Summary: Timed events bug in Call of Cthulhu
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.20
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: monolitonegro(a)gmail.com
There's a bug in the game Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of Earth that make some
timed events executate too early in the game, making the game near unplayable,
or downright unplayable.
The earliest noticiable example is the beginning of the Chapter 2:"Attack of
the fishmen". At the beginning of this chapter, the player must avoid an angry
mob of citizens running from room to room before the enemies manage to break in
the bolted doors. While in the Windows XP the game allows plenty of time for
the player to think and act, the linux with wine allows barely enough, making
the game nearly unplayable.
Another point where this bug is noticeable is at the chapter 5, Marsh Refinery.
At midway chapter, the player must outrun a shoggot while closing doors behind
him. While this is perfectly possible in the Windows XP, it is absolutely
impossible in the linux.
Tested with: wine version 1.1.20 binaries from official repository under
GNU/Linux Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and Windows XP SP2.
Aplication: Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of Earth version 1.0
Command line: wine "C:\Arquivos de programas\Bethesda Softworks\ Call of
Cthulhu DCoTE\Engine\CoCMainWin32.exe"
How to reproduce: In a dual boot machine with both Windows XP SP2 and GNU/Linux
Hardy 8.04, install the game twice, one time in each OS. Play the game up to
the beginning of the chapter 2 in the easiest dificulty(Scout Boy). At the
beginning of chapter 2, take a wristwatch, measure the time it takes for the
enemies to break in in each of the four rooms. Compare the results from both
OS.
If that's not enough, play up until midway chapter 5(if you can), compare the
time it takes for the shoggot to outrun the player in both OS.
This video shows what the player is supposed to do in chapter 5. The event
begins at 7:10 onwards:

While attempting to start Lock On : Modern Air Combat 1.0 (the retail version),
I can see the window for a couple of seconds while something is being read from
the cd, and then the game shuts down (crashes in other words). See the log for
more information.
I've used 2 native DLL's (oleaut32.dll and msvcirt.dll) as specified in winehq,
otherwise the game doesn't start at all. I tried both Win98 and WinXP modes and
got identical results.

OK, so I am very new to this, but I am really hoping that I might be able to
throw in a little help.
I have been playing around with regedit and changing little things here and
there, each time testing Guild Wars out after running wineprefixcreate.
One things that I have noticed is that Guild Wars WILL run (at about 5 - 25
FPS) with the OffScreenRenderingMode set to fb0, but will crash out if set to
pbuffer. Is there any reason for this?
Also, I ran Gw.exe from prompt to get output for the reasoning for the crash,
and this is what I get (the last few lines that is):

Just tried again in 1.2-rc2 and same result. Back in 1.1.40 i guess i found
that the class is the filedlg class (of course), which is not implemented in

stdout/stderr from application run that crashed
This is a regression in a downloadable application. I'm sorry, but I cannot
afford the hours of time it takes to run a regression test to pinpoint the
commit that introduced the problem. (I am working on building a new computer
that should be much faster, so maybe in a few months...)
This may be related to bug #23416, in which the help window contents pane was
mostly if not entirely blank. In subsequent comments, some later versions than
1.2-rc4 brought back display of some text, but other problems remained.
Comment #17 to bug #23416 indicated a need for "overhauling how urlmon does
CreateURLMoniker or ..."
The symptoms are similar to bug #17227, introduced in 1.1.12 and fixed in
1.1.28.
The crash is very reproducible. For a simplified, repeatable test sequence, I
installed PAF5 into a fresh prefix area. I used the PAF5AllLangs.exe
installer. I selected English as the installation language. I selected to
install the "International Unicode Font". I deselected viewing the 'getting
started document'. Installation finished with no apparent problem.
When running the application, I chose to create a new file of name z9, z8, z7,
or etc. I clicked on 'cancel' on the two dialogs that followed. I clicked on
the yellow question mark in the menu bar to bring up the help viewer. In the
left-hand pane of the help window, I clicked on the first four chapter titles
in turn. When I clicked on the fourth one, a dialog appeared that said Wine
had detected a problem and needed to close. I clicked the 'close' button.

the same restoration content patches as I do.

According to http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19449 , some people have
been able to play the entire game without hassle. I do not know if they were
using the restoration patches, but this could also be a regression.

parts of the application which use Flash to display information.

