The installers you mentioned don't use MSI at all, as witness by watching the
emptiness of a +msi,+msidb trace. These installers are calling
SHBrowseForFolder, which isn't doing something correctly. We really need a
wine-shell32 component.

I have been upgrading kernels through dappers lifecycle, but only those issued
through official channels (security fixes etc.).
I had a working setup (v0.9.24) which broke after I upgraded to v0.9.25. The
*only* difference is that I moved the PC into another room. Which would
suggest hardware failures. But no other issue have popped up (been running
various games, opengl-apps, videos, emulators).
It might be hardware, but it's only wine+deusex that seems to trigger it.

That's a bug in shell32. It's missing an implementation for
CLSID_NetworkPlaces. You could probably hack up a stub one, starting from one
of the shlfolder_*.c files in shell32, if you knew what you were doing. It
probably doesn't need to work, it just needs to be instantiable to get the app
from crashing.

Summary: DeusEx blanks the entire screen not just the emulated
desktop - used to work
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.25.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: nospam.nospam(a)mekanix.dk
After I upgraded to 0.9.25 every time I start DeusEx, wine turn the entire
screen black/blank right after the splash-screen.
I'm runnin DeusEx inside a "emulated desktop", so wine shouldn't be able to
blank the *entire* screen (KDE/Fluxbox).
DeusEx seems to be running just fine and I can navigate through the menus etc.
(in blind, since I can't see anything).
I happens for both the OpenGL and Direct3D driver. In safemode/softwarerender
It doesn't blank the screen until I toggle fullscreen.
I've tried switching back and forth between virtual terminals/consoles as
similar bugs seems to suggest but with no luck. Only way to get visuals back
is to exit the KDE-session (ctrl-alt-del).
DeusEx have been running perfectly since v0.9.19 through v0.9.24.
Now, what's really puzzling me is that I have tried to revert to older
versions (0.9.24 , 0.9.23 , 0.9.22) and now they too blanks the screen. I've
deleted ~/.wine several time.
I'm running ubuntu-dapper and is using a matrox G450 card.

I've found a solution: for 'Expert Properties' in 'Strategy Tester' press 'F2'
to edit 'Value', 'F3' to edit 'Start', 'F4' to edit 'Step' and 'F5' to edit
'Stop' fields.
In custom indicators to change the parameters in a custom input box press 'F2'.
Unfortunatly I haven't found a way to change the fields in the 'colors' tab.
I hope this helps. :)

I have removed the registry entry and adjusted the system wide graphics option
(via the NVIDIA utility) to a more performance rather than quality setting. So
far it looks ok and I can't see any difference in quality. I can't test on the
server where I had the problem as it is down for extended maintenance. So when
it comes back up tomorrow I'll retest to see if the tweak on the NVIDIA settings
means I can get away without the registry entry and if that is the cause of the
discolouration.

Wine is set to Win2k, also tried the others (Win9x fails with Java at all...)
The Java app works perfectly with same the setup on Crossover 6.0 beta2.
Must be a error in wine itself, not a missing registry entry i think, because
i tried the registry created by crossover with wine, and it still fails.

I tried with today's CVS version. The first disk installs fine, but then it just
ends by saying "Rayman installed succesfully". In reality it should ask for
disks 2 and 3 and copy their files also.
The process also leaves a process called IDriver.exe in the background, which
has to be killed with kill -9 to get rid of it.

Muhahaha! The patch works. When I try to join a firewalled game, buttons are
being locked as without the patch. But after ~15 seconds, it says that I
probably mistyped the game name, but the game is still there.
I don't know how long it takes in Windows until the error message is being
displayed, but this is a good start!
Can anyone confirm that the patch fixes this? And can anyone find out how long
it takes until the error message appears in Windows when joining a firewalled game?

