I guess we'd need to add server/menu.[ch] analogous to server/window.[ch]
and add new server messages (get/set)(_menu_info/menuitem_info).
Likewise, in dlls/user/menu.c, we'd need to use those messages
to handle out-of-process menus, just like dlls/user/win.c does
for out-of-process windows. Not many lines of code, but probably
a month to get just right (except for Alexandre, but he's busy).

Summary: Run-Time error '6' overflow in terragen
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.5.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P2
Component: wine-ole
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: robert(a)chezmarshall.freeserve.co.uk
I've just installed mandriva 2006, I was using mandriva LE and
wine-0.9.5-mdk under which terragen (http://www.planetside.co.uk/) ran
pretty well and I registered the program which enables me to use
various large terrain sizes.
However with the mandriva 2006 install and wine-0.9.5-mdk whenever I try to
load a terrain file (saved from terragen) with the large terrain size
or change the setting to use one of the larger terrain sizes it
crashes on me
With the popup message
Run-Time error '6' overflow
I can't see anything in the output of running the prog to add extra
useful info at the moment though I could add the output to this bug if required
Unfortunately I can't try newer versions of wine as they all cause
terragen to crash on startup with this bug (I've tried 0.9.12)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4370
The version of terragen is the same in the two installs (it's in
~/.wine)
There's a demo version of the program that does allow some resizing
and the bug can be replicated there too
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/download.php?item=winfull
So this bug occurs with Mandriva 2006 but not with Mandriva LE (2005)

I am unable to do a regression as wine refuses to compile when I compile wine
manually, it errors about neither finding freetype or fontforge while fontforge
is installed. Wine emerges fine from portage, using the changes portage makes
and emering int results in the same error weird enough.
I am running Gentoo AMD64 in case you need that information.

Summary: winecfg and wine miss fonts when registry is created
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.12.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-gui
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: llobocki(a)is.pw.edu.pl
On a Fedora 3 box, having initially ~/.wine directory empty:
1) I run winecfg, it runs OK (just complaints about missing system, system32
directories)
2) When registry files are present in the ~/.wine directory,
it stops displaying text any longer (just like fonts were missing or invisible)
(neither wine nor winecfg)
When I delete everything from ~/.wine, winecfg begins displaying fonts
again. (and stops displaying next time it is run, as registry files\
are created)
This behaviour is 100% reproducible.
I tried to fix it using msttcorefonts, did not help.
On another Fedora 3 box, I got some weird characters
in winecfg at start.

Though firefox was using 99% of

FWIW, here's an article that describes how menu handles were, um, handled under
NT 3.1:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dngenlib/html/msdn_handles1.asp
It looks like they have two 16 bit parts,; the upper 16 bits are a 'uniqueness key',
and the lower 16 bits are an index into a table in the win32 server.
There was a 64K systemwide limit on the number of USER handles.
No idea what NT 4.0 and later do, but the NT 3.1 approach might do for us.

Don't run any programs from fat32 partitions - Wine has some strange problems
witht that. Instead copy everything over to default "c:" drive.
Don't use *nix path when you run programs with Wine. Most programs can't handle
that - either CD into the program's dir and run it a "wine prog.exe" and/or use
full windows path "wine 'c:\Program Files\Application\prog.exe' ".
Enable bitmap trace (WINEDEBUG=+bitmap wine ....) and look where are those bogus
bitmap sizes comming from. If that's what program doing - it won't work.

I understand that I'm on my own when optimization flags are involved. I tried
to solve it myself, but had no success, so I posted here the results I could
achieve in hope anyone can help. I considered it a regression because Wine _
always_ worked with -Os before the mentioned patch. If nobody can help I'd be
fine with -O2 ;)

you have to put a native dinput.dll (so from a windows installation, or if you
have a window license , from www.dlldump.com) in
~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32. Same holds for msvcrtd.dll (Note, so _not_
msvcrt!). That way i could work around the bug

IMO, if you want to compile with CFLAGS other than what ./configure produces,
then you should be willing to debug problems and submit patches to fix them
yourself.
While this might be a good thing to fix, I don't believe it should be in
bugzilla, or if it is, it should be marked as an enhancement rather than a bug.
If we consider this a bug, then should we also consider CFLAGS="-Werror"
./configure broken too? That doesn't produce a properly function binary either.
Should we maintain a Gentoo style list of "safe" CFLAGS? If they were really
safe and did something useful, then they should be added to configure.ac.
The simple solution is that if you use CFLAGS="-foo" when configuring, you
should be considered on your own, and solve the problems you come across
yourself. If you want out support, then use plain ./configure.

