Everything is normal according to the screenshot. The game is too old to know
what it is. I think we should consider the game at fault for the message.

As far as searching the Xorg log, we've already decided that we aren't going to
do it like that.
The current method of detecting the card type is likely a good way to do it
considering OpenGL vs DX, and may be similar to what DX10 will do. However,
there may be room for improvement and there may always be detection issues with
older games.
As for detecting video memory, I think we're gonna need standardized driver
level support. Maybe an OpenGL extension can do it...

Ableton Live 5 worked, supposedly:

but Ableton Live 6 doesn't, at least according to this thread on slashdot:

(I suspect the slashdot poster was trying the demo, so I'm adding keyword
'download'.)
I can't test it myself at the moment, or I'd include more info.

Please keep this bug for video card detection.
It's been discussed on wine-devel that there are no suitable means to detect
amount of video memory.
Also Wine doesn't report _exact_ video card type to the application. Instead it
finds a close match and reports that instead.

Yes this is true. We cannot currently detect video ram size currently. We do
have a limited way of detecting the card type, but it will not be exact. We
could possibly improve your card detection. Send a log with WINEDEBUG=+d3d_caps
set. Although your ATI card is listed in the detection code, so the program may
be doing something a bit more unusual. Perhaps the card is too new for the game
to recognize. bleh...
Anyway, go here to fix your ram size reported:

Thanks a lot for looking into this! I just tried again, clean build, latest
GIT, with your patch (bug #5959, thanks again!) applied - OpenGL applications
still crash. Shouldn't be a problem with the OpenGL drivers, because, as I
said, D3D applications work just fine with Wine, no problems (been playing
Half Life 2 Ep 1 all night). Native Linux OpenGL applications also work
perfectly...
The log I attached doesn't help? I don't really understand most of it, but the

Vitaliy,
Thanks for the response. Please notice in my original post that I did disabled
hyperthreading (HT) so as to eliminate this as the cause. Actually I tested the
failure with HT enabled and with HT disabled. I will look at the ALSA bug.
Also, is there any chance that the SMP problem will be fixed? Most new CPUs
coming out are dual-core. If not, this game will become unusable in the near
future.

Summary: Program runs away when submenus are open and changing
virtural desktops
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.22.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: mchugh19(a)yahoo.com
First off thanks very much. Wine is a wonderful product. I'm running Adobe
(Macromedia) Contribute 3.11 though wine, installed from an msi. This also
required installing ie6 which I did with by also installing dcom98.
Contribute seems to function well, except that if I have any other contribute
windows open, such as an options screen, and change virtural desktops, when I
get back to contribute it now uses 100% cpu and never seems to come back.
This is in ubuntu 6.06 with the wine packages from
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt dapper main.

Do not use -opengl. Blizzard never finished it and stripped it out of the game.
All you see is a badly initialized ddraw mode. We cannot fix it. It's a game
problem.

OK!
Two additional things I did and it ran.
First, I applied the patch for Homeworld Cataclysm which is provided on the
relic website. 1.01
Second I altered the winecfg to use Windows XP settings for default.
Leaving all else as defaults it runs. I do not know WHICH of those two changes
was actually required, but I am betting on the patch.
The fact that it runs in a native W98 environment but not a native W2000
environment unpatched, is telling. I have now played 2 missions and can report
that it plays well under wine.

Winecfg exits when I'm trying to open the audio driver-tab. So I can't select an
audio driver. It doesn't crash, it just exits ( so I can't catch a backtrace
with winedbg, because there is none ).
Console messages:

I know this is arts-related, but I'm running a GNOME-only system.

The patch also improves Reason (pro audio application) quite a bit. It's

glitches when scrolling the interface or opening a pulldown menu are gone.
Definitely an improvement!

Well, that patch by Iulian does work in wine-0.9.22 (it does redraw properly),
I'm attaching it (apply it by "cd wine-0.9.22; patch -p1 < dirty_rectangle.patch").
It makes Heroes 4 slightly faster (the sound doesn't skip any more when you move
the mouse around the map / minimap, but it does skip when you scroll the map as
a whole).
But it's still very buggy, notably winecfg crashes when you go to the "Audio"
tab. wine needs a proper DIB engine, a dirty rectangle hack won't help much.

