Hello, I've tried playing several different games using Wine, all get the same
error. I'll stick to "Sins of a Solar Empire" for this description.
The problem is when trying to load I get this error in the mentioned game:

The screen is black save cursor, and it just sits there. I'm using a 9800GT w/
260.19.06 drivers. It is configured correctly, other games run, and 3d
acceleration works.
I was using Arch x86_64 and Ubuntu 10.10, the WINE versions I believe were
1.2.1 and 1.3.7. Both received the same error. I'm using no DLL overrides.
I remember these games running perfectly fine my older OS installations, the
only thing that changed was I switched to x86_64 when I got 4GB of RAM. So for
experimentations sake I installed Ubuntu 10.10 32bit.
Everything worked perfectly. I know I'm not the only one experiencing this
problem, that error I posted was actually grabbed from the AppDB, it was posted
by someone else.

Bug #: 29666
Summary: TurboTax 2011 fails to install
Product: Wine
Version: 1.3.37
Platform: x86
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Keywords: dotnet, Installer
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: austinenglish(a)gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
Tax time, so tried Turbo Tax 2011 under wine. Installer starts up, then says
it's fixing file/registry permissions. It then attempts to install .NET 4 (so
this is may be blocked by bug 25535).
Instead, I tried mono210, which has .Net 4.0 support:
$ rm -rf ~/.wine
# It wants mfc42u.dll, and there are some vbscript fixme's followed by turbotax
output about not finding the .net directory.
$ winetricks -q mono210 vcrun6 wsh57
# attempt install
$ wine setup.exe
fails, saying:
".NET 4.0 Framework verification failed. Please repair it from the Add/Remove
Control Panel."
Potentially a mono bug, though looking at the terminal output, it's using NTFS
security features, so the bug may be in wine..
Focht, feeling lucky? :)

Summary: Dead Space 2 (Steam) activation.exe only crashes and

+seh +relay wine activation.exe (warning: 1Gb extracted)
Dead Space 2 was bought and downloaded via Steam, and is as such up-to-date as
of 2011-05-10. The system is running Kubuntu 11.04 64-bit, with Wine 1.3.19
from the ubuntu-wine ppa (plus winepulse patches). While probably not relevant,
the graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce 580 and running the proprietary
270.41.06 driver.
When starting the game it automatically runs activation.exe to activate the
game. However, the activator instantly crashes and only spawns a wine debugging
session that soars to 100% CPU and never exits. The attached log is 1Gb when
extracted, and that's only because I stopped the debugger there and hit Ctrl+C.
It would likely have grown in size until the disk was full.
The game does not get activated and cannot be played.
This may be a duplicate of bug 25853, but the description of that bug lists
executables that are not present in the Steam version.

After you sign in into you msn messenger account you can see some tabs at the
left of the contact list. If you click on this tabs they will load some flash
content and other kind of web pages. But using wine 1.1.10 the tabs doesn't
show the flash animations.
You can workaround the bug using winetricks ie6 in the wineprefix that has
installed msn messenger.

Summary: Corrupted 3d overlay graphics in Temple of Elemental
Evil.
Product: Wine

OS/Version: Linux

AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: i30817(a)gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
Some of the temple of elemental evil overlays 3d over 2D that the game uses for
"advanced" effects like flames, particles and spells are misbehaving in recent
wine versions.
I am using the fglrx driver:
Catalystâ„¢ Version 11.11
Driver Packaging Version 8.911-111025a-128237C-ATI
2D Driver Version 8.91.4
Catalystâ„¢ Control Center Version 2.13
RandR Version 1.3
OpenGL Provider Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL Renderer ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series
OpenGL Version 3.3.11251 Compatibility Profile Context
You can test it in the current version by running the game; waiting a while in
the menu: some flames in the scrolling background should appear. If the error
exists they flicker in and out of existence - they almost can't be seen - (or
the demo, i'm not sure if one exists and has a menu)
I have bisected it to:

wined3d: Don't set GL_MAP_UNSYNCHRONIZED_BIT for WINED3D_BUFFER_DISCARD
maps.
WINED3D_BUFFER_DISCARD means the (current) buffer contents are undefined
for
subsequent operations. I.e., the map doesn't have to wait for any pending
operations to finish, and can just return a new buffer with undefined
contents. GL_MAP_UNSYNCHRONIZED_BIT means the driver doesn't wait for
previous
operations to finish, and just maps a buffer that's potentially in use.
Proper
synchronization is left to the application. Note that we set both
GL_MAP_INVALIDATE_BUFFER_BIT and GL_MAP_UNSYNCHRONIZED_BIT.
GL_MAP_INVALIDATE_BUFFER_BIT corresponds to WINED3D_BUFFER_DISCARD, and
might
cause the driver to return a new buffer, but it's not required to make that
optimization.

You must be aware that "before" the effect wasn't correct either; just
"differently broken"; where instead of the flame disappearing almost completely
there are graphical artefact's - this bisect pinpoints the "graphical

wined3d: Give GL_ARB_map_buffer_range another try.
Nvidia's 270.xx.yy driver series fix the glMapBuffer alignment issues that
caused major
performance problems. If the user is using an older driver we now drop the
VBO instead of using
doublebuffered loading, which means that we fall back to the current
behavior(no dynamic VBO) as
needed. Dynamic VBOs are needed on Nvidia drivers for
GL_ARB_instanced_arrays.

Before this bisect; the flames and spell effects were ok.
After it has the graphical artifacts;
And after it (on the first bisect); it has the "flashing" 3d particles/objects.
I am i no way saying that the other artifacts are better than the "flashing"
(they're not), only that it's not completely fixed yet.
