The version length is rounded to DWORD boundary - this needs to be taken into account (crash on some assemblies). Also the CLR metadata tables offset calculation is not correct. A good crash candidate is "Microsoft.mshtml.dll", the primary interop assembly (PIA) for mshtml.dll A good source of information about PE CLR data structures is here: http://www.ntcore.com/Files/dotnetformat.htm You might also want to have a look at CFF explorer, one of the rare PE tools which support .NET/CLR metadata: http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php If you use it on assemblies with large amount of CLR metadata, like Microsoft.mshtml.dll PIA, it might take lots of time to parse all tables. It gives you all the info (metadata table offsets/RVA's) for verification of calculations. I wrote my own little test which just calls fusion's IAssemblyCache_InstallAssembly on assemblies to verify my findings/patches. I'll leave out any patch snippets to give potential patch implementor full freedom. For testing purposes you can use the "Office 2003 Update: Redistributable Primary Interop Assemblies" from Micro$oft support which is available for download (see URL). Extract and run 'msiexec -x O2003PIA.msi'. By default, it tries to use the built-in MSVCP90.dll, which is a no go because it has missing functions (already reported in bug #28215). However, the problem is when I try to force the native version to be used, wine will not load it, and it won't even give any explanation on why. Some actions that trigger the crash include using the address bar, passing a URL as a command line parameter, loading the WineHQ forum, clicking the home button... The cause is: wine: Unimplemented function shdocvw.dll.218 called at address 0x7b83b722 (thread 0009), starting debugger... I found the source of that call in shell32/shfldr_desktop.c: return IEParseDisplayNameWithBCW(CP_ACP,lpszDisplayName,pbc,ppidl); After hacking it to return E_NOTIMPL instead, the crashes are gone. Could Wine check whether the function is available before calling it? Recipe to reproduce: 1. Add native,builtin overrides for shdocvw and mshtml 2. Install with winetricks from svn (winetricks ie3) 3. Add a new application on the applications tab - infinst2.exe - and set shell32 to disabled for this executable. 4. Run the installer, leave all settings at default, and allow it to restart at the end. 5. On the first run of IE, disable the default browser check. It will then crash from an unimplemented function. 6. Run the browser a second time and there should be no crash (just don't try to use the address bar or home button). The program's messages are unreadable because the black text appears on a black background, and the rest of the interface is mostly red and black. However, it displays correctly if Xephyr is used to run the program at 8-bit color depth. Required prerequisite in jre installed (I tried with jre-6u16-windows-i586-s). P.S. Anyway one can get around by manually copying these 4 files (WindowsCodecs.dll, WindowsCodecsExt.dll, WMPhoto.dll, PhotoMetadataHandler.dll) before installtion into system32. Extract them from the hotfix installer to have version match. This seems to work around the hotfix issues/catalog problem. This type of equipment is very common now in video surveillance. The DVRs maybe operated/viewed from a SW in cellular phones, Internet Explorer with an activex loaded from the DVR and from installable SW called CMS for Windows OS. I would apreciate if someone could make it run on Wine. It installs without error , but when trying to execute the SW freezes. I can make available a DVR with cameras connected to internet to make tests. There are other packages to convert videos, play videos , install activex etc. All chinese made and with minimum documentation. I may send if needed or asked. Thanks. Someone reported this in the AppDB. I tested this with 1.2-rc5 and 1.7.24, both show the same error, so maybe Austin/James/Mat used the German Demo? I wanted to test 1.1.29 as well but it didn't compile. The plugin implements its own 'new' and 'delete' operators which do some magic with heap base/handle (shifting 16 bits right indicate they somehow care for 64K alignment). In the RtlFreeHeap() call that causes the page fault the process heap handle passed in is normalized to 0x016d0000 due to that 'magic'. I searched appdb MS Works entries and only found tests for old versions of Wine (1.5.x). No mentioning of any problems - except for the two bugs above which were outdated anyway.