Summary: inb, outb (and probably others) crash wine
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-dos
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: satz(a)sprynet.com
I have a DOS/VM86 application that attempts to directly use the serial port's
I/O registers. Wine gets an unhandled page fault error. The fault appears to
happen on a pop %es instruction in the code winebuild adds to the dlls after the
call. It seems that that the pop %es is getting sent off into the VM86
INSTR_EmulateInstruction routine.
The failure is completely reproducible. I put together a small .exe to reproduce
the problem that simply does a few outb calls and attempts to read data via inb.
It fails on the first outb.
I have stared at this long enough to realize there is something I am missing on
how VM86 mode works how to interpret the debugging output.
Any help on aiming me in the "right" direction would be appreciated.

The log for builtin msi is identical, with different memory addresses. The log

A few more questions:
Does this program run correctly for you when installed in a clean .wine tree? As
in, without using WineTools or similar? Do you have any DLL overrides in your
system (run winecfg, Libraries tab, should show an empty list if no overrides)?
What version of Windows is your copy of Wine emulating (default is Windows 2000)?

Sounds like you using XGL - it is not compatible with Wine, especially openGL.
In either case this is not a bug, but misconfiguration. Please refer to
wine-user mailing list or #winehq IRC chat room for technical support.

You'll need to tell us what parts work poorly. What, exactly, is failing? What
errors are you seeing? Are there errors in the console?
Also, please perform a regression test to find the source of the errors.

The whole battle.net interface are custom dialog windows. I'm currently
investigating for the reason the dialog windows are not being drawn.
In opengl mode, the whole interface gets drawn once. In gdi, it does not get
drawn at all.

The reason for messed up menus is, that there is not apropriate menu picture
drawn. It's hard for me to explain this, so i'll draw a table, where: STATE
the part of BN which i'm into, DRAWN is menu picture that is drawn, SHOULD is
menu picture that should be drawn.
STATE |DRAWN |SHOULD |
-------|--------------|--------------|
connect|black screen |connect screen|
login |connect screen|login screen |
chat |login screen |chat screen |
quit |chat screen |i don't remember :)
As seen above, drawing is one picture late. Hope it helps. wine 0.9.22

To get the chat software I am talking about, you have to register a eMail Adress
at web.de(it's free). If it is example123(a)web.de write a jabber message to the
jabber account example123(a)web.de . Then example123(a)web.de should get a eMail
that someone has invited him/her to chat with him/her. In this eMail is a link
to the web.de chat program. This program works nice (except some small display
bugs), until you try to login. Than this chat program crash and want to send a
report to web.de (which doesn't work).
I tried the chat program with wine 0.9.18 and 0.9.22. (bye the way: nice work,
when I start it with 0.9.22 there only fixme messages. When I use 0.9.18 there
where error messages there too)

I'm not sure, but I've tested a few OpenGL demos recently (stuff that used to
work a few months ago), they seem to expose similar behaviour now. Those demos
seem to use a partially transparent overlay to simulate a grain effect, and
only this overlay is visible with recent Wine releases - everything "behind"
the overlay is just black/ invisible. Might be the same bug?

Actually the title of the bug is wrong. It must be named pixelshader
regression, because with ps + vs enabled it looks bad. Only vs enabled looks
good.
With current cvs and GLSL you cant see CJ and the rest of the people. So its
got more worse.

Under Wine 0.9.22 Settlers IV is so slow it becomes unplayable. I'm not sure
this is the same bug, as this one is a lot more severe:
The Intro movies do run, but they are so slow you can't really watch them
(something like 0.2 fps; i.e. 12 frames per minute!). In the actual game, in
800x600 resolution, I get around 1.2 fps (i.e. the screen is refreshed roughly a
bit more faster than every second).
I'm running on Gentoo, AMD XP 3100+. The game used to be very much playable
under Debina on an older wine. DRI is working OK; also Settlers4 is using
Software rendering, as hardware rendering has never worked under wine in S4.

I can confirm that this issue exists on my Radeon 9250, using the Mesa DRI
drivers. (ATI has dropped support for the R200 series of cards from its own
drivers, and the final supported version didn't recognise a DFP monitor anyway.)
More specifically, this issue happens when GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object is
enabled, the minimap is open and you then go indoors. This causes the minimap to
turn white and the text to become corrupt. Going outdoors again restores the
minimap, but the only way that anyone knows of (to date) to restore the text is
to restart Warcraft.
The text bug does not happen if you go indoors with the minimap closed.
This bug has been happening for me with every version of Wine that I have
tested. (0.9.18+, I think.)
Since this bug happens with both Mesa and fglrx, I think we can rule out the
kernel modules and DRI. But could the libGL/libGLU libraries still be causing
this? (I think NVidia install its own versions of these libraries, and this bug
doesn't seem to happen for NVidia.)
Has anyone tried to reproduce this using ATI hardware in OpenGL mode under
genuine Windows? Are the same OpenGL extensions supported by the ATI drivers
under Linux and Windows?

