Of course, and you can use native MSI to achieve that. This doesn't close a

This is caused by ole32 not being registered. You should run "regsvr32 ole32",
although it seems like oleaut32 isn't registered either, so you should re-run
the wine.inf script.

Programs packed with UPack (http://dwing.51.net), cannot be run under Wine.
Since they run fine under Windows, it is probably a bug in Wine.
BTW, Wine already is compatible with other packers such as UPX, or NsPack, but
they do not get the compression ratio of UPack.

Just a small update: I'm stuck with tracing, I don't know how to run the trace
so that it gives info on the child process, and running the extracted file on
it's own doesn't work at all. Anyway, the protection system is element5 ESD, a
quite common protection/ license manager - I'm afraid I couldn't find any
technical in-depth information about it.

I'm not sure whether 'textbox' means the edit control or the static control, but
my patch will fix both.

You were right! Running a +process trace shows something. The executable
extracts a file to Windows\Temp, called "License Cleanup ESD.0001". That one's
a win32 executable as well, and gets executed. As soon as it's started, the
popup appears.
The license/ protection system seems to be somewhat common, it's not by
Pixologic (and therefore not part of the demo), and might be used for a few
other applications as well. I'll try to find out more!

i'm afraid there's no simple fix this now. However, if you add a simple
Sleep(5); in dlls/winmm/time.c right here:
/**************************************************************************
* timeGetTime [MMSYSTEM.607]
* timeGetTime [WINMM.@]
*/
DWORD WINAPI timeGetTime(void)
{Sleep(5);
#if defined(COMMENTOUTPRIORTODELETING)
.
.
the game runs just fine. Also make sure to add a key Managed=N under
HKCU/Software/Wine/x11drv, otherwise an annoying window will be on top of the
game. Audio set to OSS emulation. With these simple hacks you can play the game
at least quite nice for now until someone has a real fix.

So install and run IE in win98 mode, while keep your other applications in win2k
mode. I doubt they will see a difference. Wine infrastructure is quite more
unified than the whole 9x-to-NT Windows tree.
I write this not to close a bug, of course, which persists, but to make your
life easier. :)
If I am wrong, point us to those apps, which strightly depend on IE being
installed in w98 or w2k versions. Such reports can be transformed as a separate
bug reports, I believe.

| "trace+reg" gives an output
O dear, I misread this as "gives no output". :-]
I am Sorry.
Yet I think you should try running full version with several debug flag combination.
"warn+all" may give you some unusual warnings.
"+loaddll" or "+module" should show the dlls being loaded.
"+relay,+snoop,+msgbox" should give you some application activity just before it
pops up message box if you cut tail of some thousands of lines of Wine output.
"+file,+reg" should give another view of what app is doing.
"+process" will show any child processes launched (I imagine that may be a
reason of seeing no traces)
"+tid" adding this flag shows you what thread does every trace come from.
Then I'd try these:
"+hook",
"+ntdll",
"+nls"
"+server".
But it's hard to tell without having loaded dll list and without a relay trace.
Of course, it's hard to tell what is wrong at first sight. To find unusualities
you can use command 'diff -u' between the log of demo version and the full one.
Then lines belonging only to demo will be prepended with '-', while ones of
full version will get the '+'.
Also you can read some inspiring docs and find some usefull ideas on debugging
and finding how ZBrush copy protection works:

I'm quite sure. Other applications show stuff doing a +seh trace (as does the
command you posted). Also, my Wine build was configured with:
./configure --prefix=/usr --without-curses --libdir=/usr/lib32 --with-x
I already tried an unpdated kernel and switched the compiler from gcc 3.4.3 to
4.0.2, same results.

Actually, my mistake.. I should have tried it a few times, rather than just one.
Using the Transgaming control makes it work sometimes, rather than not at all....
I'm guessing the cases where it works were the cases that it used to freeze
described above. The bug described here still happens very frequently (most of
the time), so it should remail open.

Yes, I see the Transgaming one is much larger, and includes a dll from Microsoft
that you can't redistribute (msvcp60.dll).
I think I did actually have the original author's plugin working correctly, but
what probably happened is I let it get out of sync w/ Fedora - I run rawhide and
I update that fairly often... silly of me to expect that to work.
I see the current versions are not compatible with either my Firefox or my
Mozilla browser. I am forced back to Transgaming's plugin (which also includes
Gecko dlls, so it should not get broken by browser upgrades).
Closing bug, since this does fix the problem. By the way, I see the Steam focus
bug hasn't be fixed yet - shame, since a patch for this does exist, and I even
had it documented on the HL2 appdb entry for a while - maybe I'll post about
this on wine-devel again...
Next: re-try HL2 and document all the hacks that requires on APPDB
- transgaming mozilla activex Control (or make sure it's compatible w/ browser)
- document unmerged patch for Steam focus bug
- document workaround for EULA acceptance bug (defined LicenceViewed=y on
cmdline) until undocument Control Event is added for ScrollableText msi control

Hi, trying the demo, and after the intro ends (which is with current cvs either
a black screen or you could watch the intro using the hack described in bug
3653; intro takes about 2 minutes to end) it pops up a message box saying the
sound device is used by another application(which it isn't...) I tried ,using
winecfg ,about every audio configuration there is, but the error remains. Here's
the last output from running with Alsa-emulation:

Powerbuilder is a big "kitchen-sink" sort of application
with six subinstallers. To install it, you have to first
install MDAC 2.6 or higher. I installed MDAC 2.7sp1,
since I have luck installing that into an empty
wine directory. Because of bug 3636, I use a script
to unpack all the registered CABs the MDAC installer
installs but doesn't unpack; I'll include the script I use.
To reproduce this,
register for the Powerbuilder 10 trial at sybase.com,
download and unzip all five or six zipfiles,
blow away ~/.wine,
install mdac 2.7sp1,
and run the 'common installer', PB10Eval/PowerBuilder/setup.exe
There will be ten or so little warning dialog boxes
complaining about DLLs not being able to register
themselves, but that doesn't seem to be a huge issue.
The real problem seems to be that the installer
gets into a loop or locks up after about the fourth
subinstaller.
Now, I don't know how many people will need to
install PowerBuilder under Wine, but it's a nice
test of whether wine can handle a complicated
database-ish installer.

