Summary: LineTo not updating bounds rectangle (GetBoundsRect)
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.12.
Platform: PC
URL: http://www.bbcbasic.co.uk/boundbug.exe
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-gdi-(printing)
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: richard(a)rtrussell.co.uk
The following code should set the bounds rectangle to {0,0,1001,1001} but
under Wine 0.9.12 the rectangle remains empty. This causes a failed window
refresh, since the bounds rectangle is used for a subsequent InvalidateRect.
The window remains blank until moved or forcibly refreshed.
RECT rc = {0} ;
HDC hdc = GetDC (hwnd) ;
HDC memhdc = CreateCompatibleDC (NULL);
HBITMAP bitmap = CreateCompatibleBitmap (hdc, 1920, 1440);
ReleaseDC (hwnd, hdc) ;
SelectObject (memhdc, bitmap) ;
SetBoundsRect (memhdc, NULL, DCB_ENABLE | DCB_RESET);
MoveToEx (memhdc, 0, 0, NULL);
LineTo (memhdc, 1000, 1000);
GetBoundsRect (memhdc, &rc, 0);
InvalidateRect (hwnd, &rc, 0);

I can only suggest you to try to change font configuration, so that a less wide
font is used. I think that character count limit works ok, but the 4 letters
don't fit in the box with the font chosen by Wine. I had such problem in other
apps.

To download wine refer to http://www.winehq.org/site/download
This is Wine's bugzilla not crossover's. If you have any problems with it, don't
report them here.
Wine in a beta stage and "blocker" means "Wine does not compile for most users".
The problem you are talking about probably fixed in current Wine version (0.9.27).

The specific application I'm trying to install is: Xilinx ISE Foundation 7.1i
http://www.xilinx.com/ise/logic_design_prod/foundation.htm
Note that this problem also happens with the latest beta of CrossOver Linux. If
they're not using a new-enough WINE base, let me know, and I'll download and
build whatever version of WINE you want me to try.
So I don't mess up my Ubuntu install, I want to run the newer version of WINE
from a user directory. That is possible, right?
Note that unless I still don't understand your rating system, I would classify
this bug as "Major" because I am completely blocked from using this application.

Summary: Off-by-one in character limit for edit field
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.9.

Priority: P1
Component: wine-gui

I'm trying to install Xilinx ISE software. During the installation process, I
am presented with four four-character edit fields into which I must enter a
16-digit license key. Under Windows, I am allowed to enter all four digits into
each field. Under WINE, I am only allowed to enter three digits into each field
(making it impossible for me to install the app).
My best guess is that WINE has a bug where edit fields are limited to one fewer
characters than what is specified by the application.

Component: wine-richedit

ReportedBy: renu.rajput(a)gmail.com
The application I tested, uses a richedit control, which shows some log data.
The log file contains a list of files along with some other information. The
name of the file is hyperlinked using CFM_LINK format. Whenever the
hyperlinked file name is clicked, the appropriate file is opened.
The above behavior works fine, as long as all the lines are visible.
- Scroll the display one line up (i.e. the first line is not visible), and if
I click on any particular link, the file in one line above gets opened. E.g. I
clicked on line#4; the file in line#3 gets opened
- If the first two lines are hidden, then file at line# n is opened if the
link at line# n+2 is opened and so on
The same pattern follows, as the number of scrolled/hidden lines increases.
I briefly looked at the Wine code, and it seems that the relative character
offset, and the absolute character offset (relative to the start of the
document)are not synchronized when the lines are scrolled up.

By way of confirmation, I found that removing my Windows fonts, plus a few font
adjustments in User Preferences, avoided most of the problems I was seeing with
crashes caused by certain emails. I still have a few complex emails and some
SPAM that cause crashes, but presumably these have a different cause.
I have not tried building Wine according to the above mentioned patch.
I am running Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy, Wine 0.9.22, Lotus Notes 7.0.1.

