WORKAROUND.
I have this and wineboot doesn't help. If I close the app launcher 10 seconds,
giving steam time to start the game it works. If I close the app launcher
immediately after i click start the game I get the error.

client-side DIB copy patch, v3
Jesse, you're right, it was wrong for the 24 bit case, I resubmitted it to
wine-patches and added a fixed patch here.
Willie, it always looked right no matter what the bpp - bug 1973 is completely
unrelated. When I said "looked perfect", I was comparing it to the broken patch
that copied the wrong number of bytes. And unless the application already
prints "fixme: potential optimization - client-side DIB copy" while it's
running, my patch will do absolutely nothing.

That this is in the X11 driver makes sense given the bug is triggered by
keyboard input. As an amendment to my prior post, it seems that mouse clicks do
not trigger the bug; the screen does not become unresponsive until the first
keyboard event is received.

The reason you see the message in 24-bit color depths for wanting to switch to
16-bit color is that the game is requesting it, but the X server cannot change
color depths without restarting. So wine has to convert from 24 to 16-bit color
to allow the game to run. Apparently the patch is not correct for 24-bit color?

Thanks a lot Damjan! How did it look in 24bit without your patch applied?
Similar to what I reported for bug #1973 (a screenshot is attached)? Because
that application also works perfectly with X set to 16bit, but the graphics
are completely broken in 24bit. According to the author of the affected
application, it's a bug in StretchDIBits, but it sounds somewhat similar to
what you describe. Your patch doesn't affect bug #1973, BTW, but it may still
be a similar issue...?

client-side DIB copy patch, v2
Well, I'll be damned...
After hours of trying with no luck, I saw the message:
Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 16.
So I tried running X in 16-bit depth, and Heroes 4 worked substantially faster
(with no patches).
I added the dirty rectangle patch - maybe ran a little faster.
I added the client-side DIB copy patch - looked perfect, ran like lightning!
So why does it work in 16 bpp and not in 24? I switched X back to 24, and sure
enough, it was still broken. Where I calculate witdhs and offsets, I tried
multiplying by 4 instead of 3 - even worse. So I tried multiplying by 2 instead
- looked perfect, ran like lightning.
But how can it be using 16 bpp when it reports 24? Well, incredibly enough,
X_PHYSDEVICE's depth and X_PHYSDEVICE's bitmap's pixmap_depth are the X pixmap
depth, NOT the client-side bitmap depth which is given by DIBSECTION's dsBm's
bmBitsPixel (a fact which isn't documented anywhere).
When I changed the code to use the DIBSECTION values like it should, everything
looks good and runs super-fast. I've already submitted the patch to
wine-patches. Happy playing ;-).

Summary: Win16 app w/custom bitmap fonts locks on Wine 0.9.23,
works on versions <= 0.9.22
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.23.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-dos
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ktk(a)enterprise.bidmc.harvard.edu
I have a 16-bit windows terminal-emulator application that runs flawlessly on
all versions of Wine up to and including 0.9.22. It uses custom .FON fonts that
are converted via fnt2bdf -> bdftopcf to allow the app to draw and emulate the
character generator of a Data General terminal.
On Wine version 0.9.23, the application freezes solid as soon as a button-press
or key-press event is received. It is not in a run-loop; there is no debug output.
When first invoked, the application draws a fixed-size main window using a
special 7x9 font. On top of that, it pops up a small "connection settings"
window with typical controls and buttons for entering and selecting parameters.
Under Wine version 0.9.23, both the main window and its pop-up behave
normally (with respect to other X11 windows) until either a key-press or
mouse-click is delivered to either window, whereupon the application becomes
non-responsive. When this happens, the windows stop re-drawing themselves when
they are moved or dirtied; for example, if one focuses and then blurs some other
window, the other window's bitmap remains visible within the confines of this
app's window.
I have no access to the source of the application, so am somewhat at a loss as
to how to get more information out of it about why it is freezing. I mention
the custom screen fonts in case that might be the smoking gun; I assume other
people using 16 bit apps are not having such issues. The application itself is
officially called "MediTech Remote Workstation" and is built with "KIPP
Developer's Toolkit."

