Patch applied against the latest git revision, using gcc 4.1.1 under Fedora Core 6.
emule is now running under this version for more than two hours, using the same
wrapper as above. See the attached graph : the number of "leaked" handles is
always < 20 ! These handles are not leaked ones : they refer to previous
connections not held by the app but in closing state (TIME_WAIT, LAST_ACK,
etc.), as reported by netstat. This is plain normal behaviour.
The patch seems to entirely fix the bug, nice work Alexandre, select() was
guilty, bien vu ! :)

I can confirm similar problem occurs on FC6 with xorg 7.1. I was running 0.9.24
and got the following error message even just run winecfg
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7e8dd080 "x11drv_main.c:
X11DRV_CritSection" wait timed out in thread 000c, blocked by 000b, retrying (60
sec)
This seems to occur for both proprietary 'nvidia' and free 'nv' drivers. An
interesting note is that there's no such problem if run wine as root. The
problem seems only show up for normal users.
My current solution is to downgrade to 0.9.22 which doesn't exhibit such problem
even for normal users.

Well, I was thinking more something along the lines of:
FIXME("resourceList %p\n", resourceList);
right at the start of the while loop. Basically see if there's anything
recognisable in there.

trace patch
Henri wants you to edit the source and add trace calls. This patch is what I
would do. You don't have to have +d3d to get a log with the extra information,
but the problem may be consistancy still. If you crash somewhere else, any
resulting log may be confusing. So try things out, make sure the crash is
consistant, and also use +seh for the next time (won't slow things down).

Interesting.
I'm using Google Sketchup program (free to download and educational use at:
sketchup.google.com).
When you change the command, the icon change.
The problem is, when Wine is running as WindowsXP or Windows 2000, the cursor
don't change and a message appear:
"fixme:cursor:create_cursor Currently no support for cursors with 32 bits per
pixel"
But if I run the Wine as Windows 2003, or 98, the cursor change.
Change to what? Well, is something like the alpha mask (or channel) of the
correct cursor.
Unfortunatelly I'm using Ubuntu, and cannot screenshot with cursor. But please
download Google Sketchup and try it, maybe can help this bug too.
Regards, and sorry the english

How would I go about doing that? I know how to do d3d, but how do I set
traces for specific function calls?
When I'm doing the trace can I omit d3d? It might help ensure a good crash
and prevent too much slowdown.

I wrapped emule using a shell script, which was logging each 30 seconds the
number of leaked handles left by emule.exe, which is basically given by :
lsof -nc emule.exe | grep "identify protocol" | wc -l
Here is an example of a matching line :
emule.exe 15308 speed 277u sock 0,5 56127 can't identify protocol
The leaked handles are always sockets. I've attached two graphs that show the
number of leaked handles growing with time. The graph stops where emule stopped
working, complaining that too many files were open, and wine flooding the
console with :
fixme:winsock:NtStatusToWSAError Status code c000011f converted to DOS error code 4
118877 lines like the one above where logged before my wrapper detected the
problem and killed emule, and as it checked each 30 seconds for messages like
the one above, we can tell that we had at least ~4.000 messages per second being
printed to the console.
The second graph is a zoom of the first one, just to show that sometimes, the
number of leaked handles does go down a bit. We know have to find out why.

who is maintaining it. I suggest sending the arts patch to your distro package

It looks like it crashes in IWineD3DDeviceImpl_RemoveResource, in the part of
the code that walks through the list:
while (resourceList != NULL) {
if(resourceList->resource == resource) break;
previousResourceList = resourceList;
resourceList = resourceList->next;
}
You could try adding a couple more TRACEs in there (resourceList->next is
probably usefull to know), but it's likely just the result of something writing
over some memory at another place in the code. Adding a +seh could possibly give
more information.
Wrt this bug: please note that debugging random crashes, heap corruption, etc is
simply hard, even more so when doing it without having the actual application
available yourself.

sorry, I thought that was obvious. I manually added "-lglu32" to the CXXFLAGS

client-side DIB copy patch, v4
I've made and submitted a new patch, this one does even less (just to be safe),
so hopefully it will get accepted.
Since this patch makes Heroes 4 run quickly, I would advise closing this bug if
the patch is accepted, and sending all DIB-engine related requests to bug 421.
I'll be posting some comments in that bug in a minute.
Please note once again (people have been mailing me about this) that this patch
only helps if the application in question currently prints out "potential
optimization - client-side DIB copy". It doesn't do a thing otherwise.

