The patch could be simplified a bit by omitting unnecessary white space
changes and moving XChangeProperty call which sets window's type outside
of if/else construct. Otherwise it looks good to me.
Please send it along with your observations and link to this bug to

Thanks for taking time investigating this!

I've investigated this bug a bit. The reason that metacity removes
maximize/minize is the following:
since wine doesn't set window type (it sets WM_WINDOW_TYPE only for UTILITY),
metacity tries to guess the correct window type. And since transient for is set,
it tries to set window type DIALOG. While it's completely wrong. We should set
NORMAL window type for NORMAL windows, that will help in this situation.

FF 2 RC 2 still suffers the broken installer (which, BTW, I note via
http://developer.mozilla.org/devnews/ is most likely due to a change affecting
FF 2 B2 and newer as they use a "New Windows installer based on Nullsoft
Scriptable Install System"; http://sourceforge.net/projects/nsis/) though
upgrading from FF 2B 1 still works fine.

This looks like the same problem I am having with Star Wars: KotOR I and II.
For Knights I, it starts going slow right after inserting disc 3 and continues
slow with disc 4 (both have wav files). Total wine install is about 16 hrs.
Probably a 15 min install on a Windows box.
Knights II, the problem starts on disc 4.
Again, CPU goes 100% installing these files. Interesting, though, the CD is
spinning so very hard for each file. Almost like it's searching the entire disc
for the file.
I have tried this on 0.9.21 and .22.

Hey there, in the game Ragnarok Online, it appears that when walking through
town, if there are any shops or chatrooms with the characters
"ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" filling as much as possible, the game
crashes as you mouse over it. I have tried this with other letters as well, with
the same result, but if you remove one of the letters at the end (so the string
is ONE less than the maximum), it's fine.
When mousing over, the text draws, but immediately freezes afterwards.. I've
even been able to double-click fast enough to open the shop, then have it
freeze. With a chatroom, it would have the same effect; however, I can make a
chat room of my own, and it doesn't. (Making your own chatroom displays
differently, I suppose)
But yeah, running in to the issue is pretty uncommon, I had just been walking by
and noticed the name, moused over and wondered why my game froze-- loaded up a
few more times and retried, then figured out the issue.

I also get this when starting ryzom. The first two lines as in the original
report aren't repeated and before that i get these lines:
fixme:win:WIN_CreateWindowEx Parent is HWND_MESSAGE
_X11TransSocketOpen: socket() failed for local
After the lines from the original report it crashes on NULL-pointer access.
It's the same in any configuration I tried (different depth, emulated desktop or
not, d3d or gl...). And the game displays it's splash screen correctly before
this happens. The configuration settings app of the game works correctly thu.
The game can be downloaded at http://www.ryzom.com/newcomer/game-download (1.7G).

Summary: Ubuntu 6.06 Cataclysm - sound loop makes mouse erratic
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.9.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-programs
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: bjchip(a)computer.org
Tried various combinations of sound and video settings but nothing yet works.
On startup and menu presentation the mouse and audio are perfect, the sound
track runs nicely, the mouse is smooth. This is in menus OR in the game.
After the sound loop has been played it stutters and restarts from the
beginning. The mouse then becomes erratic and unresponsive.
Interrupts are being missed, the sound system is taking priority over the mouse
and appears to be loading/reloading tiny chunks of sound in some unnecessary
manner. I tried knocking back the sound quality to no effect. This appears
whether sound is in emulation or hardware assisted. It happens at all
resolution settings, and with safegl.
Since the game played normally during previous sessions I believe that this is
something that is environment related. Some other program changed some aspect
of the sound system and it is not being reset/controlled to put it back as it
needs to be? It is currently unplayable (again).
Notable changes. Powered down overnight. Installed Skype (no, I was NOT on the
phone :-) ... I am examining the system in more detail. If I can persuade it to
boot the W98 version I may have better luck. W98 does not find the CD even when
it is explicitly identified.

How sure are you it's wine that's buggy?
Please run emule on windows for a long time, and while it's running, run this
utility every half an hour or so. Post the handle counts for emule over time.
It could well be windows's handle limits are larger, letting emule run longer.
What's the longest anybody's continuously run it?
(And if you prefer to see source code, ask.)

