Thanks for the explanation. Don't remember where I got the idea that it used
the fixed function pipeline.

Warhammer Online wasn't using the Fixed-Function Pipeline. It was stumbling
over an issue in d3dx.
The d3dx dll queries the number of supported vertex blending matrices, and when
it gets 0, produces a vertex buffer which Wine doesn't understand, but when it
gets 2 or more, produces a vertex buffer which works fine.
See bug 8357 comment 8. If bug 8357 were solved then this bug could be taken
off Warhammer Online's AppDB page, and if this bug were solved, bug 8357 would
cease to be a problem, except on those platforms where 0 blend matrices is the
correct answer.

I've found two games that have no sound unless I set DefaultSampleRate to 44100
(from my card's native 48000) and HardwareAcceleration to Emulation. (Note for
regular users: this can be done from winecfg.) Both games seem to have one
thing in common: they use Microsoft's XACT to play sounds and music.
The names are The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom and Space Giraffe, though
I presume it's not a game-specific issue. It seems the latter is available for
download at the developer's website (might be a demo):
http://www.llamasoft.co.uk/
I am not sure if there's anything Wine can do about this, but then I don't know
enough. In any case, I think this bug is useful for people wondering why these
games have no sound.

Summary: Shin Megami Tensei Online: Imagine errors out
Product: Wine

Status: UNCONFIRMED

Shin Megami Tensei Online, as the name suggests, is an MMORPG, and a Japanese
one at that. It's one of those free-to-play types, with optional real-world
payment for certain items.
Many things work flawlessly -- installation, upgrading, and the like, but it's
when one actually tries to play that problems arise.
As you can see by the screenshot, a few moments after starting the game, a
message box pops up; clicking OK shuts down the program. Although the boxes
visible in the screenshot are rather less than enlightening, I was able to grab
the actual error message through an error log created by the program:
(1.163)例外エラーが発生しました(10009)[19,81,14]。真・女神転生Imagineを終了します。
...or, in English, "(1.163) An exception error has occurred (10009)[19,81,14] -
Imagine's Shin Megami Tensei Online will now close -"
Oddly, running the program on a computer that's under a heavy load (by, say,
using a 'noisy' WINEDEBUG setting) lets one actually get in-game... but the
error still eventually occurs, but with different numbers after the 10009.
Also odd is that turning off Vertex Shader Support in winecfg stops the error
from happening altogether. However, this disables 3D graphics, which makes the
game a little hard to play. ;)
(A warning for those who want to duplicate the error: it requires the
downloading of a couple of gigs of data, first to install, and then to update;
you'll also need the ability to input Japanese text through an IME if you want
to get past the character creation screen. The error still happens in the
latter case, however.)

The above patches DO NOT work with Wine 1.3.0 or higher. Also, I have been
instructed by AJ to let this lie for a little while and come back to it. The
code is NOT correct to fix the problem. Mr. Smith has a .plan to implement a
lot of the functionality within Richedit.