No I did not. I can try installing IE to see if that solves the problem. I'm
just wondering why there's different prerequisites for the exe and msi-based
installers. From my understanding, oftentimes the exe-based installer is just a
wrapper for the msi-based installer.

Summary: CTR, ALT, SHIFT Generating garbage in textfields in Saga
Of Ryzom
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.23.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-dinput
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: zyrom(a)itr.no
The ctrl, shift and alt keys generates garbage in text field in this game.
It seems to be related to dinput, since if disabling dinput the ctrl, alt, shift
keys does not produce garbage, but this will also change the mouse behaveour
and is not an option.
It is also related to autorepeat, firstly because garbage is autorepeated,
and secondly because up until 0.9.17 it was possible to use
"xset r <key_code>" for each of the offending keys before starting the game
to get around this behaveour, it only worked if the env. var LANG was set
to "en_US" though. This workaround stopped working somewere after 0.9.17 (not
tested with 0.9.1[89]) and is still broken in 0.9.23/24.

Half of the bug seem to be fixed in Wine 0.9.23 and 0.9.24 since now I can see
the main menu like it used to be when using nVidia drivers(with registry
combiners) but bad thing is when starting game screen where it should play some
begin story using game own engine is black... and then I got some surface errors
and screen stays black. this black screen thing seems also happen because of
that same patch that caused the white screen thing.

Since you seem to get the crashes occuring on flights try the following.
- Position yourself next to the flight master
- restart the game with WINEDEBUG=+d3d (yes I know it is slow)
- pick the longest flight journey you can find
- either sit there and watch or go do something else, checking back
occasionally to see if it has crashed
- if you reach the other end of the journey just go back the other way
It is boring, very dull to watch and could well take a couple of hours to do
but if you can get a crash with the d3d debug channel in place then hopefully
the wine developers will have more to go on.

Wine should probably come up with a fix that doesn't
require this workaround, but:
The appdb entry for call of duty 1.5 mentions
that umount -l can be used to force the
cdrom to be unmounted even though something's
still open on it:
http://appdb.winehq.org/commentview.php?iAppId=1346&iVersionId=3603&iThread…
(The question is, can this workaround be made
easy for users. That's probably a Linux distribution
quality-of-implementation issue.)
The guy who mentioned this even wrote a Loki
installer script to get Call of Duty to
install under Wine. Woot...

Ever thought that I'm including the last few lines to ensure that if it does end

The last log I posted is a whopping THREE LINES short and contains not a single

The "debug channels" prevent the bug from happening.
Why do you refuse to acknowledge this?
I've been submitting bugs for more than four years and I know for a fact that
everything I say gets ignored in an attempt to de-prioritize my submission.
So here we are with a new account of this bug. It is present on THREE
architecturally different machines of mine. (Tested on laptop, problem exists
there as well).
I've given all that I can about the problem. It seems to be related to large
areas. Cities, outdoors. Anything that causes rather chaotic loading of
information from the HDD to draw in horizons.
So, just in case you're one of the simpletons who only replies to the last
paragraph of a message: Increasing log output and sustaining a drop in speed
prevents the bug from occuring.

You may want to submit the document to wine-devel(a)winehq.org. There are many
Direct3D experts there so maybe they also know DirectShow.

I can confirm I also get this intermittent hang.. in D3D mode. Eversince the
year dot i've used opengl mode ( which with the registry edit
DiasabledExtensions ) I do find to be slightly faster and smoother than D3D.
In don't have any further data on this but my initial thoughts are that it's
only in d3d the problem happens. I'm going to switch back to opengl for a time
and see if the problem appears consistently in that mode. I'm gonna stick my
neck out 7 say that I think it's probably a d3d problem only.
I do have the flicker patch installed (even though I don't need it as I'm using
ATI) and the registry edit and the wgl_init patch.
I'll need to clean all this stuff out so I've got a standard 0.9.24 to makesure
they don't contribute to the problem. (I don't think they do but you never know).
This may take the devs a while to track down, I played the game for about an
hour last night before it hung.
Regards
Nick

>> You should not step through MS code with a debugger! AFAIK this can be
interpretted as stealing their trade secrets or something like that.
Formally - you are probably right, on the other hand the return value has been
documented, so it can't be stolen. Or it is already stolen by testing it.
I will do the following: put my considerations on filtergraph.c code on a single
document and submit it here or to the mailing list. The point is that not only
obvious changes like releasing an interface pointer before the function returns
might be possible .
That's why I was looking for the maintainer - to be able to discuss the things
that are not obvious (for me as well). It would be nice to be able to write some
code and say "here is the exact (or better) implementation of the DirectShow",
unfortunately it is not realistic (for me, at least). By the way, I believe the
DirectShow to be quite a murky area, although it is far not new, many people
work with it (often simply changing Microsoft samples according to their needs
and hoping that it will somehow work) and seems even to be at the end of its
development - Media Foundation is to come with Vista and I personally doubt that
DirectShow will be developed further.

