The first time I ran the program it locked up so I selected a cartridge and restarted that at least allowed me to get a little further, slowly, but then died after displaying a tiny version of the game board in the upper right hand corner of the window. "Entering directory /home/... Nothing to do for all leaving directory". Ubuntu uses sudo, so no root password can be entered. All the recommended packages have been successfully installed, and verified vith ./configure --verbose. No error messages have been seen during the ./configure, make depend and make commands. I am under a newly installed Kubuntu Edy Eft, with no major changes made on it. This misbehavior doesn't happen at startup, you have to leave or enter any directory at least once. This bug was introduced around Wine version 0.9.12. There are no versions of wine between 0.9.9 and 0.9.22 as Gentoo ebuilds. Looks like the dcom 'update' broke the 0.9.9 install too. winecfg and wine don't work at all now. The old ATI flickering problem was simply a flicker possibly with a frequency of 2hz or less that only appeared under the chat area located bottom left of the screen, it really was fairly minor but annoying if you like things to be perfect. the Nvidia flickering problem, is as I understand it the whole screen or things in the distance ( please correct me if I'm wrong as I've never seem this first hand ). My apologies for not keeping strictly to the bug in question but... All together, as of 0.9.23 there are 4 major video issues that seem to have appeared about the time the code got moved to winex11.drv, although there may not be a connection. ATI 9550 cards and presumably 8500 series and upwards.... 1. A loss of text or text that appears to be torn, fixed by using the DisabledExtentions registry entry. It repeatedly calls FindFirstFile() to check all the files, but forgets to do a FindClose() to free the allocated handles. The FindFirstFile() call does a NtCreateFile() which asks the wineserver process to open a file, thus allocating a file descriptor.. after 1024 of those, the wineserver will run out of filedescriptors and the open will fail (unfortunately, the wineserver doesnt report this). Possible workaround is to bump the file descriptor limit of the process. The patcher alone needs about 26000 file descriptors. After a failed attempt to run WoW in wine (forgot to apply nvidia patch and flickered) my screen resolution was bumped up to 1280x1024, refresh rate was bumped up from 60hz to 85hz, and now 85hz is the "only" refresh rate available to me. Even after uninstalling wine, uninstalling/reinstalling my nvidia driver and reconfiguring xorg, this does not change. I had on board uni chrome and had no cursor when drawing nets. I added a $35 nvidia FX5200 and the problem went away. I am also not using -opengl on the command line when invoking wine. The game will now render the in-game graphics correctly but the text is messed up. Also, my xfce panels render on top of the game, which is annoying but probably fixable. I tried deleting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wine\OpenGL\DisabledExtensions and running the game. Also, I tried setting it to GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object and GL_ARB_vertex_program. None of the above affected the rendered text. I didn't think these would make a difference as they probably don't come into play if you aren't using OpenGL in WoW. I installed WoW via the trial installer. Installed the two patches required (without using the blizzard downloader.) I made some changes to the Config.wtf per the howto on the appdb page: SET gxApi "opengl" //forces wow to run in opengl without having to append --opengl to wow.exe SET ffxDeath "0" I tried applying the two suggested registry settings one at a time. I also tried without this registry key first. I set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wine\OpenGL to GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object and GL_ARB_vertex_program In the case of no registry key, and both of the above values, text always rendered correctly but there was always flickering and it never rendered and of the real game graphics (just menus, interface elements, etc.) I haven't tried the patch to 0.9.23 that's supposed to fix this. After getting rid of the CD check I can start the game and actually play. I'll attach a screenshot (and yeah, my gnome is old enough to have that fullscreen bug). Framerate, however, is extremely lousy. Something like 5 fps or so. I don't see obvious rendering artifacts, although I didn't leave that starting room yet ;) Sound is stuttering like mad, too - but that's normal for games running at this framerate...
