--- Comment #18 from Nikolay Sivov <bunglehead(a)gmail.com> ---
This doesn't work in 1.8-rc4. CreateFromFile command does not display any error
messages, but window stays blank regardless, like nothing happened. In fact
something does happen, because closing child window crashes application
probably because of clean up/refcount problem (sometimes it crashes for me in
OleNoteObjectVisible).

This needs to be cleaned up, but could be used for testing.
Is there a demo or download available that I can use to reproduce? I tried
pg1lae051209.exe from
http://panasonic.net/pcc/support/mfp/dp-1820/gdi/download.html#01-2, but that
didn't exhibit the issue for me (or does it require the hardware to reproduce)?

Every now and then some bug reporters report a Wine bug that omits basic
information such as the version of wine being used, instead it is set to
unspecified.
It could be useful to remind people who try to submit the form with the version
set to unspecified by issuing an one time alert that they should set the value
to their current wine version.
A similar thing could be done for the URL field where people could be reminded
to link to a download of the affected application.
I acknowledge that there are other bugs where 'unspecified' may make sense, but
they are not as frequent so the impact should be low.
If the length of the input in the Description box can be taken with JavaScript,
perhaps that could be checked against a commonly large length where people have
pasted logs and a warning issued also.

Thanks, obviously there was a problem with my original test because I just
installed the demo again and all files are correct. The game finds the files
correctly and reads them, I don't know why it does not display the animations
in screen.
Clearly it is not an easy problem considering the age of the bug.

Thanks for the log, it shows the files trying to be loaded. When I installed
the demo the folder animations had a lot of files with 22 bytes instead of real
video. Can you ls -l the animations folder and post here, please?
The problem with bink video player should be a separate bug to avoid mixing
problems here.
Is the demo version you tried the same from the bug Download link?

Summary: GTA: San Andreas - Ambient Sounds are too quiet (EAX)
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.2
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: directx-dsound
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ch.nolte(a)noltec.org
In GTA San Andreas which uses EAX the ambient sound (e.g. from cars etc.) is
too quiet in respect to other sounds in the game (e.g. dialog in cut-scenes).
GTASA has no option to disable EAX.
This problem can be solved for this game, when the "normal" processing mode
within dsound.dll is disabled. This can only be done via code (patch is going
to be attached). This is only a workaround which disables dsound3d completely.
I suppose that there are problems in the distance calculation algorithm in
dsound/sound3d.c and possibly in combination with apps using EAX.
BTW: Replacing eax.dll with other dlls from the web does not work. Also, please
see the comments in appdb:

I've been using DVD Profiler with Wine for a long time. With wine 1.6.2 in
Ubuntu 14.04, it now comes up with black squares instead of some of the gui
elements. This worked fine in Wine 1.4.x.
Minimizing and restoring the window forces the black squares to redraw.
This is with intel graphics and DVD Profiler 3.8.2.

Yes, I know that's a lot of work and may not be feasible. But it needs to be
considered.
Ordinary users depend on binary packages, and without real Wine packages
available, are forced to use third party versions that do provide them, whether
they want to or not. Debian never provided them reliably, Fedora stopped last
year, and this year Ubuntu has relegated Wine package-building to every few
months. That's the majority of our users.

Few months ago, i tried to get rid of ia32* and lib32* packages on my system
and use purely multiarch environment. I failed exactly on this step (after
successfully overcoming few lesser difficulties with dependencies of other
required packages). IIRC it's related to peculiar system used to
detect/configure freetype via some binary. I tried to work it around by
modifying autoconfig/config files, but it didn't work in any case. I don't
remember exact data on it, will try this weekend and post it here.