Sorry Dan but there are some ugly things of m$ making that prevent that.
Like all the horid interdependacies that we can't do nothing about. I'm sure
that could be part of the problem here (some forwards that being optimized out
while they shouldn't).

Wine should be able to compile with at least some optimization.
http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.1.0/gcc/Optimize-Options.html#Optimize-…
lists what each optimization flag does.
-Os doesn't look terribly dangerous except that it turns on
-fstrict-aliasing, which many apps aren't ready for.
What happens if you try -Os -fno-strict-aliasing ?

Because the MSI package wouldn't install, I tried the non-msi installer,
http://downloads.activestate.com/ActivePerl/Windows/5.8/ActivePerl-5.8.8.81…
This unpacks to a directory with a batch file you're supposed to run.
The batch file does things like copy with lots of options
(which probably won't work), but I tried it anyway with
wcmd /c Installer.bat
but it fails early because it has trouble running a subshell.
Seems like wcmd.exe needs a bit of work before it can handle this.

However, running cscript.exe with no arguments didn't print out

And ActivePerl still things WSH isn't installed; running with +msi

right before it aborts.
Something seems awry here...

The problem here is that overlay surfaces and related pixel formats aren't
supported. The failing assertion is just a symptom of the real problem. That
vlc starts with my code is just because such an assertion isn't there, but not
because the bug is fixed. The next problem, the blue video, is because the
whole video is missing and just some blue background is shown.

Lotus Notes 7 beta3 works for me with Wine 0.9.12, I had to use native
usp10 and set the Windows version to 98, otherwise it wouldn't start. No
other dll overrides were required.
I haven't tested the release version of Notes 7.

I thought so. Refcount bug most often visable only on exit or mod changes.
In your case it seems something crashes/locksup. Could you run it with +tid and
check if it is multithreaded?
Also enable some more traces (around x11drv) to see what it's waiting on?

You can't avoid this even with native...
But Wine has WINEPREFIX that you can use to isolate separate applications.
Please enable "synchronous" trace channel with some others to see what fails for
you. Check things like bitmap sizes that could be too big/invalid.

As an update on eMule in 0.9.13:
The program now crashes on the following function:
wine: Call from 0x7fca15c0 to unimplemented function dnsapi.dll.DnsQuery_W, aborting
So, good work and thank you on dnsapi.dll.DnsQueryConfig (and what else has been
implemented), now you just need to implement DnsQuery_W ;p.

On your wiki page you said you installed Wine and winetools. Please remove
winetools and forget about them.
Make sure that Wine's fonts are correct (run notepad, and check "SYSTEM" and "MS
Sans Serif" fonts). If they are invisible - then you have bad fonts and need to
recompile Wine from source.
Upgrade to Wine 0.9.13. Then remove ~/.wine directory and try installing program
again.

GetMenuItemCount() fails to return the proper menu count when you pass a HMENU
for a menu that's associated with a window in a different process. Attached is
a minimal test case where behavior when querying a menu in-process and out-of-
process can be compared.
Run as:
menu_iteration_test.exe <-- out of process
menu_iteration_test.exe inprocess <-- in process
On Windows, both result in printing the menu items. In Wine, the first one
gives a menu item count of -1.

Same application on bug 4897 but different bug. readme.txt has overview and run
instructions.
With git of 2006-04-21 things were ok with this app. I have upgraded xorg at
6.9.9-5.6.2006mdkdrivers for my unicrome built in video and it seems to still
have bugs. After the wine-0.9.13 updates it now crashes without a console error
and leaves winedvm and wineserver running after control C at console.
Prior to tag 0.9.13 I did get an exception of out of resources trying to make a
window but I can not duplicate it. tried a regression test and can nolonger get
the kpn1.exe to run. Other Delphi 1 apps still run.
I am looking into getting a video card to see if it is xorg related. I can make
X crash with KDE or icewm when I run some apps with wine or do panning in native
qcad or eagle cad.
If I can get a works for me I will upgrade my video card.

When clicking on one of the skins in the Skin Chooser window in Windows Media
Player 7.1, it hangs and the message
wineserver crashed, please report this.
The other console output is written when doing other stuff in the Player as
well, so it does not seem to be relevant.

