Bug #: 30235
Summary: xinput2: erratic mouse movement
Product: Wine
Version: 1.4
Platform: x86
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: sa(a)whiz.se
Classification: Unclassified
In many games, such as Bioshock or STALKER: Clear Sky, mouse movement in-game
is very erratic, to the point of being completely broken. The slightest mouse
movement causes the view to jump around.
This is only the case when Wine is using Xinput2, when compiled with
--without-xinput2 it's working fine (Well, with the usual limitations of
course).
As far as I can tell, this isn't a regression in Wine, but seems to have
happened as a result of some X upgrade.
I'm guessing that XI2 is broken on my system, but I'm not sure how to track
this down. I'm using Xorg 1.12.0, evdev 2.7.0, libxi 1.5.99.2.

Sadly, I don't. But if someone does, wine's goal is to document the Windows
API, so yes it should be supported. The only exception to that is code in wine
which is no longer being worked on. I think Win95/98 and DOS are the only ones
that have been deprecated so far.

Summary: Piping wine in a shell makes it run slower.

Sometimes, it can be useful to run wine through pipes to catch debug logfiles.
For exemple, we might want to run something like wine 2>&1 | tee -a logfile.log
to get stdout and stderr into a logfile
The problem is that if wine is run like this, it takes 4 seconds to exit. The
problems does not appear to be important, but sometimes (bash scripts, POL,
winetricks for example), we need to run wine several times and we want to log
everything. This problem really slows down the process.
The problem is really simple to reproduce : in a clean wineprefix, run the two
following commands:
time wine wineconsole 2>&1 | cat
# real 0m4.912s
time wine wineconsole 2>&1 | grep Usage
# real 0m4.006s
time wine wineconsole 2>&1
# real 0m0.865s
For the first commands (the slow ones), we can see that wineconsole takes time
to exit without knowing why.
This problem does not appear if stdin and stdout are separated:
time wine wineconsole | cat
# real 0m0.836s
time wine wineconsole > >(cat) 2> >(cat)
# real 0m0.774s

Created an attachment (id=32787)

Terminal log after running bzone.exe
When installed from an original CD (from instructions on AppDB page), patched
to 1.4 (or even the newer 1.5Beta patch) Battlezone will play sound effects and
music from FMV, but will not access music from the original (mixed-mode) CD.
There are a few difficulties with the game, though this is one that is, as far
as I can tell from testing, different from when it is installed in Windows XP.
The game can obviously 'see' the CD as SP campaign can't be played without it
(and the videos play) but it doesn't play the background music audio tracks.
On the CD, track 1 is the data track and 2-16 are the music tracks.
I have made sure that the mixed-mode CD is the lowest letter in winecfg (i.e.
it's the D: drive) and I have tried mounting the CD as a cue/bin file and using
winecfg to show that as the D: CD drive. This doesn't make a difference. I am
using Ubuntu 10.04 and this mounts the /media/BZONE disk (and you can see the
data) and seperately shows the Audio CD.
I include an attachment of the terminal log after running 'wine bzone.exe' -
the last 8 lines are the log from when the first FMV stops and the main BZ page
comes up - it is usually then when the background audio CD music kicks in.
Many Thanks

The attached slideshow contains four such backgrounds.

Also, the same slides show no speed issue in PowerPoint 2000. So it must be the
way PowerPoint 2003 renders them that's causing trouble.
