Command & Conquer does indeed have an AppDB entry; it was even one of the
first applications added.
Confirming.
I have seen this problem in both Command & Conquer and C&C: Red Alert. It is
especially noticable in the GDI/NOD selection screen, and on the score screen
and misson selection.
All these involves a mouse cursor on what may be a background produced by a
film.

> Since this might be card/driver specific, I should have given

I don't think that this is driver specific. I tested current git with Xorg 6.9
and 7.1 with 9629, 9631 and 9742 (beta) NVidia drivers - OpenGL child windows
are drawn correctly but everything else is overdrawn with black. Of course this
can be considered like "improvement" but only if this is first step in fixing
this problem. This affect all application that uses child windows include
Google Earth, Lightwave and many, many others...
What is espesially bad with this bug that it affects all professional software
that uses OpenGL/Direct3D. There is other bugs with Direct3D child window in
Google Earth (at least) but before fixing minor bugs we first must fix somehow
this rest-of-window-overdrawn-by-black problem - this probably biggest bug in
current Wine. There is no other *single* bug that affect so many applications.
As I said I think that everyone have this probmlem but in case if someone have
no rest-of-window-overdrawn-by-black problem please report what
videodriver and X server you have.

Summary: Page fault in IWineGDISurfaceImpl_Blt
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: All
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-ddraw
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: baerwulf(a)iinet.net.au
When windows game "Empire Earth II" calls the Blt method of DirectDrawSurface7
it results in a page fault. this was traced to wined3d/surface_gdi.c
IWineGDISurfaceImpl_Blt where it appears that the .Pitch of the surface that is
being copied to is different to the width of the rectangle and as such attempts
to memcpy to an address range that is outside of the surface. I am unsure of
whether this is a bug in wine or a "Feature" of Microsoft's DirectX. the
attached patch fixes the problem when compiled with preprocessor flag
-DEE2BLTBUGFIX. This patch was created as a preprocessor option to avoid
breaking other programs. Other subsections of this method may still contain a
similar bug (i.e. when Blt is called with other Flags).
Other bug reports appear to show similar problems in other programs.

Upgrade to latest Wine version and try again. Also try installing corefonts.
Your program might be using some fonts that Wine does not provide. Also if you
built Wine yourself make sure to run './configure --verbose' and fix all
complaints at the end of it. Especially recent version of fontforge.

Summary: TaxCut causes an unhandled exception
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.27.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-programs
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: scott(a)scottseverance.us
When trying to execute the H&R Block TaxCut installer (TaxCut.exe), wine exits
with an unhandled exception.
I'm attaching the backtrace as well as an ISO of the CD in question. (I hope
it's OK to attach the ISO...I can't access the license agreement, but the CD was
sent to me for free.)
Note: Bugzilla forced me to specify a component for this bug, despite the fact
that it is impossible for me to know what component contains the bug, as I'm not
familiar with the source code. Therefore, the component I selected is probably
incorrect.

With a clean .wine directory, I went to sourceforge, downloaded the program
(v4), installed it and ran it. When I first ran the program, it did a bunch of
DLL updates, and verified the updates. Then I got a little tray icon that warms
up my cpu. This is with latest git on a 64-bit pentium 4 in ubuntu. Can anyone
else confirm the (non)existance of the bug?

Wine still crashes when changing graphics settings in WoW for me, using the

There also seems to be a new regression, where clickable things in the game

Hi again. You were indeed right about the regression thing. I found some other
apps that can produce the "installation support file"-error with all
wine-versions. So this bug has never been fixed.
But I also found out something interesting about the HeroesV-patch: The error is
not caused by the patch itself, but by the HeroesV-installer. I think it's like
that: When I install HeroesV some bug makes the HeroesV-installer create a file
that is somehow "bad". Now when I run the patch-installer it accesses this file,
but due to the file being corrupted the patch-installer doesn't know what to do
and fails.
The file in question is "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation
Information\{20071984-5EB1-4881-8EDB-082532ACEC6D}\setup.ilg".
I installed HeroesV with wine. Then I installed HeroesV on Windows XP. After
that I copied the file setup.ilg from windows to the wine-directory, replacing
the existing one, and ... I could install the patch.

well, this app still doesn't run for me with current git. However , even if i
changeback to older wine versions before the regression it still doesn't work. I
guess this must be due to an update of the ATI driver i did in the meanwhile, a
time ago. Basically i dunno what to do with this bug now.

