Warcraft III crashes Wine
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.6.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: thomas.waschinski(a)swipe.de
Using ALT + TAB to switch between the game and the KDE desktop crashes Wine
(0.9.6-1). This does not happen using Warcraft III under Wine-2005-09-30.
Both tested using Gentoo Linux.
Actual version also tested under Kubuntu, using the winehq.com .deb file dated
2006-01-28. ALT + TAB simply closed the game.

What Wine version are you using? I have installed the demo (PD_Pro_3_5_Demo.exe)
and running wine (version 0.9.7) dogwaffle.exe gives:
Run-time error '13':
Type mismatch.
>From the fixme's printed the program uses the OLE richedit interface which is at
the moment basicaly not present in Wine. Somebody just started working on it and
hopefully wont run away screaming ...

One solution discussed at wine-devel list is to put "user.exe" (and of course
start.exe and/or sound.dll) in "native,builtin" order.
To solve the *.exe problems, you can follow the steps (the sound.dll solution is
described later):
a) launch winecfg (command line: winecfg)
b) click at the "Application" tab
c) click at the "Default Settings"
d) click at the "Libraries" tab
e) at the "New override for library" field, put the name of the executable
(user.exe or start.exe)
f) then click the "Add" button
g) click the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button
It worked for me.
For the sound.dll problem you *must know* the name of the executable is trying
to use it. Let's give it a fake name just to make an example: "foo.exe" needs
sound.dll
a) launch winecfg (command line: winecfg)
b) click at the "Application" tab
c) click at "Add application" button
d) add the application that needs the sound.dll (in our case: foo.exe)
e) still at the "Application" tab, click the executable you have just added
(foo.exe)
f) click at the "Libraries" tab
g) at the "New override for library" field, put the name of the dll: sound.dll
h) then click the "Add" button (obs.: that means sound.dll will be used in the
order "native, builtin" *only* for the executable - foo.exe - you have just
clicked right before in the "Application" tab). You can also change the order of
DLL's by clicking on the "Edit" button. But in this case you will want "native,
builtin" because of the sound.dll+executable problem.
i) click the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button
Hope this helps.

Summary: d3dx9_*.dll are unimplemented
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.6.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ivg2(a)cornell.edu
The d3dx9_* dlls are not implemented by wine, while they are required by many
applications to work.
For example, Battlefield 2, and Need For Speed: Most Wanted require those dlls.
Those dlls are distributed with the games, however, they are distributed through
an installer, which:
(1) does not work, and
(2) does not seem to legally permit use by people who do not own a copy of
Microsoft Windows.
Unless I am misunderstanding something, d3dx9_* will have to be implemented by
Wine. This bug could track this issue.

There's now code in cvs, which does as Vitaliy suggested. Namely, a symbolic
link is set from %USERPROFILE%/Desktop to $HOME/Desktop if this exists. Could
you please give this a try and confirm that this bug is fixed? You have to
start without a .wine directory, though, so that wineprefixcreate will create
these symlinks for you.

This is still true for 0.9.5-1 (debian) on sarge. Wine starts only for users
which are mentioned in /etc/passwd or if nscd is running. I'll attach traces
(strace -f regedit) with and without nscd.
We also found problems between wine and nscd where we needed to restart nscd
bevore using wine, but I don't know if it is related.

Please copy [System\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Print\\Printers\\
xerox_230] to [System\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Print\\Printers\\
xerox_230] with all subkeys (modify .wine/system.dat directly instead of using

Hmm, after thinking about the font problem again, I think your solution works
simply because the rendered font size is smaller, hence not triggering the
problem. When doing a real install on win32, the font size is the one in the
screenshots I posted, not in yours. This is why I'd tend to think it is more
related to bitmap cropping than pure font display.

I'll also check to see that the workaround you proposed (strange that the Arial

spec file for mfc42.dll
I have talked with Alexandre about this before, and at the time he though it
was reasonable that an LGPL implementation of MFC42.DLL be added to Wine.
Although it would be alot of work, I think it is within the scope of Wine,
since MFC42 is part of the default Windows 2000 install, and is required by
programs such as the IE6 install.
I have enclosed the spec file of the dll. If somebody wants to implement it,
they should do so without refering to any existing MFC source code, and
implement it in C.

