Ok, I'll remove winetools and try again. I only wanted to use it as a
comparison, since it had the proper behavior when installed through that
route. I'll try specifying more dll overrides as well.

I can confirm this is a problem with Wine 0.9.20 (using the prebuilt Ubuntu package). However, interestingly enough this did not appear for me until I upgraded my linux kernel from 2.4.27 to 2.6.8. At least, the symptoms didn't - for all I know the error messages were there always.
At this point, sound is almost completely disabled in SL. When it works, it is choppy and prone to stuttering. Most of the time, all sounds come out as a single click.

boxes of windows appear and after some seconds wine falls.
Log is in the attach.
I thought, that there is a problem with mfc42.dll. I set native dll and changed
settings in winecfg, but the error appears any way.
So I think this bug is in x11drv.

A tarball with two logfiles and pdfs. One with the default papersize A4, the

I tried the virtual pdf printer that you suggested Detlef. It defaults to A4
and yes the output looks ok for me :-) Changing the papersize is still a
problem. The printout looks like always A4 is selected, regardless what I
choose in the printer dialog. Maybe using native printui will help, I try that
when I'm back from my vacation.
Another thing is, that the default papersize (that is A4) is listed
as "Letter", strange because my lexmark defaults really to US Letter and this
is listed as "US Letter" (not "Letter").
I tried using the generic.ppd that didn't change anything, I think I must
recompile Wine after renaming cups.h.

Summary: wine mailing-list <-> usenet gateway non-functional?
Product: WineHQ.com
Version: unspecified
Platform: All

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: misc-web

ReportedBy: hoehle(a)users.sourceforge.net
Hi,
I believe the gateway between
usenet:comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine
<-> wine-users mailing list
is subtly broken.
http://www.winehq.com/site/forums says:
"This newsgroup is connected to the Wine-Users mailing list".
Yet messages appear in one or the other.
An example: the thread "suse 10.1 amd64 wine 9.19 dont create .wine"
appears in Google (5 messages)
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine/browse_thread…
as well as my local newsserver (4 messages), but there's nothing like this in
the archives:
http://www.winehq.com/pipermail/wine-users/2006-August/thread.html
OTOH, the thread "bug 4794: Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds & Wine 0.9.19"
is in the August archives, but nothing in Google nor at my site.
The message "PTgui.exe runs fine on one Kubuntu 6.0.6 pc but not on another"
appears once in the September archives, but there's a thread with 5 messages in
Usenet. Actually, it looks like the initial message was posted independently to
the list (by Harry vad der Wolf) and to usenet (surfer63 pseudonym, but same
content).
There are many other cases like these. I just choose them randomly.
I'd very much appreciate a functional gateway. I tend to prefer newsgroups for
asking help here and there because they don't require me going to a subscribe /
confirm (+ unsubscribe some time later) cycle.
Regards,
Jorg Hohle

winecfg's "Libraries" tab supports setting specific libraries as native-loading,

WINEDLLOVERRIDES supports specifying only two of those options:

I would find it useful if WINEDLLOVERRIDES allowed specifying all the options
you can set from winecfg's "Libraries" tab (especially the "disable" one).

Fixed by this patch:

The patch addresses the same one from my original hack... and apparently sets

Thanks Ivan.

test based om current "implementation" of Validatevertexshader
test is based on current implementation of Validatevertexshader:
#include <d3d8.h>
#include "wine/test.h"
static BOOL (WINAPI *ValidateVertexShader)(LPVOID,int,int,LPVOID);
static void test_ValidateVertexShader(void)
{
BOOL ret;
ret=ValidateVertexShader(0,0,0,1);
ok(ret==1,"ValidateVertexShader returned %d but expected 1\n",ret);
}
START_TEST(d3d8_main)
{
HMODULE d3d8_handle = LoadLibraryA( "d3d8.dll" );
ValidateVertexShader = (void*)GetProcAddress (d3d8_handle,
"ValidateVertexShader" );
test_ValidateVertexShader();
}
Results: passes in wine ('wine d3d8_crosstest4.exe d3d8_main'), crashes with
native d3d8.dll and i guess on windows too(' WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n" wine
d3d8_crosstest d3d8_main')
I hope these 2 tests make it a bit more assumable that ValidateVertexShader
takes 5 instead of 4 parameters (unless i did something horribly wrong ;))

