Wine would only return an error each time I ran it with a user that wasn't root.
This is on Fedora Core 4 having installed cPanel-10.8.1-S114 + WHM-10.8.0 using
wine-0.9.13.
----------------------------
$ wine
wine: failed to initialize: /usr/local/lib/wine/ntdll.dll.so: failed to map
segment from shared object: Cannot allocate memory
----------------------------
$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.16-1.2108_FC4 #1 Thu May 4 23:52:01 EDT 2006

----------------------------
I fixed it by going into web host manager (WHM), then disabling "Shell Fork Bomb
Protection". This appears to limit the memory available to wine under a regular
user.
ulimit showed no signs of limiting the memory as far as I could see.

Has anyone ever found a solution to this problem with
the columns being truncated? It appears to be a
problem with fonts selected with the windows
applications from just looking at the screen shot.
Thoughts?

What version of wine are you using? The problem has gone away for me and I think
it is because I upgraded to the newest version (0.9.12, at the time, but it
works for me with 0.9.13 as well)

Many Thanks Ulrich for the post. I thought that the developers has forgotten the
Corel issus completly. Thanks also much for the hint with the ole32.
I played a bit around with the other required dlls for 0.9.13 because printing
is already not possible in Corel 9 in case of Corel directly creates postscript
code which is sent to the printer "as it is" and is not spooled by cups. For
this case PDF-Export is really important. Its seems that there are my buts in
the msvcrt etc. libraries of wine. So the whole winedlloverrides to get Corel
working with copy/paste and pdf export is:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32,msvcrt,msvcrt40,msvcrt20,msvcrt,msvcirt=n"
The dlls can come from a win98se cdrom (with license)

Please read the note directly above the box where you just pasted the console
output. Please attach logs in the future. The reason we ask this is because
the comments entered here get emailed to developers, and it is MUCH easier to
read as a text file than in an email client, not to mention it cuts down on
email size.

I don't know why the behaviour changed as the callback headers item code wasn't
touched till recently. Maybe that's a different bug.
Anyhow I've implemented the callback header items and tested it on PAF5.2 - it
seems to work. Try to run it on the lastest CVS version (or wait for
wine-0.9.14) and report if it works.

Summary: Can't install Outlook 2002 on wine 0.9.13
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.13.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-msi

I bought a QTek 9090 (aka HTC Blue Angel), which is an awesome smartphone.
I wouldn't care about Outlook, but I also happen to work on a company which has
an exchange server, so I bothered to test the Outlook 2002 which came in the CD.
Unfortunately, I couldn't install it because of some MSI errors.
This is the command line output. lines preceded by ### are my comments to
describe what the app was doing:

BTW: Be sure to check your drivers and if you are running in DRI/GLX mode .
You can do so by running glxinfo, if it reports it is using Mesa Indirect GLX
then that can be very likely the cause.

Yeah Jedi Academy is indeed an OpenGL game but it's very odd as the game works
without a problem for me.

Do not seem to fail here on Gentoo with Wine 0.9.13
with version 1.13f of StarCraft or StarCraft: Broodwar
also Demo 1.01 of StarCraft works
I do not know is this issue Wine issue or can it be reproduced at all so you
could check that you system is OK and if it is make regression testing to see
what will cause this crash.
I am sure some Wine version should run StarCraft on battle.net since it's been
working here for years.

4294967295 is -1, so yes, the shader failed to compile. We do print a FIXME if
the shader fails to compile, but usually that happens long before
drawStridedFast is called, so it's not obvious the two are connected. We should
probably detect -1 shaders, print something, and perhaps just skip enabling the
relevant vertex/fragment program.

Because I had moved the msvcrtd.dll file around a bit, I decided to delete and
re-install the game to make sure that everything was working as it was supposed
to. Upon reinstalling it, I ran the game with: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcrtd=n" wine
RubiesLauncher.exe and I got into the login screen and could log in my username
and password. Unfortunately the mouse seems to continuously recenter itself in
the center of the screen (similar to But 1410 (I also have this same problem
with Evil Geinus)
I also ran: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcrtd=b;dinput=n" WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt,+relay wine
Rubies.exe but got that msvcrtd error again. Changing it to:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcrtd=n" WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt,+relay wine Rubies.exe did work,
however, but I'm not sure where the log file is stored.

