Bug #: 30486
Summary: Tanner L-Edit shows blank hotkey field
Product: Wine
Version: 1.4
Platform: x86
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: comctl32
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: dank(a)kegel.com
Classification: Unclassified
Tanner's L-Edit uses the msctls_hotkey32 control from comctl32
in its Setup / Application / Keyboard dialog, but under Wine,
the control is always blank. It should say 'None' (or the local equivalent)
initially. (The caret is positioned properly, though.)
'winetricks comctl32' works around the problem.
Wine's control works fine in a standalone demo.
The problem exists in many versions of the app, including the 7.12
Student Version downloadable from various sites as ledit.zip,
2972402 bytes, sha1sum f1a5825e63cee03f2cfb912cfa8d47c5a22aa684
That version requires 'winetricks mfc42' to start, and warns
about wanting 256 color mode. Using Xephyr to get 256 color mode
doesn't seem to help.

The problem can be seen in the attached video: headers on the first tab are
first displayed correctly (and are clickable), then they get overdrawn slowly
which makes them non-clickable. Usually, the second tab does not have this
problem, and some actions trigger the header buttons to be redrawn, but they
get overdrawn again at once. I tried to nail down the problem by vastly
expanding RelayExclude to the 500 topmost function calls, an excerpt of the
resulting log is also attached. No fixmes or warnings come up.

I note that Winscp (winscp.org) is able to display TortoiseSVN menus in the
local file window when running under Windows, but not when running under wine.
Here is how I invoke winscp under wine:
WINEDEBUG=fixme-all wine "c:/program files/winscp/winscp"
Background:
WinSCP is a very nice GUI front end for Subversion (svn). You can read about
it and download it here: http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/
TortoiseSVN should not be run across a network when the Icon Overlays feature
is enabled.
http://tortoisesvn.net/node/138http://tortoisesvn.net/node/267
However, TortoiseSVN's icon overlay feature is one of the program's major
assets.
I want to use Cygwin's xterm to connect to the samba server that holds the svn
checkout directory and use Wine to run TortoiseSVN locally on that server. The
user would be presented with a nice visual representation of the state of their
checked out Subversion project, and performance would be good.
On Windows, TortoiseSVN can display its icons in any file chooser window, and
in Windows Explorer. I have also found that WinSCP's explorer view will show
icons for the local machine.
I would prefer not to have to run WinSCP in order to view TortoiseSVN icons.
Perhaps a tiny Win32 program that merely shows a file dialog would be
sufficient to run in an xterm, if Wine would support whatever system calls
TortoiseSVN makes.
For me, and many other programmers and IT personnel who work in a mixed
Windows/Linux environment, Wine would be much more useful if there was a way to
run it under Wine. Might it be possible to extend winefile with whatever it
currently lacks in order to allow TortoiseSVN to run?

Installing MSYS after MinGW on windows sets things up so that the existing
MinGW install integrates with MSYS, whereby /mingw from the MSYS shell points
to the MinGW install.
First download:
wget
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/mingw/MinGW-5.1.4.exe?modtime=1209244789&b…
run MinGW-5.1.4.exe with all defaults.
Second download:
wget
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/mingw/MSYS-1.0.10.exe?modtime=1079444447&b…
run wineconsole cmd (required because Wine doesn't launch a console window like
windows does)
MSYS-1.0.10.exe
Answer the defaults to the prompted questions on the console window before the
installer finishes (it pauses there)
wine cmd /c c:\msys\1.0\msys.bat
Typing 'gcc' in the msys terminal echos "sh: gcc: command not found", whereas
on windows it says gcc.exe: no input files.
On windows within msys, `ls /mingw` lists the contents of C:\mingw, on Wine
/mingw is empty.

ColdSteelSubs transparency code (currently not in the distributed application)
This application provides a transparent clickthrough overlay to show English
translations on top of the original Japanese source.
It relies on layered windows and DwmExtendFrameIntoClientArea to handle the
transparent display.
Currently, the main UI elements show, but the game (or any other application)
does not show through. This seems to be because DwmExtendFrameIntoClientArea
is only a stub. I'm not sure if that's the only reason it's not transparent,
but it's at least one of the reasons.
The program itself uses the unity3d engine along with some native dll calls to
the relevant user32 apis to handle the transparency.
I was able to get a copy of the relevant code (but not the whole application),
of which I will attach.
Since I can't get all of the code, I've been using an unity sample application
to try to figure out some parts myself (the relevant code is here
https://github.com/pheonise/Unity3D-Desktop-Overlay/blob/master/Assets/Scri…).
This unity3d application works as expected on windows, but is not transparent
via wine (as expected). When i comment the call to
DwmExtendFrameIntoClientArea, then it its also no longer transparent on windows
as well.
It seems that if the sample application works, then I can make sure the dev
applies to the same technique to the overlay application.
Please let me know If i can provide any more information.

