But when I click on the Add a Chapter button and choose anyone in my list of people listed, the program completely crashes. It doesn't matter if I choose Pedigree Chart, Scrapbook, Photo Tree or any of them. They all go to a list of people that you can select from and all of the entries will crash the application after you click on one of them. Set Windows version to NT 4.0 and remove z: drive 2. Run iexplore -unregserver 3. Run the IE4 unpacker and installer Workaround: remove the fake schannel.dll from system32 (thus letting the IE4 installer add its own) or replace it with a native one. I believe on 0.9.33 it seamlessly installed, but on latest 0.9.44, running the EXE produces help output for msiexec in terminal; I had to do wine msiexec /i on the MSIs in the directories. Installation is ok, and starting the app is okay, but when I click the menu, it gives me an exception: c0000005 at address 004749B5. Fortunately there is a hint hidden in the MSDN entry for CreateFile() that explains it: --- quote --- You can get atomic append on local files by opening a file with FILE_APPEND_DATA access and _without_ FILE_WRITE_DATA access. If you do this then all writes will ignore the the current file pointer and be done at the end-of file. (Actually, I'm not sure if the current file pointer is updated to EOF at each write or not, I haven't tested that behavior.) Eg HANDLE hFile = CreateFile(TEXT("c:\\file.txt"), FILE_APPEND_DATA , FILE_SHARE_WRITE, 0, OPEN_EXISTING, FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL, 0); The append behavior is properly synchronized between multiple writes (with or without multiple handles), where the typical way I've seen this implemented (by seeking to EOF and then writing) has a race condition if multiple threads / processes are appending to the same file. I tried opening the file using Wine running Notepad and using DOSBox running Windows 3.1 running Notepad. Windows 3.1 is just a normal DOS application, so it runs fine under DOSBox. I have listed the test results at http://test.winehq.org/data/4ece5deeeffa22b66e0a5777b6f700251a0fb691/#group… as igoddard_laptop (original code) and igoddard_lap_amend (amended with a "return depth;" line). Program affected for me is Enterprise Architect. A few tracks that sound remarkably different in Wine compared to Windows are the title screen theme (BGM 000) and both version of Flying Battery Zone (BGM 009 and 010). The version length is rounded to DWORD boundary - this needs to be taken into account (crash on some assemblies). Also the CLR metadata tables offset calculation is not correct. A good crash candidate is "Microsoft.mshtml.dll", the primary interop assembly (PIA) for mshtml.dll A good source of information about PE CLR data structures is here: http://www.ntcore.com/Files/dotnetformat.htm You might also want to have a look at CFF explorer, one of the rare PE tools which support .NET/CLR metadata: http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php If you use it on assemblies with large amount of CLR metadata, like Microsoft.mshtml.dll PIA, it might take lots of time to parse all tables. It gives you all the info (metadata table offsets/RVA's) for verification of calculations. I wrote my own little test which just calls fusion's IAssemblyCache_InstallAssembly on assemblies to verify my findings/patches. I'll leave out any patch snippets to give potential patch implementor full freedom. For testing purposes you can use the "Office 2003 Update: Redistributable Primary Interop Assemblies" from Micro$oft support which is available for download (see URL). Extract and run 'msiexec -x O2003PIA.msi'. I found the source of that call in shell32/shfldr_desktop.c: return IEParseDisplayNameWithBCW(CP_ACP,lpszDisplayName,pbc,ppidl); After hacking it to return E_NOTIMPL instead, the crashes are gone. Could Wine check whether the function is available before calling it? Recipe to reproduce: 1. Add native,builtin overrides for shdocvw and mshtml 2. Install with winetricks from svn (winetricks ie3) 3. Add a new application on the applications tab - infinst2.exe - and set shell32 to disabled for this executable. 4. Run the installer, leave all settings at default, and allow it to restart at the end. 5. On the first run of IE, disable the default browser check. It will then crash from an unimplemented function. 6. Run the browser a second time and there should be no crash (just don't try to use the address bar or home button). If native wininet is used, it crashes from an unimplemented function in wintrust instead. Steps to reproduce: 1. Change the reported Windows version to Windows 95 2. Add an application-specific override for infinst2.exe -> shell32=native (otherwise the installer won't run because it detects IE4 already installed) 3. Run the installer, ignore a crash near the end (bug 28490) or use native shdocvw to avoid it 4. Run 'wine control inetcpl.cpl' 5. Add a shell32=disabled override for infinst2.exe only. 4. Run the installer, leave all settings at default, and allow it to restart at the end. 5. On the first run, disable the default browser check. It will then crash from an unimplemented function in (native) shdocvw. 6. Then, it outputs an error on startup and exits: Run-time error '445': Object doesn't support this action (At least, most of the time. I sometimes get "X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)" instead.) Native wshom.ocx (+dependency scrrun.dll) and oleaut32 works around it.