Please try the attached patch. Although it doesn't make all the tests pass
and makes some existing tests fail it should improve the things. I'm still
working on it.

Vitaliy, thanks for your comments. What do you mean exactly with "copy
everything over to default "c:" drive" ?
Windows is installen on a ntfs partition which I can mount read-only. This is
the reason why I am using a fat32 partition: there I can read and write files
both under Linux and under Windows. I could of course put the application on a
fake windows partition (such as ~/.wine/drive_c) bit then I would not be able
to access it from windows.

The problem occurs in Installshield for Indiana Jones and the emperor's tomb
Demo. The custom installation mode is to change the directory. But press the

I attached the output console.
I remember that this demo worked there was a some time ago. So it is a
regression, but no idea what makes this regression.

Wine 0.9.13 broke Paf5.2 - debug screen dump ++
Well, I'm sad to report that 0.9.13 broke PAF5.2. PAF5.2 worked as before
under 0.9.12 - Individual tab still crashed everything but the expected (but
empty) window showed for several seconds.
At the end of the attachment is verification of version and some wierd stuff
that happened when I ran winecfg - should I file a bug on that?
I hate to keep bugging you guys you've been doing splendid work.

diff -u10 fonts_garbage_unified.txt fonts_OK_under_load_unified.txt
I've made some tracing (+tid,+font,+loaddll,+process,+module) for both BAD and
GOOD conditions (using some installer app, named "setup.exe").
Then unified (replaced by some wildcards) handles in both log files and diffed
them. Attaching the result.
Seems in a GOOD case "winex11.drv" is loaded earlier second time (still by
setup.exe)--just before launched explorer.exe starts loading "user32.dll". In
a BAD case this happens later--when explorer.exe has "gdi.exe" loaded.
If full traces are needed, just ask for.

If my box is under some load (spitting out lots of traces and being low on

I guess some race condition was introduced by this patch.

what I wrote was some prefix for the command line you mention in the first
message ("wine RubiesLauncher.exe") so the whole command would be:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcrtd=b;dinput=n" WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt,+relay wine Rubies.exe
Sorry for not noticing you're novice here :) and thanks for a bug reporting.
Louis:
well, the game log says exception occures in ntdll:
| [***Unknown exception type***]
| in module ntdll.dll at 0073:7ffa711c.

... so IMHO ntdll relays (before err:msvcrt:MSVCRTD_operator_new_dbg) are still
interesting to look at. Thanks.

Yes, Star Trek: Bridge Commander is affected by this bug. The "fake" pointer it
creates hardly moves at all without a patch similar to the proposed one.
Several people in the BC clan I play with sometimes (|SoK|) use a similar patch
that I put together for them a month back or so, apparently to no ill effect on
other games. Basically every time BC polls the cursor, then warps it back to
the center and moves its fake cursor on the screen (it acquires in relative
mode, and fakes absolute mode for the menus only). This makes wine's code
(which only triggers every 10ms) think that it hasn't moved (since it's been
warped back a dozen times since the last 10ms interval), and wine never reports
any movement except for in the tiny gap between the last warp before the 10ms
interval, and the interval itself.

"WINEDLLOVERRIDS="msvcrtd=b;dinput=n" WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt,+relay Rubies.exe". In
the first case nothing seemed to happen and in the second case I got an error
saying something about Rubies.exe command not found. (I figured you didn't mean
the second, but just wanted to make sure. I had tried both commands before
copying any errors down so the 'Wine errors' attachment came after running both
commands. It is far from having output in the thousands, though, so I figured
that I'm still not doing it the right way.

$ grep -i block.*2 include/msvcrt/crtdbg.h
| #define _CRT_BLOCK 2
And this is written by [1]:
| An allocation must never allocate, reallocate, or free any block of CRT type.
I guess this is a typo and MSDN guys meant "An application" here. So it would
be nice to see, what is calling this operator.
Can anyone, please, try running app with
WINEDLLOVERRIDS="msvcrtd=b;dinput=n" WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt,+relay
set and attaching tail of the log to this bug report? (lets say ~1000 lines
before the crash)
If this is called from the app, we'll need to make some tests on Windows and to
implement missing functionality to conform new tests, IMO.

