Summary: Wine Crashes executing Steam
Product: Wine
Version: 20050830
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: wberbert(a)gmail.com
I was trying to install steam on linux to play DOD and CS, but I couldn`t due a
error.
First problem:
I installed wine using installpkg executed the installation program using wine
SteamInstall.exe, the program installed fine so I executed the program, the
program udates it self and ask to install mozilla activex program, I click yes
and nothing happens. I solved this one copying my steam installation from
windows to linux.
Second problem:
After doing that the program ask me the login and password but I can`t type the
password. I solved this clicking in forgot password and after clicking in back
button. After that the program allowed me to type the password.
Third problem:
Finally the last problem occurs after clicking in login button. The program
shows the login procedure but stops in a error that I cant work around. WIne
shows some garbage and the error: "err:ole:CoGetClassObject class
{4955dd33-b159-11d0-8fcf-00aa006bcc59} not registered". This last one I couldn't
find a solution.
Any aditional information can be asked by email.
Thanks all.

Yes, I'm afraid it is, mostly.
2548 == old Wine on a 32-bit machine
3405 == new Wine on a 64-bit machine
It would be best, now that you've pointed it out, if the data here was moved
over to 2548. Shall I do that and then we can delete this one?

Summary: WAVE_mciOpen fails to open wav file without write access
(from CD)
Product: Wine
Version: 20050725
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-multimedia
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: kwl7(a)cornell.edu
When running Zapitalism Deluxe, the wav sounds fail to play from the CD. With
WINEDEBUG=warn+all, the relevant messages (repeated for each attempt to play a
file) appear to be:
warn:file:CreateFileW Unable to create file
L"D:\\lavamind\\zap\\sound\\lavamind.wav" (status c00000a2)
warn:file:OpenFile (D:\lavamind\zap\sound\lavamind.wav): return = HFILE_ERROR
error= 19
warn:mciwave:WAVE_mciOpen can't find file=L"D:\\lavamind\\zap\\sound\\lavamind.wav"!
warn:mci:mciGetDriverData Bad uDeviceID
I believe the problem is related to mciOpen attempting to open the file with
write access because of the error 19 (defined in winerror.h as
ERROR_WRITE_PROTECT). To test this, I mounted a tmpfs over the directory
containing the audio files on the CD and copied all audio to that tmpfs and
added write permissions. The files were then correctly played in wine without
the above errors.
This bug may be an error in the Zapitalism Deluxe program (asking for write
permissions when they are not needed), but it appears that (on line 392 of
mciwave.c) WAVE_mciOpen calls mmioOpenW with MMIO_READWRITE in all cases.
Please take that as just a quick suggestion, you are the experts and have a lot
more experience than I. Just trying to be helpful. ;)

Much as the attitude in comment #5 infuriates me, after taking the time to
rebuild and test the latest CVS wine on a different machine from that which
displayed the bug, I am forced to conclude that this is a kernel bug in the
machine which first showed the bug.
I hope that in the future people who try to assist with your debugging are
treated with a little less arrogance and more respect.
I know for myself filing an accurate and complete bug report is a significant
investment of my too scarce time. The only reason I built a new wine from CVS
and discovered this bug was that I was asked by the owner of bug 2622
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2622 to re-explore a bug with an
application installer that I had managed to kludge around, and that re-testing
bug 2622 broke the working installation I had of the application, the use of
which is the main reason that I use wine to begin with.

No, quite the opposite. See bug 3010 (this has ben fixed in newer Wine
versions). I don't know how to change 20040716 so that it compiles with a never
alsa/conf.h. Nevertheless, the problem here is that this bug is not resolved
yet, not that 20040716 doesn't compile. Thats why I /* commented it out */ ;)
(However, I would like to check if this is a regression if I could compile
20040716.)

At first glance it seems to be a well known bug:Application window stays on top

no way to send the keyboard input again to the applications window. When run in

I'm running a build compiled using the code in CVS as of today.
When installing Picasa2, the license agreement text box defaults to the bottom

To reproduce:
1. wget http://dl.google.com/picasa/picasa2-current.exe
2. wine picasa2-current.exe
The scrollbar defaults to the bottom of the textbox. It defaults to the top
when I run it on a Windows machine.
Thanks!

Whoops - sorry. This was with CVS as of today rather than using the 20050830
tarball.
Also, I can only reproduce this with
http://toolbar.google.com/picasa/picasa2-setup-1884.exe and not with
http://dl.google.com/picasa/picasa2-current.exe.

Summary: Wine exits when you choose to e-mail using default e-
mail program" in Picasa 2
Product: Wine
Version: 20050830
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: clay.wood(a)gmail.com
CC: dank(a)kegel.com
I'm running 20050830 compiled from the tarball.
When installing Picasa2, the user cannot scroll through the full License Agreement.
To reproduce:
1. wget http://toolbar.google.com/picasa/picasa2-setup-1884.exe
2. wine picasa2-setup-1884.exe
3. click on scrollbar on the right of license text window and drag it to the bottom.
The scrollbar hits the bottom, but the agreement text ends in midsentence:
"The Picasa Software may communicate with Google's servers to check for
available updates to the Picasa Software, such as bug fixes, patches, enhanced
functions, missing plug-ins and new versions ("
When installing this on Windows the license agreement continues for many more
paragraphs before it reaches the end.
Thanks!

That's very strange that your whole machine froze after wine crashed. It would
be extremely helpful if you could do a regression test. If you updated recently
(which you said you did), then you wouldn't have to go very far back to find the
patch that is making wine crash. Refer to the documentation for regression testing:

Right. (Hi Duane. I still appreciate your and Walt's help with this.)
The problem seems to be that the maintainers of jack_fst didn't want to commit
the small workaround to the code tree and the existing source doesn't work
unless it is so it currently falls to the user to do this.
I'm unclear as to what state this puts things in as fars as bugs.winehq.org is
concerned. I'd truly like to see jack_fst fixed somehow. Since a good portion of
this is really Linux code that works only with Wine is there any method to have
Wine helper apps brought under Wine's umbrella so that this wasn't really an
Alsa/Jack developers issue but something that could be worked on within Wine's
sphere of influence? This might be best done as part of Wine trully supporting
Jack, and maybe that's best done later. I don't know.
As I said early on, there are literally 1000's of VSTs out there. Finding a way
to run them correctly and consistently under Wine would be a cool way to pump up
the number of Windows apps that work under Wine. If this was an 'application' I
could easily get 50-100 people to come vote for it in a few days. It would be
very popular.
Then again, I'm not a developer so I don't know the real ins and outs of this
request.
I'm also OK with completely closing the bug with a 'Will not fix' decision if
need be. If it makes no sense it makes no sense.

The problem is most likely in something jack_fst is doing. You need to find out
where the segfault is occurring, probably running it under gdb is the best way.
Then post a backtrace of the crash.

Tested very recently with the July release. It failed. It has not worked (at
least reliably) with any Wine release later than 20040505. I did regression
testing and got down to a day when lots of updates were added to Wine concerning
how memory is used. It never worked after those updates.

Wierd, looks X might have been broken by a recent security patch. Slack has
had an update now to fix that. (I use DRI CVS, not the vanilla slack packages)

x/x11-6.8.2-i486-4.tgz: Rebuilt with a modified patch for an earlier pixmap
overflow issue. The patch released by X.Org was slightly different than
the one that was circulated previously, and is an improved version. There
have been reports that the earlier patch broke WINE and possibly some
other programs.
