Please check with native msvcrt.dll. Looks like a dup of Bug 4128. Even Delphi
does not use msvcrt, Firebird might.

If it still crashes, then lease run it with "WINEDEBUG=+seh,+relay wine slay &>

Then run 'grep -A 20 -B 300 "seh:" /tmp/relay.log > /tmp/relay_1.txt' and attach

Both the old and the new test case display the color
picker fine on WinME, but wine only works with the
new test case. So wine needs to be able to handle
a null lpCustColors field, at least from a vb app.
Hrm. I guess the thing to do is somehow spy on
what the native oleaut32 is doing when it gets
that null pointer...

I did a lot of things.
First I found out that my sound (in-kernel ALSA of kernel 2.6.13) was not
working with wine. So I tried different things like OSS, newest ALSA-package,
newer kernel etc.
My sound is still bad, but works (stuttering very bad) and HL2 starts now as
suspected.
So I guess this was just a sound issue. Maybe related to switching from gcc-3.3
to gcc-3.4 which caused a lot of problems on my system.
I don't know how I should mark this bug. Would "INVALID" be okay?

DirectDraw games with similar requirements, such as Heroes of Might and Magic I

The best thing to do first is try with 0.9.4 and see if that makes any changes
and then update to the latest CVS. You can run wine from the compile tree
without installation. see http://winehq.org/site/cvs ,
http://wiki.winehq.org/FrontPage and http://winehq.org/site/developer-cheatsheet .
This sounds similar to one thing I have found to be a problem in 16 bit code. If
one program spawns a second and the first exits a dead lock occurs and then 60
seconds later the second program is killed by wine.

"Working" fonts
By the way, I worked out exactly what garbling is happening - the font symbols
are being rendered backwards (flipped horizontally), and its using the index
one above the one it should (ie, "sqweek" shows up as "trxffl").
The fonts I've attached here are a temp fix. I used fontforge to manually flip
the characters and shift them one index. It messes up the text on the menus but
at least once you get in game the text is readable (it's not pretty, but it's
readable :) ).
I just grabbed the latest cvs code (20051227) and the problem is still present.
However, there is something else at work here - I have a saved wine source tree
which worked great for soldat back in my Debian system. But, that same tree
compiled now under SourceMage has this font issue. Probably some font config
issue is involved... unfortunately I've reinstalled over Debian so can't
investigate it.

Works fine for me here with wine-0.9.4,
but the original problem case,
http://www.jsware.net/jsware/packs/webed5.exe
still doesn't work; it fails with
err:module:import_dll Library MSVBVM60.DLL (which is needed by
L"C:\\windows\\w51sup.exe") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for
L"C:\\windows\\w51sup.exe" failed, status c0000135
So perhaps there's a problem in webed5.exe's installer
that isn't present in the test case?
Joe, did you test your little demo installer on Linux with Wine?
If so, what version?

Summary: deadlock in GlobalUnlock

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P2
Component: wine-kernel
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: arieldembling(a)gmail.com
Hello,
I'm running a program under Wine which opens a modal window, but under certain conditions it freezes after closing that window and returning focus to the previous one. The backtrace indicates this could be a Wine problem (I guess it's a deadlock or starvation of some kind, but my knowledge of Wine isn't deep enough to diagnose this). The fact that this program has been running fine for years under native Windows systems suggests Wine should be the cause too.
The program I'm running is prowin32.exe, which is the Progress client environment, running a Progress application called MFG/pro made by a company called QAD (see www.qad.com). You won't be able to find a demo of this program on the internet, but I'm willing to do any tests that you need.
This MFG/pro application consists of lots of files (modules) which are executed by Progress' prowin32.exe and which call each other as the need arises. At the moment that the problem appears, prowin32.exe has just finished executing one of those modules, and is returning the control to the caller module. Also, it is destroying one window (which was modal, and used for data input) and SHOULD give focus back to another existing window, but this does not happen. Instead, it just hangs there.
This problem is somewhat hard to reproduce, because the test case is not that common. There could be some dependency on the amount of data that's entered on the modal window (or maybe on the data itself), but maybe it's something else. Once a test case is found, it's reproducible almost every time. I say "almost" because at least with an older version of Wine the problem disappeared if the wine-preloader process was being strace'd (I thought it was some race condition), but that doesn't seem to happen anymore with version 0.9.2. So now we do have a 100% reproducible bug (the race condition might still be present, but if so the now it's easily won).
I tested this with several Wine & Linux versions, and it's present in all of them. The latest Wine version I've tested is 0.9.2 (I used the CentOS binaries provided at winehq.com), running under Linux 2.6.14.4, but was present back in Wine 20040813 and with Linux 2.6.3. I didn't test Wine 0.9.3 because the pre-compiled binaries for CentOS still don't exist, but I've seen the changelog and couldn't find anything that seemed to be related to this bug.
This is the backtrace before triggering the problem (with the modal window open and a message box waiting for input):