We go to some trouble to not hold fds on removeable media. Wine does chdir("/")
when initializing a process, so that we don't keep the current directory open,
and when mapping an exe, a copy of the exe is created first.
Perhaps the process is opening its own exe for some reason?

He was talking about WoW's use of OpenGL. There is a slight difference. He
didn't say you should use D3D -- you made that choice. The reason why everyone
says you should use OpenGL is because OpenGL is already an actual native
graphics system (minus wgl) and that our D3D essentially wraps back to OpenGL.
You are creating more overhead and possibly encountering more bugs that way by
using D3D.
One last statement: you're not going anywhere because of your attitude. I've
never seen anyone here before over the past four years plainly ignoring any
suggestions presented. The logs are useless, and conflicting, so that no one
really knows what the true problem is. You need to research it and narrow
something down using the various debug channels. And you only call it a joke. So
you're not going to get anything back from us.

I'd like to do the regression test. Unfortunately configure can't find OpenGL or
FreeType when I build directly from source instead of through portage. Until I
get that straightened out I can only test by editing the local ebuild to add
patches to the released wine source package.

Excuse me, but with a flicker bug present in OpenGL with only a workaround
patch, I think it is important.
Don't just go reinterpreting things because you have a snotty agenda over not
being able to read my original log report.
Consequently, in the OpenGL crowd, I've been told that WoW has very poor OGL
functionality and that efforts would be better spent optimizing D3D performance.

"But if you use the NVIDIA patch, the registry entry for the ATI stuff and run in
opengl mode you can at least play the game without (hopefully) the random
crashing. "
Much of what I'm doing is to begin encouraging my friends to consider linux over
the next six months. Not very encouraging to still see workarounds that involve
patching source. I'm trying to help the wine effort first, then play WoW
second. (I'm playing a character from 1 to 60/70 in wine to cover as much as
possible too!)
"You say it is obvious from the command line that you are running in
D3D mode, I could enter the same command line and run in opengl because I have
an entry in the config.wtf that forces that mode."
Well lickety split and look at you. Butter wouldn't melt in YOUR mouth, would
it now?
"Sure it is not ideal (though there are many that would argue that opengl mode is
faster than d3d mode) but remember you are running a program designed for one
operating system on a completely different one and, best will in the world, wine
will never be able to run all windows software perfectly, even windows can't
manage that."
...What on Earth are you going on about? I just want to provide bug information
here. Which I think I've begun to do, let somebody who knows see it. Let
somebody in D3D go, "let's come up with a way to debug effectively". Then I'll
ride the flight paths back and forth until the game crashes...mmkay?
This bug seems to manifest itself most often when I'm on flight paths. Probably
supports my "only in wide wide open areas with long horizons" theory. The speed
of movement of the flying mounts probably forces the problem.
"If you want to hurl abuse at people who trying to help you that is your decision
but all you are doing is hurting your cause. I offered to help but you don't
want my help fine by me."
You know what. If you want to lecture someone on things he already knows about,
go teach in a community college. All I'm trying to do is get this bug fixed so
that I can move on to the next. It'd be nice if helping didn't require me to
pull teeth.

You should not step through MS code with a debugger! AFAIK this can be
interpretted as stealing their trade secrets or something like that.
Checking the return code is the good start however if it's simple to make a
testcase it's better. This is a good candidate for a first patch and including a
testcase will make nearly 100% sure it will get accepted (except if you make a
formal mistake - e.g. C++ comments, two patches in one mail, L"String" etc.).
Adding a test is easy. Try to copy the dlls/quartz/tests/filtergraph.c and
include/wine/test.c to a Windows drive add a #define STANDALONE on the top of
filtergraphs. After maybe some fidling with include paths it should compile.
According to http://test.winehq.org/data all tests should pass i.e. the console
should be empty. Add a test that checks the return value and check that it
passes. Now copy the new code to dlls/quartz/tests/filetergraph.c and run "make
test" in dlls/quartz/tests. The test should fail (output on the console, return
1 to make will stop it) but after modifing the return value it should pass. And
you have the material for a patch.
All the tests are also automatically build in programs/winetests as *.exe files
and can be copied to Windows. However it's not practical if you want to make
changes in the code.

