Summary: crash running quake4 editor
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.39.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: nemoder(a)gmail.com
Wine crashes when attempting to run the map editor built into Quake4.
It can be started like this:
wine quake4.exe "+editor"
It would be great to have the editor working as it's the only part of Quake4
that was not included in the native Linux port.

idea is this is related to my hardware. Only my Logitech gamepad and my mouse
have control over what is selected in the menus. Most likely a bug in Wine's

I can confirm under wine 0.9.39. Something to add that the reporter didn't. Upon
launching setup, after the splash screen, the program changed my resolution from
1280 x 1024 to something much smaller, looked like 800 x 600 (not sure exactly,
haven't used any resolution that small in ages). This was under kubuntu feisty,
with nvidia binary drivers and with a clean .wine directory.

>Since the whole WS_EX_TRAYWINDOW style is a big fat smelly hack and we are all
>using it wouldnt it be better to have a nice proper looking 'big fat smelly
>hack' instead of gray turd?
WS_EX_TRAYWINDOW is a very special case to handle - e.g. every time we need to repaint window Xlib
XClearWindow must be used, not WINAPI RepaintWindow. To achieve this I hacked SetIcon function. This is the nicest
way I found, but it may not look nice.
Also problems with desktop and unmanaged mode. And there are other cases which I cannot ever imagine.
IMO if we want "to have a nice proper looking 'big fat smelly hack' instead of gray turd" we should reengineer
systray:
1) Check desktop mode and do not use systray in this case.
2) Add balloon messages support
3) Add ability to show/hide icons (There are applications which does not change icon, but have a set of icons. To
change icon app hides active and shows other icon. Currently all icons are visible.)
4) Implement icons for systray_adaptor window. (I want to see the app icon in KDE systray options, not generic
wine icon.)
5) Implement transparency via ParentRelative
As I see, every of these cases need to communicate with X directly. So, winex11.drv will be hacked in many places.
If we move almost all hacks to separate file, will it be acceptable?
What about full XEMBED support, it is more generic and much more accurate to develop within wine. Yes, hacks like
WS_EX_.... will be present, but in this case it will be called WS_EX_XEMBED which sounds profound [ ;-)] and more
generic.

Something that works? :(
This feature should work on all desktop environments.
It's unfair to say Gnome is bad, because it is not.
Well, maybe this is a Wine bug, maybe a Gnome bug.
Who knows? :)

I see I haven't written what's the status of this bug. My guess was correct -
CopyImage was doing w RGB656 -> RGB555 conversion. I wrote a patch not to use
CopyImage however it was decided that it's better to fix the CopyImage (even if
Windows CopyImage has also the same bug). I haven't written a patch yet but I'm
planning to do it.

disable noexec protection
Maybe you have noexec protection on one computer but not on the other? Wine
allocate 16-bit code segments with GlobalAlloc which calls HeapAlloc thus this
genereates exceptions when noexec is enabled. You could check this by trying
this patch that disables the NX protection in a brutal way (a cleaner
workaround would be to remove the NX Compatible bit from winevdm.exe. However
the proper solution is to alloc blocks in GlobalAlloc with VirtualAlloc - some
time ago I've been working on such a patch but it's not finished yet)

I took a look into the dxinput source and think that i found whats "wrong" with it.
I'm not yet very familiar with the source code but what i found could be the
reason for this behavior.
in the dlls/dinput/mouse.c at the function dinput_mouse_hook() is a check for
the mosuemovement which make sure the mouse has move before sending a event.
I've commented that if-segment out and just left the queue_event() thing in to
check if it helps.
Right now it's compiling. I'll report back after I could test it.

If you can figure out why the assertion fails you'll have your music back.
What I recall from the first patch is that there were a lot of circular
dependencies so I had to cut down on them, my guess is that the patch I wrote
exposed some deeper things wrong.
Second patch has nothing to do with what's wrong.
All you're missing is the thread.
try a +quartz with and without the first patch and see what's different.