This bug is critical for me, since the program is useless if it cannot be trusted to save the information that was input through the window that fails to be destroyed
I'm not sure if this bug should be marked for Component wine-kernel, but that's my best guess.
I sorely need your help. Any thoughts/questions/tests/solutions are welcome.
Thanks!!

The problem reported has to do with a bug in our msvcrt missing support for I64,
and that does have its own bug 2075. If 2075 gets fixed, then this is fixed. I
have gotten a patch merged in for it finally, so please test.
If wine is supposed to load dlls provided by the program overriding the built-in
ones, this is another bug. Either way, simcity should work fine now here.

In fact the fix is completely wrong :-)
I need to test how windows searches menus by ID. Simple tests seem to show it
does actually return submenus if searched for by id, but it returns menuitems
in preference. I need to write a testcase to see the exact search algorithum
so we can mimic it.

Reopening because I've found a problem with the patch. Bug 3420 reappears when
this change goes in, and thats because it uses GetMenuItemInfo for a popup
menu handle. I need to work out when we should skip popups and when we
shouldnt, and holding the bug open because I cant send patch until this is done

This is similar ro bug 4004, and in fact is resolved by the same patch
(currently the cvs worthy version of the patch is under discussion in wine-
devel, but the sample patch I attached does indeed solve the problem)

Hi, Dan i didn't configure anything. i have some more old versions laying around
here: in wine-20050211 i get the same error you are describing; in wine-20041019
it starts up fine. So i'd say test november and december 2004 snapshots.

OK, I'm doing a little regression testing with the
monthly source snapshots.
The app fails on a clean wine-20050111 install
(i.e. if I blow away ~/.wine first) after complaining
fixme:seh:EXC_RtlRaiseException call (from 0x6aa2b1) to unimplemented function
user32.dll.GetScrollBarInfo
When you had it working, did you test with a totally clean 20040914,
or did you configure it somehow?

Sorry I didn't take the time it really takes to do a serious bug report...
the thing is as follows: If you copy/paste text directly from other windows
application (such as the key generator I used) the installer is immediately
killed, but if you paste this text into a file and then copy the text in the
file to the clipboard and paste it to the installer it works fine.
I considered it to be a blocker for this app since it is really hard to make it
work from a real windows installation so the installer is very important and it
didn't work, thought it was really serious, now I see it is not, should have
moved it to normal

(you either use all native or all builtin ole (ole32,oleaut32,rpcrt4).
Also is there a reason that you using native shlwapi?
Also please try this with latest wine-0.9.4 (but see Bug 4128 for some addional
info).

just check to what, your wine drives are mapped to.

Summary: Regression: Wine Spins When Starting InstallShield
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-ole
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: selover(a)speakeasy.net
Prior to 0.9.4 it was possible to start the installation of the Garmin Trip and
Waypoint Manager. Wine now spins before the installation starts.
I have isolated the cause of the problem. It is due to the change in
dlls/ole32/storage32.c file, specifically the SmallBlockChainStream_ReadAt()
function. The spin occurs in the first do/while loop in the function
SmallBlocksToBigBlocks().
SmallBlockChainStream_ReadAt() function previously checked if the bytes read
equal the requested bytes. The function was modified not to perform this check.
Without the check the do loop in SmallBlocksToBigBlocks() never exits.
I corrected the problem by adding:
if (size == 0)
rc = E_FAIL;
before the ending return in SmallBlockChainStream_ReadAt() function.