Hi,
Actually I just downloaded the Wine sources, and making some study. Establishing
building/testing environment will certainly take some time.
>>The MSDN also can't be 100% trusted as sometimes it's wrong.
That's true. I performed a test on Windows with the Microsoft GraphBuilder and
it really returned VFW_E_NOT_FOUND value. Stepping through the Microsoft's
implementation in the debugger also tells me that it can hardly be otherwise.

I'm afraid on one maintains the quartz.dll as it seems the last updates were
more than one year ago (but maybe I'm wrong and someone will correct me). The
MSDN also can't be 100% trusted as sometimes it's wrong.
The best way it to write a test case and it seems to be easly doable in this
case. Try to compile the quartz test under Windows (#define STANDALONE if you
want to compile only one file) add some function that runs (if I understand it
right):
... create an GraphBuiler ...
ret = IGraphBuilder_FindByName(iface, some garbage name, &out);
ok(ret == VFW_E_NOT_FOUND, "IGraphBuilder_FindByName returned %x, expected
VFW_E_NOT_FOUND", ret);
.. release the GraphBuilder ...
If it passed under Windows change the return value so that it passes under wine.
Then create a patch with both the test and the change and send it to
wine-patches(a)winehq.org . If the patches meets all the formal requirements I'd
expect it will be commited to the wine Git and will appear on
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-cvs/2006-November/thread.html .
Some requirements for patches are on http://www.winehq.org/site/sending_patches
. Another you might need to know for this patch is that in wine you must not use
L"Text" to create a widecharacter string as this don't work on some old
compilers. Instead need to declare the string as WCHAR string[] =
{'T','e','x','t',0}.

Hello
The GraphBuilder_FindFilterByName function in the filtergraph.c file
(quartz.dll) returns E_FAIL if a matching filter was not found. According to the
Microsoft docs at
http://windowssdk.msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms785733.aspx it should
return VFW_E_NOT_FOUND.
Instead of writing such reports I could simply submit the fixed (great fix -
replacing one return value with another :) - still, the specification exists -
it's better to conform it, especially if it is not difficult :)) code but have
no idea how to do that.
Does someone maintains the quartz.dll sources? I suppose there are some parts of
the code that could probably be improved - but those things certainly require
some discussion.
Best regards
Denis Linine

And to answer the insultingly obvious "duh" questions:
So do you run in opengl or d3d?
See the command line. D3D. In OpenGL there is a flicker bug for NVidia, and
ATI cards crash HARD. I do not wish to use registry tweaks or workarounds to
get the game working. The whole idea is to get these bugs solved.
Have you tried the latest git version?
Yes .23, yes .24
Do you add anything to the ./configure command line?
--prefix=/home/[username]/wine
Where do you get the source code from?

To both of you.
Read my first post, all your answers as there. Why don't you pay attention to
me instead of using your knee-jerk reflexes to dismiss what in your eyes is "yet
another moron posting bugs".
I think " * Launched using: "wine 'C:\Program Files\World of
Warcraft\Launcher.exe'" " is enough to answer your questions thus far. Again,
I've already provided bug reports, been bopped on the head by arrogant bug
wardens and have produced my own bug reporting templates. My guess is this is
obviously not enough. I can continue to post my crash logs, I can continue to
provide the results of WoW's crash-catcher...
As for adding +d3d debug - that's a joke. I ran the game for all of four
minutes before realizing the problem would not reproduce and also that I had
accumulated over 100MB of data on my hard drive. The game was beyond unplayable
and I think the slowdown is likely enough to prevent the bug from occuring.
Adding d3d for debugging is unacceptable for tracing the problem at this point.
Especially given that some of my posted logs so far contain information
denoting a crash.
The only update I can provide is that I'm now using the latest 0.9.24 version of
Wine on all my machines and the problem is still present.
This is getting ridiculous.