Summary: Gomez Peer auto-update fails
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.23
Platform: PC
URL: http://lastmile.gomez.com/PEERInstall.exe
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Keywords: download
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: kennybobs(a)o2.co.uk
Following installation and login, the Gomez Peer attempts to update itself.
Under Windows, this completes successfully, but under Wine the application
claims "Attempt to communicate with currently running GomezPEER failed
Only one instance can be run at a time." and is unable to continue.
Watching the processes shows that the gomezpeer.exe terminates and launches
javaw.exe (JRE) which then launches gomezpeer.exe again.
No clue in the console output:
fixme:font:WineEngCreateFontInstance Untranslated charset 255
fixme:imm:ImmGetOpenStatus (0x1ae8d8): semi-stub
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x95a0bc,0x00000000), stub!
The trick to work around this is to leave all the error dialogs where they are
(don't click OK). A second gomezpeer.exe then launches, claims it is already
running and terminates. On next load, the application has been updated and
loads normally.
Same in latest git (1.1.30).

Summary: ICO parsing improvements
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: windowscodecs
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: damjan.jov(a)gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=30625)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=30625)
Sample icons
While doing some research on ICO files for another open source project, I
uncovered quite a few problems and missing features in Wine's windowscodecs
implementation:
* ICONDIRENTRY is not meant to be used for parsing the image data, only the
BITMAPINFOHEADER is used. In fact, the ICONDIRENTRY can contain total rubbish,
and Windows still parses the ICO file fine (as determined by Windows Explorer's
thumbnail). Chances are Windows only uses ICONDIRENTRY when selecting the
"best" icon for a particular screen bit depth, and further decoding is only
done via the BITMAPINFOHEADER.
* BITMAPINFOHEADER only exists for BMP images, there is also (starting with
Windows Vista) PNG instead.
* Only BITMAPINFOHEADER of size 40 bytes seems supported, neither
BITMAPV4HEADER nor the OS/2 bitmap header work in its place.
* Contrary to Microsoft's documentation, compressed bitmaps are supported. At
least BI_BITFIELDS compression works. It wouldn't surprise me if all other
compressions worked. The best way to implement ICO bitmap decoding thus seems
to be to defer to the BMP decoder.
* ICO files with right-way-up bitmaps (negative biHeight), which Wine's
windowscodecs goes to great lengths to support, seem not to work on Windows in
my limited testing.
* 16 BPP bitmaps, which Wine's windowscodecs doesn't support, are valid in ICO
files.
* The trailing AND mask is optional for 32 BPP bitmaps.
* As a special gotcha, If the bitmap is 32 BPP, and the AND mask is present,
and the alpha channel would make every pixel completely transparent, Windows
ignores the alpha channel and uses only the AND mask to determine transparency.
Real world icons exist that need this
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=609094).
* A palette of size biClrUsed can exist even for > 8 BPP, and specifies the
"optimal viewing palette". It needs to be skipped when decoding such an image.
I am attaching some sample icons that highlight some of these problems.
Most open source ICO parsers (GIMP, Imagemagick, gdk-pixbuf) suffer from many
of these problems, so test only against Windows.

The workaround for Bug 13371 is to use native qcap.dll and quartz.dll.
Up to Wine 1.1.16, the workarounds work fine. With 1.1.17 (and 1.1.18) the
workarounds fail (resulting in the same DLL Function Crash error).
While attempting a git bisect I found that the workaround still worked when
using "gcc -O0" to compile, but "gcc -O1" causes the workaround to fail.
Result of bisect with gcc -O1:

Reverting to previous commit allows the workaround to work with optimisations
on.
This is kind of a blocker to Bug 13371 as the pre-compiled .debs from the
WineHQ repository uses -O2 optimisation.
To complete the bisect, I had to move from GCC 4.3.2-1ubuntu12 to GCC 4.3.3 I
compiled myself, as the results were random (GCC bug).
Tested in latest gitwine wine-1.1.18-199-ga9c0c24 and an unhandled exception
occurs with -O1, workaround works with -O0.

