In several games the mouse cursor is surrounded by a black, solid rectangle on
my system.
I can't show you a picture of the problem, because the mouse pointer doesn't
show up on the screenshots.
Nothing relevant in the terminal.
The demo for Port Royale added to url. After installation place a native
msvcp60.dll in the game directory. The mouse cursor with the black box around
it appears in the menu.

Summary: Morrowind: trying to configure controls results in
freeze (reboot necessary)
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.17
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: sick_soul(a)yahoo.it
Steps to reproduce:
* launch Morrowind (wine Morrowind.exe)
* select Options
* select Controls
* left-click any of the controls to change it
* a message appears instructing to 'press any key or button' to associate to
this action
* now press any key or mouse button
* the application freezes.
After the freeze it is impossible to switch to another workspace (ALT+F2,
ALT+F3,.. does not work anymore), and no other key has any effect (not even
CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, nothing at all). The mouse pointer is also frozen.
The same problem also appears ingame while attacking (left-click), and walking
at the same time, especially backwards ('S' key). After some time the player is
"stuck" walking backwards, and again no input is processed anymore. Eventually
the application freezes and a reboot again is necessary.
Tried the following with no improvement:
tried using native dinput.dll and/or dinput8.dll, quarz.dll (any combination).
tried enabling/disabling DXGrab.
tried emulating a virtual desktop 800x600
tried enabling/disabling window manager decorations/windows control
tried editing Morrowind.ini to disable the DXGrab (Background Keyboard = 1)
Configuration:
PC-x86 Pentium 4, nvidia GeForce 6600, Linux 2.6.27.19, X Server 1.4.0.90,
wine git 3d35a630c4ae65fb4ab3aaf408a09051d5067b4f.
no library overrides,
Direct3D\OffscreenRenderingMode=fbo
Direct3D\VideoMemorySize=256
If you need a WINEDEBUG log, please tell me which channels/grep patterns you
need. Tried a +relay and got an incredibly huge file (even reducing to the last
5 seconds before the freeze yields a huge file).

I noticed that an application built on Windows with Visual C++ 2005 failed to
start under Wine. Apparently that was because security update MS11-025 wasn't
installed despite I had already run "winetricks vcrun2005". It would help if
"winetricks vcrun2005" would install that security update too. See also

The solution from Comment 87 ( http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8025#c87
)
fixed my problem. Additionally I added to the winecfg that hl.exe should be
started on a windows 98 environment.
Actually I have no freezes for 5 hours playing.
But at least I have one more problem.
Sometimes the ping increases highly and I get disconnected from the server.
This comes definitely not from the server or my Internet connection because
this occurs
when I run a second PC with CS 1.6 and on the same Internet connection as well
and there is
the ping default.
I try to fix this with reducing the nice priority...

This is still an issue in wine 1.3.31 for background of bitmaps.
As a test
1) Download LTSPICEIV (this is a free application, so that anybody can test it)
2) Start the application
3) Select new schematic
4) In simulation menu select simulation control panel
A window appears with many tabs. Each tab has its own little icon. The
background of the icons should be transparent, but it is in fact black in wine.
I think I got here since a very old bug I reported got marked as a duplicate of
this one. Please either reopen this bug or let me know if I should open a new
bug.

Bug is rather old, so I have updated its title:
1) Bug is an infrastructure bug and likely not to be specific to LTSPICE/SWCAD,
new title does better reflect this fact
2) Swcad 3 is now LTSpice IV

Terminal output if the failing app
After upgrading to wine 1.3.30 (I am compiling wine myself, on Debian testing
64bit, but wine is built as 32bit), launcher of Uru [1] stopped working. It
starts up, and after clicking the first button ("login"), it is supposed to
show an avatar selection and configuration dialogue. Instead, it hangs, using
50% CPU (one of my two cores), and filling up my RAM. I killed the process
after using 1.5GB, or it would have swapped the rest of my system out and made
it unusable. Before the upgrade, Uru worked fine.
I made a bisect, with the following result:

Clicking one of the items in the menu bar without moving the cursor (so it
remains hovering above the menu bar item, not the menu itself) usually results
in garbage appearing in the status bar. Hovering over a different item in the
menu bar can make this garbage text change (to other garbage). Once in a while,
the status bar will be blank instead (which is the expected behavior).
The 64-bit build of Explorer++ doesn't seem to have this problem. It happens in
the 32-bit build on both WoW64 and plain 32-bit Wine.

If the game is started with audio hardware acceleration set to full in winecfg
instead of music there is only some weird noise playing in the background.
Setting audio to emulation works as a workaround.

Created attachment 36920
--> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=36920
terminal output
The game doesn't start on my system if anti-aliasing is enabled in the game
options.
It's not a usual crash, because no crash dialog is shown: the game quits
silently, shortly after started.
The terminal output always ends with
err:seh:setup_exception_record stack overflow 1276 bytes in thread 0009 eip

I can reproduce the problem in another game as well: A Farewell to Dragons
'crashes' in a similar way in mid-game (only when AA=enabled) when I'm pressing
the <Esc> key, which should switch between the main game and the menu screen.
Still an issue as of wine-1.3.30-145-g7a4349b.
I tracked down this problem to this commit:

Reverting 8a2b435dd354cd4eac7a7286dfb8b08c539dbab8 on current git fixed the
crash (although AA is not available).
Steps to reproduce the problem in the demo of Rome:TW:
Install...launch...Go to Options > Video settings > Show advanced options > set
the AA level (low/medium/high) > apply the changes and restart the game >> the
game won't start with AA enabled.

winealsa.drv: Don't try to control ALSA's behavior.
Now, winealsa maintains its own buffer, which is written to ALSA on the
period cycle requested by the application. We also let ALSA start when
it has enough data and stop when it runs out, recovering from the
expected underruns. This seems to be more like how ALSA expects to be
used.
