Hm. Fancy that. Running Warcraft III: Frozen Throne in opengl mode produced a
MUCH better game. But I'm not implying the two games are related, just that I
guess Bliz had a different priority for WoW.
I guess if getting the DirectX emulation optimized for WoW would produce better
results, I'm all for that. It'll no doubt have payoffs for other DX
applications as well.

System 1
Ubuntu 6.06LTS
* NVidia GEForce 6600GT AGP 128MB
* AMD Athlon 64 2800 Socket 754
* ABit KV8 Pro
* 1.5GB PC-3200 DDR RAM
System 2

* ABit NF7-S V2.0 (NOT NF7-S 2)
* 1GB PC-3200 DDR RAM
World of Warcraft 1.12.1 (5875) (Release)
* Launched using: "wine 'C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Launcher.exe'"
Description:
WoW randomly hangs. Video simply stops working, system is not locked however.
ALT-Tab still works, display manager still present. Window can be dragged using
the gnome window-drag meta.
Steps:
Play WoW for an unspecific duration.
Notes:
This problem is present on both ATI and NVidia hardware.
It will be difficult to troubleshoot this given that wine's debugging output
causes the game to be unplayable enough to prevent getting to this point.

Problem:
When WoW is run using OpenGL mode, a problem with flickering graphics presents
itself. On my machine, I have also noticed that there is no 3D graphics
anywhere at all. The only thing rendered on the screen are UI controls, menus
and other 2D visuals.
Steps:
Run WoW using the command line above. Issue is right away noticeable.
Notes:
o A workaround patch was created by someone who seemed to understand the
problem. The following link will offer a copy of it, however the WoW appdb page
contains a posted copy of it as well:

o I have included a screenshot which obviously won't depict the flickering
issue, but does exhibit the missing 3D visuals.
o Obviously it is desirable to be able to run WoW in OpenGL mode as opposed to
DirectX as it offers an opportunity to greatly improve performance.

Would it not be worth telling to launch MPLAB in a virtual desktop window in the

Erm, attach a screenshot of what? lol. That would be kinda pointless considering
you can't SEE the explosions, there is litterally nothing there. The guys
running along the beach just appear to be flying into the air randomly (because
you don't see the explosion). You can occasionally see some of the dust or dirt
fly up around where the explosion (I think explosion may be the wrong word) but
most of the time you don't see anything.

As mentioned above, if you're running the game fullscreen in a virtual desktop,
this probably isn't a valid bug. It's really up to the game to keep the mouse in
its window in that case, and since the game thinks it's in fullscreen mode it
probably doesn't bother.

Could you attach a screenshot? Last I tried the game the explosions in the intro
were visible.
What's nasty about this game is that it seems to take different render paths
based on the gfx card's PCI ID though. For example, the white/green terrain
issue only occurs (occured? haven't tried lately) if you pass a PCI ID for a
GF6xxx or higher, if you pass a GF5xxx ID it looks correct.

Not true. I have a game that locks the mouse in virtual desktop mode.
The problem is virtual desktop is not a windows feature, so it is really up to
each game to decide whether to use mouse grab. Many obviously don't because they
don't know that they are windowed. Virtual desktop is really meant for debugging
anyway. You should use the game how it is designed in fullscreen mode.
DXGrab has been deprecated a long time, and didn't really work anyway other than
on a few ddraw apps (in fullscreen even!). This is really a request for an
enhancement at this point.

The patch was too large, and it was rejected.. and I don't have time to break it
up. Furthermore some pieces will conflict with move to WGL by Roderick, so that
should be merged first.
However, Henri Verbeet fixed the bug, which should have been causing the
upside-down problem, and that was merged - I'm not sure why your game is still
upside down.

Quick, let's play a game of "find the right place to say something".
Oh good. Another pass-the-buck situation by your friendly open source buglist
maintainers.
I think you're totally missing my point then.
What do I need to submit outside of just saying "nurh, doesn't work."
What would YOU do if you were troubleshooting a problem in an app? What files
would you look for to include? These are the things we don't get told and they
can sometimes change between applications.
I've got a list here of four issues that I'd love to be able to provide a
detailed account of for you guys.