I'm voting that this is not a wine bug.
My 2 cents
This doesn't appear to be a v1.11 problem. I have had my MBR trashed with a
cherry v1.00 install. It seems more like an ATAPI problem to me?
The reason I say this is that I only get my MBR trashed if I _don't_ use the
NoCD hack. When I start any version of Diablo II ( except v1.09 ) and I get the
little pop-up asking me to insert the Play CD, at this time my MBR is trashed.
If I use the NoCD hack I don't get the pop-up and my MBR doesn't get trashed.
Now this part is strange. v1.09 works and doesn't trash the MBR even if I get
the Insert CD popup... strange. But when I patch to v1.11b I once again get
trashed MBR.
I could not find a v1.10 patch for Windows version only for Mac and OSX so I can
not verify v1.10.
My suggestion is to use the NoCD Hack and you don't have to worry about your MBR
even if your user is in disk group.

This game didn't used to be like this so this is a regression, I'll begin

I've since reinstalled my laptop with Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper),
which uses server
xserver-xorg 7.0.0-0ubuntu45
I had to jump through all sorts of hoops until "ps augx | grep X"
didn't show "nolisten tcp" (first I tried editing gdm.conf,
but I couldn't find the right one, so I gave up, did
sh /etc/init.d/gdm stop, logged in on the console,
edited /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc to remove the nolisten tcp,
and started X with startx), and then I had to figure
out to remove ~/.Xauthority. Whew! After all that,
I was finally able to run Xeyes, and try the recipe I gave.
Works fine. So either it was a problem with the X server in
fc3, or wine's been fixed. I'll mark it WFM.

Yes, I was using -O3. Switching to -O2 lets vartest.c be compiled just like

a compilation error (didn't save the exact message) very early in the build

I had the exact same error (access violation at c0000005), but I'm NOT using
ALSA (not the ALSA interface - my wine is setup to use OSS, but my drivers are
ALSA with oss-compat modules).
The error disappeared when switching to 2D ddraw. That would suggest it's not
sound related?
Anyway, my info:
- wine 0.9.27 (with debian patches)
- sound card is onboard VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 (snd_via82xx)

I'm not using Windows Media, but rather wizmo
(http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=6433). Please download the app,
and try the following test commands:
wine wizmo volume=1
wine wizmo volume=100
wine wizmo mute=1
The first is meant to set the volume to 1, essentially the lowest setting, and
the second should set it to the maximum. The last command mutes everything.
None of them worked, but they do work on Windows. I may be misstating the
problem, but there is a deficiency here. It's okay if wine maps controls the
sound driver directly, but it should implement this API (unfortunately, I don't
know the actual calls here).

Looks like this is a regression of bug 5306
and/or a dup of bug 6203.
Does adding -fno-unit-at-a-time to the CFLAGS for vartest.c help?
Were you using aggressive compilation options, e.g. -O3 or -Os?
Feel free to submit a patch that splits vartest
and resolves your problem.
Confirming because this is believable, has happened in the past,
and will probably happen again in the future as vartest.c
continues to grow.

This is related to bug 5306.
Part of the solution is "don't compile vartest.c with -O3 or -Os".
It is probably possible to add a line to the Makefile
to remove those options from CFLAGS for that one file if present;
that would make life easier for people who insist on using
aggressive optimizations. Reopening
as a reminder for us to look at doing that.

the original dreamfall.exe and with a "no-cd" modified one (that some suggested).
First I choose not to install the included DirectX9 update.
when I launch the executable like this
$ wine dreamfall.exe

$ wine explorer /desktop=DreamFall,1024x768 dreamfall.exe
I get the following:
(see "dreamfall.nodx9.log" attachment)
The missing "d3dx9_27.dll" dll is provided by the included directx9 update.
After installing that and I launch the game, I get the following error message:
(see "dreamfall.withdx9.log" attachment)
while the game pops-up a little window with the following message:
"Failed to initialize Direct3D. Aborting."
I'm testing this on a NV28 (GeForce TI 4200 Go) using the 9631 proprietary
nvidia drivers which are in working order. I use a fresh wine directory and I
compiled the 0.9.27 myself. Otherwise wine works fine (for what I normally use
it for). I can even run 3DMark2001SE (to a certain extend)

Ok, found the issue as String pointed out in IRC. The game doesn't start in
Virtual Desktop mode due to the game requiring the user to be using a refresh
rate of 60hz (Virtual Desktop reports 0hz apparently).
So this bug is still valid and the title has been changed to be more specific.

