hack to improve performance greatly
Aliens vs Predator 2 game (DirectX8, I think) is slower in wine by a factor of
5-10 at least, often giving seemingly just a few fps even on lowest settings
whereas on windows it runs great on highest settings. Basically unusable.
The cause is certainly this:
fixme:d3d_draw:drawPrimitive Using software emulation because manual fog
coordinates are provided
I'm sure because a hack that disabled this software emulation makes the game
run in much more acceptable speed. I'm at the moment unaware what side effects
it causes, but the game looks mostly allright with it (I didn't manage to go
beyond the very first room though because of mouse input bug).

But the game displays in the left of the screen only. I attached a screenshot

The application tells shell32 to write the .lnk file to a specific
C:\path\to\file.lnk location and remembers that location. Any attempt to move
or rename the .lnk after that - even to the other desktop - loses that file and
stops the application from deleting it on uninstall.
The only thing I can think of that would fix this is to virtualize the
filesystem - eg. use a FUSE module that merges
~/.wine/drive_c/users/user/Desktop with ~/Desktop when reading, but write .lnk
files to ~/.wine/drive_c/users/user/Desktop and everything else to ~/Desktop.

I have done a block of uniscribe work (usp10.dll) to greatly improve the bidi
support. As of the May 6th 2010 commit applications that use usp10.dll should
start rendering things with bidi ordering correct. This includes Internet

Mirroring work is ongoing, and shaping is still completely unimplemented.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Vostro 1000 using an AMD 64 processor. I
loaded wine 1.1.42 using synaptic and ran wine config.
I tried to use the wine loader to load the M$ windows based program called
Memory Map. This will not run unless a version of IE 4 (or higher) is
installed. The installation failed with the error message "IE4 or higher is
required" (can't remember the exact wording).
I tried various fixes as noted in this link:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1472132
but the only way I could get Memory Map to run under wine was to install the 32
bit version of Ubuntu 10.04.

Dmitry, that is the (indirect) part of my question :)
If Wine's design is too restricting, then in real kernel you could do a lot
more things. That's why I have asked about LKM usefulness with regard to
supporting copyprotection mechanisms.
Readimg mentioned wiki page about GG is useless as it doesn't describe
architectural it's aspects.
But now I've found technical Anastasius reply on this, so my question is over:

Well, there can be many solutions:
Some dummy drivers or a specific routine for emulating them so GameGuard can
recognize them.
There can be many ways for emulating them, or maybe some module just for
emulating gameguard as it can check for it.

Wine has 2 desktops: the user desktop under C:\users\user\Desktop, and the
public desktop under C:\users\Public\Desktop.
Applications that install .lnk files to the public desktop end up putting those
files under ~/.wine/drive_c/users/Public/Desktop, from which winemenubuilder
generates a .desktop file in ~/Desktop. All is well.
But some applications (eg. WinRAR) want to install .lnk files to the user's
desktop, which is ~/.wine/drive_c/users/user/Desktop, but that isn't a
directory, it's just a symlink to ~/Desktop. So the .lnk file goes onto the
real desktop instead of the hidden one.
The selection of where to save the .lnk happen in shell32's IShellLink's
IPersistFile COM interface, before winemenubuilder is launched. By the time
winemenubuilder runs, the .lnk file already exists in the wrong place.
It would be possible for winemenubuilder to move or delete the .lnk file after
it generates the .desktop file, but then we'd lose track of the .lnk <->
.desktop mapping which winemenubuilder can do in order to delete .desktop files
when the corresponding .lnk files are gone (because eg. the application was
uninstalled). Some more intelligent Wine desktops <-> ~/Desktop synchronization
might be necessary.

I will upload crash logs from at least five of these games. But first, I want
to know what to do with this bug reports, as they are messy and confusing. In
the forum, I was told to declare one as duplicate of the other, and that's what
I did, but maybe it's better to close both 9001 and 9121 and creat two new ones
wich accurately describe each of the problems.