I haven't been playing the game in a while, but having tried to get back to it
in recent days, I have likewise encountered this bug again - although it
definitely had stopped appearing for me after the commit of the previously
posted patch. Weirdly, even reverting CVS to immediately after the commit which
fixed it before ('cvs update -dPA -D "2005-05-08 00:00 CDT"') still gives the
failure... I'd be more than willing to track down the exact commit which caused
the problem, if I could manage to get back to a version which didn't *have* the
problem. Even the version I originally reported as "working", last time around,
now fails for me.
I am at present still running XFree86 (4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1), but have upgraded
to X.org (6.8.2.dfsg.1-11) although I haven't restarted X yet. Any information I
can provide which would be helpful in tracking down this problem may be had upon
request - for that matter, any advice as to how best to track the problem down
myself would be welcome.

This is all belongs in the manual. There were numerous discussions about this on
wine-devel. Wine is not Windows and we do not do things in windows ways. It's ap
to packagers to create any link on the desktop or menu.
And Wine should not associate itself with *.exe files - again up to packagers.

Regressing back to 0.9.2 (Only prebuilt available for Redhat FC4 as of now)
More investigation shows that the dll overide for "msxml3.dll" ONLY
works while wine is set to windows version: Win98.
This is all I can do at the moment.
I can't get GIT working. And CVS seems to be non functional atm.
Anyway,
With version 0.9.2 and "msxml3.dll" set to native AND wine in Win98 mode - It
does seem to working (Without debug shell).

wine --help or --version should not install ~/.wine
I dont need or want a default wine config just to check the version number or to
get a one line help message.
This is a real case, I just installed wine as part of a system update and wanted
to check which version was installed now. Obviously I was still root and was not
intending to run wine . I had to cntl_C and clean up /root/.wine
So if running wine as root is going to be trapped it should probably be done
late. Version or help switches should be treated first.

I have had problems since wine went to the .9.x series with MSMONEY. It is not

This seems related to another bug I saw, 3950. Basically, MSMONEY does not have
a sound.dll but uses the builtin one. It is is not able to properly load the
sound.drv module. I have completely rebuilt my wine configs testing all
different versions from windows 3.1 up to windows XP. I have even tried
creating a symlink for sound.dll but that did not work. I was hoping to have
seen this fixed with the more recent releases of wine, but I'm guessing that
this issue is not on the radar yet.
Thanks!

Bug 4147) and I really can confirm random freezes for 10-30 seconds every
minute or so. After that time, CS unfreezes.
The freezes occur regardless of the sound driver. It should be really because
of that steam update because Nosteam CS and 1.5 work fine.

What version of libc is your wine compiled against? Also do you use a wine
desktop? Both glibc 2.3.6 or a wine desktop seem to cause hangs on exit.
Though if it's new with wine-0.9.4 and recent cvs versions then it's wine not
glibc. I'll do some testing.

Confirming and assigning the odd menu item. Cause is that a menu items id
value is equal to a hmenu of a popup, and the modify incorrectly picks one up
in preference to the other. I think the problem is we automatically give an
item the id of the hmenu for a popup, and I dont think windows does - Trying
to test this on windows.
Note as to why the popup remains visible might be a secondary bug - if it
persists after the first issue is fixed you may need a new bug report, lets
wait and see

Yes, that's the type of info we need. Unfortunately the program catches the
crash rather than wine so the info is useless. I never tried this so I don't
know if it will work but can you try running the program in the wine debugger to
see if it catches the exception first. Use winedbg rather than wine to run your

msvcrt regression, but I'm not sure (I didn't test without the patch)
The patch which may have broken it, is this one:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-cvs/2005-December/019940.html
This was the last msvcrt patch committed, but I didn't test without it yet
(that's why I'm not sure if it's msvcrt)