Using winecfg and disabling pixel shaders brings performance back up to normal
levels. (obviously with a large sacrafice) While running through the video
stress test, the average framerate went from 20 (with pixel shaders enabled) to
80 (without) but obviously many of the render-to-texture effects were missing
(in fact all of them)
The framerate took a huge hit when it passed by the "predator" the model that's
given the water texture that makes it shimmer. (The model only showed white however)
And no steam is not updating anything. Note CS 1.6 works fine, zero hiccups in
framerate or anything, but with OpenGL as the renderer(I will try d3d to see
what happens).
As for drivers, my native games work beautifully (ut2004, nexuiz (to test pixel
shader support), doom3, quake4-demo)

Invalid. The installer legitimately halts installation because the .NET
Framework 2.0 is not installed. The installer starts up and copies all the
files correctly if I fake the .NET Framework installation, but then fails when
it tries to load msvcr80.dll. We'll have to wait till we have SxS assembly

Don't see anything like that here. Works with the same speed it used to before.
Please make sure steam is not updating any games. And that your drivers setup
properly.

This is a REGRESSION. Running Counter Strike Source with "-dxlevel 70" results
in extremely slow framerates. No sound is enabled at this point. This was
never a problem in 0.9.20. Other direct X levels refuse to work at all
(separate bug).

My main box has similar specs to yours.
1.9 Ghz AMD Barton 2600+
1.3 GB RAM
Radeon 9200 128 MB w/ latest Mesa R200
And it runs fine. Maybe it's a sound problem? Try all sound drivers -- ALSA and
OSS, emulated and full -- in winecfg too.
Although unaccelerated gdi is a bit slow, it really is completely playable on my
system without your described slowdowns.
But my ubuntu "test box" at 700 MHz kicks butt with the accelerated opengl
backend (Nvidia GF 2...)
Accelerated opengl backend is coming for ATI... maybe... someday..

Ok, I'll try regression testing. Another thing to learn. :)
Will post results.
Well, I experienced this "bug" on a P4 1.8GHz with 512MB SDRAM, and Radeon
9200SE. That is plenty powerful for starcraft, I would say.
Here is what I think might help... I would like to be able to play Starcraft. :)

can you get your patch into upstream arts? then it will automatically be
distributed to all distros.
however, until that happens i suggest that winecfg should detect the arts error
and just disable the arts component in the audio tab.

Hmm, I don't see any libsicuuc at all:
neil@x2-42 ~ $ locate libsic
neil@x2-42 ~ $
That might have something to do with the issue.

The problem seems to be that it is trying to link with /usr/lib/libsicuuc.a
and not /usr/lib32/libsicuuc.a. It doesn't work when it finds the 64-bit
version. Maybe Gentoo works because it doesn't have a 64-bit version of the
library?
This is very reminiscent of the Freetype issue as well.
I take back the idea that this is a new problem, as I now remember working
around it in my Makefile before converting from CVS to Git. I must have blown
away my hack when cleaning up.

Starting with Wine 0.9.22, every OpenGL application I try to run immediately
crashes. I also tried the latest Wine version via GIT, same results. D3D apps
work just fine, though (better than ever, actually). With the demo Iconoclast
by ASD¹, all I get is:

wine: Unhandled illegal instruction at address 0x33fc48 (thread 0009),
starting debugger...

This application used to work last time I checked. I get the same message with
every OpenGL application I tried - several demos, games and applications.

"it is wine's bug because wine is calling arts on machines that do not use arts."
That's not exactly true. Wine is merely making arts available if the arts libs
are installed. The user decides whether to use arts with winecfg. You can use
arts without kde, if you get around the bug.
Look at the arts patch that I posted. It fixes the bug by creating the temp
folder it needs. Wine does not know anything about the temp folder nor should it
do anything about it. My opinion is this all lies in the arts code so that is
where it should be fixed. Slackware includes this patch, and maybe other distros
(hence recent discussion about which distros work right) so we should consider
this is the way to go.
