I had this type of problem when installing from source via the ./configure &&
make depend && make.
If I did ./tools/wineinstall it seems to set/run ldconfig
Solution described somewhere (from memory) is you have to run ldconfig as root
before runing wineprefixcreate. Once run you should not have a problem with
repeated install uninstalls.
I will be checking shortly as when looking at a font problem I got stuck with X
broken missing a system font and the fastest way to fix was to reinstall root
partition.This was with Mandriva 2006.0

I looked at your wine 0.9.8 log and I did spot one thing that is wrong. It is
looking for SIntf32.dll, which means you are running as Win9x. Please switch
to Windows 2000 and then report back if it is still not working.

The patch mentioned by Vitaly supposedly fixed corruption of a BootSector (of a
FAT partition), but Hogne talks about MBR here.
Hogne, can you find out whether it was some version of Wine, which will not
corrupt MBR?
If so, it would be nice to make a regression test.

Changed URL to show that this bug has nothing to do with the free trial
download. Thats another bug I will post when I get the time (huge debug output).
This bug is from a copy of a pre-install, pre-patched version from a windows
partition.
For more information: Shadowbane.exe is the patcher, and sb.exe is the game client.
Also I just did a quick test with WINEDLLOVERRIDES='msvcrt=n' wine
Shadowbane.exe and the patcher works fine (no new patches from wolfpack yet, but
seems to check everything fine), and after the patch check, I hit the Play
button, the client(sb.exe) loads fine, no error as stated above. To repeat -
wine Shadowbane.exe works as well, but the client crashes(sb.exe) with the
output I stated above.
Maybe the "keywords" should be changed to something else since the download
itself doesnt work, and is another bug all together? The only way to test the
game itself is to install it on Windows XP, and copy all the files over to the
linux partition.
Also, you dont have to have an account to check and see if its working, the
login screen itself is a 3d client render.

Tahmoa is licenced with Internet Explorer, which requires you to have a valid
windows license. Since that kinda makes it dependent on windows, I would suggest
for wine to make a default remapping availible.
One very good, open source font that is similar is the Bitstream Vera Sans font.
Also, the default behaviour should NOT be to just ignore the missing font and
not draw it - there should be a default font thrown in, and the console should
ouput something about missing fonts.

Summary: Diablo 2, v1.11 corrupts MBR
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.7.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: haskjold(a)gmail.com
When playing Diablo 2, v1.11 in Wine it corrupts my MBR, so I have to rewrite it
to allow my machine to boot again. At least one other person visiting #winehq
experienced the very same problem. I suspect it might be related to some copy
protection mechanism. I did not experience this problem with Diablo 2,v.1.10.
I'm not using any no-cd crack or any other third party stuff. The game is
installed from original CD's.
It should be noted that I ran wine as a normal user (not root), but because of a
misconfiguration the user had access to write to /dev/hda. Non the less it seems
like a bug.

I can't do it really fast, because i must rerun ./configure, and make depend
and make
i skipped make depend after the test of wine 10.02.2006 and all the next
regression tests worked, i tested 13.02.2006; 14.02.2006; 15.02.2006;
16.02.2006
and all worked, i then updated to latest cvs (27.02.2006)and made the "make
depend" because when i tried to run wine it said version mismatch between
wineserver and wine, so i had to do "make depend" and the (latest) build
resulted in me unable to run YPOPs (again).
I guess i have to redo the regression tests with "make depend && make" (uh,
this is going to take so much time...)
And i do run it from source.

(Wasn't sure which component to put it under, but I figure that can be changed
after by someone higher up who figures out where it should go.)
I have five workspaces in gnome desktop and sometimes like to flip through them,
even if I'm running Ragnarok Online, just to talk to someone or something on
Gaim. Sometimes though, I'll be going to switch desktops and it freezes before
it switches.
Everything locks up, nothing really happened prior to the freeze that is
extremely apparent it and it's not really that frequent.. I try to switch to a
text terminal or kill X and both don't do anything. So I usually reboot..
Not sure how I could get a debug thingy or anything, but I'm very willing to
help out if you tell me what to do. :)
Thank you very much!