RegisterClassExA is used to register "ClaWin4194304Class1", and it gets the atom
0000c029. Sometime later we do:
GetClassNameA(00010026,0033e6f8,00000004)
which tries to get the name into a 4 character buffer, but we return:
user32.GetClassNameA() retval=00000000
So between GlobalGetAtomNameA and GetClassNameA there's some kind of bug. Looks
like it's time for a conformance test...

GlobalGetAtomNameA() behaves a bit different than in windows.
I changed:
if (len >= count)
{
len = 0;
SetLastError( ERROR_MORE_DATA );
}
in wine code to:
if (len >= count)
{
return c;
}
and programs work ok :).
Further investigation is needed to determine the exact way it should work.

My findings:
0x4e18ec is an address of window procedure of a clarion program called from
wine-0.9.23/dlls/user/winproc.c:454
Under Windows, this procedure is being launched over 100 times
while under wine - only once
Why does it matter for this bug?
The error dialog is being displayed upon this condition:
0x004e25c4: cmpl $0,0x109(%esi)
0x004e25cb: jz 0x004e2631
Under windows it doesn't jump, under wine it jumps and GPFs.
Altering this line to NOP causes window with clickable menus to appear under
wine, but it's disfunctional.
Under my windows debugger 0x109(%esi) is 0x00cda681.
The last time it is being set (to 84) in program is here:
0x004e1bdf: movl %eax,0x109(%ebx)
It's right in the window procedure placed under 0x4e18ec, in some kind of a
switch() statement on EAX register, executed if EAX == 1.
What further steps would you recommend to perform?

You did say that you have a kernel with the vmsplit "problem". I don't know,
ubuntu could have patched the kernel to add it in. However you still hit the
check just like the patch shows, so I don't think we are necessarily supporting
anything other than 3/1. Also, winedbg isn't a windows program. But feel free to
ask Alexandre or Eric Pouech on this one. Also, maybe you should try to update
your kernel, there is a new release number like -26 out now.

Two things strike me as odd about that link. One is that I don't have a 2.6.16
kernel; my kernel version is still 2.6.15. The other is that it seems to claim
this is only a problem for some windows 98 apps. "You can use a 2G/2G split when
Windows version is set to win2k, but many apps still require win98, and in that
mode we need 3G of user address space." I'm not emulating win98, and there's no
reason winedbg should require such a thing.

Well I'm just going to resolve this works-for-me. You cannot pinpoint a problem
version, and you can't give any reason why the memory split option should simply
work. In that I suggest you read this
http://www.winehq.com/?issue=310
I don't know how you obtained a kernel built like that, but it would be a really
good idea to get another one or learn how to build one.

I don't know how to properly compile my own kernel. I'm convinced that the
kernel is not the problem as I've had wine working with stack traces with this
kernel before. I cannot do a regression test because versions as early as 0.9.18
(haven't tried anything earlier), which worked for me at one time, now have this
problem.
I'm sure this was triggered by some change in my system, but I don't know what
it could be.

Well are you going to compile a kernel with that fixed? Or do a regression test?
It was my understanding that other splits don't work with wine. So that is what
I'm thinking, as winedbg works for me.

