Re-confirming bug from clean install (+ Transgaming ActiveX) of Wine 0.9.9.
To summarize - GTA fails to install in Managed mode, since it blocks waiting for
user input on two invisible message boxes - they are not displayed or shown in
the window list. In non-managed mode the boxes appear.
Previously the text was invisible for the "mystery boxes". As of right now I can
see the text just fine [ in non-managed mode ]. First box asks if I want to
register, and second box asks if an icon should be created on the desktop.

minimize/maximize buttons on the title bar.
The system is Ubuntu 5.10, Wine version is 0.9.9, window manager is GNOME.
I found, that only applications written in Delphi doesn't have these buttons,
and doesn't appear on the task bar.
If there is a button on such application, who do Application.Minimize, then the
application do minimize itself, but can't maximize.
I can attach a sample application.

This does not seem to happen with other window managers with a simpler
notion of a virtual desktop. Thus, I suspect that the part that wine
can't handle is changing the page within a virtual desktop. Any
observations?

The problem seems to occur with all newer versions of wine, but I
guess, it has not always been there. I occasionally still use Borland
Kylix (which came bundled with a private version of wine) and this
program creates a whole zoo of windows without losing any of them when
switching desktops ...
Has anybody at least discovered any workaround (except making all wine
windows sticky, which works, but basically kills the virtual desktops)?

AFAIK, all discussed ways to restore windowed OpenGL functionality are more or
less evil hacks. So, maybe Wine should partially restore the old (broken) WM
code for OpenGL viewports? This would be the most streight and performant way,
and if Wine only creates additional X windows for OpenGL viewports, the bugs
fixed by the WM rewrite shouldn't reappear, anyway...?

Thank you for usefull hints. Unfortunatelly this is not the problem.
The way openGL works on X is it uses X window's context. That wasn't a problem
more then a year ago - when we had X window for each child window. Basicaly each
Wine's window was X window. That was causing lots of problems which were fixed
rewriting Wine's window management.
Main key point of that rewrite was "Creation of X windows for top level windows
only". So in other words, only outer most Wine window has a coresponding X window.
That's why when an app wants to draw something on Wine it does that for the
whole window. And ATM there are no "propper" ways to make it draw in a child
window only.

I'm sure Windows uses a separate window for the opengl context. I've seen it in
action before. I do some graphics programming in Windows and the normal method
to handle window messages in the graphics loop is (psuedo code):
while no quit message received
.. while more windows messages
.... process next windows message
.. process one frame of graphics
When I inadvertently messed up my code to:
.. Process one window message (if any)
.. process one frame of graphics
I noticed that the gl window lagged behind everything. It was apparent when
moving and resizing that the opengl window was a separate window by itself.
This was the result of messages queueing up (my frame took a fair amount of
time) and thus responses were not instant. It appeared as the opengl window
trailing behind the client area as if it was "floating" and not tracking the
move/resize as fast as it should.

It looks like the crash directly related to pixel and vertex shaders.
Apparently with pixel shaders off (via winecfg) Source engine selects different
rendering aproach wich does not deppend on dxlevel.
So:
Pixel shaders | dxlevel
|70 80 81 90
OFF | W W W W
ON | W C C C
W - works; C - crash
Note: tested with wine-0.9 through 2006-03-05 cvs
I have not experemented with enabling/disabling vertex shaders.
Also I did this tests with HL2 and not CS:S but I would assume results should be
the same.

Vitaliy, I'm really sorry if I offended you :-(. I was just so excited to
finally be able to use OziExplorer without having to reboot to WINDOWS. I'm
afraid I am not quite such a purist as you .... I guess my philosophy leans more
towards bringing more people over into the LINUX / WINE camp, while at the same
time improving WINE so as eventually to not need pieces of WINDOWS (although it
appears that Tony has found a solution not involving DLL's).
And many thanks, Tony, in showing us how to carry this on to the next step.
I'll try creating a 'HHCtrl.OCX' in my next test (with a pure WINE installation
:-) ).
Incidentally I wrote to Des Newman, the author of OziExplorer, asking if there
was some way he could make it more compatible with WINE, but have had no response.

try

if that fixes the bug we can be sure the problem is indeed in riched20.