Is it possible to let the window "Wine desktop" minimizable? That huge window is

The problem is when I open another program (uTorrent, for example) and I can't

That means that the FONT_SIGNATURE for Times New Roman has bit 30 set in its
fsCsb. (According to MSDN [1], bit 30 is “reserved by system.”) As you can see,
this is the reason for the repetition and why my patch changed which was the
repeated enumerated charset.
OTOH, as Segoe Script has no bit set beyond bit 8, it doesnÂ’t repeat anything.
However this shows that this isnÂ’t simply a matter of the order of the
enumeration, since reversing the loop didnÂ’t fix Notes.
So, it seems to me that the if(csi.ciCharset != DEFAULT_CHARSET) in the
codepage loop in WineEngEnumFonts() is missing an else. With this patch, I
donÂ’t need to reverse the loop.
Next IÂ’ll send a tarball with a full +font,+xrender log, plus the corresponding
Notes screenshot showing a faulty string.

Summary: CUI stream rediect problems with old cygwin apps
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-console
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: randallp1(a)shaw.ca
Old cygwin apps appear to not direct output to streams correctly. I'm
attempting to run an old cygwin-based compiler tool and capture it's output,
but the compiler's output always goes to console and does not redirect. The
command I'm issuing (from Linux console) is:
wine E:/sdnm.exe > capture.txt 2>&1 This example should print an error message
and capture to file. If I replace the required cyqwin1.dll with a newer one, I
get some errors messages, but the compiler still runs, and the output gets
redirected as expected. The correct cywin1.dll is stamped cygwinS2, dated
1999-9-13 20:44:35 (judging by internal stamps from binary dump). On real
Windoze, this compiler appears to print all of it's output to stderr.

The stuttering issue is due to missing GLX Direct rendering support. Reinstall
your NVIDIA drivers. Use the ENVY script
http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html if you are not confident on
how to properly set up your Xserver for GLX.

Removing "Allow window manager to control windows" may fix this issue, but then
it creates the issue that many (or all?) apps no-longer respond to keyboard
input at all.
This is with Gnome. I've not tried the Debian or Ubuntu packages as I've always
used GIT. I'll try them later.

O2K ugprade setup exits silently on shift+[any key] entry dialog
Setup.exe exits silently and abruptly if I'm at the key entry dialog and press
SHIFT plus any letter while the cursor is in its default location in the "user
name" field. It does not happen if I click in that field and then start editing
the text in it; it only happens if the first thing I do is press SHIFT and some
other key (letters are all I've tried).
Here is a short sample of what's in the attachment--none of this stuff shows up
(compare it to my previous attachment) if the first thing one does at the key
entry dialog is *not* pressing SHIFT plus some letter.

I forgot to mention:
Setting ParentRelative is an acceptable way to achieve transparecy, since KDE
developers suggest this:
"The code of those applications needs to be changed to
perform XSetWindowBackgroundPixmap( dpy, window,
ParentRelative ) on the X window that is used as the
systray icon. There's
nothing KDE can do about this, you need to ask the app
developers to support this fake transparency."

Some time ago (Jan 2007) I sent a serie of patches which implements
transparency. Since they involve more hacks than clear implementation, they
have not been applied.
Moreover, during window initialization wine change dimentions of a tray window,
so the icon slides down (this is a feature of the proposed solution). Current
systray implementation does not support basic features (such as icon hide/show.
baloon messages...) For now I think we should implement a generic XEMBED
protocol (not hacks like WS_EX_TRAYWINDOW) and only then systray protocol.
Since I am not a master in X11, so I left trying to implement clear XEMBED in
favor of simple hacks.

