-When doing the "sudo make uninstall" command, an error occurs at the end of

-Then, during the "make" process, it seems that nothing is done (a screenshot

Maybe this can explain my bug ...

Fairly easy fix for this when your run ./configure run it like this:
./configure CFLAGS=-fno-stack-protector
The default under *ubuntu is for the stack protector flag to be enabled which
causes the wine preloader to crash, turn it off and wine compiles fine and works
without any noticable problems.

Wine crashes your system because your system has a problem. You should report
the problem as a bug in your distribution. This is not a Wine problem, because
systems should not be crashable by user software.

How do I do that? I assume that I use winedbg, but how do I identify the thread
which is hung up? I'm semi-familiar with gdb on Un*x but I have no experience
with winedbg and no experience debugging (or programming really) in Windows-land
either.

Most likely the XInitThreads change. You should get a backtrace of the hanging

previous versions of Microsoft Windows. If the function fails for any other

If change return value to -1 instead of 0, it doesn't crash anymore, prints a

Bugs usually require an application to test and verify. For some programs,
simply returning TRUE might make the program work.
Since you're presumably a programmer, and you want to use Wine to support your
(unknown) application, how about having a go at fixing it yourself?

Startup fails unless you have a sound device, so

I'll have to test 0.9.8 some day. There are no versions of wine between 0.9.9

shows up on the root window instead of inside of the application window as it is

First of all, there are much more messages printed by wine right out of the
box. Second of all, it's evident that a seh stack overflow occurs which follows
by a deadlock of some thread(s).
Attached is the output of
$ ~/apps/wine_latest/wine explorer /desktop=foo,640x480
C:\\dk2demo\\DK2Demo.exe 2>&1 | tee wine.out
plus I added some wineserver messages that got printed on the console but not
into the file (for some reason).
Also, here is another registration free download link to the demo:

is it a problem on starting the app and that the problem is fixed. (And the game
has long worked.) Resolving fixed. Other problems just file new bugs.

That could be the 0.9.16 patch ( see the old archives section of the Wow AppDB
page, although I'm by no means certain that is the patch or whether it got
applied to the wine tree ), however I think we are talking about two different
problems here that have been labelled with the same name 'flickering problem'.
The old ATI flickering problem was simply a flicker possibly with a frequency of
2hz or less that only appeared under the chat area located bottom left of the
screen, it really was fairly minor but annoying if you like things to be perfect.
the Nvidia flickering problem, is as I understand it the whole screen or things
in the distance ( please correct me if I'm wrong as I've never seem this first
hand ).
My apologies for not keeping strictly to the bug in question but...
All together, as of 0.9.23 there are 4 major video issues that seem to have
appeared about the time the code got moved to winex11.drv, although there may
not be a connection.
ATI 9550 cards and presumably 8500 series and upwards....
1. A loss of text or text that appears to be torn, fixed by using the
DisabledExtentions registry entry. Here's what it looks like
http://appdb.winehq.org/appimage.php?iId=3948
2. Minimap turns white ( ATI only ? )
3. Nvidia flicker
Anyway, I'm going to try out wow with 0.9.24 standard unpatched and document
everything that's wrong, then what fixes it. ( at least with an ATI 9550 ).

Hi Alexander,
The last comment about ATI cards causing wow to crash hard is not strictly true.
I have an ATI 9550 an my system and I've never seen wow crash.
Either the crashing is specific to the X series ATI cards or some other reason.
The only problem I see with my 9550 is the minimap turn white when I go inside a
building, as soon as I exit the building it's back to normal.
This is in opengl not direct3D

One thing to note, there is a tricky process to switching disk in Unix. If
you're current directory in bash is the directory of the cdrom, the kernel
thinks there's a hold on the cdrom and it won't let you eject, so you have to
follow these steps when running an install:
1) cd /media/cdrom
2) wine setup.exe & (<-- the & is important so you can cd out of the cdrom directory
3) cd / (anywhere but the cdrom directory)
4) wine eject (when it asks for the next disk)
5) winecfg (you might have to setup up the cdrom drive in winecfg->drives if you
don't have the right version of hal)
6) Press 'Retry'

Summary: Some installers can overwrite the ELF regsvr32 binary
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified

Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: mike(a)plan99.net
If Wine is installed to a user-writable location, some installers (*cough*ie6)
will happily blow away the native ELFDLL binary and replace it with a PE binary.
Wine doesn't expect this and generates a message about it being corrupted when
an app tries to use it.
Ideally, we should either
a] prevent Windows apps from overwriting certain protected binaries
b] fix the Wine loader so if it finds a PE binary with a .exe.so name, it can
still load it

No, OpenGL should be faster and more complete. All our D3D stuff does in the end
is translate the calls back into OpenGL. That means there is an overhead. OpenGL
should be used when there is the alternative. The flickering problem should be
resolved if it's not a game bug.

Hi, i wonder what wine version you are using. This function is at least in
current wine implemented as stub, so there shouldnt be a call to 'unimplemented
function' at all. Please upgrade to current wine if you haven't done so already.
Furthermore Hans Leideiker has once sent in this implementation:

This hasn't made it into git, maybe you could try if it helps .