Hi,
With this software, you can display ecw raster files (images)
(very high & well compressed).
http://www.ermapper.com/downloads/plugins.aspx
Download and install 'ER Viewer 7.0'
There is a problem with "File/Open File" :
I can't select tree/directories with the mouse
(only with keyboard) !
Thank you,
Guy
Note: There is also a free compressor limited
in size (works fine with wine).

Dmitry, you are right, I checked it in Windows. Currently the message test
(dlls/user/tests/msg.c) does not contain such ShowWindow tests: with WS_CHILD
style, min/maximization/restoration, with invisible parent, hence I earlier
missed that. With other SW_ parameters, like SW_SHOW, calling SetWindowPos is
blocked.
In a sense, it simplifies matter: (in ShowWindow) with invisible parent, the
SetWindowPos (sending the messages) should be called when the state of the
window (min/maximized/restored) has changed, regardless of whether it is
WS_CHILD or WS_EX_MDICHILD, or something else.
Perhaps you can submit a patch to add your tests to msg.c?

configuration works, 3rd party tools may break, and that is a fact of life. We
don't encourage people to use 3rd party tools such as ies4linux and winetools
exactly because they break alot.

None of the Internet Explorers will work anymore on the latest version of Wine.
I have tried the ies4linux package that gives me IE5, IE5.5 and IE6 (from
http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/) but they all die with the same error
message. I have also tried the Internet Explorer in Wine itself (by running
"wine iexplore") but it dies as well.
The IE in wine did seem to work in the beginning. A popup came up telling me I
needed the Mozilla ActiveX component. It installed, but after that IE dies. I
quickly see a frame of the main window pop up but it goes away instantly.
I'll attach the output of Wine in two attachments.

Bernd, by comparing my pseudo-code and your log you can see that I ignored
C-string escape-mechanism in my mind. If you want to tell a backslash in C, you
should put a double-backslash:
| 0009:trace:file:CreateFileW L"\\\\.\\D:" GENERIC_READ FILE_SHARE_READ
| FILE_SHARE_WRITE creation 3 attributes 0x0
So you need to correct this in your code, I am afraid. Thanks for testing
WinAPI, you're quicker than me.
Cheers:)
(though Vitaliy may not agree with the usefullness of testing this part)

Regression testing shows the commit that broke the installer was:
ntdll: Fix size check for NtQueryInformationToken(TokenGroups).
So it _is_ a duplicate. IMHO it would have been handier to revert this patch
before the wine-0.9.13 release. I guess we get a lot of these bug reports with
failing installers with wine-0.9.13 now....

Problem:
There is at least one instance in Quicken 2005 where there is a window that pops
up and resizes constantly from it's normal size to about 100px square, see the
url for an image of the small window. You can also see how big it should be at
http://murray.no-ip.org/big_split_window.png (the contents of the window is
mostly the desktop background, I think because it is resized before it finishes
drawing the contents.
Steps to Re-Create:
Open Quicken 2005. Select an account (create if needed), select a check
(create..), push the split button in the bottom right of the check entry.

If it works on Windows but not Wine, then it's a bug - regardless of whether

The claim above is not true, my tests show that Windows sends
WM_WINDOWPOSCHANGING/
WM_WINDOWPOSCHANGED and friends to child windows with invisible parent at least
for SW_MINIMIZE, SW_MAXIMIZE, SW_SHOWMINIMIZED, SW_SHOWMAXIMIZED and
SW_SHOWMINNOACTIVE.

The simple solution is to not compile with -Ox .. I'm surprised that this ever
worked at all. Wine code really isn't designed to work with that kind of
optimization.

Summary: Wine compiled with -Os optimization crashes

Status: UNCONFIRMED

Wine compiled with -Os optimization flag crashes when loading some native dlls.
Using git bisect I've tracked it down to this recent commit:
Alexandre Julliard: ntdll: Add wrappers for the string functions.
http://source.winehq.org/git/?p=wine.git;a=commitdiff;h=473fbcb781a2d42dd93d
05680dfdef88999349fa
+loaddll,+module,+imports log and backtrace attached.
You can see from the backtrace that the top of the stack is corrupted. I tried
to single-step to the crash, and it happens on a TRACE_() in fixup_imports().
When I step by single instructions, I see that it enters wine_dbg_log@PLT and
next segfaults - I think that the relocation table or whatever this @PLT thing
uses gets overwritten with ASCII data at some previous stage.
When I comment out these TRACE_()s or compile without -Os, everything works
fine.