Suggestions to make wine work for users who are not linux developers.
Starting from the point where the wine package has been installed. What would a
typical user do and what will happen. Remembering we're catering for windows
user mentality here not seasoned linux system maintainers.
At this stage you can be damn sure he/she has not found man wine ; man winecfg;
or winehq.com. He naively thinks he has installed a software package and it will
do something if he runs it, so let's see what happens.
1a. He will look for it on the "start" menu
1b. He will try to run wine from console.
1a. next idea please...
Consider 1b in detail.
First thing wine does it create a default setup if one is not found.
There's a fair chance he had to be root to install it and he still is root.
This is a big no-no but he does not know that yet. Wine does, but carries on
regardless installing /root/.wine and does not even warn the user this is a BAD
idea.
Suggested fix: trap the error and warn. Possibly add --root switch just in case
someone had a real need to do this for some unseen reason. The error should be a
dlg as well as console output.
Maybe now he wants some help:
prof@linbox ~ $ wine -?
wine: cannot open (null)
WHAT?? OK, try again:
prof@linbox ~ $ wine -h
wine: cannot find '-h'
DUHH! forget it just try running wine:
prof@linbox ~ $ wine
Wine 0.9.1
Usage: wine PROGRAM [ARGUMENTS...] Run the specified program
wine --help Display this help and exit
wine --version Output version information and exit
prof@linbox ~ $
So that's it ?! My cry for help gets me "wine PROGRAM [ARGUMENTS...]" what are
arguements? What do I do ??
Critism: this is near useless. it's technical ; version I already got , so what;
"display this page" by this stage is likely to be taken as a bad joke if the guy
is still in a good mood.
Suggestions : -h should equal --help ; so should -? ;don't assume everyone is
used to reading UNIX documentation. One more line with an eg. would speak a
thousand words.
eg wine explorer , wine notepad , wine notepad.exe , wine "c:/Program Files/
installed software/windows-program-name.exe"
ABOVE ALL; he called for help and you've got his attention. HERE is where you
put hooks to more info so he does not have to start using google to find what
doc there is. Refer the user to man wine , man winecfg , www...wine-beginners-
guide.html
So at the first hurdle we fall flat, face-down in the mud.
All our new user gets is "wine PROGRAM". Over and out.
If he did not know before he wont be any wiser.
I'll cut this off here since that much is self-contained , trivial to put in
place and at least a big step forward.
best regards.

"The Journal" is a note-taking app written in Delphi.
A fellow wrote it eight or so years ago, was
suprised other people liked it, and has
been enhancing and selling it for $40 or so ever since.
It has four major modes, each with its own tab, and it displays the name
of the current mode just under the toolbar, on the right side of the window.
Under Wine, the area behind this text is not cleared properly,
so flipping between modes leaves behind old text in that space,
which looks pretty crappy and makes the text illegible.

Summary: Emu48 with HP49 ROM
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: kdntl(a)yahoo.fr
Emu48 is a free software (GPL) that can emulate various HP calculators, such as
HP48 and HP49. Source code of emu48 can be downloaded on the maintainer's web site:
<http://privat.swol.de/ChristophGiesselink/Emu48/e48sp40.zip>
While emulating a HP49 calc, using the HP49 ROM, the screen keeps beeing black,
even if you turn on or reset the emulated calc. This problem has been present
for a while, whatever emu48 version or wine version used (I am using a 32bits
x86 system).
The screen isn't all black with a HP48 ROM, but it is yellow/white instead of
being black/white. One could sometimes get red or blue colors.
To reproduce the bug, please follow these steps (on a 32-bits x86 arch?):
1) Download the package
<http://perso.wanadoo.fr/kdntl/misc/winebug_emu48.tar.gz> (~800KB) and untar it.
This creates the winebug_emu48 directory with some files in it that I've
gathered in order to ease the manipulation.
2) Create a fresh wine installation.
3) Go into the winebug_emu48/ directory.
4) Run "wine emu48.exe" in a shell. A dialog box is then displayed.
5) In the "Emu48 Directory" text zone, append "\hp49\" to the text already
there, to get something like "H:\winebug_emu48\hp49\".
Then, click on the down arrow button.
6) Click OK to start the emulation.
7) Click OK to close the report dialog box.
8) Look at the black screen. Click on the calc's ON button. The screen should
still be black instead of displaying something.
I don't know much about the win32 so I didn't manage to patch the original emu48
version. However, there is likely a problem with wine in the display.c file, or
something like that. For example, there is a macro in display.c which is:
#define GRAYMASK(c) (((((c)-1)>>1)<<24) \^M
|((((c)-1)>>1)<<16) \
|((((c)-1)>>1)<<8) \
|((((c)-1)>>1)))
Maybe this is not really portable? The maintainer claims that there is no win32
unsupported calls used in emu48.
Thank you in advance for having read my bug report.

