'm using headphones, so I can very clearly tell it's only in
the left channel.) The buzzing is continuous, but the volume seems to vary
with the music: it seems that the buzzing suddenly gets louder after low notes.
(You might have to wait a few seconds before the buzzing becomes obvious on
the title screen.)
Note that the audio file itself is fine: it's a regular MP3, and it plays
without any buzzing in VLC. Also, there doesn't seem to be any buzzing with
the music disabled.
I'm using Wine 0.9.50 on Ubuntu 7.10.

The best way to enter text using DNS9 is with Dictation Box, a temporary window
that is called into being with the voice command "Show Dictation Box."
The box is supposed to close with the command Transfer, which is supposed to
copy the text into a buffer and paste it into the current application, wherever
the cursor was before DB was opened.
The Dictation Box opens correctly, and text enters correctly. But the Transfer
command does not place the text in any buffer at all -- the text just
disappears, and DB with it.
I have tried to paste into both DragonPad and Notepad. Neither works, although
both should.
I have run the program using a terminal. There is no output when the Transfer
command is made.
This is the terminal output when DB comes up.

In the Quake Wars demo when you scroll the mouse wheel, it is supposed to move
the voice shortcut selection up or down by one. In Wine it is scrolling twice
instead (so you can only select 1, 3, 5 etc.).
The normal terminmal output probably isn't useful for this as it doesn't
generate anything when scrolling. Is there anything I should attach? I have
set this to dinput as I know the game uses dinput, but this may be wrong.

Unfortunately, on doing so, comments and bug links were deleted and not moved.
Comments are no big loss, but having to search for the bugs and add them again

Is this intentional, or has something gone wrong?

Summary: Very bad performance in Monolith games (NOLF, F.E.A.R.)
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.12
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: zarquon(a)t-online.de
Many Monolith games show very bad performance (at least in some levels). The
most extreme one is naturally F.E.A.R. (although AFAIK I have everything set to
medium and optimized my WINE settings according to AppDB, e.g. hardware shaders
and offscreen rendering to FBO), but since I also encountered rather hefty
performance problems in the much older "No one lives forever" series I think
the bottleneck is probably code typically used in many Monolith games,
isolating which may be much simpler in older games like NOLF, as opposed to
pretty cutting edge stuff like F.E.A.R.
I have an x86_64 dual core Linux system with 4 GB of main memory and an Nvidia
GF7900GS with 512MB RAM, which can run even Prey under Wine like a charm. In
F.E.A.R. OTOH, frame rates dropped to something like 4 FPS on the most extreme
occasions, despite medium settings. When I monitored my graphics card's
temperatures during one session, it looked like it wasn't really doing much, so
the bottleneck has to be somewhere in the emulation layer.
Looks like you can download a demo version of NOLF here:
http://www.fileplanet.com/49582/40000/fileinfo/No-One-Lives-Forever-Demo
and NOLF2 would be here:

However, a user can simply add a new drive for their home directory, shared

As far as I can see, '$shtdwn$.reg' is not prefixed with a dot or anything, so
that can't be the problem here... Right?

The problem is the installer expects the file to be hidden, in the Windows way,
e.g., not a '.', but given the hidden attribute, which Wine does not support.

You said:

I thought this was the way Wine does it now :)
What about this: Wine gets (for case insensitivity) a solution like ciopfs: all
files are stored in lower case, and then Wine keeps a database file (sqlite or
so?) containing the original filename and other non-ext properties, like
whether they are hidden. Using SQLite, it wouldn't be too slow; Wine doesn't
need to read all files in the directory since the files are lowercase.
It only needs to search if the lowercase file does not exist, in which case it
does search and if it finds a file, it renames it to lowercase and adds it to
the database to speed up future searches; this is necessary to merge from older
Wine versions. This solution will only be noticeably slow when an application
continuously asks for a non-existent file; and it will be just as slow as the
old Wine solution. It will also be backwards compatible, only older versions of
Wine will not return the original filename but the lower case one (since they
search the whole directory anyway).
Any objections, except that SQLite support is needed?
--- Comment #22 from Vitaliy Margolen <vitaliy(a)kievinfo.com> 2009-05-25 16:05:44 ---
(In reply to comment #21)
> Any objections, except that SQLite support is needed?
You forgetting that Wine doesn't have it's own FS. Nothing prevents a program
outside of Wine to copy a file into "C:".
Also what about the rest of the root file system (/)?
This can only be supported for files created from within Wine. The actual
attributes can be stored in the special hidden file in the same directory
(preferred) or the globally (not portable).

That's only a real problem as far as that program only writes lowercased
files... I think that's an acceptable thing, isn't it?

It would just work like wine works now; readdir() I guess. :)

Ok. I agree the main flaw in the idea (the fact that from outside wine, the
case insensitivity isn't enforced) makes it a no-go. I could implement this
special hidden file support (or even generally, extra file flag support) in
Wine, but it may take a moment since I'm totally not accustomed to Wine's
source, I've never seen a bit of it.
If there's anything I should read about the plans related to this before I
start, please drop me some links and I'll get coding. (that's apart from the
normal stuff a beginning Wine developer should read, I can find those on my own
;) )

maybe one could use xattr to store a user.wine.hidden
attribute with the file... but Ubuntu doesn't ship with
/home mounted with user_xattr, so that's not likely to
fly any time soon.

Changing description as suggested by AF to just the hidden file bug,
changing category to ntdll.
Will file another bug for the next remaining problem.

Column reordering implementation
Hi, this patch should complete column reordering implementation. It should
apply cleanly on current (wine-1.1.26-232-g39876f4).
I'd like to see any feedback/test results here to catch any possible
regressions, test it please with all ListView applications available for you.

If it's a regression since the time it's been reported fixed please perform
the regression test.