Please visit

there are some comments on the work... as well as some screenshots of a working
system.
HL highly depends on OLE Components. I could resolve some of the problems by
using native libs (eek I know but what can I do if the functionality IŽm looking
for throws a FIXME and then an error?).
I had to replace IMM32, OLEAUT32, OLE32 (not sure here), WSOCK32, WS2_32,
WS2HELP, RPCRT4 (this fixed the 430 error) mentioned here, the call is simply
not implemented and according to user "vitamin" (IRC) OLE will probably never be
supportet. Right now I am stuck with an "Out of Memory" error right after
loading mswinsck.ocx "vitamin" mentioned it looks like a non-registered
component. I ran regsvr32.exe with the ocx but no luck. Thats the status... any
comments?

My quick try at using the right heap functions
I take it back. At first I forgot to zero the memory; that caused
Visual Basic to barf on the very first allocation.
Zeroing the memory brought me back to the original
problem, i.e. vb barfing as soon as we try to resize a safearray.
I'm attaching my current try. I'm pretty sleepy, so this might be wrong,
but it does get rid of one FIXME comment in a principled way.

According to
http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2004/07/05/173226.aspx
there are convenience functions CoTaskMem{Alloc,Realloc,Free}
which can be used instead of calling CoGetMalloc and using that interface.
And indeed those get used quite a bit in Wine's ole and oleaut32 code.
So I tried the obvious patch, but now things fall over much earlier.
I'll attach it as food for thought.

Reproduced, and yes, works fine with native oleaut32.
Comparing the logs with WINEDEBUG=+all,
I see that the native oleaut32 is using IMalloc_ReAlloc, but
ours doesn't. And, surprise suprise, in our dlls/oleaut/safearray.c, one finds
the comment
/* FIXME: Memory should be allocated and freed using a per-thread IMalloc
* instance returned from CoGetMalloc().
*/
I bet this error would go away once that FIXME is handled.
(There are other files that have the same FIXME, e.g. typelib.c, that might also
need to be fixed,
I dunno.)

I guess we'd need to add server/menu.[ch] analogous to server/window.[ch]
and add new server messages (get/set)(_menu_info/menuitem_info).
Likewise, in dlls/user/menu.c, we'd need to use those messages
to handle out-of-process menus, just like dlls/user/win.c does
for out-of-process windows. Not many lines of code, but probably
a month to get just right (except for Alexandre, but he's busy).

Summary: Run-Time error '6' overflow in terragen
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.5.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P2
Component: wine-ole
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: robert(a)chezmarshall.freeserve.co.uk
I've just installed mandriva 2006, I was using mandriva LE and
wine-0.9.5-mdk under which terragen (http://www.planetside.co.uk/) ran
pretty well and I registered the program which enables me to use
various large terrain sizes.
However with the mandriva 2006 install and wine-0.9.5-mdk whenever I try to
load a terrain file (saved from terragen) with the large terrain size
or change the setting to use one of the larger terrain sizes it
crashes on me
With the popup message
Run-Time error '6' overflow
I can't see anything in the output of running the prog to add extra
useful info at the moment though I could add the output to this bug if required
Unfortunately I can't try newer versions of wine as they all cause
terragen to crash on startup with this bug (I've tried 0.9.12)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4370
The version of terragen is the same in the two installs (it's in
~/.wine)
There's a demo version of the program that does allow some resizing
and the bug can be replicated there too
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/download.php?item=winfull
So this bug occurs with Mandriva 2006 but not with Mandriva LE (2005)

I am unable to do a regression as wine refuses to compile when I compile wine
manually, it errors about neither finding freetype or fontforge while fontforge
is installed. Wine emerges fine from portage, using the changes portage makes
and emering int results in the same error weird enough.
I am running Gentoo AMD64 in case you need that information.

Summary: winecfg and wine miss fonts when registry is created
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.12.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-gui
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: llobocki(a)is.pw.edu.pl
On a Fedora 3 box, having initially ~/.wine directory empty:
1) I run winecfg, it runs OK (just complaints about missing system, system32
directories)
2) When registry files are present in the ~/.wine directory,
it stops displaying text any longer (just like fonts were missing or invisible)
(neither wine nor winecfg)
When I delete everything from ~/.wine, winecfg begins displaying fonts
again. (and stops displaying next time it is run, as registry files\
are created)
This behaviour is 100% reproducible.
I tried to fix it using msttcorefonts, did not help.
On another Fedora 3 box, I got some weird characters
in winecfg at start.