OK, sorry about the many posts here. I went back
and ran webed on Windows, and figured out how to
reproduce the original problem:
1. run webed
2. pick 'color picker' from menu
3. put in any six digit hex code, press 'show this color'
4. edit the RGB fields in the far right of the box;
as you type, the color should change dynamically.
This does not happen in wine.
I think I know why, too:
if you run with WINEDEBUG=+commdlg, you see lines like
trace:commdlg:CC_WMCommand CC_WMCommand wParam=20002c4 lParam=102de
but if you look at dlls/commdlg/colordlg.c, it's not
expecting the high word of wParam to be set.
There was one other bug: lpp->updating was wrongly set to 1 in
one function. I'm attaching a patch against wine-0.9.4 that
fixes the problems here.

Summary: Regression in Wine (x11drv/dib.c) on FreeBSD

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal

There has been a regression in Wine on FreeBSD that prevents at least one
application (DVD Shrink 3.2, rated Gold) from starting up. This effects all
versions of Wine built on or after 04-20-2005 (including the recent Beta releases).
Through trial and error, I've located when and where the regression was
introduced. The changes made to x11drv/dib.c (and associated patches, but this
file specifically) on 04-20-2005 effectively prevent DVD Shrink from starting up
on FreeBSD. Copying a dib.c from a previous version of Wine just prior to the
code change eliminates the problem, and DVD Shrink fires right back up again.
I don't understand the nature of the problem, but am willing to test patches.

It would be great if you could isolate the patch that caused the regression.
There's documentation on the website about how to do that. You could also use
git-bisect on the wine.git repository.

Yes this does require a kernel mod. and so is out of the control on Wine.
This is as it should be , making exe executable under linux is the best way to
open the door to virus , worms etc. To be avoided.
* a "Wine Menu" to replace the Start Menu
with desktop window managers falling over each other to be windows like this has
been well covered for those who like that sort of thing. Wine could expand it's

So I see the only difference in 'oleaut32.dll' being loaded as native or builtin:

If WINEDLLOVERRIDES='oleaut32=n' wine ... helps (it will require a real DLL
file, from DCOM95 for example), this probably means Wine has a bug in its OLE
automation susbsystem.
BTW, I see some interesting output in failing case:
| trace:loaddll:load_builtin_dll Loaded module L"...tem\\oleacc.dll" : builtin
| err:ole:TLB_ReadTypeLib Loading of typelib L"oleacc.dll" failed with error 1812
| fixme:cursor:CURSORICON_SimulateLoadingFromResourceW broken file

| fixme:cursor:CURSORICON_SimulateLoadingFromResourceW broken file
L"d:\\06bt000b.tmp"
| trace:loaddll:load_builtin_dll Loaded module L"...tem\\msvcrt.dll" : builtin
So if the line 'TLB_ReadTypeLib Loading of typelib L"oleacc.dll" failed with
error 1812' doesn't lie, the developers can try finding the reason for this.
Maybe ask about this on wine-devel.

Oops, I just realized that I'd reported this before (bug: 3721). The fix I
mentioned there still works, but the real solution should be incorporated into
the makefiles.