Try setting oleaut32 to be always builtin. Problems can occur when one
executable is using builtin oleaut32 and one is using native oleaut32,
particularly if they are communicating with each other (since the protocol is
largely undocumented and so they are incompatible).

wink (recommended by http://openlife.eu/post/1/140)
has a Linux version, but I wanted to try the
Windows version under Wine as a test of Wine.
It installed ok, and can render presentations ok
(though you have to hunt for the web browser tab
it launches sometimes), but it can't capture.
The problems start with picking the window to capture
from; it's supposed to notice windows as you mouse over
them, but it doesn't.
This is on Ubuntu dapper using the precompiled Wine-0.9.25
package from winehq.

TomTom Home works surprisingly well under Wine (detects the device and needed
updates) but after downloading the updates from Internet, it doesn't find the
files that it stored in a temporary directory altough the files exists...
This is with current GIT and a clean .wine.
The error message is "can't find .cab file"
I'll attache a +file,+path log that shows what happen with the files.
When the message is shown in the application if you search for these files, they
are found in the correct directory (the files are Ephemeris.cab and

SUCCESS!! I just verified that your patch makes NxView to run with vanilla
2.6.18. My problem was that normally I'm using Ingo Molnar's exec-shield
patch, which causes troubles EVEN when it's disabled with echo 0
>/proc/sys/kernel/exec-shield. Now I patched it totally off and finally it
seems that i can run the program. It looks that current exec-shield patch
causes that kernel ignores the execstack marking. It was on x86_64; I will
check i386 platform later.

Yes I have, and you don't have to download anything. Just rename your .wine
directory and run wineprefixcreate:
/opt/wine/bin/wineprefixcreate: line 171: 17866 Segmentation fault (core
dumped) "${WINELOADER:-$bindir/wine}" rundll32.exe

This fault also goes away when the kernel has noexec disabled, so I hope it is
related to this bug.

patch to wake up select
So far, Jan's theory (that "Test failed: closesocket did not wakeup select" is
responsible) seems the most probable to me. I've run some tests, and on Linux,
this is standard behaviour: if one thread is polling with an infinite timeout,
and another closes one of the sockets being polled, the poll never wakes up
(whether you are using select, poll, or epoll). See
http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/7/14/115 and
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6299188.
This is not a bug, it's a POSIX-compliant feature (see
http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/7/14/225). A possible workaround is to call
shutdown() before close(), which will wake up all selects on that socket.
So try this patch (cd wine-0.9.25; patch -p1 < wakeup_select.patch) and report
how it goes.

Here is enough complex but relatively small program (freeware, 3.2MB):
http://download2.xnview.com/XnView-win.zip
Install it with noexec=off. Then try to run it. It should work perfectly.
Then reboot with noexec=on. Now it should crash at startup because of this bug.
Unfortunately I cannot test the patch right now but I will try it soon and
report about results.

Of course I ran autoconf as well as a full rebuild. And as I wrote, I manually
marked all available ELFs to require executable stack. Maybe there are more
problems with executable areas so the patch is good to fix 6169, but my wife's
favourite app (a monolithic, 222 MB big binary showing interesting historical
places of Prague, running from CD) still fails exactly as without any
execstack handling.

execstack binary manually and set it for every ELF object in the wine
distribution including all .dll.so's, but no change, bug is still there. Maybe
wine tries to execute data sections instead of stack ?

Yeah probably. I can't find any documentation for GdiSwapBuffers, so it's
probably more or less internal to the API.
So what I'm seeing is that SwapBuffers should basically be renamed
GdiSwapBuffers. After that a new SwapBuffers is written to check for use of
OpenGL, if true, calls opengl32.wglSwapBuffers. Else calls GdiSwapBuffers. Then
all we need is opengl32.wglSwapBuffers to call GdiSwapBuffers. And the same
pattern follows for the rest of the wgl/Gdi combos. So I suppose this could be
done after Roderick is finished with moving wgl over to gdi? Of course it should
only be done when we confirm it can take this path. And yes, it might still
import the original gdi functions; I think we only need to be concerned with
what is shown in the opengl32.spec as getting forwarded back to gdi.