After closing the application (Heroes of the Storm, patch 13.0.37117), it will
throw up a fatal error. The application itself does, not Wine. However, prior
to this latest Heroes of the Storm patch it did not throw up this error and as
far as I can tell, it does not generate this error in Windows.
Wine: 1.7.49
I also tested it with a fresh wine prefix, to rule out any issues from dll
overrides. This did not solve the issue.
While running the application, it behaves as before. It is just when closing
the application that it throws up this error. The error message itself is just
"Fatal exception occured" with a typical Blizzard exception handler error code
but that is probably less than useful information, since it is being run in
Wine and the error it generates assumes Windows.

screenshot (comparison)
When you start a new game or load a previously saved game, the user interface
in the game is rendered correctly. After opening and closing the in-built help
screen, the user interface becomes corrupted so that only the character
portrait and the minimap can bee seen, everything else is replaced with black
rectangles (see attached screenshot).
Plain terminal output doesn't show anything.
I tried and reproduced this bug with Nvidia binary drivers 340.96, because the
game doesn't start properly with Nouveau.
Tested with the following game versions:
1.09 (demo version)
1.10 (stock version from GOG.com)
2.0.3.5 (the latest patch)
1.09 and 1.10 versions use DirectDraw renderer exclusively, newer patches allow
the player to choose between the default ddraw and opengl renderers: the issue
occurs only with ddraw.
The problem was introduced by
commit 821c2ed6a3478fadeafe7c64213b5f0af5f19d57
Author: Henri Verbeet <hverbeet(a)codeweavers.com>
Date: Fri Dec 4 11:30:15 2015 +0100
ddraw: Do not mark surfaces as lost unconditionally when setting the
cooperative level.
To reproduce the problem in the demo version:
1. Install and start the demo with OwarDemo.exe
2. In the main menu choose <Campaign>, select the U.S campaign (blue icon),
press <Esc> to skip the video. The game starts with a conversation, press
<Backspace> to skip it.
3. When you gain control over your character, press the <?> icon in the upper
menu bar to open the in-game help scene.Close the screen with the checkmark
button in the lower right.
4. You should see that the main user interface is missing decoration, buttons,
etc.

Nothing visible happens when the Buried in Time demo is started. Two
BuriedInTime.exe processes and one Unpack.exe process is created, and between
them they use 100% of 1 CPU.
Oddly, running Unpack.exe manually from the program directory seems to work
properly, and once it is run the game starts. Apparently, there's a problem
with the way the game invokes this program.

The console output has some d3dx9 fixme's, but it's not obvious to me which is

The crash is in heap code (the application has its own crash handler that
prevents a backtrace except when run in winedbg). Setting WINEDEBUG=warn+heap
changes it to a page fault from the program accessing 0xfeeefee8.

This bug applies to Microsoft Software Jukebox, a DVD-ROM containing several
games which can be unlocked after payment.
Jukebox.exe runs when you insert the disc. With Wine however, Jukebox.exe just
shows a message box:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later is required to run the Jukebox.
Retrying after doing "winetricks ie6" didn't improve things.
I got a WINEDEBUG=+all trace, and the part before the message box showed this:

Starting from wine 1.7.22, Myst III: Exile doesn't work anymore.
It starts, menu sound is playing, but nothing is displayed (black screen).
The problem seems to be introduced with the changes in ddraw as replacing
ddraw.dll.so using the one from 1.7.21 makes it work again.

Note that you should use the shortcut installed in Public\Start Menu\Programs,

Regardless, it's clear the original bug was fixed. The current problem should

taskmgr: Add buttons to switch all listed debug channels at once.
Normally one uses WINEDEBUG=+channel from process start.
This leads to big trace files.
Sometimes one needs just a trace from a certain period of an application.
For completeness there is an old wiki page to toggle all traces with F12:
http://wiki.winehq.org/Debug_trace_toggle_key
Some time ago I came across the possibility in taskmgr to switch every
debug channel given in WINEDEBUG with a single click on or off.
Having many channels in the environment leads to many clicks.
Therefore one patch here is to add buttons to taskmgr to switch all channels
on or off at once.