test with 5 paramaters
Ok, here's another attempt, one day this bug will be fixed ;)
Test attached is:
#include <d3d8.h>
#include "wine/test.h"
static HRESULT (WINAPI *ValidateVertexShader)(LPVOID,int,LONG,int,LPVOID);
static void test_ValidateVertexShader(void)
{
HRESULT ret;
ret=ValidateVertexShader(0,0,0,1,0);
ok(ret==E_FAIL,"ValidateVertexShader returned %lx but expected E_FAIL\n",ret);
}
START_TEST(d3d8_main)
{
HMODULE d3d8_handle = LoadLibraryA( "d3d8.dll" );
ValidateVertexShader = (void*)GetProcAddress (d3d8_handle,
"ValidateVertexShader" );
test_ValidateVertexShader();
}
I'm just passing dumb zero's to the function, except the 4th parameter, which
takes a 1. The 1 is for example passed by
http://www.codesampler.com/source/dx8_vs11_shader_simple.zip
This test fails in wine (run 'wine d3d8_crosstest5.exe d3d8_main')
However, you can just call ValidateVertexShader from a native d3d8.dll in wine,
so WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n" wine d3d8_crosstest.exe d3d8_main succeeds just
fine.
I'll attach hereafter the test based on _current_ "implementation" of
ValidatevertexShader, and that fails with native d3d8.dll

With Wine 0.9.20 and VCDEasy 3.10 (trial version) it comes much further. The bug

I have not looked to see if your tests cover these cases. In both cases none of
the apps are maximized. Also none of wine's built in programs like cmdlgtst will
duplicate the problem.
It looks like z-order problem is the cause of blank modal dialogs. Using
winefile in virtual desktop and using it to start switcher cad III
http://www.linear.com/designtools/softwareRegistration.jsp if you open a new
document and then open the add dialog (nand gate icon) if the modal dialog pops
up over the area that winefile resides in then the dialog is on top but it is
none of the controls on the dialog are drawn.
Also with virtual desktop and winefile used to start a delphi 3 application when
you close a D3 modal dialog the focus(window boarder highlighted) shifts to
winefile but the D3 app's window is still on top. Clicking on the D3
unhighlights winefile so no window have a highlight. It requires a clock on wine
file then the D3 application to get the D3 window it to be highlighted.

Seems you are missing a MSVCIRT.dll file. Either this app cannot copy or load
it for some reason, or the setup program doesn't bring this dll at all.
You can always try downloading installer of VisualC Runtime libraries
redistributable installer [2], running it, extracting the redistributable exe,
running the latter and then going back to you program.

>Do you want to fix those errors on wine or should I mark them todo_wine?
I only meant to fix *one* bug! I guess you would have to mark them todo_wine, as
I have no idea why those tests would fail on wine. All my attempts to understand
wine end up at a call to USER_Driver->foo() at which point I get lost.
What's suspicious is that test 10 passes on wine; the only difference between
tests 2, 10 and 18 is the window state of the window, so I guess that wine
doesn't want to send the foreground window to the bottom unless it's minimised.

This is the patch I used to fix the problem. winegcc.c has the usage of -lwine
hardcoded, which is why it had to be patched as well. My patch is probably not
sufficient for all platforms, as I assume a .so extension. I do not know if
wine is build on platforms with use different extensions for libwine. However,
I expect this patch is sufficient for wine developers to see the problem and
understand how to fix it.

Summary: Wine build uses the wrong libwine.so file
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.20.
Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-tools
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: docbill+bugzilla(a)freeshell.org
I have been investigating why whenever I attempted to upgrade Wine that my build
would fail with unresolved symbols, even though it apparently works for
thousands of others without problems. I finally figured out the problem is the
build will use the version of libwine.so previously installed, instead of the
new version of libwine.so from the source code being built.
The fundamental flaw in the build process is the path to the shared library is
specified as: -L$(TOPBUILDDIR)/libs/wine -lwine
However, this simply appends $(TOPBUILDDIR)/libs/wine to the library paths and
does not guarentee that libwine.so will be taken from that path. In fact quite
the opposite, if an old version of libwine.so has already been installed in the
standard library path, that version will be used instead.
I have verified this bug has existed in the last few releases of wine (probabyl
much longer) and the current snapshots.

