The annoying error message box, stating "The operation could not be completed" can be prevented by implementing IAutoCompleteDropDown in shell32. Due to this missing interface, the Devenv GUI is not really usable at all. Because the thread once lived in this state, this variable is never touched by Wine in case the thread handle becomes invalid. GetExitCodeThread() fails but the variable still contains the last known "good" value -> STILL_ACTIVE (the app doesn't reinit it). The app still thinks the worker is alive and goes into forever loop. Now the culprit: the thread handle, delivered to caller upon returning from CreateThread() is _never_ closed by app explicitly -> CloseHandle() so GetExitCodeThread() should be successful in any case. Upon the first unload sequence all std/fd handles are teared down (including handle 0x4) - this makes the handle values available in server again. When the worker thread is created it gets the unused handle 0x4 assigned from wineserver. This is the handle which is then polled by installers GetExitCodeThread() loop. When msvcrt is loaded a second time, GetStdHandle( STD_XXX) will still deliver its original value from PEB (0x4, 0x8, 0xC). Upon second msvcrt unload, fd(3), fd(4), fd(5) are closed again but this time they close something completely different (indication are also fd close errors following), leaving the app installer in forever loop. My gcc 4.6.1 x86 host toolchain has -fstack-protector enabled by default hence Wine gets the stack canary code in the binaries. The Glibc here (Xubuntu 11.10) has stack smashing protection enabled by default. Even if Wine is built with "-fno-stack-protector" the app would still break glibc %gs TLS code. This is just a "collector" bug for apps that run into this issue. WONTFIX obviously, there is no reliable way to know when to repair/restore %gs value (and restarting faulting instruction). NOTE: Remote debugging capability is not available in Visual Studio 2005/2008 express editions (free for download). Bug 29354 (installer fails due to ProductID being set during client side "ValidateProductID" standard action -> don't set property) Bug 10601 (GAC API for managed assembly installation needs reparse point/junction API support -> force msi_install_assembly()/IAssemblyCache_InstallAssembly to succeed on failure) The installer still fails in the end but it's enough to have a "half" usable IDE/build environment (.NET Framework 3.5 and some .NET service packs get skipped due to Mono registry/fake mess while other components fail to install). You can force a "normal" shared memory mapping name by setting to WinVer to "Windows 2000" prior running the IDE. Some components don't really support running WinVer < "Windows XP" anymore hence this might break some stuff (VS2008 refuses to install with W2K mode). This is because when the tables are joined, the original tablename identifiers are dropped on the floor, resulting in a table with two 'color' and two 'flavor' columns. The VIEW_find_column() function then returns the first column found that matches the requested name. This can be traced to a deficiency in VIEW_find_column() which only uses the column names in its comparison. Further, the sql parser does not preserve the table identifier, but this is easily fixed. A patch, including test case is attached. As you walk about the game, character's and NPC's names float above their heads, like in most MMORPGs. There are some NPC's who's names are always supposed to be visible as you're walking around, but with this latest update their names only appear when you actually put the mouse cursor over them. Also, when you have a character's or NPC's name showing on the screen using the above method, as you walk around, approach the character, move around the character etc., there's a strange glitch where sections of their name become transparent. It was originally submitted more than 3 and 1/2 years ago and has been added to very sparingly over the last year. The last update was almost 5 months ago and only addressed the issue with respect to the single case of TortoiseSVN. I'm submitting this bug to hopefully breathe new life into the prospect of Wine supporting Windows apps that operate by means of Windows shell extensions more generally - that is, not just for the specific case of TortoiseSVN. Now... Having written the above, I arrive at this juncture after experimenting with the specific case of attempting to get TortoiseGit to run as an extension of WineFile, WineExplorer, or a third-party file management utility like one of these (for instance): http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/the-5-best-windows-explorer-replacements/ By the way, I was able to install and run under Wine each of the Windows Explorer alternatives covered by the above link. However, no luck getting TortoiseGit to pop up as a shell extension. Would be really cool if I could use the same Windows shell extension apps under Wine as I do under Windows.