When I try to install Quickbooks 2008, it supplies and tries to install .net1.1

I tried this using the regular QB2008 installer, and then I cleared out my
.wine directory and tried again using winetricks to install .Net1.1 (which
QB2008 claimed to have installed correctly), and now QB2008 installer said it
wanted to install the service pack, and failed in the same way.
So I cleared .wine again, and used winetricks to install .Net2.0, but QB2008
insists on 1.1.
So I cleared .wine, and used winetricks to install .Net1.1, and then manually
ran the dotnetSP1.exe file supplied on the QB2008 CD. It failed in the same
way.
I looked at some old bugs which seemed in the same area. In particular 11719
but that is for .net2.0 rather than 1.1sp1. There was also a bug which was
fixed in 1.1.30, but I am running 1.1.32 so that should not be a problem any
more.

As per title, version 1.70 of 1by1 MP3 player freezes when you try playing an
MP3 file. Simply drag and drop the MP3 file(s) into the player and it just
freezes.
I've tried this on 2 computers with Wine and Ubuntu, one has Wine version 1.2
and the other has Wine version 1.1.42 and 1by1 Player freezes on both. You can
get .ogg files to play with the relevant plug-in .dll file in the same folder
as 1by1 and its other files (located in "Program Files"), but 1by1 player will
freeze when you close it after playing .ogg files.
Every time 1by1 player freezes and you try closing it, you have to click "Force

This is a regression in a downloadable application. I'm sorry, but I cannot
afford the hours of time it takes to run a regression test to pinpoint the
commit that introduced the problem.
With Wine 1.2-rc4, the help window worked fine. With 1.2-rc5, in the help
window brought up by the yellow question mark, the right-hand content pane is
blank for most chapters. To duplicate, install and start PAF5, click on the
yellow question mark icon in the toolbar, then observe the right-hand panel is
blank.
The observed symptoms are very similar to a regression introduced in about
1.1.12 and fixed in 1.1.28.

So, resuming: To reproduce the error: right click on the Steam trayicon and
then try to click something ... You won't be able because the cursor is about
30pixes under the real position.

This bug was already reported in the past and assumed solved with version
0.9.43 but it's still present. Joystick hatswitch is seen by wine as 2 axis and
not as a POV, despite any modification in the registry of windows (as suggested
here http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys ). The bug can be verified using
a little windows utility "joytester" (available for download here
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Joystick-Tester.sh…
) and therefore it's not related to a specific application. My joystick is
Microsoft SideWinder Precision 2 connected via USB and the POV is correctly
detected under linux (UBUNTU 7.10) and tested with "jscalibrator". This bug
prevents from using any kind of game under wine that needs the use of an
hatswitch, especially flight simulation programs.

Similar to http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23956, (which was about text
not displaying), Verizon Media Manager needs a native GDIplus in order to
display properly. The screen has numerous areas of black where it shouldn't
be, and that is obscuring the controls and other parts of the interface.
I've tried to get a GDIplus trace log, but if I wait long enough for the
interface to come up, the file is already 500 MB in size. If that's fine,
please tell me and I'll upload it to a place of your choosing.

The linked test was run by Austin English with WINEDEBUG=+all.
The line in the test that caused the crash was probably this one, or a similar
line:
http://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git/?a=blob;f=dlls/comctl32/tests/datetim…
The test is sending DTM_SETMCCOLOR, which has lParam as a COLORREF.
SPY_DumpStructure is checking for several LVM_ messages that have a pointer in
lParam. Apparently, DTM_SETMCCOLOR has the same value as one of those other
symbols, and our message spy code can't tell the difference.
I don't think we can avoid this situation, but it shouldn't crash. SPY_DumpMem
should be able to catch page faults.

After installing gdiplus (to work around bug 21798) and mono26 and extracting
AutoWikiBrowser5010.zip to a directory outside of c:, autowikibrowser fails
with an exception (attached) on startup.
A +module log shows that it is trying to load libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.dll, which
doesn't exist.
I think we have at least two problems here:
* Mingw is finding my Linux gtk libraries and trying to use them.
* Mono on Windows normally does not use gtk at all, but it does in z: in wine.
Apparently, mono has decided I'm running GNOME because I have environment
variables GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID and DESKTOP_SESSION defined.
Unsetting these variables or moving the program into C: gets it to a later
exception, after the splash screen has started.
Maybe these should be "special" variables?