Patch to prevent the use of CreateCompatibleDC at GetDIBits (try 1)
(quoting myself from wine-devel)
The only users of _CheckNotSysLevel in the Wine tree are dlls/user and dll/gdi
. In dlls/user the pattern seems to be to use USER_Lock() and USER_Unlock() in
strict pairs to protect blocks of code and not call any other functions that
use USER_CheckNotLock(). In dlls/gdi the lock is taken once every time a
reference to a GDI object is requested, but the rule about not calling other
functions that check GDI_CheckNotLock() can be violated (at least in my bug) on
the rendering of a metafile, as shown by the sequence:
(App tries to draw an icon into a metafile)
DrawIconEx calls into StretchBlt
(dlls/gdi/bitblt.c:140) StretchBlt calls DC_GetDCUpdate, then DC_GetDCPtr .
Both of these functions increment the GDI lock, so it ends up with a lock count
of (at least) 2.
(dlls/gdi/bitblt.c:148) With lock held, StretchBlt calls into
dcDst->funcs->pStretchBlt. Since this is a metafile, it calls into
EMFDRV_StretchBlt
(dlls/gdi/enhmfdrv/bitblt.c:186) EMFDRV_StretchBlt delegates to
EMFDRV_BitBlockTransfer
(dlls/gdi/enhmfdrv/bitblt.c:163) EMFDRV_BitBlockTransfer calls into GetDIBits
<-- possible source of bug?
(dlls/gdi/dib.c:556) GetDIBits calls CreateCompatibleDC with the source HDC
(dlls/gdi/dc.c:728) CreateCompatibleDC() calls into GDI_CheckNotLock
unconditionally. But StretchBlt already raised the lock count --> debug
assertion.
So, when metafiles are involved, this sequence of calls triggers the debug
assertion in CreateCompatibleDC().
(quote from Alexandre Julliard)
Yes, and the assertion should remain there. The real bug is that
GetDIBits creates a new DC, it shouldn't need to do that.
This is the first attempt at a patch that will fix the debug assertion when
icons are rendered into metafiles (triggered by Enterprise Architect 6.5, and
possibly others). This patch simply removes mentions of memdc, created by a
call to CreateCompatibleDC(), and redirects calls to GetDIBColorTable() to use
the original DC instead of memdc.

Please excuse the long-winded nature of this "enhancement".
I'm running WoW on Wine using a 6600GT, AMD64 2800 (754), 1.5GB RAM, Ubuntu 6.06LTS.
The version of Wine I'm using is from the repository referenced on Wine's web site.
WoW runs in the emulated DirectX mode, but when I enable -opengl, the flicker
bug presents itself. Will a future version of Wine be correcting this issue?
I'm also interested in compiling together a listing of all the possible
points-of-entry for configuring and troubleshooting WoW when running via Wine.
For example: wine's regedit, WoW's .WTF, card-specific driver panels, runtime
flags, console output, crash logs...
My best reason is that I can't consistently guarantee performance and stability
just yet. When a new version of either WoW or Wine come out, sometimes things
break and I'd like to know where to go or how to generate output that helps the
Wine coders.

Yes. The problem here is that in D3D the depth buffer can be shared between an
offscreen and onscreen surface, and in wine we currently can't. That causes the
sky to be drawn over the terrain, giving the invisible terrain. I've got some
patches that fix this issue in my local tree, but at the moment they break a lot
of other things, and the performance is unacceptably slow.

I tried running in fullscreen or windowed mode, to no effect. I also tried
running fullscreen and window inside of a virtual desktop, to no effect.

I've tried all the functions of this program "RTFP" that I can find and
everything is working perfectly.
Can I count on this patch going in for 0.9.24?
Thanks again for the quick response,
I'll be using this for a flight on Sunday thanks to you!

The program I run for communication and downloading of data from my Davis

that it quit working.
I run "wine WeatherLink52.exe" from and hit "download data from the weather

fixme:comm:GetCommProperties (0x60 0x33ed28 )
WeatherLink reports that "Computer gave up waiting for a response from the

the serial port. It works fine on Windows, and on very old versions of WINE from
Debian Sarge, but not on current versions.

Had the same problem, running Notes 7.0.1 with wine 0.9.21 without any problems,
switching to wine 0.9.22 or 0.9.23 Notes client hangs on some mails from a
particular user and stop responding.
Not on every mail from that user, but on some. I could fix it in my case, it was
a problem with TTF fonts. I'd copy all MS fonts to wine font directory, which
was previous to 0.9.22 no problem, but the mails I had problems with use the MS
Comic TTF font (don't ask why anyone use them in mails). Removing the Comic TTF
fonts from Wine font directory and no crash while opening such mails, copy fonts
back...crash again.
It seems that beginning with Wine 0.9.22 something has changed in handling of
(MS) TTF fonts.

will pay for an account for anyone that's serious about fixing the problem.

Actually it will happen for all apps that receive keyboard input in a thread
that isn't the main one, so it will trigger on some 32-bit apps too. I committed
a workaround, please give current git a try.