I have noticed that MFC42.dll is not included with wine. I use the MFC42.dll
from Windows 98 SE. I placed it in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system/. This works
and the below errors don't happen with it installed there, but this shouldn't
happen in the first place if wine truely aims to replace windows. I looked
through the other similar bug that was marked as WONTFIX but it was also
mentioned that MFC42.dll is freely distributable. If that is so why isn't it
included in wine. Here is the output of two programs requiring this that do not run.
err:module:import_dll Library MFC42.DLL (which is needed by L"C:\\Program

Here's the same log with msvcrt=n.
Seems, that "transgressed node" error is caused by some debug channel itself.
It hasn't been seen before I changed the debug parameters to +snoop,+relay
(With the . I haven't noticed the error, although the . has been wrong and , is
right)
I'd like to add, that in order to use printer of name consisting only from
letters and digits, I have done these logs with printer hp1160 set to default.
(The printer is still invisible in ISS when ran without those debugging
parameters that caused "transgressed node" error)

Now this is about the weirdest bug i've ever seen....
I tried reverting the patches back from 20 jan. but i couldn't find the patch that
broke it. Nevertheless i found something very weird:
In current cvs i do this:
wine Demo_Water.exe ----> i get the bug
wine Demo Water.exe 2>log ----> The app starts up fine!
In wine-0.9.5 (and probably in 0.9.6 too) i do:
wine Demo_Water.exe -----> the app starts
wine Demo_Water.exe 2>log ---->the app doesn't start but returns silently to the
console.
Inside the log i see again:
err:opengl:wglGetPixelFormatAttribivARB (0x8ac): unexpected iPixelFormat(81) vs
nFormats(19), returns FALSE
and in the end a crash.
Note: there are _no_ debugchannels enabled.
Can anyone shine a little light light on this? If someone could confirm this
behaviour it would be great as i know then it isn't a configuration bug on my
computer.

I get this same problem. Wine should either be fixed to allow separate depth levels or set it to always
use the current depth which I think is how it should work personally. This can really cause problems for
new users fiddling around and change it then realize they can't use their wine setup anymore.

Re regression testing: I have tried this. there is another issue that
effectively prevents identification of the exact patch that introduced this bug.
I could not get CVS much before 2005-05-03 to build on my system (I tried
several prior versions spaced in time and I do not still have my old 32-bit
system to try the build on). 2005-05-03 builds, but the app segfaults. Versions
from 2005-05-03 until very recently (including CXO 5.0) result in the app
segfault. However this segfault problem has now been fixed in recent CVS, so I
am not going to spend time chasing it.
However, the OLE32/Storage problem I am describing in the bug report was
introduced some time within the period where Wine would cause the app to
segfault, so it is impossible to run the app on these versions of Wine, and
determine exactly which CVS update introduced the OLE32/Storage problem.
Re: adding a test case: The problem here is that although I understand the
failure _mechanism_, it looks like a sensible failure, i.e. a call that _should_
fail. This points to a subtle bug elsewhere in the storage API that is causing
the app to misbehave. Not being a Windows apps programmer I have insufficient
knowledge of the way in which the storage API _should_ operate to be able to
spot the problem. That is why I offered to work with someone with better
knowledge of the Windows API in order to get this resolved quickly.

along with the message about being unable to initialize my 3D accelerator.
It's entirely possible that my video card doesn't support whatever it's
looking for, as it's a Radeon 7500 Mobility.
However, in talking with Tom Wickline, he made mention that Point Sprites are
known not to work currently (or, at least that test), and that (at least on
NVidia hardware), you must set the resolution to 800x600 or 1152x864, not
1024x768, as well as setting the Z-buffer depth to 24 (or 16) bit, rather than
the default 32-bit, or you will get crashes at certain points. After making
the above changes, I can complete all tests except the Point Sprites test
successfully on a Geforce 5950. I don't have access to that particular video
card right now, so I can't confirm if that is still necessary or not.