Alexander, you really need to approach this bug differently. You should see this
as a support request for you. You aren't helping anyone else by doing what you
are doing. Alan is now asking for more information, and it all is pretty
elementary because he doesn't understand mostly anything about it. Just like in
my emails to you, and my original response, you need to fix the summary of this
report and provide better information. You still have not indicated at all
whether this is only a d3d problem. I asked you to do this three times now.
Don't blow *us* off. I still don't know if this is only *one* problem described
here either.
The purpose of the WINEDEBUG=+d3d is to gather more information. No you don't
have to spend time to decipher it. I'm not saying you are supposed to learn how
to hack wine either. If you are able to get a log, just post it like I asked. I
still take it you haven't read the guide of the link I posted. It talks about
debug channels and controlling debug output. Yes, it will slow down the game,
and you'll have to suffer through it and learn how to control it enough to
gather some information. Considering the nature of the bug, it will be difficult
to gather information, but we depend on you to provide enough because you are
the reporter. This bug will continue to remain how it is until you start
responding to requests.

I'm not one of the wine developers but I use WoW on Ubuntu so I'll try to help.
Which repository did you download wine from?
If it was the base Ubuntu one, try this place (in your /etc/apt/source.list)
deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt edgy main
deb-src http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt edgy main
If you are running an unaltered version of wine (ie no patches) then on your
NVIDIA box you should get a horrible flicker (especially indoors). I don't know
about ATI as I don't have an ATI card.
Have you tried using the latest version of wine from GIT?
If not try that as it has fixed a couple of problems with wine since 0.9.24 came
out.
Do you run in opengl or d3d mode? OpenGL seems to work better but suffers from
the flicker problem (though there is an easy fix for that listed on the WoW
AppDB page).
Finally, yes it is annoying when a program doesn't work properly but the wine
developers have a lot of bugs and other stuff to do so can't always dedicate
100% of their time to one problem. WoW has got a fair sized user base and the
WoW AppDB pages contain a lot of information about getting things working under
wine.

Another point is with "WINEDEBUG=+d3d", the game is totally unplayable.
This is with stderr redirected and also not redirected.
This problem occurs most often while I'm outside or somewhere with a "long
horizon". So -- not indoors or in an instance of any type.

Obviously if I were enough of an expert to fix or properly diagnose the problem,
I would have.
As I don't spend much time reverse engineering MS apis and win32, I'm at a bit
of a disadvantage.
The least I'd have liked is perhaps someone to come on and talk more about it.
But I guess everything that isn't immediately obvious is a waste of time... God
I hate trying to help people with bug reports, I always get blown off. And
this time it really sucks because it affects me in such a way that I wish it didn't.

A patch to fix the buttons height has been commited to the current Git and will
be available in wine starting from version 0.9.25. Could you check if it works
for you? You might need to move the toolbar band from vertical to horizontal and
back again to enforce the recomputation of the height.

Patch to prevent wine-loader compiling with stack-protection on
Your patch correctly detects if the -fno-stack-protector flag is needed but
applied it in the wrong place. I've modified your patch to make the flag active
where it needs to be and have tested it against 0.9.24 (after doing an autoconf
after applying the patch).

Patches fixing it have been commited to Git and will be included in wine 0.9.25.
(currently WinRAR doesn't start on an unpatched wine because of bug #3573 but I
see there is some work to change it).

I have this problem too... it appeared in either .23 or .22 I think, however
strange thing is on what are apparently two identical systems, one has the
problem and the other doesn't. Both are running .24 but with different versions
of the ATI driver. I need to update the drivers and see if that has any effect.
System Specs :
CPU/RAM : Pentium 4 3.0GHz/1GByte
GraphicsCard/Driver : ATI 9550-256Mbyte /8.28.08
Wine : 0.9.24 non standard release, wow flicker patch applied
DisabledExtensions key added to Regedit for SPEED and to correct corrupt text.
KDE 3.4

I've cleaned up many of the Nx1 assumptions in the code, which should make
switching to a Nx4 easier... patches to do that should be on their way soon.

I am currently using CrossOver 6.0 Beta 2. I am very happy with the
results. Pegasus starts perfect ( with wine I could not see the initial window
though it was there that lets you introduce the account name), and no menu
options were missing ( with wine you had to use the "-Z 128" option).
There is still a problem consisting in the program closing in some cases when
changing from one window to another but there is no data loss.
Quite an improvement.

Summary: Rollercoaster Tycoon2 fails to start with Unsupported
IOctl error
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.22.
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-loader
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: nightmorph(a)gentoo.org
Attempted to install RCT2 on Gentoo Linux/AMD64 (w/conservative CFLAGS:
-march=k8 -O2). Installation proceeded normally; no problems there. However,
Wine quits when I try to run it, and it looks like it's having a terrible time
with the CD drive, which is a standard DVD+-RW/CDRW drive known to work well
with every other OS and program on the planet, so there's no chance it's a
hardware failure. Error log is attached.
