Note that a movie plays at the beginning of the game but this is not related to bug #21531. Ultima IX _also_ crashes on start due to SafeDisc CD protection but using a no-CD crack or purchasing the legal DRM-free version from gog.com removes the CD protection but leaves the separate movie playback bug in place, so I'm filing this bug. Moving the movies or deleting them allows the game to proceed but with a reduced experience. You can hear the first second of movie audio before the game crashes. I think the EXE is not loaded by the debugger at all. Fixed by ~/bin/winetricks vcrun2013 . Add an application (in my case, Subtitle Workshop) to Applications tab and uncheck the same option for this application 3.
