I tried the patch in comment #11, using opengl mode and the game runs if not
perfectly, well enough that I stopped playing in windows. In many hours of
playing, the game never once crashed. There is no flickering with the patch
applied to 0.9.23. I haven't tried 0.9.24 yet.
There are a few issues, however:
Water surfaces: in a body of water the most distant surface of the water will
occasionally flash white.
Lower frame rate: It's definately lower as reported by the Titan mod in any
case. I'm not sure how accurate this is but I usually get 20-30fps in wine and
30 or 60 in XP. That being said, the frame rate isn't noticably different to my
eyes.
Slight visual issues: it seems like there are some other visual glitches that
are somewhat minor and not that noticable. They are just a little distracting.
It's hard to describe them though, maybe I can try and get some screen caps of
this and the white water flash.

Yuri, here's the source code (it's too fancy, I later learned there is an
easier way - that is, without using NTDLL.DLL).
Please do post some numbers, as people on bug 6506 were complaining it could be
emule's fault.
I've been thinking about how to track down the handle leak. Unfortunately it
won't be easy, emule uses around 40 imports from WS2_32.DLL. My efforts at
building smatch have failed (it seems impossible to build GCC 3.1.1 on newer
versions of GCC, and I don't know where to find a 3.1.1 binary to build itself
with), any ideas?

But starting 0.9.24 context help works - much better than before.
Anyway, you may use native winhlp32.exe until wine's one will be complete.

All right, I can get a full backtrace by running "gdb wine" and then attaching
it to the hung process, but the backtrace has no symbolic information, because
(I think) gdb can't automatically pick up shared libraries when you attach it to

Would it help if I built wine from source so as to have the symbolic information
right in the binaries, rather than in a debuginfo package?

I installed a German MS Office 97 with wine-0.9.24.
When I start Office 97 the second time it complains about not being able to

-----------

My poor translation to English:

Word could not read this file (Normal.dot). Please re-enable the network
connection or replace the floppies and retry.

-----------
Clicking "Retry" doesn't help; the dialog always reappears. After
clicking "Cancel" Word presents another but somehow incomplete warning dialog:
-----------

In English that means something like "Word can existing...". I will attach a
screenshot.
When I want to exit Word I get another warning message:

Translation:

Do you want to overwrite the existing file Normal.dot?
|Yes| |No| |Cancel|

If I choose "No" a FileSave dialog opens. If I close this FileSave dialog I am
back in Word.
If I try to exit Word again I get a _another_different_ warning message:
-----------

My translation:
-----------
The changes have impact on the template Normal.dot. Do you want to save this

Only after choosing "No" I finally managed to exit Word.
Looking at the file does not show any specialities:

Hi ,the problem is you should copy msvcirt.dll (mind the "i"!) from a windows

Then that error should be gone. Please reopen the bug if you still run into

After downloading and unizipping Classic99 v 3.7 I try to run it...
$ wine classic99.exe
The window opens up, and you are greeted with a long beep, it should be short,
and then every thing after that is extremely slow. The first time I ran the
program it locked up so I selected a cartridge and restarted that at least
allowed me to get a little further, slowly, but then died after displaying a
tiny version of the game board in the upper right hand corner of the window.

-When doing the "sudo make uninstall" command, an error occurs at the end of
the process (a screenshot is available in attachment) saying
"update-desktop-database : unknown command".
-Then, during the "make" process, it seems that nothing is done (a screenshot
is available too). "Entering directory /home/... Nothing to do for all leaving

Maybe this can explain my bug ...

Fairly easy fix for this when your run ./configure run it like this:
./configure CFLAGS=-fno-stack-protector
The default under *ubuntu is for the stack protector flag to be enabled which
causes the wine preloader to crash, turn it off and wine compiles fine and works
without any noticable problems.

Wine crashes your system because your system has a problem. You should report
the problem as a bug in your distribution. This is not a Wine problem, because
systems should not be crashable by user software.

Bugs usually require an application to test and verify. For some programs,
simply returning TRUE might make the program work.
Since you're presumably a programmer, and you want to use Wine to support your
(unknown) application, how about having a go at fixing it yourself?