I forgot to mention, certain objects (buildings, trees) in the game are black. I
suppose this is due to the missing lighting feature.

yes, in cvs, but i doubt that would make any difference. Are you sure you
removed your old wine installation, as i can imagine that your wine rpm is
installed in /usr whereas it might get installed in /usr/local if you compile
the stuff yourself (just a guess). You could best try to run wine from the
source tree you compiled your self (e.g. wine /usr/src/wine/wine app.exe)
Anyway, removing the line makes the app start fine here, but is of course not a
real fix. I wonder if the problem is in the assignment of two different types ;
i see
const void* srcbits
const DWORD* srcpixel;
and then
srcpixel=srcbits;
Is that valid?

Thanks for confirming this.
I tried your fix on 0.9.8 Debian packages (I removed the line and compiled them
again). I am stil getting the same error. Are you testing this on CVS branch?

I reopen the bug because with WINE 20060224 and 20060225, InstallShield still
stops in the same place. I am not sure what's different between our systems.
FWIW, I use nrpms.net repositories which provide GNOME 2.12 among other things.

Then you should get RPCRT4.DLL via installation of DCOM98 [*]. It will put a
bunch of OLE/COM-related DLLs into systemdir and will register them.

Confirming the bug + attached output with debug info. Something is wrong in
the conversion of the dibs in convert_888_to_0888_asis in
dlls/x11drv/dib_convert.c, but i cannot find out what exactly is wrong. When
you remove line 829 :
srcpixel=srcbits;
the application starts up just fine.

I meant to say did you put dnsapi.dll into Wine's system32 directory. That seems
to be the only reason why it could not find already implemented dlls. If it
still does not work, try uploading a full trace log of the program.

This sounds like a problem with your config and not with wine. You should
probably ask for help on a support forum or mailing list.
This bug should be marked as INVALID.

You can do that really fast. Just skip the "make install" and run wine directly
from the source tree. That way you will not need to recompile whole Wine each
time (just parts that really changed).

I reinstalled wine 0.9.7 (tarball) and ypops works again, so it's nothing
wrong with my system.
I then proceeded to make regression tests:
(with: cvs update -PAd -D "2006-02-10 CDT")
wine from 10.02.2006: works
so the problem is between wine 10.02.2006 and 15.02.2006
It takes a lot of time (1 to 1.5 hours) to do the regression test, i'll do
some more when i have the time.

"WINEDLLOVERRIDES='msvcrt=n' wine" because I got the same msvcrt.dll error:
wine: Call from 0x40470ac4 to unimplemented function msvcrt.dll._wsetlocal, aborting
Also the framerate is horrable compaired to the windows side (shadowbane is an
open gl game) but I fear that may have something to do with my linux install.

I think this is a regression and the in progress changes to font handing.
Winefile now seems to use A.D Mono font for the menu and file browsers. Changing
the font changes the font of the file browser but the menu item don't get
affected. Using save on exit does not save the new font.
Wine configure has a good looking font. Using Mandriva 2006.0 and imported font
from a win95 install's window/font in to Linux. No fonts in Drive_c window/system.

It actually could be repaired too. What happened.
CDrom with installation contans a folder: /mnt/cdrom/install/Program Files/...
but installation process is accesing /mnt/cdrom/install/PROGRA~1/... wine in my
version is unable to understand, and installation fails. The solution is to make
symbolic link with PROGRA~1 name...

a couple of days ago and today).
After the demo is installed it will not run without a windows MSVCIRT.dll and
even then it complains that the trial period has expired but those are other bugs

