Summary: winecfg should let users override IE registry key easily
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-programs
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: dank(a)kegel.com
Many apps refuse to install if IE isn't at
least a certain version, even if they don't
need IE at all. They're just using it as
a quick and dirty way to check whether certain prerequisites
exist without specifying the prerequisites.
Thus recipes for installing applications often
say things like "Install MFC40, MFC42, and the VB Runtime,
and then set this cryptic registry key to fool the
app into thinking IE6 SP2 is installed"
Let's make that last step easier, and make it
a pulldown or checkbox in winecfg.

2. Getting copy to work is a little bit harder -- we need to translate the

WINEDEBUG=+relay,+snoop,+seh output, cut to 100 lines around 'seh:'
I had to gzip this as, uncompressed, the file is 17MB in size. I hope this
helps.
For the output without any WINEDEBUG statement, I get numerous errors about
x11drv (which are in bug 3622), an error about a DLL that seems unrelated, and
the message in the first comment.

Summary: range checking in numeric edit box behaves badly
Product: Wine
Version: 20050830
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-gui
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: rainer.zi(a)web.de
I found the bug with Macromedia Fireworks 2.0.2 (very old version!)
It might be reproducible in any numeric edit box with range checking and a lower
limit higher than 1.
Steps to reproduce bug:
- Open Fireworks
- create a new image
- click on the Text tool, then click anwhere on the image. The text dialog opens.
- enter some text and highlight it (important!)
- double click into the text size box (which should show something like "12") to
highlight the number
- enter "1"
- The Problem: The text size box now shows "4", its minimum value, rather than "1".
This way you cannot simply enter a number like "14". Workaround possible, e.g.
highlight the "2", enter "4".
IMHO the expected behaviour would be to allow the "1" and apply the range
checking in another place, ie. when the user leaves the box or closes the dialog.
In Fireworks, the problem does NOT occur when the text below in the dialog is
not highlited!

I can play the tutorials without problem, but when starting a champaign, a
dialog box pops up and says the error in subject. This is an i18n RT3 message
(and can be googled). RT3 then stops.
Right before showing the messagebox there is ~40
trace:d3d:IDirect3DIndexBuffer8Impl_Release (xxxxxxxx) : ReleaseRef to 0
and
trace:d3d:IDirect3DIndexBuffer8Impl_Release (0x7a72c0d0) : ReleaseRef to 0

trace:dialog:GetDialogBaseUnits base units = 9,16
If I place a breakpoint in the last vertex Release, and return 0 instead of 1,
RT3 continues correctly. If I change the implementation to allways return 0, rt3
also continues. So it seems RT3 checks the return release values.
Grepping for the 0x7fe971a0 pointer shows the list below (and a lot of
IDirect3DVertexBuffer8Impl_Unlock and Lock I have left out). I have no idea
where/how to fixing this.

IMHO "actual crash output" is output you get with WINEDEBUG unset. And to get
XX lines _B_efore seh lines (plus YY lines _A_fter it), while seeing all the
output, you may find usefull these commands:
$ wine ... 2>&1 | tee output.log # directs output both to file and terminal
$ grep -BXX -AYY ':seh:' output.log # matches seh lines
If you would like to _m_atch only the first time, add grep option "-m1". HTH.

This is the output running with WINEDEBUG=+seh set. If I run it with
WINEDEBUG=+seg,+relay,+snoop, the log ends up being about 1.2GB in size, with
the first appearance of seh: about 2/3rds of the way through. I figured a 400MB
log file probably wasnt what you were looking for... Is there some other way I
should do it?

Something is failing in sound driver. Not sure what that is. But I'm not sure
why this programm needs sound anyway. So if you disable sound completelly it
works fine! Or make sure that you have set audio "Hardware Acceleration" to
"Emulation". That also works. Only due to some bugs in winecg you need to select
other driver, different HW Acceleration. Apply changes. Then select what you have.

ChurchWindows 2005 Trial version
installs ok (see bug 3453)
but puts up a cryptic and huge dialog box

You can install the demo by running the shell script

or by satisfying the prerequisites manually
(IE6 registry key, mfc40.dll, mfc42.dll, vb6 runtime).

OK, I nailed it! Turns out that CW will install if:
* you have the registry key in comment #1
* you have mfc40.dll
* you have mfc42.dll
* you have the VB6 runtime
A script to automatically download and install CW and its prerequisites
is at http://kegel.com/wine/cw.sh.txt
Now on to file a bug against CW proper!
Hopefully Wine will come with that IE registry key preloaded soon,
and we can close this bug.

During the update it crash KDE. After that I ran the desktop icon and it did the

where to put it with the mozilla binaries.

Running VectorWorks 11.5, the program seems to get through initialization, and
then freezes. I'm running the latest Wine CVS (updated today). Commandline is
"wine VectorWorks.exe".
This is the error message I get:
wine: Unhandled exception (thread 003b), starting debugger...
wine client error:3b: read: Bad address
And then I have to kill Wine and VectorWorks with Ctrl-C.

Michael, I dealt with the issue of MapSource's strange CD-ROMs and installer in
the following way (not with Wine, actually) when my original CD-ROM cracked in
half(!) and I didn't want to take chances with the expensive replacement...
Load the contents of both CDs into one directory. Map this directory as a
virtual drive to Windows (or Wine). Install from that "drive." There will be
no prompt for disks.

Alright, so I was wrong. I wasn't running v11.5 like I thought, but rather v11.
Upgrading helped a bit-- now the main window shows up (with mad artifacting) and
then freezes, complaining about something called GSEmul.dll. I'm going to try to
find out what this is and where it should be on an actual windows install, so
for now this bug should probably be closed... unless anyone really cares about
supporting old versions of VectorWorks.