I should have specified, this is version 1.61 of the game which I hear from
killertux hasn't ever worked under Wine even with specific patches (which I'm
not using btw, I only test things with vanilla Wine).
Wine 0.9.20 fails with the same error. Looks like the game broke (more) when it
was updated. It never truly worked properly in the first place even with patches.

memory to swap and slow down considerably. So splitting this file into smaller

I usually build with -pedantic and numerous warning flags. Wine gave me a few
easily-addressed compile-time errors with same. I will attach a patch against
the git source; below are the items fixed.
wine/dlls/msi/action.c: The initial declaration of the StandardActions array
fails because the array size is unknown. Worked around by making it a pointer
[to an array of structs].
wine/dlls/user32/spy.c: The declaration of the WINEMessageTypeNames array
consistently fails with an "array too large" error, even though the specified
size seems right. This appears to have to do with WM_WINE_MOUSE_LL_HOOK being
such a large number (over 0x80000000), which makes the size value a "long".
Fixed by removing the size value. Also, removed a stray comma.
wine/dlls/winex11.drv/clipboard.c: PropertyAliasMap was an empty array, which
GCC didn't like.

Hi,
First of all, thank you for working on this product. I am trying to get
SOMETHING working on Wine and have not been able to so far (including IE6).
Since I'm new to wine, I suspect I have not configured it properly.
I was trying to set up msi overrides as described at this link:
http://wiki.winehq.org/NativeMsi
I deleted my .wine to get rid of all old stuff and started winecfg. I set wine
to run as Windows 98 and selected msi from the "New Overrides for Library" drop
down list on the Library tab. I then exited by clicking the OK button.
Next, I removed the ./drive_c/windows/system32/msiexec.exe files and copied the
InstMsiA.exe file from the site in that order. When I run wine InstMsiA.exe I
get the errors in the attached file. Is this expected?
I did get a windows/Installer/InstMsi0 directory with a bunch of files under my
drive_c at the end of this though.

Summary: Wizmo can't trigger screensaver
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.26.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: wine-user
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: matthew.flaschen(a)gatech.edu
Wizmo is unable to trigger a screensaver when:
wine wizmo blank
is executed.
Wizmo was written in assembly, but apparently the API calls are basically:
SendMessage(GetDesktopWindow(),WM_SYSCOMMAND,SC_SCREENSAVE,0)
I got that from http://blogs.msdn.com/calvin_hsia/archive/2004/10/04/237723.aspx
SendMessage is documented at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/winui/winu…
However, I have no idea where wizmo is failing. I'll attach the entire
backtrace with WINEDEBUG=+all . I tried this with both xscreensaver and KDE's
screensaver.

This program still does the C0000005 crash upon loading, only now the crash is
consistent. (It used to crash intermittently).
I am told that the program runs ok on windows because windows sometimes permits
the behavior. The question I have is: Is this a wine bug or a program bug? The
crash happens in the MorayWin.exe file immediately after communicating with
wine's USER32, just after the splash screen, while trying to create the window.
This page explains "What is a C0000005 crash?"

ok im back,

i found all other dll's in .wine/drive_c/Programme/Gemeinsame Dateinen/Autodesk

i copied them into the app folder, then the errors disappeared.
now i got some new errors (should i open a new bug report?):

nThis:
Due to the amount of bug reports that all happen because Wine does not implement
any DirectPlay providers itself, here is a metabug to collect them all in one place.
A workaround to get DirectPlay working for now is to use native dlls as
explained on http://wiki.winehq.org/DirectPlayGames.