Ignore my last entry, it turns out that we trip up over the summary information
in the msi file and never set the WordCount properly. Changing the break on
suminfo.c:176 to continue makes everything work, but a better solution is needed.

The installation files are all in the 15 or so cab files that come with the
setup. The installer doesn't set the compressed attribute for any of the files
or in the WordCount property, so according to what little informatiion msdn says
about compressed files, these files should not be recognized as compressed. I
have a feeling that native msi checks if a source file exists, and if it doesn't
it checks if there is a cab entry in the media table for that file, and if there
is, then the file is compressed. I'll write a test case for this.

This is a bug in ole. Running with native ole32,oleaut32,rpcrt4 gets past this
bug (and the app installs successfully). There is a condition in the
ControlEvents table that prevents the next dialog from showing:
AgreeToLicense = "Yes" and PROVIDEX_INSTALLED_COUNT = 0 and RC1 <> "Y"
AgreeToLicense is "Yes" and RC1 is not "Y", but PROVIDEX_INSTALLED_COUNT is not
an initialized property. PROVIDEX_INSTALLED_COUNT should be set to 0 in the
FindInstalledProvidex custom action, but it is not. I'm not an ole guru by any
means, but if I read the log correctly, the custom action tries to call a method
in an IDispatch interface that is remote (different process).

dirty rectangle patch, v2
Well, found out why the dirty rectangle patch sometimes crashes winecfg (a
pointer is sometimes NULL), so I posted a new patch that doesn't crash crash.
It's against wine-0.9.23, but it should apply cleanly to 0.9.22 (since the
0.9.22 patch applies cleanly against 0.9.23).
As far as the client-side DIB copy patch goes, the width and height of the
source and destination rectangles have to be the same, otherwise X11DRV_BitBlt
(and hence my code) never gets called. I did thorough checks against the x-y
coordinates and width and height - they're always valid, positive, in-range -
perfect in every way.
But I tried to copy the original destination pixels into a buffer, then copy
pixels from source to destination, then mark the image DIB_Status_GdiMod and
coerce it to DIB_Status_InSync (forcing the image to be downloaded from the X
server again), and compare the newly downloaded image with the originally
downloaded image. The result? They differ! Somehow, the X server is modifying
the image while the pixels are being copied client-side. I've tried using
wine_tsx11_lock(), XFlush(), GdiFlush(), glFinish(), tried locking the image in
DIB_Status_AppMod or DIB_Status_InSync instead of the current DIB_Status_None,
and nothing worked.

No, most Micrsoft installers check for a drive named harddisk* or ramdisk*, and

Summary: Enterprise Architect (trial) crash at _CheckNotSysLevel
on gdi lock
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.23.
Platform: PC
URL: http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/bin/easetup.exe
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Keywords: download
Severity: major
Priority: P3
Component: wine-gui
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: a_villacis(a)palosanto.com
Platform: Fedora Core 5 (updated at 2006/10/11) with linux 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5
With wine 0.9.23, the trial version of Enterprise Architect installs and starts
up correctly into its main screen. However, when opening the sample file
EAExample.eap, wine crashes with the following error message on the console:
err:syslevel:_CheckNotSysLevel Holding lock 0x60629d00 level 3
I managed to capture a backtrace in winedbg, and the backtrace points into the
GDI code. So my wild guess is that there is some unbalanced lock operation.
Steps to reproduce:
1 - Install from easetup.exe
2 - Run as wine EA.exe from default installation directory
3 - File -> Open shows a dialog for a file path. Select the button with "..."
4 - At standard open dialog, select EAExample.eap
5 - File loads, then crash with error shown above.

Two things to try:
1) If the drive that stores your .wine is remote, go into winecfg and force it
to be recognized as local.
2) Go into .wine and rename drive_c to harddiskvolume1, changing the symbolic
link in dosdevices to match accordingly.