Mike, that's what I've been trying to say.
1. I didn't know about the builtin msi component
2. Obviously now that I know there is one, I'll use that instead (unless there
is some reason not to.)
3. Having tried it, it seems to work somewhat better than the win98 msi
4. Leave the bug invalid.

Fixed with 0.9.8 Now no dll overrides are nessecary for launching solidworks 2005.
But it still crashes just after displaying correctly main screen...
As there are some ole errors, i suspect problems during msi installation.
So first one have to analyze msi install and find out if there are problems here
with ddl registration...

Hi, i agree that this app is great to test wine's 3D funcionality with. I seem
to have different issues than you: right here the program crashes immediately
when started. That's because glGetString(GL_RENDERER) somehow returns null,and
that makes the app crash (line 229 in directx.c: gl_string = (const char *)
glGetString(GL_RENDERER);)
However in virtual desktop mode it starts fine. None of the examples work
however, they all give Failed to create DirectX9.0 device/Unsupported Rendering
device.
Moreover all opengl examples crash as well (with Bad Match
X_GLXCreateGLXPixmap), guess that's because opengl2.0 is not supported yet?
I have an Ati radeon 9600 XT

I don't have stable internet access, so I'd rather not subscribe to
many lists. Besides I am unfamiliar with the whole process, haven't even used
'diff'.
Anyway I added the following test to my local dlls/user/tests/edit.c
static void test_em_sethandle(void)
{
HWND hEdit;
HLOCAL hLocal, hOld;
char *buffer;
trace("EDIT: EM_SETHANDLE\n");
hEdit = create_editcontrol(WS_BORDER | ES_MULTILINE, 0);
hLocal = (HLOCAL)LocalAlloc(LMEM_MOVEABLE, 100);
buffer = LocalLock(hLocal);
strcpy(buffer, "Hello!");
LocalUnlock(hLocal);
hOld = (HLOCAL)SendMessage(hEdit, EM_GETHANDLE, 0, 0);
LocalFree(hOld);
SendMessage(hEdit, EM_SETHANDLE, (WPARAM)hLocal, 0);
DestroyWindow(hEdit);
}
I've also temporarily fixed the crash problem by adding a test
mentioned in the orginal post.
/* countA = strlen(textA) + 1;
*/
if(textA){
countA = strlen(textA) + 1;
}
But the real problem is still there: when handling the EM_SETHANDLE message
the current code frees the old memory. It shoudn't. According to MSDN
users of this control should free the old memory manually.
Hope that current maintainer of this file will take a look into it and come
up with a patch.

This must be because urlmon/regsvr.c now tries to get the address of RegInstallA
which is not present in older native advpack dlls. The same problem exists in
mshtml. So the fix is to get the address of 'RegInstall' which is the same as
'RegInstallA'. See the attached patch.

I'm not sure it would be that trivial to implement. There's obviously the issue
about all the different versions, there seems to come out a new version with
every release of the dxsdk. The other issue is that except a number of rather
trivial matrix manipulation and texture loading functions, it also contains the
HLSL shader compiler. Although that's not neccesarily hard to implement, it's
not trivial either, and would probably require quite a bit of time.

However, it used to get stuck in a loop occasionally and print "nested exception
on signal stack" even without d3dx9_25.dll.

The real problem is that now Wine uses "system" and "MS Sans Serif" for most of
the text. This is changed from "Arial".
Most (all) systems do not have those fonts for obvious reasons. That's why Wine
(for a long time now) comes with those two fonts.
Now it seems that again most (all) systems do not recognize *fon files as being
a font. Or Wine does not recognize those fonts as being available system wide. I
will let you test this and report back which is it.
Anything else?

But, why should we add the fonts to ./wine/drive_c/windows/fonts while in the
previous versions of wine they runned perfectly? It does not detects the correct
location of the fonts?