Using comment 124's patch, I have uploaded a video to visually demonstrate what
has been described so far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-pFDlEtnC0
I've been looking at:
- Testing Shader Model 2 and 3.
- Toggling Shaders (boolProp useShaders true/false)
- Toggling Lighting (boolProp lightingEnabled true/false)
- (boolProp simpleTerrain true/false) - This 'corrected' black floors at
times, but this didn't do much in the recording, could be due to the household.
The game's lighting might be the cause of triggering Wine's unimplemented
features (under Shader Model 2) - Disabling the game's lighting engine via the
cheat console stops outputting any further errors/fixmes. Also note that
lighting cannot be disabled from the in-game settings either, but I suppose
persistant cheat commands can be saved to "~/Documents/EA Games/The Sims
2/Config/userStartup.cheat".
This is more of a curiosity thing, I hope it's useful to visually see the
graphical problems with the game thus far should developers not have a copy of
this game.

The configure script does not find the ncurses includes and libraries, although
they are installed. This happens because the script simply checks for
ncurses.h, while it stays in ncurses/ncurses.h in my system.
Instead of doing this "raw" test, configure must use pkgconfig for checking the
presence of ncurses and getting its CFLAGS and LIBS options.
The "raw" test could be eventually left as last resort, if pkgconfig won't
provide the package.

When custom mouse pointer is enabled in the hidden object game called Alex
Hunter: Lord of the Mind, the mouse pointer has some weird behaviour:
1. when you move the mouse pointer across the screen, it sometimes jumps to a
different direction then jumps back (this is the less annoying problem).
2. when the custom mouse pointer hits the top of the screen, the mouse becomes
unresponsive for 2-3 seconds.
Plain terminal output doesn't show anything suspicious. The problem exists in
fullscreen and virtual desktop mode as well. There's no such problem when
custom mouse pointer is disabled.
It can be reproduced with the demo version available from BigFishGames (you can
start the demo directly, without launching the BFG client, with 'wine
AlexHunterLordOfTheMind.exe').
When I made the comment in https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32621#c7 , I
found that the problem was introduced by commit
841214ddb4d4dc620e6b51dfe6655b585d423edc.

This problem was already corrected probably in Wine version 1.0.1 according to
Roland Haeder. It has been around at least in 1.1.31 and 1.1.32.
When launching Sof2mp.exe, "Loading..."-text appears normally, but when
entering the menu, text flashes once, but won't go away. Menu is still working:
music is hearable, mouse movements can be heard, etc.
What has been tested:
- Using a Virtual Desktop. (Has worked earlier (1.0.1 case).)
Thought of a possible temporary workaround:
- Playing the intro movies before the menu (if possible). In single player
mode, menus do work, though disabling the movies haven't been tested yet.

Installing native msctf.dll via winetricks works around the crash.

Starting the game with
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dpnet=n" wine MC2Rel.exe -window /gosnoblade /gosusehw
it will display many
FAILED (0x8878001e - DSERR_CONTROLUNAVAIL) - SetPan(0x8fa89a0: 0)
errors. These errors occur each time a sound notification or similar (e.g.
hovering the mouse over a button in the menu or firing a weapon inside the
game) is played.
The reason is the function
IDirectSoundBufferImpl_SetPan
inside buffer.c from dsound dll.
The following code is the reason:
/* You cannot use both pan and 3D controls */
if (!(This->dsbd.dwFlags & DSBCAPS_CTRLPAN) ||
(This->dsbd.dwFlags & DSBCAPS_CTRL3D)) {
WARN("control unavailable\n");
return DSERR_CONTROLUNAVAIL;
}
Is the logic here correct?
Shouldn't "if(!A || B)" really be if(!(A || B)) ?
However the comment "You cannot use both pan and 3D controls" doesn't make any
sense in both cases, I think.
If I change it accordingly, it will work (not display these errors any more):
/* You cannot use both pan and 3D controls */
if (!((This->dsbd.dwFlags & DSBCAPS_CTRLPAN) ||
(This->dsbd.dwFlags & DSBCAPS_CTRL3D))) {
WARN("control unavailable\n");
return DSERR_CONTROLUNAVAIL;
}
Changing it according to the comment to if(A && B) doesn't work.
I hope I provided enough information. I don't really know what I did there.