The Printer-Names, that wine receives from CUPS during LoadSystemPrinters()
are encoded as UTF-8, but we call AddPrinterA with this Names.
We need to covert the CUPS-Names with MultiByteToWideChar(CP_UTF8, ...)
and use AddPrinterW on the result, but that is not possible yet,
since wine uses always the same code to print a document
to a Printer from CUPS and to a Printer from "/etc/printcap":
WideCharToMultiByte(CP_ACP, ...) with "lpr"
This will be fixed, when the Local Printmonitor (in localspl.dll)
is able to send the data of the document to the correct (unix)-backend.

I've investigated MWM case. The problem here is that MWM doesn't add functions
to default transient functions with functions hints. The only way to enlarge set
of transient functions is to set default resource. In that case you'll get
minimize/maximize even on transient windows.
Heh, I really wonder if MWM need some fix.

Was this feature deliberately removed? I have a few applications that only
behave correctly in virtual desktop mode (apps with child windows that are
always on top otherwise, therefore hiding file requesters and dialog boxes),
yet most apps work perfectly without that option. But it seems impossible to
activate virtual desktop mode only for specific applications with current Wine
releases, which is quite a let-down - starting winecfg every time I want to
use an affected application to switch on desktop mode, enter the desired
resolution, and deactivate it again once I close the app in question is
cumbersome and seems unneccessary. It's not even possible to force desktop
mode for a specific application using regedit.

Once we enable, and we want something to download (for example filelists,

unhandled exception inside of DCPlusPlus.exe. I think this is common controls
related, because the crash probably occurs when dc wants to draw it's eye

Summary: rapidly flashing cursor mouse.c (patch)
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC-x86-64
URL: http://comptune.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=253
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: nospam(a)thenerdshow.com
You can play Dark Age of Camelot in wine by faking wine into thinking 12 bit
color is a supported format and running login.dll directly. When the game is
started the cursor switches from the normal black to white and it looks fine.
However, once game.dll is loaded, the cursor rapidly flashes and this makes it
almost invisible. Game play and testing is difficult at best with this (nearly)
invisible mouse.
I have made the following patch that fixes the problem of the flashing mouse
cursor in Dark Age of Camelog without breaking other d3d apps I have tested,
including Warcraft III and Minions of Mirth.
I'm still fairly new at hacking wine... This patch prevents wine from creating a
null cursor. The only problem might be a cosmetic one, where an application
tries to hide the cursor when displaying a video for example. Therefore, I am
seeking a better solution.

This happens with Warcraft 3 as well. This should be obvious since they use the
same engine.
The demo shows it. It is very easy to reproduce. Get a hero, and hit the
corresponding inventory key for two usable items using the same slot. First time
it works, second it does not. I have a save game if anyone is interested.
This game does not appear to use dinput.
As for modifying key bindings, it does sound almost exactly the same problem
with modifying key bindings in Star Wars Battlefront. I think it's all related.

I'm almost positive that bug has something to do with the base addresses of most
of the dlls. Of course it would be more helpfull if you provide Wine's own
backtrace and module info (in case that D2 somehow misinterpreted the information).
Windows has a hard limit of 2G for user space. And most if not all old programs
will fail if they encounter address that is past 2GB mark (0x7fffffff).
This is what Wine's preloader is for. But it's disabled on BSD (by ports author
because preloader doesn't work on BSD).

finished successfully and I tried to run Diablo app again. It also failed. I
will now attach the new dump file. I guess it will give you some infomration on

If this app works reliably under Windows but has the clipping under wine then it
is a bug in wine, not in the application. As I thought the buttons are 2px
higher what would suggest this app manages to create a non-flat toolbar with a
0px margin. When I will have time I'll try to fix it (UBSPay has also a similar
problem) but I would need to do it carefully not to introduce new bugs.

Anyway, if you are convinced that it's a bug in that app and aren't willing to
hack around it, then I'm not disappointed. The horizontally shifted icons were
horrible, but with that fixed the program is very usable!