Because of issues similar to the ones described in this bugreport glut32 has
been removed from Wine. The dll isn't a core dll and because of this forking it
wasn't needed and second the code of freeglut (which is X11 licensed) was more
than 1MB in size. (The source to standard glut is available too but its license
is not compatible with the LGPL)
So if programs need glut32 you would have to install it by hand but most
programs seem to ship it themself already including the Nvidia demos.

I could not find an entry for this application in the AppDB. Could you please
add entry for this program. http://appdb.winehq.org

I agree that is cutting off szOtherStuff is bad and should be fixed but I think
that displaying "Wine was bought to you by ..." list is nice idea. In fact it
definitely doesn't say that depelopers of Wine created *this* application - it
just say who developed Wine. Also please note that Wine's notepad and others
Wine's standard programs also uses this about box. And I agree with Mike - it
is good practice to create patches and then discuss them for such minor bugs
if you really care about this. Of course I do not say that someone who created
bug report *must* create patches to get bug fixed - this way simply faster for
such trivial bugs.
> In at least one case (original
> Notepad), there is no indication of the original copyright/authorship at all,
> and a careless read makes it seem like Wine wrote it!
If you managed to run original Notepad then you must know that it belongs to
Windows. But in fact it is more Notepad's bug that it doesn't contain copyright
information (real (not neccessary official) copyright owner is programmer(s)
who wrote it and not Microsoft; in this case Microsoft is official copyright
owner). Theoretically it is possible to determine that that this is Microsoft
Notepad and display this within about box but someone must write patch for
this. It would be nice of course and I agree that it is good if someone
implement this but such implementation should be careful - it shouldn't display
Microsoft's copyright within Wine's Notepad!
I think that only "real" bug is problem with szOtherStuff. Other problems
discussed here isn't actually bugs - I think it is more correct to call them
design solutions. What design is better is just someone's opinion and virtually
all opinions that make any sense is "right" but only one can be actually used.

>choose one method
The preprocessor lines aren't there for the computer, it's there for the
implementor of this patch. If they decide to do the extra work of caching, the
lines are shown that do the work. If not they drop the extra cache lines and
implement the simpler non caching method. The implementor may also choose to do
the work with internal GUI primitives to improve speed.
>Don't use C++-style comments
The comments are for the implementor of the patch not for the final Wine code.
They are to answer the questions that the implementor will have "Why didn't you
do it some other way?" Answer: I tried those other ways and found them to be
slower or less compatible.
>It would be easier to check your code if you sent it as a patch to wine-devel
I can't send it as a patch because I don't run Wine. It would be inappropriate
for me to submit code that I haven't tested under the target OS. This was all
developed in Windows where I have the real DrawFocusRect to compare behavior.
>We want to be able to see exactly what you've changed
That's easy. All the old code was thrown away and the new code is printed above.
The old code is sufficient only as a stop gap solution until someone takes the
time to produce the new code.
>How do you know it's more correct than our current implementation?
In Windows I have the real DrawFocusRect that I can draw on whatever test colors
I can dream up. I hack until my DrawFocusRect always produces the same result. A
quick read of the comments in Wine DrawFocusRect acknowledges that the current
way is wrong and PatBlt is the right way. I'm providing working PatBlt code.
>How do you know that it's faster?
The Windows project I built to produce the code has the necessary timing code to
demonstrate performance in Windows. Wine performance is likely to be similar.

Matthew,
The best way to resolve this bug is to submit patches to fix it, then we can
debate the patches on wine-devel.

> So since wine 0.9.23.....
I already did but... that's why I asked... It's confusing.
my bug #6840 was marked as dupe of this, but I'm using
1. notepad++ 3.*9*
2. wine 0.9.*9*:
~$ wine --version
Wine 0.9.9
isn't 0.9.9 > 0.9.23
So either it's another bug, or it regressed... or I'm misunderstanding something :)
which one? -thanks.

Please read the bug report:
A patch to create the tooltip during the first WM_MOUSEMOVE (as Windows does)
has been commited. You can check in the current Git (or wine 0.9.23 when it is
released) if it works for you too.
So since wine 0.9.23.....