I added the new fonts to ./wine/drive_c/windows/fonts and found them to be
blank. Opening the *.ttf in fontforge or kfontview show no data but the *.fnt
look ok.
There were many errors on make like Missing glyph for char 0622
I installed fontforge-20060209-1.i386.rpm

After installing fontforge I now have new fonts in the wine/fonts.
I did not see any indication in the output of ./configure that it was missing
fontforge.
I saw a new thread in users with the same problem with fonts after upgrading to 9.9

I believe this particular bug has been fixed with the recent move to WineD3D
(and my testing as of CVS 3/5/06). Granted, there are plenty of other bugs
affecting Civ4, but this one seems to be gone.
The attached patch may be fine, but they'd probably need a smaller test case
than Civ4 or NFSU to make sure those values return correctly for the format.

requirement.
I just saw a bug was fixed in fontconfig related to wine's usage. I just loaded
and compiled the cvs for fontconfig. I am not sure if I can test without
building it into an rpm.
To find what wine required I just ran ./configure and looked for no's and add
then found the RPM to add that.

Vitaliy:
This bug is not invalid. submitter is just tring to get it going using whatever
method he can (WineTools is just one of them.)
with current CVS (clean .wine) the program seems to install fine (nothing but
some richedit errors in the terminial) However when you try to run the program
after cliking on OK on the initial splash screen a message box pops up with the
following
Exception EAccessViolation in module OziExp.exe at 00000000.
Access violation at address 00000000 in module 'OziExp.exe'. Read of address
00000000.
After cliking on OK a second message box pops up with "unable to write to \."
Clicking on that message box brings up a third an final message box with the
text "Runtime error 216 at 00048519"
The only messages in the terminal are these.

Like Marcus Meissner said in comment 1 it looks like some wierd copy protection...
The interesting thing is that WineTools is able to get it to run somehow.
With WINEDEBUG="dll" I get
trace:dll:fill_init_list (krnl386.exe) - START
trace:dll:fill_init_list (krnl386.exe) - END
trace:dll:NE_CallDllEntryPoint Calling krnl386.exe DllEntryPoint, cs:ip=1017:1e43

trace:dll:fill_init_list (gdi.exe) - END
trace:dll:fill_init_list (user.exe) - START
trace:dll:fill_init_list (user.exe) - END
Nothing special...
Finally I ran with WINEDEBUG="file" and I noticed this.
trace:file:RtlGetFullPathName_U (L"c:\\windows\\system32\\HHCtrl.OCX" 520
0x7fc8f1a8 (nil))
So I created an empty HHCtrl.OCX in system32 and the program now starts for me
and starts fine.

Summary: Message handling in dlls/user/edit.c may crash programs
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-user
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: qingdao33122(a)yahoo.com
How to reproduce:
1. write a win32 program that use a multiline edit control.
2. try to change the buffer that holds text by following the
procedure outlined in
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/shellcc/pl…
Your program crashes.
You can also create a VC6 Appwizard program, making sure your View
class inherit from CEditView, run the program, then try to load a
text file into the edit pane. (winetools users aren't exposed to this
problem because MFC handles this differently when in win9x)
Digging a little further into source and now I am fairly certain where
the problem lies.
When you send a EM_SETHANDLE message to an edit control, you normally
should first free the orginal memory buffer it holds. When EM_SETHANDLE
is being processed by EditWndProc_common the HLOCAL for the original buffer
may well be invalid. EditWndProc_common seems to call EDIT_LockBuffer before
it does anything. In EDIT_LockBuffer I see code like this:
textA = LocalLock(es->hloc32A);
countA = strlen(textA) + 1;
The code above didn't check if textA is non-NULL before doing the strlen,
that apparently crashes some programs, even beyond the EM_SETHANDLE case.

lex.yy.c:2610: error: parse error before numeric constant
lex.yy.c: In function `yy_scan_string':
lex.yy.c:2611: error: number of arguments doesn't match prototype
this is because flex-2.5.33 introduces a new internal function:
YY_BUFFER_STATE yy_scan_string (yyconst char * yystr)
which conflicts with wine's parser.l:
/* Exclusive string handling */
%x yystr
i reported this against flex and their answer was that this is a bug in flex:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1439346&group_id=9…
so, wine's parser.l needs to rename or prefix all of its yy* variables

Ozi with GPS input working with my Garmin GPSmap76, a previous WINE installation
using WINETOOLS, and WINE 0.9.8.
See previous comments 3) and 4).
I did the following
as root "chmod 666 /dev/ttyS0"
in .wine/dosdevices "ln -s /dev/ttyS0 com1"
in OziExplorer...file...configuration...com select driver 2 (driver 1
also works)
set Garmin GPSmap76 output to "NEMA 4800"
Have not tried this in a moving boat/car, but the position pointer comes up at
the proper position for my (stationary) house :-).
I think the heading for this topic should be changed from "ozi explorer does not
work at all" to something like "OziExplorer can be made to work". It seems to
be working now (with some caveats).