This app is setting and clearing the TBSTYLE_FLAT style. Flat toolbars have a
top margin of 0px while non-flat have the margin of 2px. Probably by playing
with the TBSTYLE_FLAT the app is able to create a non-flat toolbar with a 0px
margin. We reset the top margin after each TB_ADDBUTTON thus it doesn't work.
When I will have some time I'll try to make this compatible with Windows.

I did look at your log. I know very well what is going on with your system. If
you are trying to report underrun problems, then this report is a dupe. However,
you threw in a comment, asking about the digital output -- that should be more
or less independent of wine. Unless you explain what you are having trouble with
(ie winecfg) I don't know what to go on.
But let me state one more time, having digital output won't necessarily fix your
underrun problems. This is a *known* wine problem.

I get sound problems (static, anomalies) while playing the game, and there is
quite a fair bit of output made to the console.
The further details are not "asking" for help. Although if a feature is not
inherantly obvious, it might be a good idea to put on a list somewhere for
yourselves. Usability is important as well.
Please re-read what I stated. If you want to ignore my questions, so be it, but
there is a sound problem when I play.

This is for filing reports for bugs, not asking for general help. When filing a
report, do only one bug per report.
The alt-click problem is a problem with a setting in your window manager. See
the appdb, and ask for general help there or on wine-users. If you cannot use
your digital output, please state WHY, and I'll reopen the bug. It's not
necessarily going to improve sound performance though.

attempt at a client-side DIB copy patch for wine-0.9.22
Well, unimpressed by the slight performance improvement to Heroes 4 by Iulian's
dirty rectangle patch, I decided to look into the problem further. The message
"potential optimization - client side DIB copy" gets printed out a lot while
playing Heroes 4, and I tried to do a client-side DIB copy.
With this little patch, the frame rate is unbelievably high, but unfortunately
for some strange reason the graphics come out corrupted (mouse trails, stuff
drawn wrongly, flickering pictures).
I've already posted to wine-devel asking for help - nobody's replied in 2 days
:-( so I'm putting the patch here so it doesn't get lost. I will continue to
try different things - currently I'm looking into the possibility of the image
being modified on the X server while I copy pixels locally - but I would really
appreciate anyone with any knowledge of winex11.drv to look at it and comment,
I've been looking at the code for days and still don't know what's wrong.

manually in, just to be on the safe side. Anything else I can try? I wouldn't
mind adding some debugging messages if it helps.

I didn't try with Git or the 0.9.22 release, but only with good old CVS, and
yes: that's fixed in CVS/HEAD! The map software is now much easier to use.
Thanks a lot!
There's only a minor, cosmetic problem left: the lower button border is
missing, so there's apparently still a small vertical shift. See:
http://members.aon.at/mfranz/toolbar_buttons2.png [23 kB] But I can live very
well with that. :-)

Note 'fixme' messages are still output, which is what the bug summary refers to.
The program now runs again though.
A bug exists with Vaz Modular where, on shutting down, or closing a synth
window, a message box appears saying 'cannot focus a disabled or invisible
window' for every module used in a patch. (that's around a hundred 'ok's to
click for some setups!)
Should I start a new bug for this?

To fake the .NET install:
It really depends on which installer is asking for .NET because they all do
weird things, but for this installer:
Copy the registry keys in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETFramework and
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Net Framework Setup from Window's registry to Wine's
registry. Copy windows\system32\catroot to .wine/drive_c/windows/system32. I
think that should be it for this installer.
After installing, I tried to run the app. It asks you to register the product,
but that fails when trying to connect to the internet. That should be reported
ni another bug though.

The items are added to the Trash as defined by the freedesktop.org standard. The
problem is that currently Gnome doesn't support this standard. You are probably
using Gnome and that's why you don't see them. If you have KDE you could try to
use it to restore files.
I've started implementing a Trash virtual folder for wine so that the user can
manage it even if the desktop environment doesn't support it but currently the
folder doesn't support file restoring and there is no application in wine that
could be used to view it. I'll try to add these.