Confirming. Looks like initially there's a bug in msvcrt. I got a bit further
using native msvcrt. Then both games stop with a lot of x11drv errors (and a
BadMatch X error). However i have the feeling this might be due to my crappy ATI
drivers. Could you please try to run using native msvcrt on your computer:
copy msvcrt.dll from a native partition to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32

run

In my original bug reported, I said that I had not tried installing quicktax
from the CD - I had simply copied the files from the windows dir where it was
originally installed. Today I did try installing it from the CD into a
freshly-created .wine setup (with IE6 installed as described in the appdb).
The install went just fine (which surprised me!) but after that, running
quicktax resulted in the same behaviour as in my previous posting here - i.e.
the main panel was displayed but then the application froze. So - conclusion
- installing from CD made no difference.
Hoping someone can advise how to debug this as it now looks like a definite
maybe ...
And just for the record, this was what was written to stderr:

Well,
here are my thoughts. Gentoo 64 team made it possible to install wine through an
ebuild without any trouble. On the contrary, when installing manually winecvs I
go accross several issues, most likely related to 32 and 64 bit libs.
So, my ideas are as follows:
1) As gentoo current ebuild works, and I can handle patches, can I please be
addressed to the proper patch web site, so that I can download one by one all
patches implemented in order to make wine install the closest to winecvs?
2) I wish to post the euild which works so that perhaps you could spot what is
making gentoo ebuild work and manual install not.
This is to cut the time as I wish to install but mostly run win apps as need them
I thank you for the time you will spend in reading the ebuild as this would help
many people out there needing wine on amd64.
Also, here is a direct link to a place where a german person wrote an evuild for
winecvs bhttp://de.gentoo-wiki.com/Wine_CVS ut:
a. it does not mention amd64 so I would doubt it would work
b. I do not quite have the experience to understand it to see if it is safe,
properly done.
thank you for your important and appreciated work/help.

I tried to install mfc42.dll by downloading sysupe.exe from

The installer is a winzip self-extracting archive.

it shows a nice gui, but says the needed files
already exist. However, running with +relay,+file shows
that the CreateFile call failed for some reason:

I just ran into this.
I needed mfc40.dll to install something, so I
searched for it on Microsoft's site. They
provide it as a download to fix a Year 2000 problem:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cf3005d4-7009-4d2d…
Running it in a dos window fails with a batch file error
because start isn't found.
Pressing ^C quickly keeps the updater from wiping its
files, so you can get mfc40.dll anyway, and see
the batch file it was trying to run. And yes, it uses 'start'.

I tried setting up an entirely new .wine directory starting from empty and then
installed IE6 afresh following instructions in the
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=469
that you referenced. I then retried the quicktax 2002 exe as before and was
much encouraged that, this time, there was no crash and it actually displayed
the main quicktax panel. Wow!
But then it froze. mouse clicks on buttons did nothing, and after moving to
another window, on trying to return to quicktax, it did not re-display.
Completely gone. However the exe was still running according to ps abnd no
crash messages in the wine.log.
Any suggestions how to pursue/debug this from here?
BTW I see that, with this wine 050930 and starting with fresh .wine, there is no
longer a .wine/config. I see that is mentioned elsewhere. The new winecfg
does not cover all the things I used to be able to put in config. In
particular the windows PATH - How do I specify that? Also the new wine no
longer accepts the --debugmsg option - how do I get that debugging now?

When I try to open files in directories with russian names, I recieve the
message "Path not exists" in Notepad from wine, stupid message in Office.
Next. Sometimes some applications had crashed, when I was "browsing" directories
(WinAMP, Notepad) with english (wuthout any russian symbols in full path) names.
When I had retried enter in this directories I recieved or crash or all was
good. There is problem with file browsing on my system.
Wine didn't write anything, when I try work with russian directories, I recieve
messages only from Win-applications. Wine called winedbg and found errors, only
when win-applications crashed on some directory.
For example:
[wieker@yarilo wieker]$ cd acm/саратов/
[wieker@yarilo саратов]$ touch file1.txt
[wieker@yarilo саратов]$ cd ~
[wieker@yarilo wieker]$ wine notepad
When I open file file1.txt notepad write "Path not exist" and continue work
without crash.

Thanks for the reply and it is a handy reminder.
My main problem is simply that when I uninstall wine, BricsCAD will be
removed/uninstalled also.
I have no problem with 're-doing' everything with wine, my problem is
that I will lose all my user preferences for BricsCAD should I go this
way. ( BricsCAD is installed in /opt/bricscad but is somehow tied to the
wine installation.)
Note: BricsCAD would not install if I first did any form of
configuration with a clean install of wine ~ I needed to install wine,
install BricsCAD4Linux, install CrossOver, then re-install
BricsCAD4Linux to get both CrossOver and BricsCAD running correctly. As
by this installation on my system you can see that I at no time touched
anything to do with configuring wine.
At this point I followed the rule: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Then I used CrossOver to install PlanBee ~ that found some bug that I
have chosen to assist with.
So to recap: the wine config ain't the problem ~ it's retaining the
preferences with installed programs using wine that's the problem.
I guess I was hoping that a simple rpm -Uvh would be enough but I also
want to give the bug guys a correct report for what happens with the
latest wine package and PlanBee.
Still, the 'heads up' with winecfg is a great reminder and greatly
appreciated.

The interesting thing is that Hungarian qwerty layout works (setxkbmap