Summary: Orbit downloader runs but can't capture traffic

Orbit downloader is an app to help download videos especially over tricky
protocols like RTMP (which downloadhelper can't cope with). It runs ok in wine
but doesn't see any traffic. Steps to reproduce problem:
1) Download and install orbit downloader
2) Make sure you have internet explorer installed
3) Run Grab.exe from orbit downloader install or from the Tools menu of Orbit
Downloader
4) Open http://videolectures.net/gbr07_bunke_aqpa/ in IE and play video which
amazingly does work in wine :)
Nothing is captured by Grab. This is the same with videos from youtube for
example.
The only errors produced by Grab are
err:listview:LISTVIEW_WindowProc unknown msg 204e wp=000003e8 lp=0034c384
I am on ubuntu 7.10 with wine 0.9.58.

Summary: Extreme slowdown at some points in Vampire: The

Product: Wine
Version: CVS/GIT
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: Simetrical+wine(a)gmail.com
In an installation of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (from Steam), in
some cases the game gets very slow, a fraction of an FPS. This occurs
reproducibly whenever a TV is turned on in the game. This is repeatedly
printed on the terminal, some dozens of times, and I imagine it's relevant:
fixme:d3d_surface:fb_copy_to_texture_direct Doing a pixel by pixel copy from
the framebuffer to a texture, expect major performance issues
I haven't changed the OffscreenRenderingMode setting. In fact, the Direct3D
subdirectory in Wine doesn't even exist. So it should be using the default for
this, if that's relevant. I don't *recall* changing any registry keys at all
for this prefix.
I'm using wine-1.1.2-307-g520ab5c from git, compiled in the standard fashion,
on Ubuntu Hardy. I'm running the game with the command "padsp wine steam.exe
-applaunch 2600" from the Steam directory (padsp so that sound works with
PulseAudio). No other programs are installed in the prefix, only Steam and
Vampire. I'm using a GeForce 7950 GT with proprietary driver version
173.14.12.
I can take any debugging steps needed, but starting the game requires five to
ten minutes because I have to try repeatedly before it actually works (bug
14765).

I have run the Sage MAS 500 install in wine 1.1.6 from a clean install as well
as with different winetricks options. I have attached several different output
files from wine and have listed the installed options in the first line of each
file. I was not able to find a combination that allowed the install to finish.
Adding the winetricks allowed the install to proceed a little farther where it
freezes. The best configuration I was able to find was outputted to
wine1.1.6-winetricks4.log and used dotnet20, vb6run, vcrun6, vcrun2003,
vcrun2005, wsh56.
I am relatively new to linux. If you would like me to run further tests please
give me detailed instructions and I will do my best.

=====
Installing the game, and playing it for a couple of seconds.
This was tested on the following system:
Asus A8N-SLI-Deluxe
Amd Athlon X2 3800
1.5 GB Kingston DDR
Areca 1210 + several hd's
Nvidia 6600 GT 128 MB (compiz / beryl not enabled, using Nvidia driver 169.12 )
I first downloaded and compiled wine 0.9.60 which didn't work. Then i grabbed
the latest cvs and recompiled, didn't work either. This bug-submit covers the
CVS version.
Installed the game by mounting both iso's and -=> "wine autorun.exe" on the
first cd. When the installer asks for the next cd, change the driveletter to
your second wine mount (F:\ in my case, I HAD to use the keyboard).
The in game menu's were functioning ok (mostly).
Both gameplay and FPS were perfect. Too bad the game is only playable for a few
seconds (quits when one enters combat).
====
What does not work:
Playing the game for more than a few seconds.
I copied the installed directory to a Windows XP box
Windows XP box :
- SP2 fully patched
- DirectX 9

Plays just fine :(

Output of WINEDEBUG=+msi wine 'e:\QT\QuickTimeInstaller'
A well-meaning relative bought me a program recently which comes with an
unknown version of QuickTime. QT is critical to this program's function, so
almost the first thing it does is try to kick off the QT installer; and this
fails.
Using the native MSI DLLs doesn't work either, as these work only under Win98,
and this version of QuickTime only works with Win2K or above (you get a dialog
complaining if the version is set too low).
It appears that the installer is trying to run VBScript or something of that
nature without first installing VBScript, and I can't figure out how to install
that (I grabbed scripten.exe from MS, but it insists that it can't find
anywhere to install itself and I haven't figured out why yet). (Output from qt
installation run with DEBUG=msi attached.)
(If VBScript is supposed to be provided by the installer, which I thought it
was, what is QT doing trying to run it without checking if it's there?)