When there is a vista icon present in the resources of a file wine wont show
any icon in the taskbar. I suspect that wine doesn't support new 256x256 png
icons yet, but it should at least tolerate them just like every other windows
does (w98,xp).
How to reproduce:
download http://download.utorrent.com/beta/utorrent-1.7-beta-
2951.uncompressed.exe
run utorrent = empty tray icon (well gray, but lack of transparency in tray is
another bug)
Close utorrent
run PE Explorer or some other resource tool, delete icon entry number 9 (this
is Vista 256x256 png one)
run utorrent = nice tray icon

The bug is weird. Running uTorrent (latest beta )
http://download.utorrent.com/beta/utorrent-1.7-beta-2899.uncompressed.exe
with wine set to emulate XP is fine, but when you set it to Windows 98

background surfaces are not repainted and remain black.
I searched bugzilla and found some bugs with WM_ERASEBKGND (for example http://

Windows version in winecfg.

Myst Online requires a copy of winhttp.dll for its status message system. I used
a copy from my Windows XP SP2 (German). Since Myst Online version Live 6 the
status message fails to update with the message
fixme:winsock:WSAStringToAddressA (support.mystonline.com, 17, (nil),
0x7d8628dc, 0x7d8628d8) - AddressFamiliy not implemented!
0x17 = IPv6
I've talked to Andrey Turkin about the issues and he replied with:
---
Launcher do very strange things there. WSAStringToAddress cannot resolve
DNS names to IP address; launcher tries to do this, notice failure,
tries again with IPv6 (which is not supported, hence fixme; but the
function claims successful completion for some reason); then launcher
tries the same thing again with ANSI version of this function, and then
goes on with "[support.mystonline.com]" as server name, which won't work.

OOPS!
It seems that the Excel file I use to test had been corrupted after the
cxoffice-wine-excel, and therefore didn't display the Visual Basic code.
With an original copy of the .xls file, and with the original Wine OLE Dll's,
one can access the Visual Basic code.
There is still one "Fehler bei Zugriff" message when Excel starts up
(before loading a file), and spurious crashes with some X Pixmap function.
This is still with 0.9.34; I'll go ahead and try to install 0.9.39 now.

Also please upgrade to the latest Wine version - wine-0.9.39, (re)move ~/.wine

I had older headers (from 2.4.33.3), but upgrading headers and rebuilding wine
didn't fix the problem. .kkreiger crashes during LoadLibraryA("d3d9.dll")
inside the load_dll()- but reason is different. It looks like load_dll (dlls/
ntdll/loader.c) goes into a recursive loop? It calls load_builtin_dll, then
load_biltin_dll calls load_dll again, then load_dll calls load_builtin_dll and
application crashes after that. At least it's what I've learned from winedbg
session. Looks like a bug. I'll attach winedbg session log for kkreiger.
(sorry, input is invisible).

I have installed DCOM98 on my Wine 0.9.34.
Trying to use COM98.EXE:
On the installer, Wine reported an error but the DLL's were apparently
successfully replaced.
I can't use the rpcrt4=n, that leads to an error.
I run
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=ole32,oleaut32 wine 'c:\Program Files\Microsoft

and get the same error as in my original report.

