Yes, I put the URL to the demo in the URL field of the bug. It is this:
http://download.invitrogen.com/evergreen/Vector%20NTI%20Advance%2010.exe
This is a self-extracting cab file which will extract to c:\program files\Vector
NTI 10 Distributive\ or you can just extract it yourself. It will have the
setup.exe file. You can't get to this error by running setup.exe in a clean
install wine because it will try to install Microsoft components it needs first
(bundled), and after each it will reboot and leave a MsiExecuter.lnk in
c:\windows\profiles\yourusername\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\ which also, btw,
contains the wrong path to rundll32.exe. What you can do is after the first
reboot, this will reference c:\rundll32.exe so you can copy windows\rundll32.exe
to c:\, then do wine start MsiExecuter.lnk in the appropriate directory to
continue the installer. Then, it will look for rundll32.exe in the directory
where you ran that wine start command, so copy it there too next time you run
it. If you keep running that command after every time it says it will reboot and
die (another alternative is just to keep re-running the setup.exe program, but
then you have to answer questions about install each time), eventually it
installs (or thinks it installs, as MDAC actually requires IE) all the required
components and will proceed to its own install, where it says the dialog bog
"this module is not designed for direct execution." If you have native MSI
installed here, though, it works fine.
I am attaching a WINDEBUG=+msi log. I recommend if you want to debug it you use
the script I reference, which will download everything you need so you don't
have to do that convoluted thing I just described, just comment out the native
MSI section so it doesn't download that. The log file I am attaching is after
doing what I described, because that is the most "natural" way I can think of
launching the installer.

Is there a downloadable demo of the app?
If not, can you attach a log of the failed install?
Ideally you'd clean out the .wine directory first, e.g.
wineserver -k
rm -rf ~/.wine
wineprefixcreate
WINEDEBUG=+msi setup.exe > /tmp/log.txt 2>&1
and maybe
bzip2 /tmp/log.txt
if it's big, and then attach log.txt or log.txt.bz2.

This is run under Suse 10.2
The wine version is:
wine-0.9.29
Exit the shell, open a new shell. I rename the .wine folder, then run wineboot.
That solved the installation problem. Still there many fixme and err. I
wonder if I should report this, or this is just usual suspect.
The problem could be because I had older wine version, then just upgrade today.
The upgrade probably should check the .wine directory for integrity.

I see some similarities and some differences. I should also mention that the
problem has since then gone away. I changed to Ubuntu to try out that distro,
then went back to Fedora, and the problems went away. Wine now runs fine; I'm
guessing that it's both a Fedora and a Wine issue, or something that's a bug in
Fedora that break only Wine (i.e. some piece of code only Wine uses).
Here are some notes from before my reinstall:
-I'm not using fglrx (I have an NVIDIA card), whereas the person in that Bug
7276 uses fglrx, and that seems to be related to their problem.
-Wine's hanging in the same C file; the error messages are similar, but there
are differences. I'm pretty new to Wine and I wouldn't be able to understand
what all the messages mean. All I know is that X11 is having a problem.
-I've tried both the RPM from Fedora and compiling the code. The result is the
same. Wine is the only program I'm ever had graphical issues with, both before
and after my reinstall of FC.
-Winemine used to load, but the UI was unresponsive. I could "see" the program,
but clicking on things did nothing, and I had to use kill -9 to get rid of it.

And the reason this happens is something like:
SetFocus on the edit window triggers a KILLFOCUS message to the treeview.
KillFocus triggers an update window on the treeview, which calls TREEVIEW_Refresh.
TREEVIEW_Refresh calls UpdateScrollBars, which is the function I modified.
With my mod, if there is a horizontal scrollbar, then TREEVIEW_HScroll is called.
Very near the top of TREEVIEW_HScroll() is:
if (infoPtr->hwndEdit)
SetFocus(infoPtr->hwnd);
So that removes the focus from the edit window, and returns it to the treeview.
The simple fix is to comment out those two lines.
I guess if the user moves the scrollbars, maybe the focus should be changed. But
probably only on a click on the scrollbars (I guess some testing on Windows is
needed).