While libudev has only recently been marked API stable,
already many distros have been moving away from hal,
which has been put in maintenance mode by its upstream.
As hald is (most probably) not running on such distros,
mountmgr.sys won't work there.
Looking at what's been recently done
in xorg-server git master, it does look very complicated.
Of course, libudev is not cross-platform, but (according
to the upstream) hal barely was.

The game starts fine, select mission (any) in the menus - launch ....
In the game environment itself, the sky is rendered correctly, however all
other surrounding surfaces (walls, floor/ground...everything really) is totally
black.
You can't play a FPS title if you can't see your targets (or anything else ;).
When the game is running like this, the following line is echoed to console
continuously;
fixme:d3d7:IDirect3DDeviceImpl_7_SetClipStatus (0x1712a8)->(0x33fa2c):Stub!
Log attached represents - starting the game (intro movies skipped) ; selecting
mission ; starting the game itself (this is where you'll see the above line
repeated over and over) ; quitting the game.

Since Wine 1.2 RC6 a bug in hh.exe or hhctrl.ocx was introduced. When
displaying .chm files links do not work and graphics are not displayed. I have
tested this with 2 different .chm files.
This has been a problem for a very long time in Wine until these bugs have been
fixed. But now, someone re-introduced them.

While using Circuitmaker 2000 pro - when I duplicate a part in a schematic
editor near the bottom edge of the window this cloned part tries to "pan" down
the working area in an uncotrollable way.
The only thing to do is to stop the software and start again so one can loose
an unsaved part of the job.
So I must remember now not to clone schematic parts near the bottom edge of the
Circuitmaker's schematic editor.

Product: Wine
Version: 1.3.10
Platform: x86
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: veejunk1(a)hotmail.com
Running the "Configure Wine" utility brought up an error message window
"winemenubuilder.exe has encountered an error...".
This happened after a clean install of Wine-1.3.10 in ubuntu 10.04 from the
ppa.
No windows applications were installed - I just went to
Applications>Wine>Configure Wine to see what the defaults were and the Error
window popped up. After a while the configuration window appeared and seems to
be ok. I closed the config and error windows and tried it again. No error
message this time, the config window came up ok.
This looks like a first run issue. Perhaps the config window code expects at
least one windows app to have been installed?
This gives a bad impression of wine to a new user.

Somehow, trying and accessing a wave device sometimes manages to stop another
playing sample. Yet the second call is normally returned with
265=MCIERR_DEVICE_OPEN (mapped from 4=MMSYSERR_ALLOCATED).
To reproduce, you need audible sound.
Using my interactive MCI shell from bug #20232 comment #10, try the following
1. open long-playing-sample.wav alias a
2. open sample.wav alias b
3. play a from 0
4. play b from 0 wait
Repeat 4) playing b until a is interrupted (=you hear no more sound). If a ends
normally repeat from step 3. Within less than 30 trials, a's sound will be
interrupted on my single core Linux box, wither either ALSA or OSS, with or
without PulseAudio in Ubuntu Intrepid.
When this happens, try
5. status a mode => "playing"
6. stop a => hangs
7. ^C
It seems more likely to happen after a has finished playing once. Or whatever
Voodoo is needed.

Summary: MSI SQL string comparison operators incorrect...
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.21
Platform: PC
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: msi
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: toonces282002(a)yahoo.com
In MSI, one can run SQL commands like this:
"SELECT
`Dialog`,`Attributes`,`Control_First`,`Control_Default`,`Control_Cancel` FROM
`Dialog` WHERE `Dialog`< 'bar' OR `Dialog` > 'foo'"
Note however that the two conditions that we have placed on the name of the
dialog are technically incorrect. According to Microsoft:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa372021(VS.85).aspx
"For string values, only the = or <> operations are possible. Object value
comparisons are limited to IS NULL and IS NOT NULL."
Accordingly, Microsoft treats the above expression as 'false', whereas msi on
ReactOS is actually using a strcmp to try and evaluate whether a string is
greater or less than another:
*val = ( cond->u.expr.op == OP_EQ && ( sr == 0 ) ) ||
( cond->u.expr.op == OP_NE && ( sr != 0 ) ) ||
( cond->u.expr.op == OP_LT && ( sr < 0 ) ) ||
( cond->u.expr.op == OP_GT && ( sr > 0 ) );
My guess is that this conditional in where.c needs to be adjusted to match the
behavior on Windows.
Doing testing on ReactOS..
