Actually a regression between wine-0.9.28 and wine-0.9.30. If only i had that
computer from that guy on #winehackers who was able to compile complete wine in
2 minutes, i could find the regression very quickly......

I don't have time for arguing on the Internet in bugtracker comments, you
calling me a kid is classic :) I'm just going to say that the logs 0.9.39 ->
0.9.40 differ, not the logs demo -> retail. You're right. These are the same and
I haven't noticed that. I won't be posting the log of the demo anymore.

wine-20050628. I'll narrow the regression down more narrowly soon

I own this game myself but didn't open a bug report for it. You wonder why?
This game never worked with wine prior the ddraw rewrite or after. The only
difference is that you could watch the intro before the rewrite.
This game is a multithreaded ddraw game. So I feared to open a bug that would
possibly ending as a duplicate.
I wanted to open a bug when multithreading d3d is supported in wine, which is
now very close indeed.

>>"but the logs aren't identical."
They _obvisual_ are. The only difference is, that the sound buffer underrounds
were fixed in 9.40 but they don't have _anything_ to do with the crash.
Don't act like a kid who thinks it just have to make enough noise that someone
pays attention to it. Wine developers usually read the ml and look at bug
reports, so don't assume they wouldn't care if you not post everyday a log.
It is nice that you'll update the bugs regularly but don't post twice or more
the same logs. It is not necessary that you post the log of demo _and_ retail
version.
If there would be a difference then you would have to open a bug for the demo
_and_ one for the retail version.

I already did. Here are more explicit instructions.
Assuming your app has an installer, please try the
following:
1. Remove the .wine directory in your home directory
2. Install your app
3. Open a shell window and run your app like this:
wine myapp.exe > log1.txt 2>&1
4. Attach log1.txt to this bug report (if it's large, compress it first)
by clicking on 'Create a New Attachment' above.
(Never paste logs in the comment window; our associate Knuckles
will fit you for concrete galoshes if you do that :-)
5. Also try native dcom as follows.
Open a shell window and paste in these lines:
wget http://kegel.com/winetricks
sh winetricks dcom98
(This will download and install dcom98, and tell Wine to use it.)
Then run your app and let us know whether it behaves better.

What is wrong with keeping the logs up to date? The reason for the crash is
identical, but the logs aren't identical. I care about this problem, am not a
programmer and I try to do everything I can to keep this problem on the radar of
the developers. You think once we get to wine 0.9.69 someone will bother looking
at an old bug report with very old debug logs? Most people will assume the
problem had been fixed along the way already.

double clicked earth2150demo.exe

Choose OpenGl (any resolution)
Success.
On wine:
downloaded earth2150.exe to ~
open terminal
$ wine earth2150.exe
Follow prompts with default options until the graphics test.
Choose OpenGl (any resolution)
Fails.
(If you then cd to ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/SSI/Earth 2150 Demo and run
$wine earth2150demo.exe the test works.)
Like I said, this works under windows. I could try executing it from the wine
desktop folder, but I highly doubt Windows would allow this to work if run from

If you try to install bricscad (windows version of course) with Wine, the first
notice from the program is that you need VBA installed. They say that the
installer can do it, but you must enter the licence, here's the problem, as soon
as you click "yes" to accept and enter the licence, the window you want to use
(to put the licence info) is unreachable because the first installation window
becomes "always on top" and it's not moveable by any means. Even if you change
desktop, it's still there.
A work around to this is to move the window before you clic the "yes", as the
licence window appears always centered, you could reach it, and use the program
as usual.
Can this be improved so the window does not get "locked" or at least not "always
on top"?

>From http://wiki.winehq.org/Bugs:
"When to report a bug
When : You should report a bug when:
*
Wine doesn't run a program the same way as Windows does (eg. crash) with
the default Wine configuration (ie. no dlls from Windows, or DllOverrides set).
* You are using the latest version of Wine
*
You tested with a clean Wine directory (default location: "~/.wine")
o Your system isn't at fault (system hangs/lockups that require a
system reboot are usually driver problems)
*
Your system has all the libraries that Wine needs (see Recommended Packages)
* You haven't modified Wine in any way (ie. you are using a prepackaged
binary or built from source by doing: "./configure ; make depend ; make")
*
You have searched bugzilla, and the problem hasn't been reported already
o
Also search for the application in the AppDB and look at the bug
links for that application, it could be already reported."
So i'm reporting it. Also if you check
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=6515 it doesn't install but it runs..