Diff file showing a change that stops the crash from occurring.
Ok, so this is not a "fix" yet but I am further researching the bug cause. This
one line change will stop the crash from occuring. Specifically, it seems that
dir_destroy which is called for a directory from release_object ends up sending
an APC which ends up calling release_object again for that object that has
already been released. Commenting out the async_terminate_q line for the dir
change_q stops the crash, although now I have to figure out exactly why.
Anyone out there understand exactly what a change queue is for a directory?
Thanks

Hi,
I had tried running it as root too, but it's the exact same problem. It prints:
wine: creating configuration directory '/root/.wine/'...
then creates a new subdirectory ".wine-somethingrandom" and hangs there forever.
I've read about people having the exact same problem on different versions of
Fedora Core too (me I'm on a spin-off of Mandrake), so it is not specific to the
Mandrake/Mandriva package. There is really a problem, the program is either
looping or endlessly waiting for something in particular.
I used to have (probably 2-3 years ago) a working installation of WINE, then
I've been a while without using it, now I need it back but I really can't get
the newer versions to work.
Thank you very much for anything you can do!

application, allowing only for horizontal movement (although it's unbounded).
This still makes the game unplayable because you are constantly aiming straight up.

Hmm... rather odd symptoms. It appears to be triggering a bug elsewhere, but I
don't know why yet. In TREEVIEW_EditLabel(), the edit window was apparently
created correctly. It appears things are going wrong in the function right near
the end in the call to:
SetFocus(hwndEdit);
In SetFocus(), the just created edit window gets destroyed, for some reason that
is not yet clear to me.

Created an attachment (id=4717)

output with xorg OpenGL implementation
To clarify what I wrote earlier:
After clicking the red "X" button in the lower right corner of the screen, a
"New turn" dialog appears. Actually the "headquaters" view should disappear at
this point and a "terrain" or "battle" view with units on them etc. should be
visible at the background.
The "hang" described earlier happens when you click the "tick" button in the
"new turn" dialog.
The display "hang" is not... "complete" (for the lack of better world).
Although very difficult to reproduce, I was able to trigger brightness changes
with some clicks (it could be with some scenario etc. but it was difficult
anyway). That's when the game displays some dialog (it was actually displayed
iirc). So the problem seems to be related to the 3d "terrain" view.

Summary: Panzer General III Scorched Earth not playable
Product: Wine

Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2

AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: phajdan.jr(a)gmail.com
The game installs and runs ok. The problems start when I try to get to the
"battle" screen. It's either crash, when I use nvidia's OpenGL implementation,
or a display "hang" when I use xorg-x11's OpenGL implementation. The "hang"
means that display is not updated - music plays, mouse moves etc. Steps to
reproduce:
1. Run PG3.exe
2. On the main game screen (after two splashes which you can skip with a
mouseclick) click "tutorial". (This is the simplest way; you can also use
campaign or scenario; the "battle" screen is the thing which seems to trigger
the problem).
3. Click the red Russian flag on the Estonian territory and then click a tick
button in the lower right corner of the screen.
4. On the next screen click the tick button in the corner.
5. On the next screen (headquaters-like) click the red "X" button in the corner.
6. Voila! Crash or hang.
Demo is available at
http://www.download.com/Panzer-General-III-Scorched-Earth-updated-demo/3000…
(demo from original site is no longer available).
I'm using wine version 0.9.30 on Gentoo Linux, amd64. Earlier tried with 0.9.10
(couldn't get past step 3 - it hanged) and 0.9.18 (hang at startup, black screen).
My graphics card is Nvidia Geforce 6200 TurboCache with nvidia-drivers v. 1.0.9631.
I'm not sure whether the component field I set for this bug is correct (it could
be -d3d).
I will attach what wine prints on console in both cases (nvidia's or xorg's
OpenGL implementation).

Hi,
i noticed a bug in WINE. In WINE Versions up to 0.9.21, mouse support in Heavy
Metal F.A.K.K. 2 (Quake III Engine-based Game by Ritual Entertainment) worked
fine, but in WINE 0.9.22-0.9.27, it's broken (you can' move the mouse at all).
In Wine 0.9.29 and higher, it works but it's buggy. There sometimes seem to be
invisible horizontal or vertical lines on the screen that you can't pass with
the mouse pointer. I didn't test WINE 0.9.28 (no suse rpms).
btw, i don't know if this game actually uses DirectInput, that's merely a guess...