I guess the forwarding circus is only needed for those wgl* functions that have
a plain and/or Gdi* counterpart, which would be:
ChoosePixelFormat (plain, wgl)
DescribePixelFormat (plain, wgl, Gdi)
GetPixelFormat (plain, wgl)
SetPixelFormat (plain, wgl, Gdi)
SwapBuffers (plain, wgl, Gdi)
I just also noticed that OpenGL32 imports some of the "plain" APIs as well...
it's really confusing which may call which.

to emulate exact behaviour on the wine side. I do have concern that it
GLIntercept doesn't work on all drivers on windows too.
It's interesting what you say. I'd like to trace the calls on windows to prove
what you say is right. But what about other gdi->wgl calls? Hopefully we don't
have to go there :)

Interestingly, native OpenGL32 imports GdiSwapBuffers. Maybe what's happening is
that GDI32.SwapBuffers calls OpenGL32.wglSwapBuffers, which in turn against
calls GDI32.GdiSwapBuffers? </wild guess> If that'd be adapted to Wine, you'd
get the best of the worlds: SwapBuffers etc. being implemented in GDI32
(architecturally cleaner or some such I presume), but Opengl32 hooks would still
work...

The reason for glIntercept going the way it does is probably simplicity, for
both the user and developer: having a drop-in opengl32.dll makes it easy to
enable/disable glintercept as needed; and the developer does not have the mess
with potentially problematic things like hooking gdi32 function calls.
Why Windows does GDI32->opengl32 I don't entirely know; one reason might be to
ease the life for ICD developers so they have also control about things like
pixel format. Possibly gdi32 doesn't do forwarding alone but wraps the wgl calls
in some way.

But the test passes on Windows. However, I did notice now, that there are errors

remember exactly where. (Sorry, I cannot run more tests on Windows again right

Sorry about that. So what I am to understand is the GLIntercept program works by
overriding opengl32. So you need gdi32 to call opengl32 for the interception to
work, because your app calls the gdi32 version of the functions.
According to OpenGL faq on windows
http://www.opengl.org/resources/faq/technical/mswindows.htm
"5.190 What do I need to know about mixing WGL and GDI calls?
On the Win32 platform a number of platform specific function calls are
duplicated in the OpenGL ICD mechanism and the GDI. This may cause confusion as
they appear to be functionally identical, the only difference being whether wgl
precedes the rest of the function name. To ensure correct operation of OpenGL
use ChoosePixelformat, DescribePixelformat, GetPixelformat, SetPixelformat, and
SwapBuffers, instead of the wgl equivalents, wglChoosePixelformat,
wglDescribePixelformat, wglGetPixelformat, wglSetPixelformat, and
wglSwapBuffers. In all other cases use the wgl function where available. Using
the five wgl functions is only of interest to developers run-time linking to an
OpenGL driver. Not using the functions as described may result in a black OpenGL
window, or a correctly functioning application in Windows 9x that produces a
black OpenGL window on Windows NT/2000."
Their recommendation is to have an app use the gdi version of the opengl
functions to make sure it will always work properly. This might go as well for
the the GLIntercept program (I only see wgl* in the source code btw). This
dependence on wgl by the program might be a design mistake?
What's worse is that the current goal for wgl is to make it routed through gdi.
I don't think this problem will be fixed for you. I think you will need to
override gdi itself, or write a new tool. Although you could just fork wine's
gdi to provide the functionality you want.

I tried to override secur32.dll to get around this, but when I do I get a
message from FolderShare saying: "FolderShare could not initialize its

or you may need to reinstall FolderShare." When overriding sercur32.dll I do
not get as far as I would otherwise and the program crashes before any of the

I've attached my output from running "WINEDEBUG=err+all, fixme+all, warn+all wine

Any suggestions on how I might be able to get the native version of secur32 to
work?

Unfortunately I did not notice any improvement in wine-0.9.25. It seems as if
this problem is quite specific to my hardware- and driver-configuration. Sadly
the ALSA devs couldn't help me either. I posted on their bugtracker two months
ago but haven't gotten any constructive replies.