Reporter: gustep12(a)yahoo.com
Thank you for working on Wine. I love the fact that Wine occasionally works
better (much faster and yet accurate rendering) for legacy Windows XP
applications than newer Windows versions!
For example, here is a legacy CAD application which is easy to install and run
in Wine, but which is very GDI intensive. As such, it is a good test for GDI
speed issues. When you open a complex CAD file, this app runs nicely in Windows
XP, but 5x or 10x slower in Windows Vista and later. Fortunately, it runs at
least the same or faster in Wine than it does in WinXP!
In fact, I guess I run this app half the time just to see how and if Wine is
working.
The application in question is PCB123 v2.1.0.7000, you can search for it online
or get the 7MB installer here. It always installs easily and works well in
Wine:
pcb123installer.exe (v2.1.0.7000, ~7MB):
https://stanford.box.com/s/69ijfwjf7qc95bq6bh2m
I purposely use this older version of PCB123 because, compared to versions that
came later, it has significantly faster display rendering performance with
complex PCB designs, such as this one, which I made:
PCB123-v2-complex-testfile.123, ~800kB:
https://stanford.box.com/s/3kmfcif91c1e909ak7jc
If you open this *.123 PCB design file and turn the mousewheel to zoom in or
out, it triggers a complete screen redraw. A screen redraw can take from one to
five seconds on sub-optimal software (Windows Vista/7/8, newest Wine), but
should take only a fraction of a second with good software (Windows XP, earlier
Wine).
If the scree re-draw takes too long, you can hide the filled copper planes of
the PCB. This speeds up redraws significantly, but the general issue (rendering
is now slower than it used to be, decreasing productivity) remains:
PCB123-v2-complex-testfile-nofill.123, ~800kB:
https://stanford.box.com/s/08zamniq0gx3imlwhi76
This software was originally released in the Windows XP years. It ran much
worse on Windows 7. It ran super-fast on Wine, regardless of hardware and/or
Linux version, I believe. Over time, I ran this software under Wine on a few
different Linux distros (Fedora, Mint, Ubuntu), and different hardware (older
Thinkpad with slow IGP, newer desktop with GTX660), the results were always
great under Linux+Wine, and much poorer under Windows 7.
Most recently, I had it running smoothly on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, probably with
Nvidia binary driver 319 and whatever Wine version was up to date.
Then, about three days ago, I let Ubuntu proceed with the upgrade to 14.04 LTS.
Initially, PCB123 worked quickly, but then another set of Ubuntu 14.04 updates
came in, probably including the Nvidia driver update v331. Somehow this
un-installed Wine, and I couldn't re-install it - same issue as described here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/449507/nvidia-libopencl1-331-has-to-be-remov…
Following the instructions on that page, I then did this:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-cuda-toolkit #Need to get 250 MB of archives; 774
MB of additional disk space will be used
sudo apt-get install ocl-icd-opencl-dev #this will remove nvidia-libopencl1-*
and nvidia-opencl-dev
sudo apt-get install wine #Need to get 121 MB; 342 MB of additional disk space
will be used.
Then I reinstalled Wine successfully, but then somehow the display performance
of PCB123 got much, much slower. I estimate the screen redraw speed is now at
least 20x to 50x slower than it used to be.
I am now trying to roll back the Nvidia drivers, the Wine versions, and so
forth, to narrow down where the problem lies. No luck so far, PCB123 remains
slow. I may even try to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS again just to see if this
fixes it. Any advice on how I can force different versions of Wine or relevant
DLLs for testing?
Any tips on how I can support fixing this issue?
Best regards,
Sebastian

In ffdshow's audio/video configuration window you can choose which decoder you
want to use for different A/V formats.
A drop-down menu should appear automatically when you select a decoder for the
desired format.
The menu doesn't appear in current Wine.
Actually, there is a way to make the menu appear: press and hold left mouse

move the mouse up or down by a couple of pixels.
Workaround: native comctl32.

Hi all,
there's a typo in the man page (at http://www.winehq.org/docs/wine and "man
wine" from wine-1.6.1):
[QUOTE]
For running CUI executables (Windows console programs), use wineconsole
instead of wine. This will display all the output in a separate
windows (this requires X11 to run). Not using wineconsole for CUI
programs
will only provide very limited console support, and your program might
not function properly.
[QUOTE]
"in a separate windows" should be "in a separate window".