Where is Wine's counterpart to those policy pages? Also, I agree with ReactOS
in that developers can't be instantly tainted by mere exposure to non-free code.
If it were that easy to infringe, every student would be guilty of plagiarism,
and let's not even start talking about musical composition, where composers
borrow liberally from each other..

Perhaps I'm not explaining it well. The installer installs the program, but the
setup file also runs the demo. The OpenGL part of the demo fails under wine
(works under windows), but the regular direct3d works in both. I could try to
run winedebug and see where it's running the demo from, the inital setup file or
if it's calling the newly installed executable. But either way, shouldn't it
still be a valid bug, since it DOES work under windows?

Hi Misha,
Thanks for testing this. I have one more thing I'd really like you to test.
Could you remove the XFlush() in X11DRV_XRender_UpdateDrawable (in xrender.c)
and keep the XSync() in destroy_whole_window as last time. Does that still work
for you?
Thanks again.

Minimal patch to fix
Huw,
Good work. That fixed it for me. In fact all that is needed is adding that
one line. Specifically, on a clean wine git tree I apply my user32 conformance
test patch to make it XFreePixmap error and then apply just this minimal patch
and XFreePixmap error is gone.
With this patch, I get the same behavior that I can only get in one of four
other ways:
1) Reverse applying the original patch that was rebase'd to be the broken one
2) Commenting out X_FreePixmap call for tile_xpm in UpdateDrawable
3) Commenting out UpdateDrawable call in SET_DRAWABLE in ExtEscape
4) WINEDEBUG=+synchronize (seems to avoid calling old_error_handler in
error_handler).
So I am pretty sure I am testing the underlying problem here (especially b/c of
pt's #1 & #2). Just to play it safe someone else should probably test it out
too on an actual app, but I'm pretty confident this will fix it.
As for the other patches, not sure if they're needed but that's your call Huw.
This fixes the XFreePixmap error by itself.
Thanks a lot!
Misha

Summary: Wine Gecko hits an unhandled page fault (regression in
0.9.40)
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.40.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: rm.riches(a)verizon.net
This appears to be a regression from 0.9.39 to 0.9.40. Wine Gecko blows up
with an unhandled page fault. Symptoms appear similar to fixed and closed bug
report #8077. The unhandled page fault happens both when doing first install of
Wine Gecko and when attempting to use it after installation has apparently finished.
Application is PAF (Personal Ancestral File) 5. Application installation and
use appear to work fine. When clicking on the yellow question mark at the top
of the application window (the help button), the help panel comes up properly.
Wine Gecko appears to download and install, apparently successfully. Then, Wine
blows up with an unhandled page fault.
Based on comments in bug #8077, I'll try to attach the output from debug
channels mshtml, shdocvw, urlmon, htmlhelp. To the extent I can find/make time to
do it, I'd be happy to do a git regression, but when I tried to do that with bug
#8077, it failed, as described in comment #13 in bug #8077. I would need help
getting past that point before I could do a regression run.

There is a licensing issue (ROS is GPL, but Wine is LGPL)
but there's also a tainting issue. The ReactOS community
welcomes people who have disassembled large parts
of Microsoft Windows to see how it is implemented inside.
For their story, see
http://www.reactos.org/en/dev_legalreview.html and
http://www.reactos.org/wiki/index.php/TinyKRNL
They say essentially "Oh, no, we stopped breaking the rules last year",
but there is reasonable doubt about that.
What they did was to move the infringing behavior
to the TinyKRNL project, which enthusiastically allows
infringment of Windows copyright by disassembly.
Many developers work on both ReactOS and TinyKRNL,
and the two projects share some code.
While the ReactOS/TinyKRNL community thinks this is
sufficient separation to avoid legal problems,
this is debatable. As a result, the Wine community cannot
afford to accept any contributions from the ReactOS
community, for fear of IP contamination. Sad, but true.
I imagine wine might be able to accept conformance
tests from ReactOS people, but I'm not sure if any
have been submitted, and I'm not sure how Alexandre
et al feel about even that.