Summary: Wine 0.9.19 / 0.9.22 crashes running Notes6 / Notes7
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.22.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: linuxbox(a)infinito.it
I've been running Lotus Notes 6.5.3 for a long time using wine 0.9.19 Mandriva
rpm and all was ok. No problems at all. But now I've been forced to upgrade to
Notes7 and I've faced the following problems:
Wine 0.9.19 >> Notes 6 Ok || Notes 7 crashes itself after about 30 secs,
even if I just login and then stop my working.
Wine 0.9.22 >> Notes7 install correctly, starts and is able to replicate and
manage some e_mail, but crashes attempting to read some other simple email.
Now the same happens using my previous Notes6.
It seems that some upgrades have been done to allow Notes7 to run almost
partially, but the good support for Notes6 given by wine 0.9.19 has gone.
The common error i get is:
ERROR (0): NetUserEnum failed: err=5 - (131) Negative seek
I've also attempted to use some native dll's (netapi32 i.e.) but the problem is
not solved.
By the way also wine 0.9.20 and 0.9.21 crashes Notes7 living it alone after
about 30 secs.
Any suggestion?

sometimes the app starts just fine. Will bew difficult to regression test i
think. I started the app 10 times quickly after each other, it fails about 5
times out of ten. When it fails i get :
err:wgl:X11DRV_DescribePixelFormat Can't find a valid pixel format index from
the main visual, expect problems!
err:wgl:X11DRV_ChoosePixelFormat glXChooseFBConfig returns NULL (glError: 0)
I'll test a bit further.

How about you try changing line 877 of dlls/wined3d/directx.c to say
CARD_ATI_RADEON_9500 and seeing if the outcome is any different. If not then it
is probably relying on interpreting the version numbers.

OK, this is interesting. According to this line the number of CPUs are being
correctly detected by Wine:
trace:reg:GetSystemInfo <- CPU arch 0, res'd 0, pagesize 4096, minappaddr

However, I have no clue about how to look the way C4D is trying to detect the
hardware. Any help would be greatly appreciated (wine.log is now attached).

Yeah these errors are something not related to this bug.
The problem is finding how this program detects if there are more the one CPUs.
It could be looking in the registry. You might want to look at +reg debug channel:

I tried using git and it was not compiling correctly for me. Instead I found
prior versions of RPMs and used alien to convert to DEBs to test each out.
The problem of reading in the report description files did not exist in
version 0.9.18 but does exist in 0.9.19. So something related to reading in
of those files occurred during the 0.9.19 release.

I forgot to add, that i also had to do this to make it work:
'touch Microsoft.MFC80.CRT.manifest'
'touch Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest'
However that is not a bug in wine, according to someone on devel-mailinglist
these manifest files should be included with your test app.

Summary: Dual-core not being correctly supported
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.22.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-kernel
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: agustin(a)nucleosys.com
I'm running Wine on Ubuntu Dapper with an AMD X2 Dual Core. The Linux kernel is
2.6.15-27-amd64-generic SMP, so both cores are correctly detected and made use
of (I can confirm this with System Monitor).
While Wine itself does seem to make use of the second processor, the emulated
application does not. I can be certain of this because the program I'm trying to
run is a rendering application (Cinema 4D) and I can only see one rendering
thread, whereas two were seen on Windows with the same hardware. I have been
told that perhaps Wine is not correctly informing the emulated application of
the existing hadware.
I have submitted this bug as "major" because this is seriously impacting on the
performace of the application. This probably extends to other similar
multi-threaded applications as well.

I have done some regression testing and narrowed the problem down to this patch
(adding Jacek to the CC list) :
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-cvs/2006-September/026241.html
If I back my build up to just before that patch, the problem goes away. Problem
is still present in current CVS, but if I install the mshtml from 0.9.21 it also
goes away.

