winetools used the following override:
*=builtin,native
Which meant that most of the Wine's dlls were replaced with native. The patch
that you found removes this kind of override (exactly for this reason).
So now you have most dlls as builtins. Which means it's not a regression (you
have to prove it worked with all builtins). There are could be lots and lots of
problems. Or there could be few. This is why this bug is invalid. And this is
why any use of winetools will be regarded as invalid bug.

I can confirm that the program produces no sound. I can also confirm from
dsound and wave traces that it never tries to play sound and never even tries to
create a sound buffer. Either I'm doing something wrong or there is something
wrong with the GUI. There could be something about the sound device
capabilities it doesn't like but it doesn't complain or write out an error log.

When running the ADRIFT generator (which can be found at
http://www.adrift.org.uk/cgi/new/adrift.cgi ) I get an error when I try to
register the application (you can do this under help>about generator). It seems
like everything is going fine, but even when I put in a valid registration
number it says it's incorrect and gives several messages like:
fixme:variant:VarCat types (number) / (number) not supported
This is a fixme bug so I guess it's pretty important? You can contact the author
of the application, Campbell Wild, at the website - he is aware of the bug and
uses WINE himself. He could probably give you a valid user name and registration
number to test.

Overrides with +crypt,+winsock added to the debug line
Here is the log with crypt32, msasn1, schannel, secur32, riched20, riched32,
rpcrt4, and rsaenh as overrides and the command line:
"WINEDEBUG=err+all,fixme+all,warn+all,-nls,+crypt,+winsock wine googletalk.exe"
(+crypt, +winsock added).
I don't think the output is any different because the +all's should show all of
the errors. including winsock and crypt, but I may be misunderstanding how the
WINEDEBUG variable works so I am posting the log anyway.
Is this what you needed? Also, I forgot to mention that the dlls are coming
from my WindowsXP Home edition.

------- Additional Comments From ajp(a)princeswalk.fsnet.co.uk 2006-26-06 15:40 -------
I have produced +loaddll traces from two versions of wine.
One, which I will refer to as MnyGood, is the last version
I compiled using the git repositary. MnyGood runs Money
2004 quite well. The other, which I will call MnyBad is the
current 0.9.16 release.
Using the traces I produced unique sorted lists showing which
dlls were loaded 'builtin' or 'native' by each of these
releases. Note that the MnyBad lists are bound to have fewer
loaded dlls because it 'crashes' before the point at which
some dlls would be loaded. I will attach these lists.
The MnyGood lists show a number of dlls loaded 'native' that
MnyBad loads 'builtin'. Of course, I do not know why this
is. I do not know how Wine decides, or what part winetools
has in this. Perhaps someone can explain this for me. All
I know is that I did not have any overrides specified in
winecfg for msmoney.exe when I created these lists.
After creating the lists, I experimented with overrides in
winecfg to try and get 0.9.16 to run MSMoney 2004. As I have
said, without any overrides it crashes. By 'crashes', I
mean that it terminates with a standard dialog with the
message:
"Microsoft Money has encountered a problem and needs to
close"
See the attachment to Bug 4560 for an example of this.
When I added an override to load the native msxml3.dll,
it did not crash. It give a message
"There is a problem with your Windows Security settings.
Money cannot open a data file or create a new file."
With an override to load the native rsaenh.dll, it gets
past this point but hangs 'Opening Money File'. If
X-kill it, it then 'crashes' with this error:
wine: Call from 0x7fc2eb50 to unimplemented function
msvcrt.dll._mbsspnp, aborting
So I added an override for msvcrt.dll. With this it
runs further, loading my Money 'home page', then
crashes. As it then has
fixme:wininet:InternetGetConnectedState always
returning LAN connection.
in the +loaddll trace, I would like to try loading the
native wininet.dll, but the override in winecfg is
always ignored and it is loaded 'builtin'.
This is as far as I have got. Please suggest any further
actions/test that might be useful.

Interesting. Could you add a +crypt trace to see why rsaenh is failing on
CryptAcquireContext?
I'm also curious about this entry:
warn:winsock:wsaErrno errno 11, (Resource temporarily unavailable).
warn:winsock:WSARecvFrom -> ERROR 10035
Maybe a +winsock trace too?
Also, discussions about why you want to run google talk aren't germane to this
bug. It should run, whether or not reasonable alternatives exist.

IIRC). I've checked only BG2 DVD and 2 of 3 installation methods - full and
minimum.
Game looks playable - I've created new character and played few minutes.
Besides few minor annoyances (double cursor, unability to switch to fullscreen
- maybe it's problem with wine config and/or some mess with X/Xgl servers)
there is one serious bug - game crash if user choose profession with kits (e.
g. warrior, mage) while creating character. I will report this bug later.

yes, it is a regression since with WINE 0.9.12 it works, not with wine 0.9.13. I
begun a regression test, and I concluded that the regression is between May 8
and May 12. But there are several regressions in this period. So I did not
manage to find the patch which cause the regression. Hope that helps.