Strange, that wineps get's "DefaultResolution = 0" during ParsePPD,
but i have no Idea, if this affect the Output.
I added a cups-pdf - Printer with "HP LaserJet 5M Postscript (recommended)"
as Driver and got "DefaultResolution = 600".
I suggest to use an A4-Printer as default
(The PPD from your Lexmark E312 has "DefaultPageSize: Letter")
Can you please Retry with the Driver from cups-pdf.
Vendor: "Generic" Driver: "postscript color printer rev3b"
The Log-Size can be reduced with:
"grep --line-number -v WriteSpool full.log >smaller.log"
When the app uses the default Print-Dialog (+commdlg) and
the Checkmark "Redirect to a File" is disable or hiden, you can
modify "dlls/comdlg32/printdlg.c" to display and Enable them
(983,985,1132,1134: PD_DISABLEPRINTTOFILE and PD_HIDEPRINTTOFILE)
Another way to redirect the Postscript-Code is a simple Reg-Key in :
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Wine\Printing\Spooler"
Add a String with the Portname ("LPR:lexmark" as example) as Name and the
full Unix-Path as Value
You can also overwrite the PPD-File for a Printer:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Wine\Printing\PPD Files"
Add a String with the Printername ("lexmark" as example) as Name and the
full Unix-Path to the PPD-File as Value
Is the Output different, when using "generic.ppd" from Wine?

I have an Intel i810 on-board chip, no ATI, and I observed a similar error
trying to update from 0.9.19 to 0.9.20.
I810: Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810,
Are you sure only ATI is affected?
The error I see is from 'Supreme Snowboarding' (don't know Cloud):
X Error of failed request: GLXUnsupportedPrivateRequest
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 17 (X_GLXVendorPrivateWithReply)
Serial number of failed request: 384
Current serial number in output stream: 384
The program does not manage to open its window anymore in 0.9.20.
If you can please confirm that the GIT patch is more general than #ifdef ATI,
then I need not post a separate bug-report.

Also, the reason I assume this has to do with dinput is because of the following:
When I start the game, it appears the focus of the window is not set on the
game, so when I click inside of it, I get the message "DirectInput Initialized"
inside of Soldat.
You can get the same affect in Windows by alt-tabbing out, back in, and then
clicking on the game. The only difference is that now in Linux, the mouse
doesn't respond, despite the message being displayed. I've tried using the
virtual desktop option in combination with fullscreen settings in Soldat, with
no difference.

IMHO changes to server code and message handling can break the input too. In

If you don't know where the good point was, there's not much more to do than go
through the dinput patches one by one around the time that you thought it
worked, and test them to try find where it did work.
You can't use the regression analysis techniques described in the Wine developer
manual unless you have both a good and bad point to start with.

I just installed Steam and when I run it it freezes at the 26% mark (hence I am
posting here), but when I double click on the desktop icon (as I had selected in
the install) I get the following error in the form of a popup window:
Steam.exe (main exception): Win32 StructuredException at 0040BD70 : Attempt to
read from virtual address 5 without appropriate access rights.
I tried the following from the command line, as suggested:
"Use
wine C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamTmp.exe SelfUpdate "C:\Program
Files\Steam\Steam.exe" 14
or play around with the filenames (go into steam folder and use)
wine SteamTmp.exe SelfUpdate "Steam.exe" 14
That fixed it for me, but its still a problem with wine :)"
But I still get the error message (and no good output to the terminal, although
I'll post it below just in case)
By the way, I'm using wine 0.9.20

Running under a virtual desktop does fix the keyboard problem(!!), however, I
will leave this unconfirmed as I would like to see if this can be fixed while
the game is integrated into the window manager (and consequently is allowed to

Summary: Wine 0.9.20 breaks Everquest 2
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.20.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: wine(a)kapila.force9.co.uk
Wine 0.9.19 allowed Everquest 2 to run as far as entering the 3d part of the
game (ie putting a character in the world) at which point there was a crash in
the EverQuest2.exe
However it looks like 0.9.20 has broken this so that you cannot get that far.
When running normally, you get back ground music, and about 3 full screen
images are displayed, followed by a login prompt. With 9.20, you only get a
black screen. (music still plays.)
Replacing the wined3d.dll.so with the 0.9.19 version allows it to work again, so
it appears that something in the 0.9.20 build of this dll is causing the problem.
So far it appears the issue was not introduced by changes to directx.c or
surface.c so it must be in one of
dlls/wined3d/arb_program_shader.c
dlls/wined3d/device.c
dlls/wined3d/drawprim.c
dlls/wined3d/glsl_shader.c

GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife), an application for managing geocaching info,
worked with a few bugs under wine version 0.9.16. After this version, GSAK will
install, but will fail to run after downloading the ActiveX component. Some new
fixmes appear that didn't appear in 0.9.16, and eventually raise an exception
which might receive a bogus value (0x0eedfade) for one of its parameters.
The application does appear to get a little further (the main window begins to
appear) when the native shdocvw.dll is used, but this generates numerous fixmes
and also eventually crashes the program.

Ok, as of Wine 0.9.19, Soldat does not receive mouse input. The bug still exists
in 0.9.20. I do, however, know that a certain patch had fixed it, sometime after
0.9.19, but a patch after THAT seems to have broken it again. I am sure of this
because some days (or same, can't remember exactly) after the release of 0.9.19,
I updated my GIT. So GIT was update to 0.9.19, and a little more. I had run
Soldat, and it worked perfectly, with some older bugs (the 0.9.18 start up bug,
and 0.9.1-0.9.17 polygon render bug) fixed. However, installing the official
version of Wine 0.9.19 via apt-get, I found that Soldat would not receive the
mouse input. And unfortunately, I had update my GIT again, only to find that the
input broke there too.
So I'm currently testing a bunch commits at certain intervals to see if I can
pinpoint the broken patch.

If I try to print the printout is a little too big and shifted to the left.
Therefore it is cut off at the left side. This happens with two apps (GIS
Software and CAD Viewer both proprietary and unfortunately there is no demo
version available), others like my banking software print like a charm.
After some debugging I think, that maybe the ImageableArea is not set
correctly or the app overrides the settings for the margins of my printer.
When I change the margins in Linux (kubuntu if it matters), notepad uses this
margins but the other app doesn't.
I attach some logfiles with +print,+psdrv, +winspool.
BTW: I tried various Wine versions (from 2004109 to 0.9.20 ;-) The error stays
the same.

This is happening with "Action Request System" (ARS) software by Remedy,
unfortunately not free.
When clicking into a text field which already has text in it, the text is cleared.
Through trying several versions of riched20.dll, I found out that this happened
between 0_9_17 and 0_9_18. The problem is in the WM_SETFONT-handling.
With trial-and-error I found that there the
if (bRepaint)
ME_UpdateRepaint(editor);
causes the problem. If I replace it with
if (bRepaint) {
/*ME_SendOldNotify(editor, EN_CHANGE);*/
ME_Repaint(editor);
ME_SendOldNotify(editor, EN_UPDATE);
ME_SendSelChange(editor);
}
everything works, so ME_SendOldNotify(editor, EN_CHANGE); seems to cause the
problem. Unfortunately I couldn't find what that does yet...
Let me know if you need any traces.

Summary: DC++, blank window after switching workspace in gnome

Platform: PC
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: website-bugs
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: magnus.ahlberg(a)gmail.com
I've had this issue with DC++ and, as far as I can tell, only with this application.
It works quite well although as soon as I switch to another workspace in gnome
and then back again, the contents of the DC++ window is blank and if I move a
window over it, it "smears" all over the DC++ window, quite normal when a window
doesn't redraw itself.
This bug also occured on my earlier computer wich ran a different window
manager. The only similarity that I can think of is that they both use an ATi
graphics card, although the old one used the open source driver and this one is
using the closed source driver.
No output is generated when switching desktops as far as I can tell so I don't
really know what else to post here. If you think that some log or anything else
can be of use please tell me and I will post it.
You do a great job.

copy the image? How can I get a copy of it to reproduce the bug? How can I start
the software? Is there any build options for the wine to reproduce the bug?
What's the version of wine that has the bug? The version says unspecified in the

Sorry, yeah, you already have a diff there. It would be better to make it from
the top level wine directory. eg:
diff -urp dlls/user/winpos.c.1 dlls/user/winpos.c > patch.diff
You don't need to use Git (though some people find that easier), you can just
send your patch to wine-patches(a)winehq.org as described on the sending-patches
page. (It won't be pick it up from here.)