Summary: WINE shows redundant "tabs" with tabbed MDI
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.30.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: scallegari(a)arces.unibo.it
I am using a software that uses MDI and that creates a tab for each document.
When documents are minimized, redundant tabs start to appear. If I click on
them, I get weird windows with no proper frame and nothing inside (typically all
white or all blue)...
This is a regression with regard to old versions of wine (I would not be able to
precisely say how old). In fact, the software that I am using (namely SWCADIII)
was originally developed to be wine-friendly (including about-wine information
when run under wine) and used to work glitch-less with wine.
To test and reproduce, SWCADIII can be downloaded free at
http://www.linear.com/designtools/softwareRegistration.jsp (note that no
registration is in fact required)...
Open a new sample schematic (many are included in the software)
Start a simulation using the simulation button
Select some output signal to plot in order to get a waveform document
[With this you trigger MDI on... there are now 2 documents: a schematic (named
something.asc) one and a plot one (something.raw)]
Now minimize the two windows
[you should notice the first glitch: icons for the two documents appear one on
top of the other... not a big issue]
Now remaximize the documents... spurios tabs appear.

Forget that sound crap I just said, it might have an effect on performance, and
game hangs with alsa for me, but doesnt matter for this bug.
However, I may have a workaround/fix..
Changing the VideoMemorySize (see http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys ) to
256 (256mb 7900 GT) I never get this error, in fact, that game runs quite well
on my system (see below, as its quite specific).
IF you read the blurb about the VideoMemorySize option, it would seem automatic
detection of the right ammount of memory (vs the 64 meg default probably getting
applied to sufferes of this bug) is not working.
If anyone else could elaborate on this that would be great, but for the moment
im doing well. No interesting shaders work, nor does water, but im getting great
frames.
As far as the shaders, go I imagine Ill have to wait till the glsl implentation
gets mature, but if you see the above URL, there are options to enable what
support we currently have with it. Sounds like fun.

As I suggested to Stefan on IRC a week or so ago the proper fix for this
regression is to add ShowWindow(hwnd, SW_SHOW) after the SetWindowPos() call.

This is distro configuration problem. To *test only* - run Wine as root.
And please NEVER PASTE LOGS!!! Attach them instead.

Summary: winecfg hangs forever in creation of .wine subdirectory
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.29.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: stephaneg47(a)hotmail.com
A major problem that many others seem to have run into in the last 2-3 months,
according to what I saw on Google (but no one seems to have an answer). The
first time we run wine or winecfg, it prints a:
wine: creating configuration directory '/[user]/.wine'...
and then hangs there FOREVER (I've let it run for over 2 hours and really
nothing happens), so I am never able to use it at all. Everytime winecfg is
launched, a new subdirectory such as ".wine-AMrsh4" is created, but no ".wine"
ever gets created. Three processes remain in memory (wineprefixcreate, wine-
preloader and wineserver), but none of them is using more than 0.1% of CPU or
RAM.
I have:
-Wine 0.9.29 from the official Mandrake/Mandriva RPM package
-a Mandrake 10.0 compatible distribution
-glibc 2.3.3
-GCC 3.3.2
However, I have seen the problem reported more often on users using Fedora Core
than Mandrake/Mandriva.
I tried to build from source, but it is much more complicated because it does
not automatically find my X devel libraries even though they are properly
installed (the Mandrake/Mandriva RPM goes through without any problem).
Unfortunately I can't post the full output that I get when running winecfg with
WINEDEBUG because it goes above the Bugzilla limit of 65,536 characters, but
here are the last few lines that get printed before it hangs:

I had exactly the same errors without teamspeak as you have, although not with
any specific application. But I did find a solution for it partially at Kubuntu
forums and partially by loading some additional audio libraries.
To be honest, I have no clue, exactly which package removed the error about
libjack.so, as I just loaded all the missing ones I felt reasonable and that
error vanished.
About the seq_hw problem... It seems the snd-seq kernel module does not get
loaded by default. Try running
$ sudo modprobe snd-seq
That worked for me on the rest of those non-teamspeak errors. It only is my
guess, but the rest of errors might get corrected in a similar way.

Can someone confirm that changing their audio settings in winecfg from just
alsa, to just OSS, and see if it helps this problem, (I think it did for me),
other problems or even general performance?

I think the best thing would be (eventually) to have an option in WineCFG which
basically has a dropdown menu of what version of DirectX to emulate.

This is best seen in the intro just before you get control as it's going through
the corridors, most of the doorways showing some weird "view into infinity"
effect. This is also true for some of the doors in the game too, especially the
first through you have to go through.

