This also happens when just normally browsing around. I imagine it's caused by particular flash ads (a Microsoft one seemed to trigger the latest problem). This is with Wine from Oct 18th. I use Firefox3 every day or two for a little dogfood testing, and today is the first time I noticed it, so it's likely to be a new ad rather than a new wine problem. I removed .wine* folders before trying, so there should be no previous configurations causing problems. I don't have pulseaudio installed at all, so I'm trying to use ALSA backend. I have attached output of (aplay -L) with and without usb soundcard. (I also had the ALLUSERS patch reverted.) As mentioned in the appdb (?), you have to close the flickering news window to get the file open dialog to respond.