What you are saying is there is a change between ALSA 1.0.11 and 1.0.12 that is
now causing distorted sound. You really ought to find the exact change that did
it, so we can understand better the problem.
You can look here as a start:

Summary: Distorted sound with ALSA 1.0.12
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.20.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P5
Component: wine-directx-dsound
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: elton(a)schiert.net
When I use ALSA-driver version 1.0.12 or 1.0.13rc1 the sound in wine-apps gets
distorted. I tried several games including Diablo II, Baldurs's Gate II, Heroes
of Might and Magic V,... and they all behaved the same: The sound kinda' plays
but there are lots of little cracks every second. All games have acceptable
sound-quality when running ALSA 1.0.11
Switching Hardware Acceleration from Full to Emulation changes nothing, but
enabling Driver Emulation helps: I think the sound is not exactly as good as
with 1.0.11 but it's definitely a lot better than without Driver Emulation
(Note: What does Driver Emulation do anyway?).
All this only happens when using Wine's ALSA-driver. Using the OSS-driver the
sound is the same as before (Note2: I don't have any OSS drivers installed on my
system, just ALSA's built-in OSS-emulation).
I don't really know if this is a Wine-bug at all. I tried other native ALSA-apps
like mediaplayers and as far as I can tell Wine is the only application that
shows this kind of sound distortion. Anyway, here's some info on my system:
Fujitsu-Siemens M3438G Laptop
Realtek/Intel High Definition Audio, chip: ALC880
Kubuntu Dapper 6.06 LTS, kernel 2.6.15-26-686
ALSA-driver module: snd-hda-intel

Ask packager of whatever distro you are using. Wine does not support that sort
of intergration atm. So it must be some custom work in your distro.
My guess is that author forgot `winepath -w $1`.

Summary: Gothic crashes on nvidia cards when entering a new level

I start Gothic with default settings(but without Music and without Videos
(renamed $gamedir/_work/DATA/video)).
I can walk around in the world, but when I enter another level (From the outdoor
map you can enter into some cave-maps) like the old mine, the level loads, but
after I make a single step inside the new level, the game crashes (resolution
change, puzzled "screenshot" and after about a minute the game quits)
error messages on stderr, that appear right when the game crashes:

I tried to complete some code in msvcrt.dll using some tables i found here
http://sparcs.kaist.ac.kr/~tokigun/article/vcmangle.html, but I have no idea
what i did. The only change was that the unknown operator/type messages
did/could not appear anymore, because msvcrt.dll "knew" them.
I did test gothic with several versions of wine, that use the newer ddraw code
(0.9.16-0.9.20) and I also applied the patch to version 0.9.14 and 0.9.15 and I
always had the same crash then.
The game also crashed on wine 0.9.16 (I did not test it with the newest version
of wine) when I walked around in the world for about 7 minutes without switching
levels. It seems that it can't crash, when I am inside a chat dialog with a NPC,
but it crashes as soon as you leave the chat dialog if time is up.
I did test wine on 2 debian sid systems with different nvidia-cards.
The game does not seem to crash after 7 minutes if you use wine 0.9.14 without
the ddraw patch. As far as I remember the game crashes when switching levels
anyway, but it crashes "faster" - the game quits and the desktop appears after
level loading is complete, so maybe the reason is another.
I could test it on an ubuntu dapper system (wine 0.9.20) with an ati card
(fglrx-drivers) too and the game did not crash when switching levels. I also
heard of 2 other ati card owners that are able to play gothic without such a crash.
My system: debian sid i386, kernel: 2.6.17-1-686 (standard kernel image)
Memory: 1 GB
CPU: Intel P4 3.0 Ghz (Hyperthreding enabled, I thought that the crash maybe
some kind of deadlock that only appears on SMP Systems, but i did also test it
on an AMD 3500 with debian sid i386 with the same result)
wine configuration dll overrides for:
dmband.dll dmime.dll dmloader.dll dmstyle.dll dmsynth.dll dmusic.dll dmcompos.dll
I had to use these on wine >=0.9.19 even with music disabled, to get the game to
run.
Version of Gothic: 1.08k german
nvidia driver version: 8762