Summary: SecuROM thinks wine is a CDROM emulator

As far as I can tell, there is no current workaround for SecuROM available at
the moment.
Also, it appears the game Perimeter may actually also employ this copy
protection method and not StarFire as previously thought (I got a similar
message whem trying to install and play it on a VMware using WinXP)

The code has been added to CVS. It appears that ATI does support pbuffers on
most of their driver versions though it is buggy on some older versions (the
last versions which supported the radeon 8500/9000). So I think this bug can be
closed, could you try the latest cvs/git version and verify this?

I've observed similar packet fragmentation during HTTP sessions with eMule's web
interface.
Watching things from Wireshark, when eMule's web interface is accessed by a
browser running on the same machine (via localhost) the session progresses
flawlessly, but when accessed over the LAN packet fragmentation appears during
transmission of some of the larger .gif content (which causes the HTTP session
to stall indefinitely and leaves the web interface completely useless).
I've had this problem with all versions of eMule and Wine for at least the past
year.

Seeing as it's working and we just need a decent design, and that this blocks a
large number of games, I think we ought to aim to have it finished for 1.0 if
possible.

I have no idea, all I can say is that your setup is not using NPTL for some
reason. I'm afraid you'll need to debug that yourself.

Ghost Recon expansion log with +ole,+storage,+seh
Just encountered this with Ghost Recon.
I installed Ghost Recon then went to install the Mission packs. The installer
would get to about 90% of the preparation bar then tell me the game wasn't
installed.
I then did a "wineboot" which seemed to fix that.
Now when I run the installer for the Mission Packs I get the "An installation
support file could not be installed. (0x8000ffff)" before it even gets to 1%
(basically it does it instantly).
GZipped as it's 1.6MB.

This still happens when using a "switcher" script (like the one in the Diablo II
how-to section) that starts the game with a NoCD executable (just a normal
cracked one) then swaps back the original. Game loads fine but crashes the
moment you try and log in with a character onto Battle.NET.
Game works fine with the original CD and starting via the original EXE though (a
nightmare for testing though and for those of us that hate switching CDs :p).
My only concern though is if this isn't actually a Wine error, I'll test it on
Windows when I get a chance to see if it works there.

I can't imagine any way that glibc should be touched. Inspire me! :-)

The previous version of Second Life I had installed worked fine (not sure what

logging in I was told I needed to update by the client, I did, but the app
begins to load then closes itself. I uninstalled it entirely and installed a
clean version but it still does the same thing so it's not an old configuration

Ah, scratch all that planned effort.
Yesterday, I built several versions, differing only in configure options.
Sometimes it worked, sometimes not.
Then I found that "it works" does not depend on the wine build - it depends on
where I run BLADES.EXE from.
Situation:
I have my windows (FAT32) partition mounted on /dos/c -t vfat.
Clean build of wine, so this resolves to Z:\DOS\C.
When I run b.o.e. from '/dos/c/Program Files/B/blades.exe', it's broken.
When I run it from '~/.wine/Program Files/B/blades.exe', it works.
When I run it from '/dos/c/temp/B/blades.exe', it works.
When I run it from '/dos/c/temp/B C/blades.exe', it's broken.
[ all with the same build of wine ]
Hypothesis: There is some mismatch with short filenames on dos drives.
(I distantly recall that I had this issue years ago - somewhere inside wine,
paths were expanded - with short filenames, which did not match what the
filesystem reported there was; I think I then "fixed" that by making it use
long names instead).
So, it's all (can't load *and* the garbled screen) actually 'file-not-found'
symptoms.

Bug appears with both 2.50, and 3.03 versions of Vaz Modular, in every wine version.

The bug is caused by the shutdown procedure of each module window, so you need

functions. And if a key is on an unsupported modifier (like ALT+3 => # in
sg-layout) the error occurs. Shouldn't be too hard too fix, I'll give it a try.

The demo claims that the game is either infected with a virus or that the
Hard-Disk is damaged and doesn't start (neither are true). The "cracked" demo to
make it work as a full version apparently works so I think it may be something
to do with some sort of weird 'tamper protection' the demo uses which doesn't
work properly under Wine. No idea which component to file this under, the log
is... different.
Previous AppDB entry states the same issue with the demo so setting to verified.

Well OK. Unfortunately I cannot edit the description anymore, only the summary.
What do you mean by "then it is on Windows"?
Running eMule on Windows uses 0% CPU when it is idle. Idle GUI programs should
not use any CPU when idle. Well the log file seems like it should be easy for
someone who knows the Wine code to identify which thread is stuck in an infinite
loop, I don't know the wine source code very well unfortunately. Would be nice
if someone could take a look :)

The SWAT4 installer fails on the first file of the second CD. I thought copying
everything to the HD would get around this but it didn't help, it still fails on
the same file, the point in the log where it fails is...
err:msi:ACTION_InstallFiles compressed file wasn't extracted (L"c:\\Program

err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"InstallFinalize" returned 1603
Attaching demo for completeness, not sure if it's affected though, I doubt it is.
Confirming as the previous AppDB entry to mine mentioned the same problem
(although copying to the HD with that version of Wine fixed it in his case).