I get frequent "Your connection has been interrupted messages" too. I'm not sure
if they correlate with CPU usage. I've tried to minimize CPU usage by stopping
services and not running a window manager, but it hasn't helped. Sometimes I get

It only happens with TCP/IP games. Battle Net and Single Player games work
perfectly.

Summary: Audio Driver not written to registry

URL: http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=1567
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-multimedia
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: wine.tester(a)gmail.com
After installing Wine and using winecfg, clicking on the Audio tab I get an
error saying "There is no audio driver specified in the registry". When I
deselect the default OSS Driver and select it again and apply the changes I
never get the attached error when using winecfg and clicking on the audio tab.
In PartyPoker I was experiencing the cards dealing sound looping over and over
after various amounts of time. Since I rechecked the OSS Driver I haven't
experienced this problem with the sound since. Is this driver not getting
written to the registry a Wine installer problem?

question was raised "Does the x86_64 kernel have such an interface? Is
SYS_rt_sigaction the alternative?" ... and I honestly don't know enough about
the kernel to say yes or know? Can anyone else respond to this?

You system like most others _do not_ have "System" or "MS Sans Serif" fonts.
Wine has those fonts but for some reason they are not visible system wide.
That's why I asked you to copy fonts that came with Wine (lots of *fon and
marlet.ttf) to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts.
Have you tried that?

Hi.
I have just installed wine 0.9.9 (with rpm) on a clean mandriva cooker system
(wine and cedega have been erased before) and winecfg was unable to add drives.
winecfg returned the following messages:
Warning: the specified Windows directory L"c:\\windows" is not accessible.
Warning: the specified System directory L"c:\\windows\\system32" is not accessible.
Warning: could not find DOS drive for current working directory
'/home/hsyl20/.wine', starting in the Windows directory.
fixme:midi:OSS_MidiInit Synthesizer support MIDI in. Not supported yet (please
report)
err:winecfg:apply_drive_changes unable to define devicename of 'C:', targetpath
of '/home/hsyl20/.wine/drive_c'
I used mkdir to make the "dosdevices" directory in ~/.wine/ and now it works
better (i can add drives).
I made the "drive_c", "windows" and "system32" directories and the 3 warnings
disappeared.
Now i have a new error :
err:font:ReadFontDir Can't open directory
"/home/hsyl20/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/Fonts"
I guess i will have to make the link to /usr/share/fonts/wine.
Thanks for solving the problem

But that doesn't seem to be the problem here. It appears that wine is choosing

In my system I had no problems, but now, even deleting .wine (and letting wine
to create one) I have this problem.

Every 64k demo found on the scene.org site is compressed using PE compressor but
most of them at least start (though not always work - it's another story) - and
this one doesn't.
Besides other windows apps executables can be compressed the same way - so it's
a major bug.

Summary: msvcrt:Google Earth crashes without native msvcrt
(regression)
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
URL: http://kh.google.com/download/earth/index.html
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Keywords: regression, download
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: xerox_xerox2000(a)yahoo.co.uk
Steps to reproduce:
1. Follow the howto on http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=3254 to get
Google Earth installed properly (and usable).
2. Run it by
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="usp10=n" wine "c:\Program Files\Google\Google
Earth\GoogleEarth.exe"
3. Now type "New York" in the "Fly to" field and hit enter. That works.
4. Now type "Tokio,Japan" in the "Fly to " field and hit enter. Google Earth now
pops up a message box saying it encoutered a problem, and the program closes.
This seems to be a regression as i remember it to work in wine-0.9.5. It seems
to be some kind of problem with exception handling in msvcrt. It works fine with
native msvcrt. I did a +relay,+seh log (700Mb!), but i'll only attach the things
that seemed important to me.