I tried the game again in the last few weeks on 0.9.8. The problem isn't as bad
as it used to be, even in 0.9.7. Animations in the menu after the load screen
were very choppy, and so was cursor movement. I think something must have
changed on my system because the problem was very obvious.
The current situation is the following. When loading the game for the first time
after a boot, I still have choppy animations for 2 or 3 secs. After that they
play smoothly. Cursor movement is still slow however. The cursor moves slower in
game than it is in the battle net interface or my desktop. For that reason I
think the gameplay still is more responsive on Windows.
The game is very playable after all. However fixing the cursor speed would make
me completely forget I'm not on Windows while I'm in game.
Other details about my config:
- Running the game in a separate 640x480 display. Same result in 8bpp and 16bpp.
- kernel 2.6.15-1.1831_FC4
- nVidia 1.0-8174
- GeForce2 MX
- Celeron 1.4GHz
- 512 MB RAM

I have istalled a clean wine-0.9.8 on SUSE10.0.
Installation went well, except for a message: MDAC >= 2.6 neaded.

Confirming bug with Max Payne 1 for wine-0.9.7/8
As a side note, these blending effects seem to work in Cedega, so there probably
is some code showing how to implement them. I just haven't the slightest idea
where to look in the source.

Mapsource crashes hard whenever serial communications are attempted. If
setupapi.dll is copied into system32 and winecfg is used to set it to "native",
Mapsource is then able to handle the crash and shut down gracefully (as opposed
to wine segfaulting). This serial communications bug is the only thing keeping
Mapsource from gold status.

Should I do regression testing to find out, what changed in WINE 0.9.8?
How could we override the need for native comdlg32 or NT40 version? (ISS no
longer officially suports NT40)

Ok, I got the Shadowbane.exe file to run, and check files for patching (thats
the shadowbane patcher). Had to copy over MFC42.dll file from my windows
directory to get it to work. When I hit the Play button after patching, it
tries to launch sb.exe and I get this error:
wine: Call from 0x7fc37ac4 to unimplemented function msvcrt.dll._wsetlocale,
aborting
Seems the msvcrt.dll._wsetlocale part of it repeats in a few other apps, not
sure how to resolve this.

Copied from my windows partition to /root/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 the
msvcrt.dll and MSVCP60.dll files to get to this stopping point (at first I got a
MSVCP60.dll error, afte putting that in, I got an error with msvcrt.dll, after
copying that second file, I got the same file error with diffrent description).
Here is the error exactly:
wine: Call from 0x40470ac4 to unimplemented function msvcrt.dll._wsetlocal, aborting
Also, the good ole sb.exe window (which used to happen alot in windows) poped up
from the app itself:
sb.exe has encountered an error and cannot continue! (code=<unknown exception>
addr=40470AC4)
This may be either a user error of mine, or, as the error says, something not
implemented into wine yet.

Actually, Jacek Caban in comment #6 was asking if reverting the patch on a
current version would fix the issue first and if it did not to submit a trace.
I take it you are useing a packaged version of wine and not compiling from source.
If you compile from source you can reverse teh patch by downloading the patch to
the root wine directory and issuing the patch command in wine root directory
patch -p0 -R < name of patch.
After that you can recompile wine.

0.9.2 sources to get Luxology Modo to work somewhat properly.
I managed to get the interface and opengl to draw at the same time by simply
disabling the double buffering. This ends up to be pretty cheap solution. The
only problem is positioning the opengl viewports because I don't have the
insight in the x11drv yet to implement:
- Reposition the viewport on every call to glViewport().
- Call glScissor to clip the viewport so it won't overdraw the interface.
- Adapt glClear to stay inside the scissored area.
And you should be done, giving a cheap and easy fix of the problem on
cards/drivers without a funky gl extension ;)
The second (and sane) solution is to use separate X child windows for each
openGL viewport. This can be done when the device context is attached, then you
can make an special exception for child windows with openGL attached. Most
programs use separate X (child) windows to position the openGL viewport because
it's so easy to do. The contents of these openGL subwindows is never draw by
GDI. X applications use the the same solution. But you probably now this ;)
Trying to blit a openGL viewport inside a window means reimplementing part of
the X window system and all driver specific trouble with it making the
implementation unreliable. The first implementation of the WM was very sweet for
this situation and lets X windows handle the complexity of clipping the viewport
and double buffering it.
I'd really like to have the first solution implemented as a switch as a
temporary solution even if it isn't double buffered. This would at least give us
somewhat usable applications.
Thanks.