The bugs do look somewhat similar.
I'm pretty sure the originally reported crashes for both reports should no
longer happen (http://bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=10939 and
http://bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=7325). I can't say much about the

that that's necessarily a Direct3D bug.

The crash logs look different because there are two different bugs, but they
affect various games from WE series, including WE8 and PES6.

Summary: Regression needed to fix some errors that prevent apps
to work correctly on OpenSolaris
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.33

Errors I get while running any application
This is the first bug I file, so I apologize if I missed something.
>From version 1.1.33 on (I tried it up to 1.1.40; sorry for the delay, but wine
was not building on OpenSolaris[1]), wine gives some errors while running any
application (at least, every application that i have installed); also I'm not
sure if these problems happen just on OpenSolaris or on other OS aswell. All
the errors I encountered are in the log that I attached.
With most applications (for istance, Guild Wars, Plants vs Zombies), this
happened while starting them, which led to an empty black screen (wine is still
responding though), but with a few ones this happens after performing some
actions (for istance, Guilty Gear XX #RELOAD, this happens at the character
selection screen: the graphics gets ruined and the game is slowed down to the
point that the seconds timer isn't going down).
I've run a bisect between 1.1.32 and 1.1.33, and I found out that this patch is
causing the issue:
1aa749d9e7ee54f221373ccb2b47bcb31ef6533f is first bad commit
commit 1aa749d9e7ee54f221373ccb2b47bcb31ef6533f
Author: Alexandre Julliard <julliard(a)winehq.org>
Date: Tue Oct 27 19:06:48 2009 +0100

I tried building wine from the git repository reverting only that patch (of
course, adding the patch[2] to fix the compilation problem on OpenSolaris[1]),
and it works flawlessy.
As a closing note, this has been tested with both a clean .wine directory and
my usual one, with the same results; the version of oSol that I'm using is:

In the previous ubuntu version it worked perfectly with wine 1.1-43, so I
suspect the ATI driver, although there might be a relation with wine.
This system suffered from an ATI bug in the previous ubuntu version:

I'm running Ubuntu, 9.04. 64-bits.
When I upgrade from the wine version in Ubuntu's repositories to 1.1.43, and
run the latest Spotify client (0.4.3.383), my xwindows session abruptly crashes
and I get thrwn out to the logi screen.
This did not happen with the last version of Spotify.
And, if I downgrade wine to version 1.1.31 (the one in ubuntu's repos)
everything works.
So: the combination of wine 1.1.43 and Spotify 0.4.x, and my x64 system,
doesn't seem like a good combo.
See attached log.

Hello,
unfortunately it appears the problems has even worsened:
Now the application crashes without even starting with the following errors:
wine Circ.exe
err:module:import_dll Library krb5_32.dll (which is needed by
L"C:\\ALEPH_20\\Circ\\bin\\Circ.exe") not found
err:module:import_dll Library comerr32.dll (which is needed by
L"C:\\ALEPH_20\\Circ\\bin\\Circ.exe") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for
L"C:\\ALEPH_20\\Circ\\bin\\Circ.exe" failed, status c0000135
This is with ALEPH version 20.01, wine 1.1.43 and Ubuntu 10.04 32bit
Also the installer, which previously worked without problems, now complains
about random dlls missing (i.e. msvcirt.dll which instead is present and other
ones) and aborts the installation. This test has been made by manually copying
a working installation from a native windows into wine's drive_c folder.

I am using a Logitech USB headset with microphone when playing TF2 and I am
told by others that when I talk it sounds broken-up (stuttered audio) and
crackly.
So I think I can confirm that this is still a problem with Wine 1.1.43 and ALSA
(over PulseAudio on Ubuntu 10.04, was a problem for me in 9.10 as well). Is
there some test I can do to confirm this is correect?