------- Additional Comments From davedom(a)optonline.net 2006-26-10 21:35 -------
This issue seems to be caused by a bug in the patcher. It repeatedly calls
FindFirstFile() to check all the files, but forgets to do a FindClose() to free
the allocated handles.
The FindFirstFile() call does a NtCreateFile() which asks the wineserver process
to open a file, thus allocating a file descriptor.. after 1024 of those, the
wineserver will run out of filedescriptors and the open will fail
(unfortunately, the wineserver doesnt report this).
Possible workaround is to bump the file descriptor limit of the process. The
patcher alone needs about 26000 file descriptors.
Using 'ulimit -n 50000' I was able to get to the Play prompt of the patcher.

I was just reading about a correction on this bug, but I can't find where I saw
it. The issue seemed to be a bug in the patcher. the patcher Opens all the
files, but does not close them. It seems the limit for open file descriptors is
too small for daoc to work (1024 seems to come to mind) where as ya need 20,000?
to open all the daoc files.

I've noticed this on several different distributions(Mandriva 2005 LE, Mandriva
2006, Fedora Core 4, Fedora Core 5, Ubuntu 6.10), and just now realized that
wine was the problem. I had no issues with my video card/display driver. All
of the settings I gave were completely operational and all proper refresh rates
were selectable. After a failed attempt to run WoW in wine (forgot to apply
nvidia patch and flickered) my screen resolution was bumped up to 1280x1024,
refresh rate was bumped up from 60hz to 85hz, and now 85hz is the "only" refresh
rate available to me. Even after uninstalling wine, uninstalling/reinstalling
my nvidia driver and reconfiguring xorg, this does not change. This has
occurred with many different versions of wine, the latest being 0.9.22.

I am testing IBM Workstation APL2 for Multiplatforms Service Level 9 using
Wine under SuSE 10.1. APL2's session manager uses GetFontUnicodeRanges to
determine whether the font selected by the user contains glyphs for the APL
codepoints as defined by Unicode. This API is the only reliable way to
acquire this information. (I am the developer and I have verified this fact
with Microsoft.)
Since APL2 uses this API during initialization, this deficiency makes it
impossible to use APL2 service level 9 under Wine. I have configured Wine to
emulate Windows XP (which contains this API.)
I have a patch which bypasses use of the API, but the patch precludes use of
fonts which contain glyphs for the APL characters at the Uniocde codepoints.
I can supply the debug information dumped by wine when the error occurs.
(I do not know how to create an attachement in bugzilla.)
Thank you.

I love replying to myself, but I removed the changes I had made to the
Config.wtf file. I am also not using -opengl on the command line when invoking
wine.
The game will now render the in-game graphics correctly but the text is messed
up. Also, my xfce panels render on top of the game, which is annoying but
probably fixable.
I tried deleting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wine\OpenGL\DisabledExtensions and
running the game. Also, I tried setting it to GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object and
GL_ARB_vertex_program. None of the above affected the rendered text. I didn't
think these would make a difference as they probably don't come into play if you
aren't using OpenGL in WoW.
To sum up:
OpenGL enabled: no 3d graphics, horrible flickering
DirectX: indecipherable text
Although WoW was clearing detecting the changed DisabledExtensions settings (as
it would tell me my gfx hardware had changed and ask to reset to the defaults
(which I did)) they didn't seem to make a lick of difference.

I managed to get WoW to install and run but I get flickering visuals and no 3d
graphics at all.
ubuntu 6.06
wine 0.9.23 packages from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/
kernel 2.6.15-26-k7 (Athlon64 X2 4400)
nvidia 1.0-8762 (6200TC)
The menus and interface elements all seem to render flawlessly (except for the
flickering, which is over the entire screen.)
I installed WoW via the trial installer.
Installed the two patches required (without using the blizzard downloader.)
I made some changes to the Config.wtf per the howto on the appdb page:
SET gxApi "opengl" //forces wow to run in opengl without having to append
--opengl to wow.exe
SET ffxDeath "0"
I tried applying the two suggested registry settings one at a time. I also tried
without this registry key first. I set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wine\OpenGL
to GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object and GL_ARB_vertex_program
In the case of no registry key, and both of the above values, text always
rendered correctly but there was always flickering and it never rendered and of
the real game graphics (just menus, interface elements, etc.)
I haven't tried the patch to 0.9.23 that's supposed to fix this. I probably
will at some point.

I'm using GIT from Oct 25th, 2006. After getting rid of the CD check I can start
the game and actually play. I'll attach a screenshot (and yeah, my gnome is old
enough to have that fullscreen bug).
Framerate, however, is extremely lousy. Something like 5 fps or so. I don't see
obvious rendering artifacts, although I didn't leave that starting room yet ;)
Sound is stuttering like mad, too - but that's normal for games running at this
framerate...
Increasing the resolution doesn't seem to work - the resolution stays the same,
but parts of the game display get clipped away.

I have similar problem with Internet Explorer 6. It works fine but when I open a
new window and switch back to original one in window manager, the application
stops responding and redrawing and Wine prints following message:
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x607e61e0 "x11drv_main.c:
X11DRV_CritSection" wait timed out in thread 0009, blocked by 0012, retrying (60
sec)
After that timeout:
fixme:imm:ImmDisableIME (-1): stub
wine: Critical section 607e61e0 wait failed at address 0x602a6ee0 (thread 0009),
starting debugger...
WineDbg starting on pid 0x8

err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000194 flags 0 addr 0x602a6ee0
Process of pid=0x00000008 has terminated
... and starts wine-dbg which exits immediatelly. It works fine with previous
Wine (0.9.22).