This is an intel compatible device, and uses the same driver you do under the
same ubuntu install. It works fine using the ALSA driver setting. Wine should
not discriminate against any hardware device. So I still suspect a driver issue.
Likewise, I experience no crash using ALSA like bug 5390. However, our ALSA
driver is not perfect either. But there are obviously compatibility issues out
there with the game and certain hardware.

I had the ALSA driver and only the ALSA driver checked in winecfg when I was

Unchecking this driver and either using no sound or the OSS driver works normally.
I really wish this weren't an ALSA problem, but it apparently is. Oh well. :(

Unfortunately I suspect Vitaliy is right. It's probably hardware or alsa
related. This is because I encountered no trouble with *almost* the same specs;
just not in hardware right now. That said, I do have an intel compatible sound
device in my computer so I will switch to it and see what happens.

I did read the patches, and unless there's an off by one allocation error I'm

everything but floating point now looks safe. This bug could probably be
considered resolved until evidence to the contrary is found.

Reopening because this is a bug, Vitaliy - nothing except Wine has a problem
using my sound, and the OSS wrapper for ALSA has no problem in the world with
using my sound device, so this is either brokenness in my ALSA config which
*ONLY* wine demonstrates, or wine is broken.
I really suspect it's the latter rather than the former, but if you think
otherwise, feel free to demonstrate a fix which results in this working
perfectly using ALSA.

Hi, a fix has been committed for better buffer handling. The patch did not
really address floating point for a couple of reasons. One I don't have a test
case :) and two, floating point really needs its own over-haul because the
output is wrong. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Check out what has
been done to see if it addresses everything else you were talking about.

Try adding the following:
else if (IsBadReadPtr(srcPtr, physDevSrc->bitmap->base, bytesToCopy))
dump_bmp_info(&srcDib, &dstDib, xSrc, ySrc, xDst, yDst, width, height);
else if (IsBadWritePtr(dstPtr, physDevDst->bitmap->base, bytesToCopy))
dump_bmp_info(&srcDib, &dstDib, xSrc, ySrc, xDst, yDst, width, height);
in the if-ladder leading up to:
else
memcpy(.....);
in the function called something like X11DRV_ClientSideDIBCopy
in the file dlls/winex11.drv/bitblt.c
Sorry I can't make a patch for this now, you'd have to wait till tomorrow.
Post the output (don't use WINEDEBUG, it should print out FIXME's).

Oh dear, I found the problem. I toggled off my sound driver in winecfg (ALSA was
the only one enabled), problem resolved - WC3 warned me that it couldn't init
the sound device, but it worked fine otherwise. lsof | grep snd and lsof | grep
dsp don't think anything is using the sound device.

Summary: wine says I have buggy libXrender, but libXrender in x11
works OK
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.23.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: wine(a)staznosti.sk
this is the output of wine:
bash-3.1# wine "C:\Program Files\IrfanView\i_view32.exe"
Wine has detected that you probably have a buggy version
of libXrender.so . Because of this client side font rendering
will be disabled. Please upgrade this library.

of course, I don't have any problems with X or libXrender except of that with wine.

------- Additional Comments From Rincebrain(a)gmail.com 2006-14-11 02:31 -------
Just for reference, using the 1.0-9629 driver, I tried the following xorg.conf
settings:
I had AIGLX explicitly enabled, I disabled it (Option "AIGLX" "false") - no change
I had Option "TripleBuffer" "true" passed to the nvidia driver - I disabled it -
no change
I had Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true" passed to the screen - I disabled it -
no change
I had Option "Composite" "Enable" passed in the Extensions section - I disabled
it - no change
I even tried changing DefaultDepth from 24 to 16 (as wine output warned of not
being able to change to depth 16) - no change other than removing those warnings.
I may try the 8xxx driver when I have more free time, but I don't have that time
right now.

Open any picture then try to save it as a PNG file.
Then press "Save As ..." button again, and click "Show options dialog" check
box. Nothing will happen although a new window with PNG format options should
appear.