Log of trying to scroll the chipset in RPG-Maker 2000
I found this bug using the DIB engine. Though most parts of the RPG-Maker are
working much faster then without the DIB engine, one can not scroll the chipset
on the left side.
Just a quick note on the program: The RPG-Maker 2000 (rm2k for short) is a
program to create 2d-games. The chipset is a set of tiles you can use to create
maps. The problem with the engine is, that you can't scroll through it. But if
you extend the window, you can see more of the set.
I think the following lines of the log are the important ones:
[...]
err:dibdrv:_DIBDRV_ConvertDIBtoDDB SetDIBits failed
trace:dibdrv:DIBDRV_DeleteBitmap hbitmap:0x45f0
err:dibdrv:DIBDRV_BitBlt Failed converting source DIB to DDB
[...]
(found near the end of the log; the errors always occur, if I try to scroll.)
With the engine turned of, the scrolling works fine, but other parts of the
rm2k are extremly slow; to slow to work with it.
Is there anything I can do about this problem?

Seems to be a regression from a versions about 0.9.3x — as i can remember,
there was no such problem with old versions (but of course, there was other

Blitzkrieg game runs too fast; it renders the game unplayable. The problem
manifests itself in:
- main menu, when entering profile name (cursor blinks very fast).
- the game itself: units move in a blink of an eye, map scrolling is
instantaneous, highlight for active action icon blinks too fast, water effects
(rain, snow) are very fast etc.
Note, that due to bug #20311, it's only possible to start German or Russian

We need a way to find out about these reserved but not mounted drive letters
from mountmgr. Then winecfg can be updated track them and not clobber them (and
possibly show them in the UI).
This probably means a change to IOCTL_MOUNTMGR_QUERY_UNIX_DRIVE.

Confirming that this issues is completely unchanged in Wine 1.1.43. Steps
followed to reproduce:
1. Run install from the terminal: wine "D:\setup.exe"
2. When prompted for second disk, run "wine eject d:" (physical eject or normal
umount commands still do not work fully; disk ejects, but second disk cannot
mount)
3. After the second disk is mounted, continue install, will progress to 100%.
4. When prompted for the first disk, run "wine eject d:" again and put in the
first disk
5. After mounting, try to continue install and immediately get the "An I/O
error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad
installation media or a corrupt installation file" message with "Abort" and
"Retry" options. Retry does nothing, Abort rolls back the install.
Terminal reports the following at the moment of the I/O error:
"fixme:shell:IShellLinkA_fnGetPath (0x1859a0): WIN32_FIND_DATA is not yet
filled."

It's not mainly a driver thing, but also the question if the hardware supports
the minimum GLSL feature set. Also keep in mind that with the OSS 3d drivers
from mesa choosing GLSL is actually not such a good idea, since the compiler is
_very_ far from producing optimal code (when comparing to nvidia blob and
fglrx).
So at least the people using mesa drivers are probably interested in getting
this also fixed for the ARB path.

Interesting! Looking through the changelogs I think it was wine ver. 1.1.38
that fixed the issue (if it really is fixed).
Probably one of Henri's commits, e.g. this one:

The new version of Steam as of downloaded on 2010-apr-29 does crash the X
server.
I already tried to use winetricks allfonts, winetricks allcodecs and using
windows 2008 and windows 7 as configuration. Log of the application follows in
attachment.

screenshot - comparison between 1.1.37 & 1.1.43
This issue seems to be fixed, somewhere between 1.1.37 and 1.1.39 (i have no
compiled version for 1.1.38). In 1.1.37 characters are still overbrighted,
1.1.39 renders characters properly.
Tried with the demo and the retail version of the game, clean wine install,
in-game details were set to 'High' (including 'Pixel shaders for skin')
Fedora 12 x86
Wine-1.1.43
Nvidia 7xxx series card with driver 195.36.24

Summary: World of Warcraft: Forward walk animation not
displaying properly
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.43
Platform: x86
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: eg.galano(a)gmail.com
CC: dank(a)kegel.com
When holding down [w] to walk forward in World of Warcraft, the animation
freezes and though the character continues moving forward, it makes it look
like he is skating. Pressing [a] or [d] to begin moving in any other direction
fixes the animation until you let go of [w] and then hold it down again at
which point the animation freezes again.
