Rhinoceros NURBS 3D modelling software installs flawlessly, but does not start. A failure on read access at address null is reported. This is quite strange. They recommended "turning off vertex shaders" to fix the bug. It SEEMS for the time being, that this HAS worked around the error. However, since it is still a bug in wine, I'm going to leave it as unresolved. Additionally, I kept the pixel shaders enabled so the flashlight would work and it LOOKS fine in the game and I have YET to have a crash. Try and switching to virtual desktop in winecfg and run the game. Interestingly enough, the game played just fine, no crash, no nothing. I was testing to see if it could play again (after like 10 restarts in 10 days of not playing at all...not even loading the game up), and it worked better than a charm. Then it crashed after about an hour of gameplay...hey...it happens. Then after a reboot, I ran it the same way I always do, and it came up as 1024x768 (which is correct) but in the upperleft part of the screen and leaving my desktop in tact. What I mean to say is that it was NOT running fullscreen (as I have told it to with the launch options). So it loaded and I quit, openned up the games list in steam again and ran it again: same result. However, after I quit HL2 again, I decided to restart steam, maybe it was a wineserver bug. System crash... Lame. So I tried to reboot only to have a problem with fsck's manditory 30 day check and my AMDx2 processor creating kernel panic EVERY TIME (another bug for another forum, but sort of icing on the cake, none-the-less). After working around the fsck problem, I booted up and the screen loaded the same way, the error way, only this time I exitted steam after I quit HL2. I'll try a restart thinking maybe it was just a wine error or something. But minimizing to taskbar is the normal way in GT, also on windows though there is a systray-icon(both in windows and wine). For only having it in systray icon you have to use the "x"/close-button(though it doesn't work in wine either). But after minimizing, it doesn't bump up again correctly, it is only showing something wird in a box. IrfanView was working before for me. I get this error when running Fecora Core 5 x86-64, and when I run it with FC5 32-bit on an other computer, I just get some garbage in the terminal. I tried to run it in Windows 98 and Windows 2000 mode without success. However, interestingly enough this did not appear for me until I upgraded my linux kernel from 2.4.27 to 2.6.8. At least, the symptoms didn't - for all I know the error messages were there always. At this point, sound is almost completely disabled in SL. When it works, it is choppy and prone to stuttering. It defaults to A4 and yes the output looks ok for me :-) Changing the papersize is still a problem. The printout looks like always A4 is selected, regardless what I choose in the printer dialog. Maybe using native printui will help, I try that when I'm back from my vacation. Another thing is, that the default papersize (that is A4) is listed as "Letter", strange because my lexmark defaults really to US Letter and this is listed as "US Letter" (not "Letter"). Also with virtual desktop and winefile used to start a delphi 3 application when you close a D3 modal dialog the focus(window boarder highlighted) shifts to winefile but the D3 app's window is still on top. Clicking on the D3 unhighlights winefile so no window have a highlight. I finally figured out the problem is the build will use the version of libwine.so previously installed, instead of the new version of libwine.so from the source code being built. The fundamental flaw in the build process is the path to the shared library is specified as: -L$(TOPBUILDDIR)/libs/wine -lwine However, this simply appends $(TOPBUILDDIR)/libs/wine to the library paths and does not guarentee that libwine.so will be taken from that path. In fact quite the opposite, if an old version of libwine.so has already been installed in the standard library path, that version will be used instead. You can get the same affect in Windows by alt-tabbing out, back in, and then clicking on the game. The only difference is that now in Linux, the mouse doesn't respond, despite the message being displayed. When running normally, you get back ground music, and about 3 full screen images are displayed, followed by a login prompt. With 9.20, you only get a black screen. (music still plays.) Replacing the wined3d.dll.so with the 0.9.19 version allows it to work again, so it appears that something in the 0.9.20 build of this dll is causing the problem. The bug still exists in 0.9.20. I do, however, know that a certain patch had fixed it, sometime after 0.9.19, but a patch after THAT seems to have broken it again. I am sure of this because some days (or same, can't remember exactly) after the release of 0.9.19, I updated my GIT. So GIT was update to 0.9.19, and a little more. I had run Soldat, and it worked perfectly, with some older bugs (the 0.9.18 start up bug, and 0.9.1-0.9.17 polygon render bug) fixed. However, installing the official version of Wine 0.9.19 via apt-get, I found that Soldat would not receive the mouse input. And unfortunately, I had update my GIT again, only to find that the input broke there too.