I am ultimately trying to get Half Life 2 running on Ubuntu Edgy.
So far Steam and HL1/TFC work great - no problems.
However HL2 won't start at all. Various web sites says it needs sound to run and
that OSS is best.
So i thought i would try and configure wine to use OSS (Edgy is already set to
use OSS in Sound Preferences but this didn't seem to make any difference).
Anyway, when i click on the 'Audio' tab in winecfg it crashes and i get this
message:

The "strange" thing is that it had been fixed with some wine release, but got

just an empty line.

I was able to reproduce the problem in the downloadable Notes version
7.0 client.
1. First, I tried forwarding a message known to cause the problem and
I'm happy to note that the forwarded version does the same, at
least on the Notes version my company uses (6.5.2).
I'll be happy to forward a copy of the test message to you or
anyone else who wishes to reproduce the problem.
2. Then I downloaded the evaluation version of the Notes 7.0 client
from IBM's site, as linked in the wiki:
http://wiki.winehq.org/LotusNotes
and installed it under Wine 0.9.22 on an up-to-date instance of
Kubuntu 6.10 (Dapper Drake).
3. I got Notes running after I removed all but TCPIP from the Ports
line in notes.ini.
4. I attempted to open the forwarded test message and got the same
crash as with 6.5.2.

Nickolay could you fix that or explain better why it's really needed?

In this case I can do testing. I have got great experience in FreeBSD (about few
years of using it as desktop system and a year of low level C programming). I am
at work at the moment so I can not work at it now - but I will tonight. I will
doanload latest release and patch ddraw.c. I will report about the status later.
Thanks for your prompt aswers ;)

We have to be carfull with the versions.
The display handling code changed between Multiplayer Demo 1.0(MP10) and
Multiplayer Demo 1.1(MP11) (no idea about the Full versions).
Please mention in future posts the exact versions.

One of the differences between virtual desktop mode and normal mode is that in
virtual desktop mode wine reports 0 for the refresh rate. I don't know about
BF1942, but BF2 for example is quite sensitive to the reported refresh rate.

Created an attachment (id=3833)
--> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=3833&action=view)
executable of the Microsoft HTTPSVR sample
This is _not_ the app in question, but the Microsoft MFC sample code from which
it is derived. This is more easy to use (needs no install) and also fails under
Wine. I have prepared some example content for the server (the WebPages
subdir), which shows the problem. Here it fails even for the small file, oh
well.
I copied the WebPages directory under Linux root "/" and directed the app to
"Z:\WebPages", may vary for you.
The app needs "mfc42.dll" in order to work.
I'm not attaching the source code here, since I don't know how the MS samples
are copyrighted. I got it from an MSDN CD. Contact me if this is of strong
interest.

> Does overriding with native comctl32 help?
No, it doesn't help. The tooltip stays after adding a link.
I tried:
0. added a library comctl32.dll in winecfg (native/builtin) (same problem)
1. copying windows' comctl32.dll to wine/system folder (got wine error, app
won't start)
2. copied cxofficebeta's comctl32.dll to wine/system app start but same
tooltip problem
3. tried 'Builtin' in winecfg libraries, got same problem.
thanks.

The bug mentioned by Ben does not correspond to this. You are hitting a
compatibility bug under FreeBSD. It's probably a regression too. You ought to
find a version that does work. Sorry I don't have FreeBSD and have been unable
to track any bugs for the apps I maintain for that system. Somebody needs to
step up with FreeBSD and some skill at fixing bugs.

If the downloadable demo has a different bug, please create a
new bug for it, and remove the 'download' keyword from the old bug
(which is about the "accept" button, not a crash).

still does not have changes mentioned by you. I gess it will be present in
0.9.23 release of wine. I will check if this issue is present when new version
is released. Thanks for responce.

An interesting line in your log is
Unhandled exception: unimplemented function atl.dll.DllGetClassObject called in
32-bit code (0x42cae053).
Try installing with atl.dll overridden to native, perhaps
your app is bundled with a working atl.dll, and wine's
builtin one is too incomplete.