Everytime when this application tries to conntact/open the IE this
Error-Message appears and nothing else happend. This error doesn't depend on
the faked Win-version nor if an IE is installed or not. The other functions
work with some minor optical glitches. Like the background of the mainwindow
of the application is completly transparent and isn't repaint so if I move the
window it keeps the same picture then was beyond it while started.
I hope my description is not all to unclear.

I cannot tell whether the Webinterface problem is caused by the CPU-time problem
or not. For example it might be possible that the thread which uses to much CPU
takes the CPU-time from the Webinterface-thread. Especially because in the past
it was using 100% CPU always. Therefore I put those two problems into one report.
Besides, this is not a minor severe bug because it effectively prevents me from
using eMule:
- it slows down the whole system to an inacceptable level (because the CPU usage
is not proportional to CPU speed I cannot just install a faster CPU)
- it also prevents me from actually using my linux-box as an eMule-Server
because I cannot access eMule via Webinterface and I have no physical access to
the computer all the time. So I cannot use eMule because of the problem.

Good morning,
I'm not familiar with the winecfg at all. My interest in this is that I downloaded a trial version of Norton Security and when it tries to execute the error message say that it couldn't find the entry point "GetModuleHandleExW". When I would open the Kernel32.dll in notepad I saw "GetModuleHandleA" and "GetModuleHandleW" but not "GetModuleHandleExW". I started trying to research how I could add it but was slightly on the fear side because I didn't want to mess anything up. Can you help?
Regards,
Paula

You probably need to install MDAC. While this comes with newer versions of Windows, it doesn't come
with older versions like Windows 95 and NT 4 (and probably Windows 98 too). So the software should
install it itself, or at least warn you about this. Therefore, this is a bug in the program, not Wine.

Yes, I got the same code I built on the school machine (where it *did* work),
brought it home, rebuilt (in the same environment - same configure options,
clean build, install into dedicated tree, renamed my ~/.wine - just so that my
older wine (and Windows) installs wouldn't interfere ...
... and it's still broken, somewhere. On both accounts.
[ and sound works ]
Currently, I have a as-much-as-possible-disabled build going on.
The computer is 'netless, which has unpleasant testing and time consequences.
Now, I will try
1) building as statically linked binaries as possible and switching them
between machines
2) building in the same environment (knoppix dvd)
3) full debug logs
I hope to find out if/whether it is other-software or even hardware problem.
Still, I don't see how one of those could affect *opening* of files, when it
works otherwise.

Although this hack likely works it can't be added to Wine. I have done some
additional research and it appears my hack won't work correctly on all cards
after all. The issue is in Ati's drivers. They report a (clientside) GLX version
of 1.3 which implicitly means that pbuffers are supported as they are a 1.3
feature. Further them advertising GLX_ATI_render_texture implies that as well as
it requires pbuffers. The issue is that even on cards like the old radeon
8500/9000 they advertise this but they don't support pbuffers on those.....

OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: test
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: kmachstang(a)hotmail.com
I used to use Wine v0.9.20 with Ubuntu 6.06. I ran a program called zmud7.21
from www.zuggsoft.com. The program worked great. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu
6.10 and installed Wine v0.9.27. Now after I install Zmud7.21, the program runs,
but I don't get any local echo in the command line for zmud. Seems like
something broke between now and 0.9.20.

I applied the patch from #28, it works great for me. If nobody is working on
this problem, please apply this patch, even if it is quick and dirty.

What do you have installed on Wine?
Did you happened to run Wine as root _ever_?
How are you installing Wine?
In either case, it seems shareza uses lots of windows only features that do not
exist on Wine and probably will not (upnp, power management, etc).

Ubuntu 6.10 "Edgy Eft" + wine 0.9.2.7
Steam was crashing just after the steaminstall.exe installating. It was just
displayed "Updating (0%)"
So I download "steaminstall_cs.exe" (Who contains half-life + CS), and it works.

Was fixed in commit 3c5b9557b548a122a7375cf199b4a9b242506115 "ddraw: Fix
IDirectDrawSurfaceImpl_SetColorKey to also change surface_desc."
The Problem was that SetColorKey did not change the surface description (only
the underlying WineD3D surface), so GetColorKey returned the old value, which
Baldur's Gate used to draw the transparent portions of the sprites. The actual
blitting was done with the correct color key.