x86 system. Distro (1DVD) was obtained as *.iso image from local bittorrent
resource. It seems to be a verbatim copy of slackware 11 from www.slackware.org
> Are you using custom kernel or stock?
Kernel was compiled from sources with an optimisation for i686 and experimental
features turned off. Sources were taken from slackware DVD. Kernel was compiled
without additional patches or slackbuilds. I can post entire config, if you
wish. Those applications were working with this kernel before.
> Where did you get Wine?
I've originally downloaded wine-0.9.30 from www.winehq.org and then kept
upgrading it using patches from ibiblo's ftp. Patches (as well as original
archives) are kept in original form (diff.bz2) and are unpacked using following
script:
---
#!/bin/sh
echo unpacking wine
BUILD=30
BASE=$BUILD
WINE='wine-0.9'
tar -xvvjf $WINE.$BUILD.tar.bz2 && cd $WINE
BUILD=$(($BUILD+1))
cd "$WINE.$BASE"
while [ -f ../$WINE.$BUILD.diff.bz2 ]; do
echo $WINE.$BUILD
bzcat ../$WINE.$BUILD.diff.bz2|patch -p1 &&
BUILD=$(($BUILD+1))
done
cd ..
mv $WINE.$BASE $WINE.$(($BUILD-1))
---
> If you compiled yourself, how?
One of those varians:
1) $WINEDIR/tools/wineinstall, answered "yes" and typed a root password.
2) $WINEDIR/tools/wineinstall, answered "no", switched to superuser and made a
package of it by executing "make DESTDIR=/root/distr/pkg PREFIX=/root/distr/pkg
install" and "cd /root/distr/pkg && makepkg wine-0.9.39-i686-1.tgz"
I've tried them both today with ~/.wine and previous installation removed.
Didn't help.
Right now I'm using second variant - since it allows me to use slackware
management system.
Both variants crash with 3d-related games if no "WINEDEBUG+=relay" was set
before calling wine. I've tried uninstalling wine (using both package
management and make uninstall) with removing ./wine directory and making a
"clean install" after that. Doesn't work. Problem seems to be related to
wined3d, because failure occurs at LoadLibraryA("wined3d") call. I can check
that again, if you wish.
> Does your kernel _and_ libc has full support for TLS?
I suppose that wine should print warning in this case, and it doesn't print
one. (Although it had been printing it when I was using older 2.4.33.3 kernel).

I can't confirm the issue from WinXP. Running in OpenGL I changed every video
setting I could find, including resolution and going from windowed to
fullscreen, and had no issue. Are you sure the WinXP issue isn't caused by
another problem?
The issue appears to be only evident from Wine, though this is not to imply that
it is actually Wine that has the issue (I agree with Thomas's earlier statements)
What's your specs? Is there any reason for your system to be advertising only
one pixel format? (Though from Windows I highly doubt this)

Well... then the questions are:
1) Is someone else experiencing same problem?
2) Where should I ask for further assistance (i've tried wine-user mailing
list, and got no response. In wine-devel I've got recommendation to report a
bug, so I'm here).
3) How can I locate the problem? I was able to track a crash by inserting a
printf() lines in the source (there should be other way to do this, though...),
but it looks like further tracking can be difficult since area where problem
can be found is wide - whole loader section, string allocating functions, etc.
4) Can this problem be a processor/system/distribution/whatever dependent?
5) Any pointers to fix this problem?
Even "RTFM" answer with a good direction would be nice, because right now I'm
stuck.

That just means you downloaded the wrong version of mfc42.
This isn't considered a wine bug because
mfc42 is a redistributable runtime library;
it should be bundled with the app.
The workaround is to install some other app
that installs a proper mfc42, or to install
the vc6 runtimes from microsoft.com.
(winetricks can do this for you.)

running fglrx. When starting Unreal Tournament in fullscreen mode the
monitor layout switched to a clone mode instead the previous separate layout.
The problem is: after exiting the game the clone mode stays..
That could be a problem with fglrx or with wine, I'm not completely sure.

I remember that back in the time I used to run windows I had to import dll

I copied it to the executable location.
Now it gave a new error: unimplemented function MFC42.DLL.6605

The steps as I've performed them with today's git:
rm -rf .wine
rm -rf wine
git clone git://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git wine
cd wine
./configure && make depend && make
sudo make install
cd /media/cdrom
wine setup.exe
then after following the installation through to the end
cd /home/eric/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Radical\ Games/Scarface
ls
binkw32.dll msvcr71.dll scarface.url sound2.rcf vorbisfile.dll
cement.rcf ogg.dll sierra.url vorbis.dll
movies.rcf register.url sound1.rcf vorbisenc.dll
I do not have the Scarface.exe file for one