I ran into same bug using winword; here's a simple patch that prevents the crash
for me at least:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2007-January/035334.html
Quite doubtful if it will make it into git though...
Maybe you could try if it helps for your app too.

People keep reporting breakages with FC. These are bugs with FC and not Wine,
they patch the kernel in such ways that it just seems to break Wine for unknown
reasons.
You could on the other hand try updating to some different ATi drivers, as those
have caused similar issues on occasions.

I think this bug should be reconsidered , when you set Wine to emulate Win98 ,
you would expect the system to act like a win98 install and emulate directX 6.1
too , there might be other software acting the same way.
And It sure wouldn't hurt wine to become a better emulator than Windows itself.
You are making astonishing progress 3D - wise and I think it wouldn't be a biggie
to make Wine emulate DirectX 6.1 too.
Reopening bug.
Feel free to close it if you think otherwise.

I can confirm this bug as well. For me, it appeared after upgrading my Fedora
Core 6 from package wine-core-0.9.27-1.fc6.i386 to wine-core-0.9.29-1.fc6.i386.
(All related packages were updated at the same time, so I'm not sure if it is
wine-core or one of the related packages that causes the issue.)
Currently, I only use wine to run Quicken 2000 deluxe and Quickbooks 6.0. On
both applications, every time a new window is opened, the two leftmost menu
options "go away". Once there are no more options, the menu bar disappears as well.
HTH,
Carl

In other words you intentionally and knowingly do cripple Wine with

I think the bug can be closed.

Summary: Several graphical corruptions in Railroad Tycoon 3
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.30.
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: kde(a)3danim.de
There are several graphical corruptions when running Railroad Tycoon 3 under Wine.
1. Distorted water reflections are not drawn
This is a screenshot of what reflections look like under Windows:
http://cerberus.gamershell.com/screenshots/3248/50648_full.jpg
A screenshot of the game under Wine and the WINEDEBUG=+err log follow below.
2. Detailed ground textures cause heavy flickering
It appears as though the detailed textures are drawn as additional polygons
slightly above the lowres-ground model. The flickering looks like the
"classical" z-buffer error, where polygons are sometimes rendered above and in
the next frame below the ground.
3. The overlay in the minimap and in construction menus is not transparent
The camera direction is drawn as a gradient transparent polygon on top of the
minimap in Windows. Under Wine, this polygon is opaque. Same applies for the
selections in the construction menu.
See screenshot below.
Reference: http://www.railroadtycoon.de/images/screens/rt3_ss06.jpg
4. Menu selections are hidden under a black box.
In the settings menu, the selected item is obscured by a black box. See screenshot.
The test system has an NVIDIA 6800 GPU and is running the NVIDIA UNIX x86_64
Kernel Module 1.0-9746.

Ok, so to make this bug easy to debug, I would recommend just downloading my
installation script
http://misha680.googlepages.com/InstallVectorNTI10.sh
and commenting out the section that downloads native MSI, as there are a few
others problems in the installation that one would have to bypass to get to the
MSI error (basically the installer tries to install a bunch of things like MDAC,
etc., and each time it reboots, leaving a .lnk file in the StartUp section of
the Start Menu, but since wine never runs this file it just stops; also it seems
the .lnk file references rundll32.exe not in the path but rather in the current
directory, which usually doesn't exist, I don't know if this is an installer bug
or a wine bug).

running Fedora Core6 on a modern PC.
Any time I invoke wine, either running a windows program or winecfg, (which run
fine), when I press "System" "Shutdown" the panels and icons dissapear, the
keyboard becomes inactive but I'm left with the desktop wallpaper and an active
mouse cursor, then I have to turn the power off.
However if I do "poweroff" at a terminal, initially I get the same wallpaper and
mouse, but after several seconds the computer does shutdown.
I've checked in system monitor that no wine programs are still running after I
terminate the windows app
Also running core4 on this PC, that doesn't have this problem, it's got version
0.9.27
If I don't run wine during a session shutdown is normal.

This one is actually solved quite easily: You need to run the game from the
directory it was installed in. Otherwise it will have trouble finding its
language file and therefore show the empty message box.
If you do that, the error message will probably tell you that DirectInput could
not grab mouse input. After running 'wineprefixcreate' you should however be
able to start the game.