Installation works fine, if ungodly slowly (15 minutes on a fast machine!).
It even survives the disk change ok (as long as you didn't start

Startup fails unless you have a sound device, so
I had to run winecfg and pick oss (users shouldn't have to do this!).
Then it fails with a direct draw error:
err:ddraw:IDirectDrawSurfaceImpl_SetSurfaceDesc Setting the surface memory isn't
supported yet
and a dialog:
"InitDirectDraw(), backBuffer SetSurfaceDesc() - DDERR_INVALIDPARAMS - One or

I'll have to test 0.9.8 some day. There are no versions of wine between 0.9.9
and 0.9.22 as Gentoo ebuilds. Looks like the dcom 'update' broke the 0.9.9
install too. winecfg and wine don't work at all now.
When trying out the different versions I unemerged previous versions and rm'd

I tried dungeon keeper 2 demo (version 1.0) in wine 0.9.24 and I got some
interesting results similar to the full version of the game (version 1.7).
First of all, there are much more messages printed by wine right out of the

by a deadlock of some thread(s).
Attached is the output of

That could be the 0.9.16 patch ( see the old archives section of the Wow AppDB
page, although I'm by no means certain that is the patch or whether it got
applied to the wine tree ), however I think we are talking about two different
problems here that have been labelled with the same name 'flickering problem'.
The old ATI flickering problem was simply a flicker possibly with a frequency of
2hz or less that only appeared under the chat area located bottom left of the
screen, it really was fairly minor but annoying if you like things to be perfect.
the Nvidia flickering problem, is as I understand it the whole screen or things
in the distance ( please correct me if I'm wrong as I've never seem this first
hand ).
My apologies for not keeping strictly to the bug in question but...
All together, as of 0.9.23 there are 4 major video issues that seem to have
appeared about the time the code got moved to winex11.drv, although there may
not be a connection.
ATI 9550 cards and presumably 8500 series and upwards....
1. A loss of text or text that appears to be torn, fixed by using the

Anyway, I'm going to try out wow with 0.9.24 standard unpatched and document

Hi Alexander,
The last comment about ATI cards causing wow to crash hard is not strictly true.
I have an ATI 9550 an my system and I've never seen wow crash.
Either the crashing is specific to the X series ATI cards or some other reason.
The only problem I see with my 9550 is the minimap turn white when I go inside a
building, as soon as I exit the building it's back to normal.
This is in opengl not direct3D

One thing to note, there is a tricky process to switching disk in Unix. If
you're current directory in bash is the directory of the cdrom, the kernel
thinks there's a hold on the cdrom and it won't let you eject, so you have to
follow these steps when running an install:
1) cd /media/cdrom
2) wine setup.exe & (<-- the & is important so you can cd out of the cdrom directory
3) cd / (anywhere but the cdrom directory)
4) wine eject (when it asks for the next disk)
5) winecfg (you might have to setup up the cdrom drive in winecfg->drives if you
don't have the right version of hal)
6) Press 'Retry'

Summary: Some installers can overwrite the ELF regsvr32 binary
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: mike(a)plan99.net
If Wine is installed to a user-writable location, some installers (*cough*ie6)
will happily blow away the native ELFDLL binary and replace it with a PE binary.
Wine doesn't expect this and generates a message about it being corrupted when
an app tries to use it.
Ideally, we should either
a] prevent Windows apps from overwriting certain protected binaries
b] fix the Wine loader so if it finds a PE binary with a .exe.so name, it can
still load it

No, OpenGL should be faster and more complete. All our D3D stuff does in the end
is translate the calls back into OpenGL. That means there is an overhead. OpenGL
should be used when there is the alternative. The flickering problem should be
resolved if it's not a game bug.

This patch was located on an external site, I'm adding it to the bug in order

This patch only changes one line! Changing a call to the GetObjectType(hdc) to

The patch Louis refers to doesn't apply anymore. Here's

It does not seem to be a regression. Installed from 2 year old download in a
clean .wine The sync update fails the same way with wine-0.9 rpm and current git
and current git with patch for "msvcrt Fix fread on large buffers in ascii
mode." from today at 7:28 pm. Since sync update has worked many times before is
could be a website change triggering the problem.

Ok, this is obviously a cludge but it certainly worked to get me to the login screen
$ cd .wine/drive_c/Mythic/Darkness
$ su
password: xxxxxxx
$ ulimit -n 50000
$ wine camelot.exe
and the patcher patches.
now to get past the connecting..... and get into the game :)
it seems i can only get it to work as root, probably more of a lacking of
knowledge on my part.

This issue seems to be caused by a bug in the patcher. It repeatedly calls
FindFirstFile() to check all the files, but forgets to do a FindClose() to free
the allocated handles.
The FindFirstFile() call does a NtCreateFile() which asks the wineserver process
to open a file, thus allocating a file descriptor.. after 1024 of those, the
wineserver will run out of filedescriptors and the open will fail
(unfortunately, the wineserver doesnt report this).
Possible workaround is to bump the file descriptor limit of the process. The
patcher alone needs about 26000 file descriptors.
Using 'ulimit -n 50000' I was able to get to the Play prompt of the patcher.