Currently, Wine on Linux is strongly dependent on X, and when used with the
desktop environment with new Wayland display server, Wine is forced to run
through XWayland, which so far remains a poor experience.
The whole Linux desktop is now strongly pushing the switch from X to Wayland,
and many major applications are now in the process of enabling this switch.
Is there some plan for such effort in Wine? Is it even feasible? I couldn't
find any bugs opened for it, so I'm opening one here to track this.

supposed to display a window entitled "Data: Adstudy (25v by 50c)" on startup,
but the demo fails to do that. The only window that is usually visible is a
"Welcome to STATISTICA 6" helper window. In addition, opening any STATISTICA
files yields the same result, no visible child windows.

Allow user to set WM_CLASS via his environment
Hi,
The name of the executable is currently used as the WM_CLASS set by winex11.drv
however this doesn't work reliably in cases where the executable name is the
same, e.g. I have a few windows games on my system where the executable is
simply named "game.exe", leading to one game being associated with another's
icon in GNOME's running applications panel.
I can get around this problem by using a symlink but that approach isn't ideal
- in the case I tried I also had to create a symlink for another directory
located in the directory where the exe was located.
I've enclosed a patch that allows the user to specify WINEWMCLASS in his
environment and have wine use that value as an alternative to the default
behaviour.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks

Sample program that demonstrates bug (source)
I'm using a dummy scroll (as in
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2003/07/31/54601.aspx) to update
the scrollbars in my custom Windows control when necessary. In my test program,
this happens before the window is shown for the first time, and in wine, my
error checking code triggers because the ScrollWindowEx() call fails with
ERROR. This does not happen on real Windows; it instead returns NULLREGION.
The attached program creates several configurations that attempt to reproduce
this issue under different circumstances. On wine, I get
ScrollWindowEx() before ShowWindow(nCmdShow): ERROR
ScrollWindowEx() after ShowWindow(nCmdShow) and ShowWindow(SW_HIDE): ERROR
ScrollWindowEx() after only ShowWindow(nCmdShow): SIMPLEREGION
On Windows XP 32-bit, Windows 7 32-bit, and Windows 7 64-bit, I get
ScrollWindowEx() before ShowWindow(nCmdShow): NULLREGION
ScrollWindowEx() after ShowWindow(nCmdShow) and ShowWindow(SW_HIDE): NULLREGION
ScrollWindowEx() after only ShowWindow(nCmdShow): SIMPLEREGION
I can't find anything pointing to this use of ScrollWindowEx() being wrong... I
also do not know if any other scroll functions are equally affected.
I am running wine-1.7.28 from the Wine PPA on Ubuntu GNOME 14.10.
Thanks.

Wine winhlp32 supports that, but the popups (at least for some HLP files)
appear with scrollbars even when scrollbars are not needed, i.e. when all text
would fit in the popup. The unnecessary scrollbars can obscure much of the text
if the popup is small. If you click one of the scrollbar buttons the scrollbars
disappear.
Open the attached ROMTECH.HLP in Wine winhlp32 and click on various parts to
open popups. Pics show a popup as it initially appears, and after clicking on

In Winamp's playlist window, the right-click menu should contain a "send to..."
submenu that lets the user send the selected track to the format transcoder or
the ReplayGain analysis tool, but under wine the submenu does not appear. It
did appear in the previous version of either Winamp or wine (I'm not sure) but
did not work - selecting any item from the submenu simply did nothing. There
used to be a workaround for this bug posted in wine's app database, but it got
deleted.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Install Winamp, making sure that the transcoding tool and/or the ReplayGain
analysis tool are selected.
2. In the playlist window, right-click on any track.
3. The menu should contain a "send to..." submenu, but it does not.

This is a long standing issue that occurs using the Compiz window manager.
Easy enough to trigger.
1. Open table and be seated
2. Change workspace so you can no longer see the table, and wait for the
application to alert you that its your turn.
3. Return to the workspace the table is supposed to be on and you will find it
has disappeared.
The application is definitely still running, and the table window is definitely
still active (you can here the alert sounds and cards being dealt)
When I came across this issue initially, it didn't occur when using metacity as
a window manager.