Yes, testing of demo version would be greatly appreciated, Andreas. For me it
runs nice too. The only strange thing is e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll loading, which
makes some long delays during the process final initialization stage. See my
log below.

Well, this issue needs more debugging still. I have to get my

costing too much time (no offence to you Philip). I think I'll
submit this patch as is since it already fixes the Office 97 and

I guess your Wine can be built with trace messages disabled. This can be done
by using apropriate ./configure param:
$ /usr/src/wine-cvs/wine/configure --help | grep -iC1 trace

nearly 0.5 seconds for each directory (icon) to appear (files are not a
problem). I found out, by inserting a cd the problem vanishes. So it seems wine
constantly wants to access above automoubnted dir, which fails if no cd is in
the drive. I think constanly trying to access the drive (even if I didn't want
it) isn't what wine shoould do. If wine would try this only if I explicitly
selected the cd-rom, then the problem reported wouldn't be there.

I just tried running this program with wine from cvs
built on Fedora Core 3, and it worked fine.
(I verified that the vbrun300.dll it unpacked was
good enough to run the open source vb3 app
http://neil.fraser.name/software/recog).
Can you try building wine from cvs to see if that
makes the problem go away? If so, maybe it's a problem
with how the RPMs were built (seems unlikely).
If not, then perhaps it's a problem with Wine built with gcc-4.0.

For some reason, the Transgaming Mozilla ActiveX control without native DLLs
works perfectly, while the one from www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/ doesn't work at
all. I had the same issue a few minutes ago, and it was fixed by switching to
the Transgaming ActiveX control. There seems to be a difference after all.
Now, if only HL² wouldn't always crash on startup... :-/

WINEDEBUG=+ddraw,+seh,+tid log
Lionel,
here's the log you wanted. Nice to get such an immediate response. It seems the
crash that happens at the end is in the destructor of the rendering engine, so
something earlier must have gone worng. I'm going to also test a debug build of
the game and see if the trace output gives me anything.
We have recently printed new releases of TLJ in english and french with our
partners (since the sequel is coming out next year), but I haven't got one
here. For testing, it might be easiest to download the demo, it's just 55 MB. I
see that our network people have not uploaded it to the ftp server on friday
like I asked them, but I'll put on my own webserver at
http://enno.homeunix.net/tmp/thelongestjourneydemo_english.exe
BTW, the newer versions of the game haven't got any of the copyprotection
problems.

the app pops up the mozilla activex messagebox and either answering no, or yes

Many applications needs Internet Explorer to be installed. It will be very good
if ie6setup.exe can be run with a win2k wine version and this will be a good
step for wine indeed.
Thanks you however for your work ! ;)

no wine package installed.

I own this game but was never able to get it running in Wine due to the copy

Summary: The longest journey: almost working
Product: Wine
Version: 20050930
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-ddraw
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: enno.rehling(a)gmail.com
I am a programmer at Funcom. We made an adventure game, "The longest journey"
some 6 years back. Strictly in my free time, I've been testing whether the game
would run under wine. I was told to report problems here. I have access to the
source of the game, and could make changes to the game in my free time if that
would help.
The game complains about 24 bit surfaces, something I was able to circumvent by
starting my X server in 16 bit mode. It then comes up nicely, the bink intro
video plays, and I get to the main screen where everything looks good so far
except some glitches in the transparency of a font. There are warnings galore,
and when I start the game, crashes o na null-pointer access inside it's
rendering engine (I assume because some DirectX call doesn't do waht it's
supposed to).
Almost all the error messages are DirectDraw-related. Here's a list of them,
I'll attach a full log at the end. If there's anyhthing I can do to help make
this work, please let me know. I can provide a legal copy of the game. In the
meantime I'll spend a little time trying to find out what the crash is all about.

improved patch that should solve this problem too, please give it a try.

Well, I have problems with Half-Life and Counter-Strike, while Winamp works
well except there's a bug when you pause aud unpause after some seconds the
sound "fast forwards" for the same amount of time it has been paused. (With
Waveout), with directsound I still get the same problems.

Well the games that I have tested so far is Warcraft 3, Diablo2, Starcraft (what
a blizzard! :) ) Nowadays you don't need anything special, dmix should work out
of the box. You don't need to activate it trough a ~/.asoundrc or something like
that. I'm using the intel8xo driver and this is the soundcard: 00:06.0
Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation nForce3 250Gb AC'97 Audio
Controller (rev a1)
I had problems with dmix and wine before, but that was probably cause I always
used OSS instead of ALSA without even knowing it. It seems that when you create
a new configuration, and look at winecfg, it seems that ALSA is selected. But
this isn't the case. You have to select another driver and then choose ALSA
again and click apply to activate it. If you have any other questions, feel free
to ask!

IF you change pbuffer_support to TRUE in device.c then the screen should
appear correctly.
I'll make pbuffer_support configurable from winecfg soon.

I can't figure out how to reopen this bug (immediately below this box, the only
option is "Leave as CLOSED FIXED" ... so I'm putting this comment in anyway.
This bug appears to be back in Wine 0.9... when starting Reason after the
installation process (install goes fine), Reason immediately pops up a dialog
saying "Failed to open GUI support library Application can not run"