Very strange. I just made sure to rm -rf .wine, then ran the installer again.
The default value is set.

See also bug 2414 and bug 2575, which also have an error like

I'm betting the OLE problem is the main one, or at least really
worth fixing, so I'm changing the category on this bug.

I'm using binary packages for Slackware as provided on winehq.org website.
For example, this Tomb Raider 2 demo
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,4438,00.asp
Inside the game itself, I enable hardware acceleration, 1024x768 hicolor and
fullscreen.
Under wine 0.9.15, the gameplay is smooth without any lag whatsoever.
Under wine 0.9.16, I have 99% CPU utilization and it feels like only 5 frames
per second.
Turning sound off (from within game), does not help. Also changing settings
(windowed vs fullscreen, resolution, etc) does not change speed at all. E.g. at
320x200 resolution the speed is still extremely slow. I removed the binary
0.9.16 package, re-installed 0.9.15 and verified that game speed returns to
normal. Installed 0.9.16 and again, speed dropped.
Same problem occurs in a few other games, however this Tomb Raider demo is the
only one that I found to be publicly available.

In windows, download the Windows Scripting Host 5.6 for Win2K
installer from Microsoft. Reboot into Linux, then install as follows:
rm -rf .wine
notepad (and quit immediately)
cp MFC42.DLL .wine/drive_c/windows/system32/
wine installers/WindowsXP-Windows2000-Script56-KB917344-x86-enu.exe
The install completes successfully. Now try to run it:
wine .wine/drive_c/windows/system32/cscript.exe
This should print a banner, but doesn't.
Installing DCOM98 and setting ole32 to native as follows rescues it:
winecfg (set win98, and set ole32 to native only)
wine DCOM98.EXE
wine .wine/drive_c/windows/system32/cscript.exe
The latter command now prints a banner as expected.

fixme:richedit:RichEditANSIWndProc WM_SETFONT: stub
The app starts correctly and runs perfectly, but when I try to submit a text
field nothing happens, no terminal output and the text doesn't submit. The text
field is a chatbox part of a a small chat program.
Now I'm assuming this happens to other app which use text input...
The way I fixed it:
Overrided the native dll.
Downloaded the native dll riched20.dll. I copied this to:
wine/drive_c/windows/system32/riched20.dll
And ran winecfg > Libraries > New override for that dll..
Restarted the app. no error in terminal and the Enter key worked...
Hope this will get fixed by default..
Thanks for the great free software!!!

I think it's a arts/distro problem. From one of the arts source files:
if (!mcop_dir)
mcop_dir = locate_mcop_dir();
}
if (!mcop_dir)
{
system("lnusertemp socket");
mcop_dir = locate_mcop_dir();
}
if (!mcop_dir)
{
arts_fatal("can't create mcop directory");
}
You can clearly see that it needs "lnusertemp" to setup that dir. But that
program is part of kdelibs package.

I think I explained the problem a bit poorly. The game does not hang; it
gives a busy cursor, and the music continues playing. It seems like it is
waiting for a message about the connection termination being successful.
These are the errors on the console
fixme:winsock:convert_sockopt Unknown SOL_SOCKET optname 0x2003

terminate the game after some time.

My user was part of the "disk" group. I removed him from it and now the MBR
does not get screwed up. I can try to post a dump of the good and bad MBR if it
will help.
Also, its odd that now my laptop seems to take longer to boot up. I wouldnt
think that wine could do anything to cause the BIOS problems, but since the MBR
got written to I have had this problem. Its a Dell laptop (I8600) that goes
through a fast boot if nothing has changed in the BIOS or the system wasnt
shutdown durning a BIOS bootup. But now, it takes about 4 secs to go through
boot up (compared to about 1 sec) no matter what.

logs for googletalk using various dll overrides
Ok, a number of things:
1. I was doing my testing earlier under a amd64 gentoo install. For these
tests I did a clean install of x86 ubuntu, just to be sure the "ELF32 Binary"
errors were wine's and not mine. The results seem to be the same however.
2. I am not sure if it is something new with wine or something new with the new
googletalk builds but it now seems to require a dll override of riched20 and
riched32. Without these overrides, no text shows up on the screen.
3. I am aware that googletalk *text chat* works with gaim and all other
jabber-compliant clients. I am also aware that there are other VOIP tools for
linux. I want the voice features of googletalk on linux so I can talk with my
friends and do not want to ask them to install Skype, etc. Anyway, that is a
different discussion different discussion.
4. Ok, I ran a bunch of tests using different dll override combinations. All
of the overrides use riched20 and riched32. and were obtained using the line
"WINEDEBUG=err+all,fixme+all,warn+all,-nls wine googletalk.exe". (I was getting
an endless stream of nls errors which I think have little to do with the
problem, so I suppressed them for sanity's sake).
Also, I was getting errors about rsaenh so I threw that in a couple of times.
I think that might be what needs to be implemented to get this working.
Every single combination gave the same result: the app locked up while trying
to connect and had to be killed (except for with ole32 which crashed on
startup).
Combinations tried:

Yes, they're dynamic. If wineserver is the only thing that knows
the list of Wine processes, so be it, we'll have to ask
wineserver when handing a read of HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA/230.