Hi.
I got simmilar error - on current(yesterdays) Fedora Core 4 Athlon rpm version
of wine.
I don't have an exact error message here but it was about files whose can not
be coppied.
I was thinking about it - and i think there is trouble about permissions for
directories when installing from CD ...
All directories which appeared in "C:" installation path kept their permitions
as they are on CD - CD is read only ..
Hopefully helps.

| And apparently the toolhelp.dll.ClassFirst is not yet implemented on WINE:
Though I think it should be implemented already:
$ ll dlls/toolhelp*
| -rw-rw-r-- 1 s2 s2 13 Feb 22 12:50 dlls/toolhelp.dll16
| lrwxrwxrwx 1 s2 s2 15 Feb 13 00:42 dlls/toolhelp.dll.so -> kernel32.dll.so
$ cat dlls/toolhelp.dll16
| kernel32.dll
Looks like another reference to the same builtin module "kernel32.dll".
$ cat dlls/kernel32.dll.so | strings | grep ClassFirst
| ClassFirst
| __wine_stub_ClassFirst
Stub?
$ grep -r ClassFirst dlls/kernel
| dlls/kernel/toolhelp.h:BOOL16 WINAPI ClassFirst16( CLASSENTRY *pClassEntry );
| dlls/kernel/toolhelp.spec:#69 pascal -ret16 ClassFirst(ptr) ClassFirst16
| dlls/kernel/toolhelp.spec:69 stub ClassFirst
| Binary file dlls/kernel/kernel32.dll.so matches
| Binary file dlls/kernel/toolhelp.spec.o matches
Stub, but lets go further:
$ grep -r ClassFirst dlls/*/*.c
| dlls/user/class.c: * ClassFirst (TOOLHELP.69)
| dlls/user/class.c:BOOL16 WINAPI ClassFirst16( CLASSENTRY *pClassEntry )
So, it's implemented, only in another module, in "user32.dll". I don't know
whether it can be forwarded at imports level. Probably it cannot. Kernel32
must not depend on User32, I guess.
Then it perhaps can be imported during run-time linking via GetProcAddres().
Or maybe the situation will change in nearest future as I saw AJ doing some
module-load-rewrite recently. :)

The crash looks like it is because the app has specified a resource ID in the
lpszText field of TOOLINFO when adding the tooltip.
Now when getting the tooltip (which is where is crash is happening) we have to
determine whether the correct behaviour is to return the resource ID in the
lpszText field (i.e. just bypass the call to WideCharToMultiByte) or to return
the loaded text.

WineDbg terminated on pid 0x8
And I found that this function is only on Windows3.1 and partly on Windows95:
As part of the move toward each application knowing only about itself,
USER has changed the way it maintains the list of window classes. In
Windows 3.1, all window classes were stored in a linked list. You could
walk through the list and obtain the class names and owning module with
the TOOLHELP ClassFirst and ClassNext functions. In Windows 95,
ClassFirst and ClassNext still work, but they return information only about
the standard system classes (such as buttons) that USER registers at startup
ime. Classes that are registered by applications are kept in a private list. At
least part of the information for each of these private classes is kept in
USER's 16-bit DGROUP, but again, TOOLHELP. DLL knows nothing of
hem. Chapter 4 covers the changes to window classes in Windows 95.
And apparently the toolhelp.dll.ClassFirst is not yet implemented on WINE:
http://source.winehq.org/WineAPI/toolhelp.html
Is there any other way to get a working toolhelp.dll.ClassFirst???
Cheers!

Hi arthur, i can confirm the bug, it pops up right here as well. However, a little
googling showed it is probably related to the fact that the trial expires
version after 30 days. Are you able to test the thing a a windowsinstallation?
Maybe the thing you (and me) have downloaded shows the same behaviour on windows.