The game plays tolerably in Linux (once you figure out to click the 'X'

but if you play badly and lose, the game over dialog that pops up
is not drawn properly. I'll attach a saved game; to reproduce

x = pos.x + 150;
y = -10;
test_lvm_subitemhittest(hwnd, x, y, -1, 1, LVHT_NOWHERE, FALSE, FALSE, FALSE);
The failures read:

listview.c:3056: Test failed: Expected -1 item, got -2
listview.c:3056: Test failed: Expected flags 0x1, got 0x4
This basically says that the message returned -2 (undocumented ?) and set the
flags to LVHT_ONITEMLABEL.
Is y = -10 relative to the control client area or the parent window? How can
you be on the item label in either case? Should the above values be added as
successes to this test?

The demo is downloadable from
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/win32/Q3ADemo.exe . During a default
installation in Wine, it creates ten files in C:\users\Public\Start Menu\ and
ten Wine File windows appear. No Windows Explorer windows open when installing
under Windows XP. I see the problem with Wine 1.3.18 and 1.3.19 (I did not try
earlier versions).

A listbox widget in Wine does not react the same way to keyboard input as in
Windows.
In Windows, you can type the first characters of a word and the cursor will
jump to the first item matching *all* the characters you typed. This allows you
to drill down quickly to the item you want.
In Wine, when you start typing it only considers the *last* character you typed
when looking for a match. On listboxes where you have lots of items starting
with the same character, this can make it problematic to drill down to the
correct item.
This may be better explained with a simple example. Suppose you have a listbox
with the following items, sorted alphabetically:
* AMBER
* BLUE
* BROWN
* GREEN
* ORANGE
* RED
* YELLOW
Windows behavior:
* if you type "B", it will drill down to "BLUE"
* if you type "BR", it will drill down to "BROWN"
* if you type "BRO", it will drill down to "BROWN"
Wine behavior:
* if you type "B", it will drill down to "BLUE"
* if you type "BR", it will drill down to "RED"
* if you type "BRO", it will drill down to "ORANGE"

Here is an example:
https://source.winehq.org/patches/data/181590
Created from:
https://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2020-March/162581.html
This typically happens with replies to patches:
* In the plain text version the diff is prefixed with "> " characters so it is
not recognized as a patch.
* But in the HTML version or the email the quoting is done through HTML tags
which typically leave "+++" at the start of the line. As a result the HTML part
can look like a patch.
But it could also happen if someone sends a patch in an HTML-only email (e.g.
due to a mail client misconfiguration).
The TestBot normally ignores HTML attachments (see NewPatch() in Patches.pm).
But when patches go through the patches website the TestBot does not have
access to the raw email. Instead it gets the files prepared by the patches
website as in the first link. Such files erase the distinction between the
plain text and HTML part and so mislead the TestBot into creating a job.

Clicking out of the window and into again (getting focus again) and the

There seems to be a pattern depending on the field, some trigger the problem
each time I leave them with TAB, some never do.
After reading a lot of bug reports, I tried "virtual desktop" on/off, "allow

Fixfoto 4 (trial version here:
http://downloads.panodapter.com/fixfoto/ffsetup.exe) crashes at startup without
reaching the active state at all. No idea what is the cause or the direction of
the problem.
Fixfoto 3 always ran just fine.
This is on a fresh install of Wine 5.14 and a fresh .wine directory.

Wine builtin 'tasklist' and 'findstr' are stub apps that return exit code 0 -
regardless what was passed in (because they do nothing as of now).
This gets propagated through cmd.exe exit code to caller (GetExitCodeProcess).
cmd.exe -> 0
findstr.exe -> 0
tasklist.exe -> 0
The problem is that Windows 'findstr' uses inverted logic.
Match -> exit code = 0
No match -> exit code = 1
Wine 'findstr' always returns 0 hence the installer takes this a process list
match and complains.

--- snip ---
It shouldn't be too hard to implement a minimal string/pattern matching.
Another way is to change the default behaviour to "no match" (return 1).
I'm not sure if it breaks apps that currently depend on stub "match" behaviour.

It would be nice if wine had .desktop shortcut files for "winecfg" and "wine
uninstaller". These two are the most useful applications bundled with wine.
This way users will know about them.
Ubuntu has this by default and they are placed in the wine menu.
Also, a default icon for wine would be nice (placed in /usr/share/icons or
/usr/share/pixmaps).