The hard part comes after the reading of Counters. After it reads counters, it
tries to open keys in HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA, which is like a virtual registry
hive. Implementing that is what would be tricky, as we'd (probably) have to add
that to wineserver. From the site listed:
"Unlike regular registry keys such as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, the data retrieved
from HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA isn't file-based, nor is it persistent. Instead, when
you query the registry for performance information, the registry code reads the
information from system internal data structures. What this means is that the
performance data will be different each time you query the registry. By the time
the calling program gets around to using the information, the system may already
have changed its state."

No, it works fine on plain old Win XP Home; that's
where I did the trace. Perhaps the registry keys
aren't show in regedit because they're dynamic?

I don't quite follow all that (what came back from the Counters query, say?),
but it seems like we only need to support a tiny bit of this interface
to make this installer happy.
According to http://www.microsoft.com/msj/archive/S271.aspx, 230
is the list of running processes. So it looks like the installer
is doing something quite reasonable - maybe looking for another
instance of itself, or something.

Now patch can load rgba cursor and use alpha channel to determine transperant

Correct. The arts library that wine uses is broken so not using the wine arts
driver doesn't cause the arts library to crash. Again, it is the arts library
that is crashing which causes the wine application using that library to also
crash. Fix arts (or don't use it) and the problem goes away.

The 0.9.10 patch modifies wgl.c, which the other patches don't. Still, this
BadMatch error is a Wine problem, but not a regression.

ok, this game seems to have at least 4 problems:
* The crash after playing the intro. I can't reproduce that because I don't
have the intros in the demo. Deleting the movies works around that. Might be
the general funkyness of bink video.
* A NULL pointer access because of bad D3DDevice enumeration. I sent a patch
for this to wine-patches.
* Render target locking. This bites a lot of d3d games, this needs some work
in wined3d. Hacking out the glReadPixels and glDrawPixels calls in
dlls/wined3d/surface.c comes around that, a proper fix is on my todo list.
* Drawing problems: Only the city can be seen most of the time. A pointer to
that might be the following fixme:
fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_SetRenderState
(0x7fd39de8)->(WINED3DRS_TEXTUREMAPBLEND,4) not handled yet
This is written all the time.

Full log with winedbg patch applied
I no longer get crashes when using winedbg, so I can provide the better log
now. I also applied the single buffering patch but it didn't help much.

The SET pixelShaders "0" advice seems to work for me, in that it solves the
immediate-crash-on-startup issue. (However, I still suffer from the minimap
issue and unable-to-select-mobs-using-the-mouse issue.)
The pixelShaders option in Config.wtf corresponds to the "enable all shader
effects" option in the configuration menu. I have found that I can enable that
option and all the suboptions EXCEPT "full-screen glow effect". I haven't
tested this very thoroughly due to my inability to actually play the game, but
it works in the few areas I've run around (Ironforge, Dun Morogh and Auberdine).

The advice above (using 0.9.10) does not work for me. I still get the minimap
crash, and the crash when I enable pixel shaders.
This is using an unpatched wine. Alexander, are you using a patch, and if so
which one?

This problem still exists with wine 0.9.16. I can't imagine that it's that hard
to fix it..
I can't activate the audio tab withouth letting winecfg crash. I have to
manually create the directory /tmp/ksocket-$USER (in my case, /tmp/ksocket-
scytheman) to let it not crash.
Please fix this bug. Just tell me if you need more information about my system,
installed programs, used configure options etc.

This bug, and also the bug where a BadMatch happens when the minimap is on
indoors, does not happen in Wine 0.9.10; so this is a regression. I will do
regression analysis, but if anyone is willing to help, I they are more than
welcome. The first step would be to investigate Wine 0.9.11.

seems to be caused by the NX protection which is enabled by default for ia32
emulation since 2.6.17. Looks like wine still doesn't handle that correectly.
Try adding 'noexec32=off' to your kernel commandline as a workaround.

Fixes a single buffering issue in wined3d
This issue sounds like a problem with single buffering. The attached patch
fixes a simmilar issue in 3DMark2000. Can you try it with Zinio Reader?