This has been tested relatively consistently since Wine 0.9 with the same
results.

Can you just revert the Direct Sound changes? I bet you will find you still
have the same problem. The recient Direct Sound changes should have no effect
on performance. You could also do a regression test to see which patch causes
the performance problems. http://winehq.org/docs/en/winedev-guide.html#AEN1344

Summary: directx sound enhancements in 0.9.6 degrade performance
in Diablo II
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.6.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-dsound
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: bafraid2b1(a)hotmail.com
The directx sound enchancements introduced in version 0.9.6 appear to be
adversely affecting the performance of Diablo II. After upgrading from 0.9.5 to
0.9.6, the sound becomes choppy and the game becomes sluggish. Previously, when
using version 0.9.5, these problems did not manifest. Reverting back to version
0.9.5 shows increased performance.
The test system is a 700Mhz PIII with 384MB of memory running Fedora Core 4.
Wine was installed from the Fedora 4 RPMS: wine-0.9.5-2.fc4.i386.rpm and
wine-0.9.6-1.fc4.i386.rpm respsectively.

I blew away my wine directory: rm -fr wine
downloaded the tarball from ftp://ftp.winehq.org/pub/wine/
untared it: tar -xzvf wine-cvsdirs-0.9.6.tar.gz
went into the wine directory: cd wine
did an update: cvs update -PAd
the whole process took about 10 minutes.
I have this in my ~/.cvsrc
---8<---
cvs -z 3
update -PAd
diff -u
---8<---
The "cvs -z 3" helps speed things up quite a bit.

Summary: Any program run through wine crashes if wine is set to
anything other than 24 bit
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ergzay(a)everyoneproductions.com
I am not sure if this problem is local to my system or not, but whenever I use
winecfg or regedit to turn off double buffering and turn on a bit setting other
than the default (24) when I open any application using wine (also winecfg,
regedit, etc) it spits this out and exits:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 1 (X_CreateWindow)
Serial number of failed request: 13
Current serial number in output stream: 14
To fix this I have to edit by hand (because winecfg and regedit no longer work)
the user.reg file and change the value back to 24 and/or set double buffering to
"Y".
I am running Fedora Core 4 on a 933 Mhz Pentium III. The video card is a RIVA
TNT2 built-in.

This bug still exists. Furthermore you cannot load saved games.
If you try, it crashes with
ERROR: You are viewing a message intended for the developers of Wizardry 8.
Please report the following information to technical support.
We apologize for this inconvenience.
Debug assertion in module C:\Projects\Wizardry 8\Local
Screens\PleaseWaitScreen.cpp line 293 failed:
Expression [ fVerify ] evaluates to false.
According to the appdb-entry, there are also other people affected by this bug.
Using native msvcrt.dll solves both the font problem and the crash.

Hi.
I'm searching the Place, where the Printername changed:
Starting with the correct Result of "GetDefaultPrinter"
(without a space) over the incorrect Parameter of "GetPrivateProfileStringW"
(with space) on the code-Path to "OpenPrinterW" (with space).
See "1)" at comment #39.
There was a typo in my last comment (between snoop and relay, i send you a mail
about this).
WINEDEBUG="+winspool+,+profile,+snoop,+relay,+seh,+msvcrt" wine ... 2>large.log
grep -C 1000 'L" ' large.log >not_so_large.log
Nothing must be stripped between "GetDefaultPrinter" (without space) and
"GetPrivateProfileStringW" (with space), so higher numbers might be needed.
I tried the grep on the logs you alredy attached to this Bug and see the
change from "printername" to L" printername".
(First is ANSI without space, second is UNICODE with space).
Windows has string-functions at several places and i hope to see the used
functions and the memory-locations from relay.
And when we have luck, it's msvcrt (that's why i suggested to test also with
native msvcrt to compare the logs).
(If it's done with OLE, then I'm lost...).
Machine is not special, as long as the Space is inserted, but please use a
Default Printer with only simple characters (a-z,A-Z,0-9) first.
