So I changed the windows version in /etc/wine/wine.conf to "winxp" and ran the install again but it didnt work. I changed it to "win2k" and still didn't work. I installed QuickTime 6 and ran QTInfo.exe and it always says the OS was Windows 98 Second Edition, regardless of what I set the version to. Wine is generating windows in managed mode. Wine runs great as long as I keep Fvwm on the same virtual desktop on which I created the wine app. But when I switch Fvwm virtual desktops, wine's X window disappears. Gone, no window, no icon, not present in the Fvwm window list, X loses complete track of it. But wine and the windows app inside it keep running fine. I can still see the wine processes in the process list, and any actions I previously set the windows app to perform that have observable consequences (e.g. creating files) happen correctly. That is what prevented my app from starting. For now, I'll just stay away from tearing off toolbars. I will be posting a patch to prevent the BadMatch from occuring with the requested size is larger then the executable.