You can always contact the author(s) of the relevant code lines and ask them to
relicense the code under a WINE compatible license. If every author agrees you
are allowed to reuse the code. The approach is similar to a Dual License model
used by e.g. MySQL.

I think that the general public is mostly under the impression that there is two

case until now, and it's kind of sad to realize that it's only one way.

Also, if it's still happening in 0.9.40,
could you see if using native DCOM makes
the error go away? If so, then we know
where the bug in Wine lies.
To use native dcom, try

That is the way most windows programs have to be ran. Try running them from

In short - not Wine's bug, but bad assumptions on the program's part.

Handle DEFAULT_CHARSET in WineEngEnumFonts()
I think this patch is more accurate than the previous one, besides being
simpler.
There's an odd issue, however: with this patch, as well as with the previous
one, the tests complain about no SYMBOL_CHARSET enumerated for '<empty>'; Notes
R5, however, does list all my symbol fonts — and my previous tests have shown
that it calls EnumFontFamilies() without a family name in order to get the full
font list.
I'm puzzled. Could anyone test this and tell me what you get?

When moving the sound effects volume slider in the options menu, the battle
sounds that should currently be playing will become audible, until they end. So
if you keep moving the slider up and down, the battle sounds work (obviously,
the game cant be played like this).
In any case, it might indicate that sounds are in fact mostly working, maybe a
small bug prevents them from playing normally.

persists.
It may depend too on the screen resolution, maybe because you use a high
resolution the dialog appears far from the main window. Try to move the midle of
the confirmation dialog over the main window and see if the confirmation dialog
comes to top when you click it. If not, is that the problem still persists and
your case is a chance.

Hello,
I'm using a kubuntu Feisty distribution and the latest 0.9.40 package.
Today I launched winecfg and after clicking on the audio tab, a message
indicating that «arts» was not available and asked to remove it from the
registry (This is not the cause of the crash but it looks kinda strange since
I'm using KDE and arts .
After that, I checked ALSA and winecfg crashed.
I made another try deleting the .reg files and running winecfg again, this time
it crashed after unchecking the OSS box.
Note that checking or unchecking slows down my computer.
I attach the console output and a winedbg output.

test and post a new log. It simply adds a bit more tracing.
Thanks.

Kent, this bug is about the *installer*. Update to Wine 0.9.40. Remove your
.wine prefix, don't install anything native (DCOM). As Austin said, the
installer works fine; the app still crashes. If that is the case, a new bug
needs to be opened, as this bug is fixed.

I have done exxactly as Austin English 2007-07-01 15:11 was proposing, but the
error trace gives the last update error file.
So how do I get it working? The installer (InstallShield) does not work. After
manual install same problem, it does not work. Any ideas how to solve it?

Once again:
I am running Mandriva 2000, with all the latest patches and kernel 2-6-17-14, as
stated in the first and second entries to this chain.
I installed wine fresh.
I ran it for the first time as my regular user, not from root. (Yes, I also ran
it from root; I uninstalled and reinstalled to run it as the regular user.)
I got the "Floating point exception" error and wine crashed.
There is no ~/.wine directory, undoubtedly because the program never ran far
enough to create it. The "cd /.wine" line was to show that the directory does
not exist.

Did you removed ~/.wine directory? And verified that is is gone?
I still don't see what exactly are you running? If you have 'cd
/home/gary/.wine' core dumping, you have much bigger problems in your system!
But they are not related to Wine.

It appears some problems still remain. The SetProperty incorrectly handles
object index. First 3 axis are being set correctly. But if there a space it
doesn't work properly. Ex: remap X,Y,Z to Rx,Ry,Rz.

GraphicsGale opens several sub-windows for layers, palettes, etc.. They stay on
top of the app as you use it as they should. But when the app is minimized they
remainon top of your others apps and would have to be closed to disappear.
Making the sub-windows disappear when the app is minimized would be great.

Is this an error log of running the installer with DCOM installed? Looking at
your error log, yes, that is the case. We just got done saying that it doesn't
work with DCOM, and that has nothing to do with this bug report, as using native
DCOM is not supported at all. Closing this bug.