FWIW, here's an article that describes how menu handles were, um, handled under
NT 3.1:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dngenlib/html/msdn_handles1.asp
It looks like they have two 16 bit parts,; the upper 16 bits are a 'uniqueness key',
and the lower 16 bits are an index into a table in the win32 server.
There was a 64K systemwide limit on the number of USER handles.
No idea what NT 4.0 and later do, but the NT 3.1 approach might do for us.

Don't run any programs from fat32 partitions - Wine has some strange problems
witht that. Instead copy everything over to default "c:" drive.
Don't use *nix path when you run programs with Wine. Most programs can't handle
that - either CD into the program's dir and run it a "wine prog.exe" and/or use
full windows path "wine 'c:\Program Files\Application\prog.exe' ".
Enable bitmap trace (WINEDEBUG=+bitmap wine ....) and look where are those bogus
bitmap sizes comming from. If that's what program doing - it won't work.

- Debian GNU / Linux testing
- custom kernel 2.6.11
- KDE 3.5.2
- xserver-xorg 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 (same problem with 6.9 which I am not using

- Windows XP, not accessible from Linux (Predesktop Area)
- the application is StrePla4 (standard version, downloadable from
http://www.strepla.de/StrePla4/english/download/index.htm
fully functional for 30 days without licence)
- command line is: wine /fat32/segelflug/StrePla4/StrePla.exe
- the steps required to reproduce the bug are:
1) install wine on a dual boot (testing Debian GNU / Linux, Windows XP)
system with the componets described above.
2) install StrePla under Windows XP on a FAT32 partition
3) invoke wine on StrePla.exe

I understand that I'm on my own when optimization flags are involved. I tried
to solve it myself, but had no success, so I posted here the results I could
achieve in hope anyone can help. I considered it a regression because Wine _
always_ worked with -Os before the mentioned patch. If nobody can help I'd be
fine with -O2 ;)

you have to put a native dinput.dll (so from a windows installation, or if you
have a window license , from www.dlldump.com) in
~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32. Same holds for msvcrtd.dll (Note, so _not_
msvcrt!). That way i could work around the bug

IMO, if you want to compile with CFLAGS other than what ./configure produces,
then you should be willing to debug problems and submit patches to fix them
yourself.
While this might be a good thing to fix, I don't believe it should be in
bugzilla, or if it is, it should be marked as an enhancement rather than a bug.
If we consider this a bug, then should we also consider CFLAGS="-Werror"
./configure broken too? That doesn't produce a properly function binary either.
Should we maintain a Gentoo style list of "safe" CFLAGS? If they were really
safe and did something useful, then they should be added to configure.ac.
The simple solution is that if you use CFLAGS="-foo" when configuring, you
should be considered on your own, and solve the problems you come across
yourself. If you want out support, then use plain ./configure.

Sorry Dan but there are some ugly things of m$ making that prevent that.
Like all the horid interdependacies that we can't do nothing about. I'm sure
that could be part of the problem here (some forwards that being optimized out
while they shouldn't).

Wine should be able to compile with at least some optimization.
http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.1.0/gcc/Optimize-Options.html#Optimize-…
lists what each optimization flag does.
-Os doesn't look terribly dangerous except that it turns on
-fstrict-aliasing, which many apps aren't ready for.
What happens if you try -Os -fno-strict-aliasing ?

Because the MSI package wouldn't install, I tried the non-msi installer,
http://downloads.activestate.com/ActivePerl/Windows/5.8/ActivePerl-5.8.8.81…
This unpacks to a directory with a batch file you're supposed to run.
The batch file does things like copy with lots of options
(which probably won't work), but I tried it anyway with
wcmd /c Installer.bat
but it fails early because it has trouble running a subshell.
Seems like wcmd.exe needs a bit of work before it can handle this.

However, running cscript.exe with no arguments didn't print out

And ActivePerl still things WSH isn't installed; running with +msi

Something seems awry here...