I am running Ubuntu 6.06 x86, but on an AMD 64 machine (Ubuntu AMD64 wouldn't
install), using an ASUS A8N5X MB and an ATI x800 graphics card using the fglx
drivers. I am able to install SecondLife, however when running it fails to
detect DirectX and gives the error Can't activate GL rendering context (this is
in a popup window - I believe it is coming from the application and not wine).
The error message from wine is "Unable to create window, be sure screen is set
at 32-bit color in Control Panels->Display->Settings" (full trace attached).
However I just recently installed Ubuntu on my other machine (an older machine
with an Nvidia card) and doing the same thing SecondLife runs fine. I have tried
running with the -ignormepixeldepth option, and I've went into winecfg and tried
under Windows 2000 and XP, disabled/enabled all of the options and I've tried
using a virtual desktop, nothing works. I do certainly have hardware
acceleration and openGL functioning properly, but it seems to me like wine is
not properly detecting or reporting the graphics capability on certain hardware
configurations.

Well, I concede, I can't determine what concretely lets my system halt in the

continue to say "wine crashed my system". Because if I didn't use wine (and so
I did), my machine worked nonstop for weeks/months hassle-free. Using 3D,

Concerning bug 2398: I read the discussion. Still no solution more than two
years later - looks a little bit like fond hope.
Anyway, installed 0.9.16 and got a reminder, why I didn't try wine for a long
time ... this version just completely crashes my machine (no ssh, no anything,
just sysrq-s-u-b left) as soon as I start the software.
Maybe the display problem doesn't exist in this version - I'm sorry, I can't
tell ... ;)

The results on Win2k show that CB_GETLBTEXTLEN messages aren't forwared to the
ComboBox (or ListBox) as in Wine. Instead, CB_GETITEMDATA is called twice which
leads to the assumption that the length is retrieved directly in ComboBoxEx.
A further investigation shows that the return value of sizeof(DWORD) is correct
for the ListBox.
Changing summary & component accordingly.

Wars) wouldn't it be a good idea to finally commit it into cvs?
Who's responsible for that sort of stuff?

Summary: America's Army 2.7 installer fails in Wine
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.22.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-msi
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: MostAwesomeDude(a)gmail.com
America's Army 2.7 fails to install in Wine. The install fails in 0.9.15 and
0.9.22. I am on Debian Etch. There are two logs appended. One log is using the
builtin MSI components, and the other log is using the native MSI from Microsoft.
To reproduce with builtin:
1) Get and start the installer.
2) When the component selection screen comes up, press "Next." It does not
matter if you customize the installation, it fails either way.
3) The installer should immediately halt and complain that the install was
interrupted. Wine does not automatically exit; I have to kill it manually.
To reproduce with native:
1) Get and start the installer.
2) MSI will popup a small window complaining about incorrect parameters and then
die.
The full installer can be obtained from
http://www.fileplanet.com/89806/download/America's-Army:-Special-Forces-(Overmatch)-v2.7.0
but since it is large, please ask if you only need a small part from the
package. Thanks!

Notes handles most email messages just fine, but every so often (in my case,
several times a day) a message has some characteristics that makes Notes start
up its "NSD" mode that logs whatever problem it's having. Unfortunately, I have
never seen Notes survive doing that; the NSD window pops up, the mouse becomes
an hourglass, and it hangs until I kill -KILL all related processes.
The log file (I'll attach one as soon as I can figure out how) complains about
lots of missing DLLs and ends with:
ERROR (0): exception(0): thread 23 got system exception: ACCESS_VIOLATION
(3221225477)
One message that will crash Notes at will is fairly small and has no
attachments. It might be formatted in something other than plain text (hard to
tell since I can't actually open it in Notes), but so are many other messages
that Notes has no trouble with.
I'll assume I'll be able to add an attachment after I commit the bug report.

able to see the contents of fields which are computed from the entries of

i tested the demo (Live 6.0.1)and it crashes indeed. Yes before exceptions are
thrown, and the crash there's:
0009:Call kernel32.GetEnvironmentVariableA(01291634 "APPDATA",00000000,00000000)
ret=00f601f1
0009:Ret kernel32.GetEnvironmentVariableA() retval=00000000 ret=00f601f1
So i tried to run like:
APPDATA="C:\Program Files\Ableton\Live 6.0.1\Resources" wine Live\ 6.0.1.exe
Surprise, it doesn't crash anymore, but starts up now. Btw, you have to run in
virtual desktop, as it starts with a dialog window behind a splash screen, that
you have to click, in normal mode it seems to hang because of this bug. If the
program works like it should, i don't know, but the menu's at least seem to work.
Maybe the crash is due to a missing registry entry of that environment variable,
but that' s just a guess.