Small client to reproduce the bug
Arch Linux
wine-6.0-rc1-11894-gafd7b319e56
---
# Bug description
During the development of the Wine Wayland driver we've noticed a bug that also
affects the X11 driver when using client-side decorations.
Some applications start with the wrong decoration. It's a visual-only issue, as
the application starts with focus and works nicely. But its non-client area
starts with the decoration of inactive applications (greyed out).
This is how it should start:
https://share.collabora.com/index.php/s/tZQxBEaybgwGgpi
But this is how it looks like:
https://share.collabora.com/index.php/s/bQbASjTXg8oxg3W
---
# How to reproduce
You can easily reproduce this by running notepad with the X11 driver option
"Decorated" set to "N". I wrote some small clients to debug this, and the
simple program attached reproduces the issue. TLDR: it is a program that
activates a window of a non-foreground thread and then tries to show it.
---
# What I think is going on
When we call SetActiveWindow(hwnd), hwnd does not become the foreground window,
as the application thread is not the foreground thread yet (at this point the
desktop window is the foreground window). SetActiveWindow() activates the
non-client area only if the window is the foreground window, so we have
activated the window but didn't activate its non-client area (which is correct
AFAIU).
Next we call ShowWindow(hwnd), and now the thread that owns hwnd should become
foreground and SetActiveWindow(hwnd) is called. But as hwnd is already active
it does nothing and returns, so the non-client area is draw as inactive.
---
# Possible fix
In order to fix this, we could change SetActiveWindow() behavior to the
following:
if (hwnd == current active window)
if (hwnd == NtUserGetForegroundWindow() && non-client area of hwnd not
active)
activate non-client area of hwnd
bail out
I wrote a test for this, and I could see that this fix didn't break any other
tests. I've decided to post here in order to know if the fix seems reasonable
to you.
Also, I had a question while debugging this and still couldn't figure out. I
thought that focus was a global property related to the foreground window. But
it seems that when a window is set to active the function to change the focus
to it may also be called (even when the window does not belong to the
foreground thread). So can a non-foreground window be active and have the
focus?
---
Thanks a lot!

This bug shows up with IsoBuster 3.0.
Download and run the IsoBuster installer. Run IsoBuster. Choose File->Open
Image File and load an ISO image (or I guess you could select the disc in the
DVD drive). Try to choose an image file which contains quite a few directories,
subdirectories and files.
Use the treeview on the left side to browse the directory hierarchy. If you
click on various entries, notice that after a few clicks the treeview is reset
to the all-collapsed state. That happens with both built-in and native
comctl32. There's no console output when the treeview resets.
(There's also an access violation dialog on quitting the program, but that's
probably not related.)

The FFXIV launcher has been updated and is now frozen on the splash screen.
(Just a big "Final Fantasy XIV Online" logo).
For now there is a workaround: Set Browser to 1 in FFXIV_BOOT.CFG.
This browser type isn't supposed to last forever, so this is just a temporary
workaround.

When trying to play Sengoku Rance with the latest patches (english patched
version) everything is extremly slow.
Sengoku Rance uses the Alisesoft System4.0 Ver1.3 engine.
I installed it with a clean wine prefix,googled like hell for help and tested
it on two laptops each with the newest wine version on Arch:
1.6ghz dual core with ati hd 6320 (with the ati driver from git)
2.5 ghz dual core with geforce 9300gs (with nouveau from git)
This is an old game using directx 6.
Running the game itself from the console gives no output whatsoever.
And everything after and including the main menu runs at roughly a third of the
speed.

doesn't have this bug. Please see the video for demonstration.
N.b. this is not the same as bug 51984 which was resolved.
Help is much appreciated! Below is the installation guide.
The app is a bit like kindle in so much as the engine is free but the resources
cost so there is a free download. Unlike kindle it has many advanced research
features and books link together etc. The main app is free but there are paid
features, resources and subscriptions. To use the app you need a free account
https://www.logos.com/product/194909/logos-9-basic. It uses a downloader app
which last I tried doesn't work with wine. The actual msi link is
https://downloads.logoscdn.com/LBS9/Installer/9.6.0.0024/Logos-x64.msi
Manual Install Procedure:
1 Install wine 6 or newer
2 winetricks corefonts
3 winetricks settings fontsmooth=rgb
4 winetricks dotnet48
5 winetricks settings renderer=gdi (you might need to set the reg key
manually)
6 Install the Logos.msi download but don't run it.
7 wine64 reg add "HKCU\\Software\\Wine\\AppDefaults\\LogosIndexer.exe" /v
Version /t REG_SZ /d vista /f
8 Run Logos and sign in with your free account.
There is a script which downloads a preconfigured wine bottle and sets it all
up in $USER/Logos_BibleP directory which you can then easily remove etc.
https://github.com/ferion11/LogosLinuxInstaller/releases Choose fast install
without wine AppImage.

T@X20XX can be used with wine since years. This year it apparently worked as

While Kodak EasyShare is impossible to download and use (see: bug 17294 comment

of countries on one of the steps.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Start the installer. On Language selection screen, press "Next"
2) On the next screen, accept License Agreement and press "Next"
Expected result:
On the appeared screen, there is should be a combo box "Select your country"
with a list of countries (on Windows Vista it is populated)
Actual result:
The combo box is empty, nothing in the terminal.