First, displaying the 2D card of "Magic Maps" (for a demo version see URL)
paints above buttons and menue of its window. Clicking at the hidden menue
entries gives a partial repaint of the buttons after the menue has vanished
again.
Additionally the mouse shows odd behaviour: If I click and draw a rectangle at
the 2D card to zoom in, the reaction is normal. But if I try to set or move a
point with the "path" tools, I have to click several dozen pixels away lower
and slightly to the right of the point I'm aiming at, like there was an
invisible internal offset.

hi, this bug is probably invalid. I had exactly the same problem when i
upgraded from fedora3 to fedora5. You should either copy a native glu32.dll
into ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/sytem32 or you should download and install ,and i
hope i remember this correctly, the mesa opengl (development??) packages. (I
don't remember exacltly what package it was, but after installation of the
package glu32.dll.so is built again nicely on my computer)

The thing is I'm using more or less Wine 0.9.22 with the pixelformat patch.
I'm running it on a 64bit Debian system using the 1.0-9625 Nvidia drivers
(though I doubt another driver makes a difference). We have more or less
similar configurations but it works here and not for you.
Perhaps something went wrong during the loading of the opengl library. When
winex11.drv is started it dynamicly loads various OpenGL functions including
glGetIntegerv. That function is used inside X11DRV_wglGetIntegerv, so that
could be the cause of the crash.

Still the same problem. DAOC reports a large number of files are missing or
corrupted. I compared my DAOC directory structure with a windows install of the
game and it turns out I was indeed missing a few folders in there, but replacing
them did nothing to alleviate the error...
However, the game tries to work when you run wine login.dll
Now it gives a graphics error, which will be a subject of another bug report.

As far as searching the Xorg log, we've already decided that we aren't going to
do it like that.
The current method of detecting the card type is likely a good way to do it
considering OpenGL vs DX, and may be similar to what DX10 will do. However,
there may be room for improvement and there may always be detection issues with
older games.
As for detecting video memory, I think we're gonna need standardized driver
level support. Maybe an OpenGL extension can do it...

Please keep this bug for video card detection.
It's been discussed on wine-devel that there are no suitable means to detect

Also Wine doesn't report _exact_ video card type to the application. Instead it
finds a close match and reports that instead.

Yes this is true. We cannot currently detect video ram size currently. We do
have a limited way of detecting the card type, but it will not be exact. We
could possibly improve your card detection. Send a log with WINEDEBUG=+d3d_caps
set. Although your ATI card is listed in the detection code, so the program may
be doing something a bit more unusual. Perhaps the card is too new for the game
to recognize. bleh...
Anyway, go here to fix your ram size reported:

The issue seems to be that WINE is not registering the key-up event when you
release a key. WoW will think that you are still holding down the button because
it didn't receive the key-release.

Thanks a lot for looking into this! I just tried again, clean build, latest
GIT, with your patch (bug #5959, thanks again!) applied - OpenGL applications
still crash. Shouldn't be a problem with the OpenGL drivers, because, as I
said, D3D applications work just fine with Wine, no problems (been playing
Half Life 2 Ep 1 all night). Native Linux OpenGL applications also work
perfectly...
The log I attached doesn't help? I don't really understand most of it, but the
address (0x33fc48) where the exception occurs seems to be OpenGL/ WGL related:

Vitaliy,
Thanks for the response. Please notice in my original post that I did disabled
hyperthreading (HT) so as to eliminate this as the cause. Actually I tested the
failure with HT enabled and with HT disabled. I will look at the ALSA bug.
Also, is there any chance that the SMP problem will be fixed? Most new CPUs
coming out are dual-core. If not, this game will become unusable in the near
future.

First off thanks very much. Wine is a wonderful product. I'm running Adobe
(Macromedia) Contribute 3.11 though wine, installed from an msi. This also
required installing ie6 which I did with by also installing dcom98.
Contribute seems to function well, except that if I have any other contribute
windows open, such as an options screen, and change virtural desktops, when I
get back to contribute it now uses 100% cpu and never seems to come back.
This is in ubuntu 6.06 with the wine packages from
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt dapper main.
